I have been a patient of Dr. Baker's for nearly 13 years for mild Lupus and moderate UC. During that time I have been both quite ill and doing pretty well. She has always been available, sympathetic, professional and on top of it. One of the best aspects of her practice is her belief that there is more to care than just drugs. She is careful about the vitamin mix that I take, she pays attention to helping me to alleviate stressors in my life, she is aware of the latest nutritional information and an advocate for me to exercise at whatever level I can. As a lupus patient my symptoms range from extreme fatigue to arthritis to being really sick. i find the fatigue really debilitating even though it is not life threatening. A friend of the family who is a well-regarded LA doctor referred me to Dr. Baker in early 2011. Dr. Baker spent about an hour with me on my first appointment. She struck me as extremely bright with a quick mind and a compassionate "bedside manner." She was patient and was a good listener beyond most doctors. After a second appointment, a couple of years went by as my autoimmune disease calmed down due to my changing my diet. In late 2013, a new autoimmune disease cropped up and this time Dr. Baker introduced me to a few other specialists who could help with the diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Baker has been worth her weight in gold simply for connecting me with these A-team specialists in the areas of hematology, dermatology, and lupus, one of whom is regarded as the No. 1 or No. 2 specialist in the country. Another of these specialists then was instrumental in connecting me with all the top people in his particular area (hematology) in the U.S. Perhaps the thing I remember best about Dr. Baker was just prior to her taking four weeks off for a maternity leave. She called me to see if everything was okay. I then told her that I'd be speaking to her in about a month after she returned from maternity leave. She replied, "Oh, no you're not. I intend to communicate with you two days after I give birth." Sure enough, a few days after giving birth, Dr. Baker contacted me to see how I was doing. I do not know of another doctor who would give this level of special care. I would recommend Dr. Baker to anyone seeking a rheumatologist. read more

I am not one to put reviews on yelp but.... Today I called to schedule a consultation with Dr Baker. I wanted to meet her, review my medical condition (I have lupus) and explore her thoughts on autoimmune to see if we agree philosophically on a blended approach to dealing with my autoimmune disease. I too was told quickly about the $350 administrative fee needed in advance of this appointment even though I have good medical insurance. I do not object to this new concierge fee that some doctors are instituting...I actually hope it allows for better service....but if it is an an "annual administrative fee" then I should be able to meet with the doctor and after our meeting decide if I would like to continue in her medical care and then pay the fee...at the end of our appointment when you sign on for care. You see I believe we should be able to choose or doctors. I stated this and thought it sounded logical but I was treated very abruptly by the staff...no understanding...no discussion just argumentative with attitude. I have to say I became a little frustrated but still tried to calmly make my point and see if there was a different way to approach this...stating that I clearly pay these types of fees to other doctors...but instead of discussion the nurse actually hung up on me. In their defense the office manager was not in to speak with me but to hang up on me....a doctors office that supposedly won an award for compassion. I had hoped for a personalized individualized approach. Shouldn't this fee be attached to the second appointment when we are truly patients of the doctor. I had high hopes to meet a doctor that approached auto immune with an all encompassing vision but I guess it is all about the money! A very sad truth. Called today as a first time patient to try and make an appointment. I had some reservations to do so in light of some of the negative reviews, but figured that there were enough positive reviews where i would give this doctor a chance. Plus her office is very close to my work. I was shocked to hear that they charge an annual fee of $350 to cover administrative costs. Im sorry, but what is an administrative cost? Aren't you supposed to have office staff? Isn't all the money that you make from insurances and private cash payments enough? Is this another sneaky way to get extra money? What's next? You're going to charge an hourly fee? Since when do people become doctors just for the sole purpose of screwing people instead of helping people? This really upsets me as an individual and makes me have reservations about doctors in general. read more

