2.5 so I'll round up to a 3. I really wanted to like Sushi 99, but this is the highest rating I could give it. Completely empty on a Friday night, ok. Our server was very nice from the get go. She brought us soup (I didn't try it but my boyfriend liked it) and holiday roll (fried krab) on the house. The holiday roll was very good. We ordered chicken skewers appetizer which was also very good and the portion was pretty big considering the price (less than $5). I thought we were off to a great start. Now, for the sushi - this is where it goes downhill. We ordered a crunchy roll, a mango shrimp roll, and a chicken tempura roll. Sadly, all of them were much less than mediocre. The mango roll has waaaay too much mango and nothing else, so it's super sweet yet super bland. The chicken and crunchy roll completely lacked flavor. The rice was very mushy (not in a good way) and the temperature of the rolls was weird. Hate to say it, but easily the least favorite sushi I've ever had. I have absolutely no idea how people rave about the sushi here. It's not good at all! Service was very nice and everything except the sushi was good. Quaint, peaceful restaurant that comes with a free soup when you come in. Their sushi rolls are a bit pricey, but satisfying. Tried the holiday roll, which came in a tiny portion but tasted heavenly and the dynamite roll was surprisingly delectable. I've had better habachi, but it's also pretty cheap as far as habachi goes so I'll just chock it up to getting what you pay for. Wow! So last night I had the lovely opportunity of going out to eat at this place. I was already an avid customer of Sushi 99, but would always take the food to go. This time we decided to dine in and OMG I am so happy we did. The customer service here is great, very attentive staff. The place was pretty packed last night for dinner, which to me is always a good sign of a healthy, delicious restaurant. As soon as we sat down within minutes we were brought miso soup and the holiday roll on the house. OK, this is where they got me... food on the house? Oh they know how to treat their customers well! The soup was tasty and the holiday roll, absolutely amazing! I believe it was crab wrapped in a tempura batter, but all you need to know is that it was so amazing! I ended up ordering the Crunchy and the Rock N Roll, both 5 stars! My husband got a whole mixture of about 4 different rolls, which I can't remember the names, but they were also extremely tasty and were presented so beautifully on his plate. The sushi here is perfectly made and very fresh tasting. I am so happy that we have this amazing little spot down the street from us. The food is also very reasonably priced, especially compared to other sushi spots. If you are in the area, this is a must! read more

This is such a great sushi place. The staff is very friendly! The wait isn't long we had 9 people and it only took 15 min to get a table at peek diner time. The waitress was very attentive. Since my daughter and I were in the area we gave Sushi 99 a try for dinner. We arrived and promptly were promptly seated. Drink orders were taken followed by a complimentary appetizer and soup being delivered - before we even ordered which was a very nice touch. The appetizer was AMAZING. . . it was a fried sushi roll which was one of the best things my daughter and I ever had; the soup was average. We ordered 2 sushi rolls and while my higher priced roll was good, my daughter's regular sushi roll was 'ok' - not much flavor and dry Service was excellent. We'd give Sushi 99 another chance, but would definitely get the appetizer roll. This place is worth a try. read more

After a long day of helping the daughter prepare for her move we were hungry gals. I'm a sushi gal, but my daughter isn't. But since Mom came all that way to help her, she suggested going here since it's near her apartment. We walked into a very clean and bright space and were immediately seated. Our orders were taken quickly and a small Holiday Roll was brought out to try. It was crab with cream cheese and fried. WOW it was yummy. Even the daughter was loving on this one. This was followed by two bowls of miso which comes with each meal as well. I ordered some California rolls and a soft shell crab roll while the daughter ordered the Hibachi Chicken. My California rolls were standard fare, but the soft shell crab roll was outstanding! Often I'm leery of ordering soft shell crab in new places because you just don't know what you'll get. I guess the long day and hunger made me forget about that...and I'm glad! The daughter's plate was loaded with chicken, veggies and rice and she eventually gave up trying to eat it all and just finished her chicken. She say she will be back...I'll second that! Next time I plan to be a bit more adventurous....and I can't wait! read more

