What was an enjoyable visit to a wonderfully diverse wine and spirits store ended in us leaving without the purchases we planned. Upon asking one of the staff about whether a particular bottle was open in the bar to sample, we were treated very dismissively and rudely. What a bizarre experience. I am in my late 50s (this becomes relevant later) and needed to buy some champagne on December 30, This was never going to be an ideal time to be shopping for champagne, but I wouldn't have expected it to go quite this badly! My dad's partner is a regular here and waited in the car while I went inside. They didn't have any of the options I was looking for, and although I expect to pay a little more at a small wine shop compared to the grocery store I was appalled to find common brands like Veuve Cliquot were marked up 50%. It took great effort and time to get service and when I did the gentleman serving me was extremely condescending, which I found amusing, because it was fairly clear that I know as much or more about champagne as he does. He mansplained to me that TRUE CHAMPAGNE IS ONLY FROM THE CHAMPAGNE REGION OF FRANCE. After I had asked for Duval-Leroy Brut Reserve, which, my dear reader is the cheapest true champagne. He'd never heard of it. Roederer Estate is Cristal's California version. Yes, not a true champagne but I had already failed on my first several requests. Not the fault of the shop itself, but the wine tasting going on (which was why nobody could help as the staff were happily drinking with the customers) appeared to draw a lively crowd of extremely eager 60 something men. Was that flattering or annoying? All I know is that a quick run into the liquor store, which should have taken no more than five minutes ended up being nearly 30. Before I settled on a bottle of Perrier-Jouet Blanc de blancs. Delicious and not overpriced at all and Roderer Estate Brut (200% what I normally pay). Both were last bottles, I found both myself in random locations. I definitely won't be back. 3 stars because the wine selection looks great and if you are a dude the wine tastings look like a helluva party. Minus 2 for crappy service from the 'wine guy" and wildly unorganised champagne section. read more

Great place. They have moved from St. Francis to Aqua Fria. They have a large selection of wine and liquor. A small room off to the side for tasting or just opening a bottle of wine ($5 surcharge=a bargain) to drink. I did a sake tasting here that was fantastic. Had a drink at the bar. The selzer water was flat and I asked for another one to be made. The assistant manager, Jim Stephens, told me that if "I didn't like my drink , then I had bad taste." A fantastic local spot! We have a family home in Santa Fe and try to visit a few times, yearly and actually just found this business. They have been around for 14 years and celebrate local wine, beer and spirits as well as house a sensational collection of beverages from across the globe. We went in New Year's Eve for champagne. They were sold out of what we were going to buy initially. The sales person suggested a nice alternative. We are excited to try the bottle. When we walked in at least three staff asked how they could help and they mentioned their tasting corner. We will definitely be back in to sample some wine! Highly recommend! read more

Haters be damned, there's still nowhere else in Santa Fe with the selection of Susan's. From their variety of Champagne champagnes to the abundance of rare and imported beers, this place offers plenty to keep me satisfied and coming back. Sadly, the cherished Saturday beer tastings have been put under moratorium, but I'm hoping someday they will return. What can I say, I love tasting delicious beers, but I understand that offering free samples of expensive drinks can be a risky business proposition. My last visit ended abruptly as there was a private event going on and they wouldn't let me in. But so what, let's talk about beer. When I was head over heels for Duchesse de Bourgogne, I happened to discover a kriek by Brouwerij Verhaeghe on the shelves at Susan's. My mind was blown. It can be hard to find flemish red ales, gueuzes and lambics, but the selection here is top-notch. For the discerning customer (and pocketbook), take your business to Susan's. Susan's has been my go to BEER RUN shop in Santa Fe for years now. Their craft beer selection is fantastic, and they have a section where you can make your own six-pack: which indecisive people like myself adore. Their single malt whiskey selection is also impressive. I found Select Reserve Talisker for under $100, and they also have some rare and limited final edition whiskey available. The staff is always helpful: they have special ordered craft beer for me, and also shipped single malt whiskey to us in another state. I can't even count the number of times a member of staff has volunteered to check their stock in the back for something I am looking for and not finding on the shelves. They have a resident craft beer expert, and the guy is extremely knowledgeable. The prices are standard for Santa Fe, actually, considering their proximity to downtown, the prices are pretty fair. It is not uncommon for me to walk into Susan's and pass an hour looking at their stock and chatting to staff. I've never left here empty-handed or hearted. read more

You don't have to shop at Susan's if you know what you like to drink and you're not fussy. However, if you want to check out new possibilities, find new favorites and get good advice, this place is great. They've recommended new things to try and their advice has been spot on. For instance: Gunpowder Gin. Old Bardstown bourbon. The have tastings that are great and will inform you. I write this review with some hesitance, since I don't want the rest of the craft beer drinkers out there to know about the great selection here. I may be aiding and abetting some other craft beer geek in finding a gem that could have been mine. But the place deserves credit, because the beer selection here is great. Good craft, good New Mexican craft and plenty of the European classics. They also have some Japanese craft that none of the Albuquerque stores have. Well done. The prices are also very fair (and thus very un-Santa Fe). The liquor selection here isn't massive but there are lots of gems at very fair prices. I did see they had Pappy Van Winkle 12 year as well as one lone bottle of Sam Adams Utopias. Cool. The staff is friendly, talkative and cool and I always appreciate that too. read more

