They made some recommendations and we tried the sashimi salad, seaweed salad, spicy tuna roll, volcano roll, spicy shrimp roll and a roll with mackerel (can't remember the name). They were all delicious and fresh, no fishy smell or taste. I would've liked the spicy tuna and spicy shrimp roll to have been a little spicier but overall good. A great location for lunch- I ran in 30mins before closing and the staff was excellent, accommodating, did not make me feel rushed or unwanted. My friend and I were the last to leave- the staff went to have lunch in the back, but often checked if we wanted more tea.. I felt every bit welcomed and it was greatly appreciated as I was having a hard day. I recommend the five herb tea- you'll enjoy the entire top and feel healthier with every sip. The menu has extensive Sushi options, however I opted for shrimp tempura and salad which came with rice and small miso soup- the shrimp were perfect! Golden brown, crispy- not oily.. the salad was made with the asian ginger dressing (my favorite, I wanted more). Lunch was enough to fill me but not cause me to feel stuffed- so I could get back to shopping. The beautiful asian decor is filled with many interesting art pieces and designs such as hanging paper umbrellas, and origami. Bento box should come with soup no matter what. Called a few times to confirm that it does not come with to go orders but staff was firm on a hard no. We normally eat in and its great but check your to go options before you order, especially if you want soup. read more

3/5 Service: Stopped by for lunch today, this is my first time trying this place. Upon entering, I was greeted and told to sit anywhere I wanted. I opted for take-out instead and was given the lunch and sushi menu. I wanted to see the pricing of the sushi, and the host was nice enough to help me with a sheet that had pricing. Once I received my order, I realized they had forgot my miso soup. I got it once I went back in but then I had to ask for a spoon. Food: The miso soup was honestly the star of the entire meal. I was not impressed with the rolls at all. The salmon skin roll was just okay, but better than the spicy crunchy shrimp roll. For one, it was not spicy at all, secondly the seafood it was wrapped it was basically inedible. I literally could not chew it, which is the first time that's happened. I wish I could've gotten a refund to the food alone, $19 down the drain. Ambiance: The restaurant was nice, clean, and quiet. Would be nice for lunch or dinner, especially since they have plenty of seating. Overall: I will not be returning, although the service was decent. Been going back and forth in regards to this spot. Location is cool. Food is so-so. It's tough for me to be critical of someone who opens their restaurant and tries to provide their gifts. I can make up a bunch of stuff about what happened to the restaurant, but what I can report on is only what we tried. For our experience, we're one and done. The quality of the fish is not there and the presentation isn't classic. It's Americanized or Supersized...and that's not traditional cuts or preparation. The sushi rice may have just been rice because we tasted nothing of what should be in the rice. The slices were huge, not complaining about the offering, just recognizing that it changes the taste and the experience. Fried oysters were actually very good! Full disclosure, served in a 5 star restaurant with incredibly fresh fish and a disciplined presentation bringing traditional Japanese to the States without compromise. The back and forth in my mind was due to the fact that if I ever give less than 4-5 STARS, I usually decide based on a feeling if this will even matter to the proprietor and if improvement is on the radar. Sushi Ave has two locations, one right on Decatur Square and the other on Ponce. You can find tables outside in the courtyard, there's a sushi bar and of course seating inside. I was looking forward to dining outside but there were too many flies in the area so I decided to dine inside. The sushi was just okay for me at 4 stars but the service is outstanding at 5 stars. I was immediately welcomed, checked on periodically while I was waiting for a friend by the hostess. Our waiter was very pleasant, answered our questions with a smile, gave honest recommendations and didn't rush us. Everyone was very friendly, even the Sushi Chefs greeted us. It's a very warm and welcoming environment. I love sushi and was looking forward to this meal for a few days so I ordered my favorites: Tempura Shrimp - $6.50 it tasted like something was missing, nothing special and tasted like TJs brand Seaweed Salad - $3.50 tasted fresh and good taste One cool thing about their menu is that they have pictures of all of their items which makes it helpful with ordering, especially if it's something you're not familiar with. They even have drawings of their rolls which lists the ingredients, it's like a sushi diagram. Love it! I recently ordered to go and had another great experience that was consistent with the dining experience. Sushi Avenue is a favorite of a friend of mine, so I've been there a few times with her and some others. It's on the Square in downtown Decatur but seems to maintain a low profile. Did you know Sushi Avenue has been around since 1997? I sure didn't. It's also not a huge place which weeds out lots of large groups, resulting in a nice mellow atmosphere. They've got a large amount of rolls you can pick from (complete with helpful cartoon diagrams), and there are other Japanese classics like noodles. Something for almost everyone. I got the salmon poke don ($19) the last time I was there, and while it was not the most exciting dish in existence, it was certainly pleasing in both taste and portion size (comes with miso soup and salad too). The warm service also adds to the experience. However, it's inevitable that one person your group ends up going to the other Sushi Avenue on Ponce. So definitely make it clear which one to meet at, but this is all on Sushi Avenue. Putting two restaurants with the same name near each other is bound to cause confusion! read more