WARNING!! This office is impossible to communicate with. They are rude and will hang up on you. It is their POLICY to not return emails and they will NOT give you a time to expect calls back about test results. I saw the doctor once. She did extensive testing that I didn't request. She didn't actually look into the reason I was even there. She took LOTS of blood and said to call in for the results on Friday. On Friday, I called her office and her incredibly rude staff strung me along ALL DAY. I asked for a time to expect the call and they refused to say. When she finally did call she didn't even have the lab results yet so the whole day was a waist. When she finally had the lab results she said everything was "great". THEN 5 days later, her office manager left a message saying the doctor needed to discuss my lab results. I emailed to avoid her staff, but no reply. A week later, still no reply so I called again and was treated poorly again. I tried to explain to her staff that if they could just use email or schedule calls it would alleviate the stress of playing phone tag and missing important calls. The office manager said that they won't do either of those things and THEY JUST HUNG UP. Then End. Now what? I have swollen lymph nodes and am dealing with serious immune system reactions and I have no idea if my blood results are "great" or not, no idea if/when I will get a call. If/when I am called, I will probably miss the call since I am a teacher and am in class all day. If I do miss a call I will have to call back and deal with her staff again. Guess what? I work the same hours as the doctor so I will always be busy when she calls unless a time is scheduled, then I will make myself available, but NO. Her office will just hang-up on you if you even try to make this point. NO THANK YOU. This is not the doctor for me. I think patients should be treated with more respect. My time is also important and DR. Baker's office clearly doesn't agree. Find another doctor. Don't support their rude treatment of patients. read more

STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS DOCTOR... Dr Susan Baker saw me 2x, she had me do extensive testing only to dismiss me as a patient - ON THE PHONE - WITHOUT GIVING ME MY TESTING RESULTS. Not only that, she gave me a shot of kenalog which 3 months later started leaving a golf ball sized indentation. When I called the office to ask what was going on, I was totally dismissed and hung up on. I attempted to email the office photos of the injury they caused, and again no response. Over the next 9 months the indentation continued to get worse, with tissue and muscle death - necrotic and now the hole is very deep and 3 1/2 inches in diameter... still keep trying to get answers from her office only to keep getting hung up on... I saw my surgeon because the hole is so deep that I can barely walk on my left leg... she had never seen anything like it and thinks that I will have to remove the entire portion of the buttocks to stop the ongoing dying tissue and muscle... AND GUESS WHAT... DR BAKER STILL CONTINUES TO HANG UP AND REFUSES TO TALK OR SEE ME OR THE DAMAGE... I would stay far far away if you are ill... I was treated horribly and it is only a matter of time before she hurts someone else with her negligence and lack of caring... do not expect her to stand up to the Hippocratic oath... She cares, she's there for you and seems to know just what it takes to make you feel and be better... what else do you need from a doctor. ? Went in for a follow up appointment and as we're about to begin, the fire alarm went off, Dr. Baker half-hazardly scribbled off a referral in the hallway and walked away. I was disappointing that she never followed up or tried to reschedule, would have been great to go over my blood work (which to this day I have not seen or received a copy of). She did have it together enough to send me a bill for the "visit". I informed the billing office of what happened and asked if they could remove the charge, they were difficult to communicate with, and I never heard back with a resolve. I moved shortly after that and have just now discovered that they sent the "debt" to collections for a service never rendered. So, big thanks to Susan Baker for wasting my time, not helping with my health issue, not caring enough to follow up, and for the mess I can't resolve (or even get an explanation for). The list of complaints is long and in today's world, the staff in many of these offices treats you more like a number than a human being. However, I must say that Dr. Baker and her staff are perhaps the most professional, concerned, kind staff one could ask for. The one star has nothing to do with her skills as a doctor and is more about how she chooses to run her practice. I do feel though that one is a reflection of the other. I would have LOVED to see Dr. Baker but she has a ridiculous policy that there is a $350 "annual administration fee" that the patient is responsible for paying even if they are covered by insurance. This fee is