I Loves me some Liquor! Happy Hour begins with excellent liquor, mixers, wine and beer. Of these things, you can find them all right here at Susan's, or as my SFe friends call it, Susie's. It's funny because I don't drink as much as I used to but I still have an appreciation for the craft of Spirit distilling and fine cocktail making. A great cocktail begins with great booze. Finding great booze is no longer a problem for me now that I have discovered the treasure chest here at Susie's. Selection and price are spot on here, and to go with that I found that the service here is also a treasure. I asked for some help in finding local micro-distilled Spirits and I was thankfully swayed away from a certain Indiana made Bourbon that was only bottled in NM, and I bought the old reliable Overholt Rye instead saving myself $23, woot! To that I say thank you for the very helpful and amiable staff on hand here to assist in finding the right Spirit for what ails you. I have a new fave drink in NM, Bubbles! Yes the fine French bubble makers, Gruet, make their delicious drink in ABQ and I love it! What's even more awesome is the outstanding selection of Gruet's and the astounding prices they sell them for here. They even have my fave, the "Red", Sauvage for $18, NICE, and if I'm feeling a little cheapish they have the "Green", Blanc de Blanc Extra Dry for $14. Dude! Nice! Happened to be walking distance to our hotel in Santa Fe; decided to check it out. They had a great selection of local beers, as well as your standard affair. My friend who accompanied me is allergic to wheat, and Susan's has a small separate section of gluten-free beers. Not only was the selection great, but the staff was extremely friendly (reminded us of the midwest) and actually went to the trouble of helping us plan our stay with must-sees and restaurants to try. Stopped in from out of town and was looking for a few choice selections. Found a great selection of small batch spirits... Most of all the service was exceptional. Very knowledgable staff and excellent suggestions. Having someone with real knowledge when looking for wine, champagne, or spirits makes a huge difference. This is a great place to try new sips and learn about quality small batch selections. Bonus points for having a big variety of cold beverages ready for drinking and sipping... We come to Santa Fe at least a few times a year, and no visit seems to be complete without a stop to Susan's. While not the cheapest place that we have been, they do have a pretty decent selection of higher end alcohols, wines, and beers. We tend to be very disappointed in beer selections at liquor stores. but Susan's has never let us down. We will be back. read more

Is there another "Susan's" that I don't know about? Possibly since the one I have interacted w/ on Agua Fria is a clown show to be avoided. I moved to S.F. 3 months ago. I had a question re availabilty of a wine (which isn't hard to find) which I e-mailed to their customer service address. Never got a repsonse. About a month later I went into the store and had another question- I spoke with a nice fellow but he didn't have the info and suggested that I wait and speak with an elderly gent who was presently on the phone. I waited about 10 minutes and gave up. I phoned susan's a day later, spoke with a nice woman who didn't have an answer to my question but was certain that her "wine buyer" (or it could have been wine mgr) would. She took my name and number and said I would hear from the wine buyer in a day or two. It's been over 2 weeks and I didn't receive a call. So junk customer service, mediocre inventory, and comparatively high prices make this store an avoid. I try to stay away from chain stores but Total Wine in Santa Fe is about a 10 minute drive, has better pricing and selection and actually has a few employees that are knowledgeable and helpful. The stars offered here are for the hard working and attentive employees. Decent selection of wine, but almost all very overpriced, except for a few of the hugely high-end wines, which had less of a markup. Was pleased to see they have the 2008 Boxer, which is a simple but fantastic favorite of mine. Susan's Has definitely has its problems over the years. Up and down, depending mostly on the dysfunctional sales staff that had me avoiding the place. They seem to have figured that out. Recently whoever is doing the wine inventory really knows their stuff. An oenophile friend told me years ago if you don't want to do your homework look at the importer. It works 90% of the time. Were talking mostly French. He gave me a list of ten importers that know what's what. The current buyer has my friends taste, as do I. The staff is greatly improved. read more

I've been to two wine tastings at Susan's recently. They have a great selection and the people running the tastings have been extremely knowledgeable and attentive. Last time I was there with my parents who are local and go to a lot of wine tastings, vineyards, distilleries, etc. My father has very expensive taste and is not afraid to spend a large sum on a good bottle. He has spent PLENTY at Susan's. But last time we were there, one of the employees, an older woman with grey hair came and rudely stepped DIRECTLY in front of my father without any acknowledgement or apology and stood there for a VERY uncomfortable amount of time, directly between him and the bottles he was perusing, and discussed with a coworker that they have previously had a better selection from a particular distributor. It was incredibly oblivious and rude. Every other person in the store was polite, respectful, knowledgeable and helpful, but this woman was just unbelievably oblivious that she was being incredibly rude. She very poorly represents your store. read more

Great shop with quite the selection of beer. I picked up a number of NM beers, but also found bottles and cans from To Øl, Dupont, Upslope, Mikkeler, Cascade, etc. The employees were friendly and I would definitely come back for more purchases if I lived nearby. read more