We were going home to South Florida (3h Drive ahead) and picked this place for the reviews and the food on display. With a long bicycle ride in our bones and an empty stomach it looked like a good place to refill. Unfortunately we did not get to taste the food. We had called ahead to see if they would accommodate us with a place to sit, while feeling secure about the bikes we had in tow. After we arrived that changed for no apparent reason, but we suggested a table were we could safely store the bikes and not being in anybody's a way. After reviewing the menu and starting to pick some items we were asked to leave in a not very nice way. Apparently no love for bicyclists, for that reason we will never return! We are used to having our bikes around and are picking places where we assume we won't bother anybody with them, but still don't have to worry about them. We always understand when we are kindly turned away because there is simply no space and a concern for safety... but that wasn't the case here, that is what made us quite upset... and of course the empty stomach didn't help... we ended up finding another place to fill up before going on the nightly Turnpike trip, a place that excepted us and our concern for the bikes with a smile. read more

I was curious about the mixed reviews of this place and now I understand..here goes my mixed review! The good- The decor and presentation were nice and my friend enjoyed the sweet mango roll a lot. Complimentary clear soup and holiday roll! The disappointing- I always order the spicy tuna roll as a "litmus test" when I go to a new sushi restaurant and_ it is my favorite roll. Unfortunately, this roll was not spicy at all and was just meh. They also put tempura flakes in it, which I'm generally not a fan of and feel it is just filler. I wouldn't order it again. I also had the TNT roll which was okay..if you like white sauce. The seaweed salad was good but wish there was more of it. While I'm not generally critical of service (I'm all about the food!), when the service detracts from the meal it does make a difference..the server was not communicative and seemed bothered when we would ask questions. Also our food came out and different times so I was done eating a long time before my friends' food came out. The prices seemed a bit high (e.g. $13.95 for tofu teriyaki) Overall, I might be willing to go back to give it a second chance if I'm in the Avalon Park area and I might try a specialty roll, but there are definitely better sushi places in Orlando like Mikado Sushi. read more

This is not my first time at Sushi 99, I have been here many many times, it was a frequent spot for me when I used to live in central Florida, it only keeps getting bettter and better. I am an avid sushi fanatic, and I have been unable to find better sushi anywhere else. Everytime I am in town, I have to stop and this Japanese Marvel! Parking at Sushi 99 is very easy, it is located at a plaza that provides plenty of parking. At peak hours, it may take a minute or two to find a spot. Service is excellent, you are welcomed with a free soup and fried carb sticks while you look at your menu, the staff is helpful and pays close attention to detail. The chefs at the sushi bar are glad to answer any questions. The restaurant provides both table and booth sitting, the ambiance is dim lights with Japanese decor, the restaurant is quite, an easy spot to have a conversation. The bathrooms are clean, the restaurant is organized and spotless. I have personally met the owner before, he treats his staff very respectfully and keeps that culture in the restaurant resulting in positive results. The food is incredible, everything tastes absolutely amazing. The lava roll and Phoenix Roll are my favorites, but the menu provides an endless amount of options for everyone. I wanted something light so I ordered salmon fried rice and some sushi. Nothing fancy was ordered and certainly met expectation on flavor. I found it odd that the fried rice was simply a bed of rice with a filet of salmon atop of it. It was visually disappointing, however was surprisingly flavorful. I have ordered sushi from here before and have not been disappointed so all in all, I will continue to order from here. I'm looking forward to dining in at some point in the future as well. read more

Best choice of sushi in Avalon Park. Clean. Consistent and tasty. Not as authentic compared to sushi in other areas, but if you're looking to get your sushi fix this is a great place to try. We get the spicy tuna and salmon roll. They usually add tempura flakes in the mixture, but we ask to leave it out. Their kelmon roll is a good sushi option and shrimp udon noodles is a great kitchen entree as well! We usually call in and order out. It's a hit or miss with the servers and whoever answers the phone. They can be really rude or really nice. read more

This is by far one of the best sushi spots I've visited since I've moved to Orlando. It's conveniently close to the house, the staff are friendly, and the sushi is amazing, and the price is reasonable!!! If you love teas... recommend the hot green tea.