expected to be paid even if you only see her one time only. I'm sorry, is this a spa membership or a doctor's office? Something positive! I will say, her office was extremely pleasant and also very clear on communicating this cost right away and even scheduling an appointment was done with ease but I cannot justify this outlandish $350 fee. I have never had any other doctor have an "administration fee" so I was caught very off guard by the entire concept. I'm disappointed that I won't have a chance to find out how she is as a doctor but if this is how she runs her practice I think I am probably better off anyway. I let the doctor who referred me know that this is a fee that she is charging and they also seemed to find it equally ridiculous and kind of embarrassing for them as the referring office. Had the pleasure of seeing Susan Baker for the first time and I must say that I finally found someone who not only comes highly recommended but took the time to really listen to my complaints and had a wonderful bedside manner. I began seeing Dr. Baker 6 or so months ago when I moved to Los Angeles from the east coast. I initially dreaded finding a new rheumatologist but Dr. Baker has been wonderful. She is available when needed and if not she will actually call you on the phone to answer questions or check up on you. This type of personal care I don't see too often. She is very intelligent and seems to reference new studies and articles she keeps abreast of. I feel very confident in Dr. Baker's care and would recommend her to anyone in need of a rheumatologist. Dr. Baker gets my vote for greatest doctor on the planet. I was referred to her by the Cedars-Sinai Spine Center for systemic joint pain that I had been experiencing for a number of years. During my first appointment she was meticulous in her attention to even the most minor clinical details, and from this she was able to order up the necessary labs and imaging needed for a diagnosis. The course of treatment she prescribed has kept the problem under control. Bottom line, Dr. Baker figures stuff out, and she listens, and she does it all with smile. Plus she has a great office staff that has been attentive to my questions, scheduling, and the inevitable insurance paperwork that goes hand-in-hand with medicine today. I have recommended family members and friends to Dr. Baker and I would give her 10 stars on Yelp if I could. read more

As an administrator who runs physician offices, as well as having been a medical biller, medical collector, and claims specialist, I called Dr. Baker's office to make an appointment as she was a provider of my insurance Blue Cross/Blue Shield. I was promptly told by the receptionist that I would need to pay a $350 yearly 'administrative fee' even though she was a provider of my insurance plan. I told the receptionist that Dr. Baker was a provider of my insurance and was not allowed to balance bill me for anything that was not allowed by my insurace company. The receptionist stated that this $350 'administrative fee' would not be billed to my insurance company, but I would have to pay this fee prior to being seen by Dr. Baker. As this is a complete breach of contract with the insurance companies which Dr. Baker has contracted with, I promptly called my insurance company and told them what this doctor was trying to 'pull' on patients. The contracting department representative of my insurance company put me on hold while they called Dr. Baker's office to let them know this 'administrative fee', which was a so-called yearly fee and would not be billed to the insurance company (probaby because there isn't a CPT code for this 'fee'), should not be billed to their contracted customers. My insurance company, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, is not a small company, and they were shocked at what this doctor's office was telling patients and that they were actually collecting these monies from their customers. You can bill whatever you want if you are a doctor who did not enter into a contract with a patient's insurance company. But, if you are contracted with any patient's insurance company, you have to abide by their contracting rules and regulations. As someone who has over 25 years in the contracting arena, I can only surmise that Dr. Baker is hedging her bets that most of her patient's (and potential patients) will not know that they should not be balance billed for anything that has been denied by their insurance company, and that they SHOULD NOT be billed for ANYTHING that is not billed to their insurance company. A provider who is contracted with your insurance company can only bill you for co-pays that your insurance company has deemed reasonable and customary. As someone in the healthcare field, I am shocked and dismayed that a physician would actually sink so low as to shadily charge her patients which are insured by a healthcare insurance with which she is a provider of, a ridiculous and non-allowable 'administative fee'. Administrative costs are an employers responsiblity, not a patient's. Suffice it to say, I never booked with this 'doctor'. read more

My first ever complaint on yelp! My daughter was referred to Dr Baker. She got really sick on Thursday September 28th. The receptionist told me she had an availability on October 8th. I explained again that she was really sick, and on imunnosuppressant drugs and would need to see the Dr that day. She said we would need to go to urgent care that she was fully booked and could not see her. My daughter ended up in the ER for 4 days. Communication was so bad with Dr Baker and her office that she had no idea that her patient was hospitalized. FYI Dr Baker has seen our daughter once. She had to pay $350 administration fee for the year. I have asked for a refund after our above experience as she will not be going back to that practice. The refund was denied. I was shocked yesterday. Referred to Dr. Baker, I called for an appointment, buy before I was asked my name, or my illness, I was asked about my insurance. And then, after I told the Nurse that I had both a primary and secondary, I was told, again, in no uncertain terms, "Dr Baker requires a $350 dollar advance on top of whatever insurance pays", Still, nobody had asked me name or what my reason for contacting a rheumatologist was. I didn't really know, actually, It was just a reference from a well meaning neurologist. What has happened to medicine? Where is Hippocrates when he need him? I come from a distinguished medical family, and my father, who was Doctor to Norman Cousins, Pablo Casals, Indira Ghandi and countless citizens, police officers and firemen in New York, just turned over in his grave. Needless to say, I moved on. It wasn't the money. God knows we will pay for our health. It was the timing and the blatant, no holds approach. I'll make a deal, Doc. Let's go double or nothing. You fix me, I pay 700 without complaint. You tell me after that firat meeting there is nothing that you can find, that you can't fix the problem, you refund my $350. I still don't really know what a rheumatologist has to offer me. Couldn't we at least discuss it, along with your demand for the advance. read more

Went for my second visit to Dr. Baker and am happy to report she is just as nice, efficient and caring as she was on my first visit. My initial phone call was returned w/i hours and when I spoke to her, she didn't rush me or dismiss me. We discussed treatment options and just speaking with her was reassuring. Dr. Baker is kind, caring and compassionate and when she told me she treats her patients as she would herself well, that was the first time ANY Dr. has ever said that to me. I've recently moved to LA from the midwest and was in search of a primary care doctor and someone with experience treating autoimmune diseases. I came across Dr. Baker's website, and decided to schedule an appointment. From the moment I walked in her office, I felt good about my decision. For one, I was called in within 2 minutes of my appointment time -- which in and of itself was shocking to me! I've quite literally never, EVER in the history of hundreds and hundreds of appointments ever been seen so promptly. =) Even more importantly, Dr. Baker and her entire staff were warm, compassionate, and listened carefully to all of my concerns. It was obvious that Dr. Baker had taken the time to read my new patient forms, as she referenced what I'd disclosed at several points throughout our initial conversation and had a lot of insight. It felt like a conversation and a partnership in getting me healthy rather than the colder, less personalized approaches I am largely accustomed to. But with Dr. Baker I don't have to worry about rude office staff or a doctor who is too busy to care. I am a 46 year old male who came down with a horrible case of inflammatory arthritis. It shook my world and debilitate every joint in my body. It hit so hard and fast that I had to walk with crutches and rent a wheelchair. My kids and family had tears in their eyes watching me suffer. I was recommended to Dr. Baker from my internist who I have trusted for 10 years. Dr. Baker was amazing. She sat with me each visit and treated me as if I was a relative. On weekends I got emails from her checking to see how my progress was. If I responded that I was not doing well she would call me. Her diagnosis was spot on and my recovery (which I was panicked would never happen) proceeded exactly as she told me it would. Her staff, Hazel, Maria and Umberto became true friends to me. I could also see them hurting for me when I would limp in to the office. I would recommend this office to anybody who wants the best treatment for themselves. It truly made the worse time in my life bearable.. Dr. Baker is a smart, caring devoted Dr. She was also very open minded in dealing with my eastern (homeopathic) treatments as well by sharing my info with them so everyone was in sync.