97A health inspection as of May 2014. Although this restaurant has a good health inspection score, it was a horrible dining experience. A friend and I dined on a weekday evening for dinner. We entered and the waiter yelled across the room to tell us to sit at the table right next to the door. We waited for a good 10 minutes until another server came and brought us menus and ask if we needed drinks. When the water finally came, I asked for straws. The waiter said she'll bring some out after taking our orders. The straws never came. My friend waved the waiter down and asked for straws and she turned around to a stand with utensils and handed us two straws (why didn't this happen initially if the straws were right there?). To continue the service here, our food took about 15-20 minutes to be served CONSIDERING there were only 3 other tables dining that finished their entrees already. The waiters seemed in a rush to clean up and close the store when there was clearly 35-40minutes left until closing time. Never again. Aside from the service, the food was okay. Sushi rice was mushy and wet. Probably too much sushi vinegar used. The raw fish (salmon/tuna) was not fresh. My friend's roll with raw tuna bled color onto the sushi rice. I expected a little more from this restaurant being the only sushi within downtown Decatur. read more

Always fresh, always delicious! We have been here a couple of times and this week we got a sashimi plater, a Decatur roll, a spider roll, and a spicy tuna roll to share between 3 people. It was a takeout order so we did make our own rice at home (otherwise it would not be very filling). The sashimi plater had a nice selection of fishes (except the imitation crab, we want real fish!) and everything was fresh and creamy. The two specialty rolls were HUGE, they too were very yummy. The spicy tuna roll was strange because it was just a regular tuna roll with hot sauce on top. All in all, we were always happy with the food and service here, highly recommend! read more

My husband loves this place. I can't disagree. The service is very good and the sushi is really good. They don't have a vast variety of specialty rolls though, but what they do have is really good. We went on a Friday night, it was a line of two parties waiting to be seated near the entrance, the guy working there was extremely rude telling us to move so he could get by. He then told us to sit anywhere as there were plenty of open seats inside. We asked to sit outside and he ignored us and mumbled under his breath. Once we sat down, we waited forever to get menus to the point we walked over and got them ourselves then waited forever to actually talk to the pleasant waitress. There is no parking lot for this location, so you will have to take a lyft, MARTA, or park in a garage/street parking in Decatur if you are not within walking distance. Generally good food, pretty good prices for a restaurant in the square, and good, friendly staff here. I have been coming to Sushi Ave for years, and the food has remained consistent. There are many sushi selections here, but I only tried the California Rolls, which were good. Though I am not a sushi fan, my friends loved it here. I have eaten at both Sushi Avenue locations in the past couple of weeks. This location in Decatur Square is my favorite. It has a cool interior, with the Sushi Bar almost right at the entrance and cozy booths/tables all around. There is also patio table seating outside if the weather is conducive to an outdoor meal. One of the perks of this restaurant, IMO, is the visual menu with pictorial "diagrams" of the sushi rolls. I think one review described it as IKEA-esque...either way, I like it! It really helps if you want to try a new roll because you see what ingredients are in it AND how it's rolled, so no surprises...neat :-). My most recent meal consisted of the Yellowtail, Tuna, Salmon and Shrimp Nigiri, which were all super fresh and seemed to "melt" in my mouth...well, if that's possible with sushi LOL. Also, I had the Decatur Roll (Yellowtail, Salmon, Tuna, White Fish, Roe, Cucumber, Avocado)...love this roll...and, Calamari Roll. It might be my imagination, but it seemed like my sushi was slightly better at this location. Needless to say, I really enjoyed it. Now, combined with the cost, I felt like I got a good value for the overall food and experience. Service was terrific and the sushi Chef was super cool! One other thing that I appreciated--this location is open Fri-Sun during the odd hours between Lunch and Dinner, when most other downtown Decatur restaurants are closed. Also, because I dined at non-peak hours...street parking was fairly easy to find and I only spent $2. Keep in mind, metered parking is enforced 8am-6pm Mon through Sat (2 hour limit) and FREE on Sun. Then decided to check out the Square, and lo and behold, it was another Sushi Avenue! But this one was open for lunch. Phew. Not really sure what the scoop is behind all this (any Decatur natives, I am sure you yelpers know better than I do... help...) but bottom line is Sushi Avenue - On The Square provided a top notch lunch. I, as a sucker for not only bento boxes but lunch specials also, went with a pretty awesome chicken teriyaki bento box that came with rice, miso soup, salad and California rolls (I know, I know, I need to actually check out the actual sushi next time. But I have a feeling that bento box thing might suck me in every time. I mean, seriously, it was only eight bucks). This is the other restaurant to the one on Ponce. This is at the square. I've been here couple of times and both times did not feel the food tasted better than the one on Ponce. My previous times, I ordered the ramen ($10) the noodles used were different, it was curly vs the straight ramen. The soup was bland, I had to add loads of soy sauce to get any taste out of it. The amount of ingredients were also less, the pork slice was also tasteless. This time, I decided to get the Pokedon. It was a dinner specials. This time,, my dish was better. They were generous with the diced salmon, and the sauce that was poured over made the fish and rice falvourful. And since this place got better I will give this place another try. First off, having this place close to the another restaurant of the same name is really a dumb idea and incredibly confusing. Once all of our party was at the correct restaurant we went ahead and ordered. The service takes a real long time here so don't go here if you're in a hurry. I had the calamari salad, a sashimi appetizer and a crunchy scallop roll. I thought everything that i ordered was good value for the money but their sashimi and nigiri prices were totally overpriced at like 2 to 5 dollars per piece, not order but per piece. Also the spring rolls full order was 2 rolls at about the size of a roll of quarters featuring frenchs mustard on the side. We all tried it and determined thats what kind of mustard it was. Kinda wierd for a japanese place ;p When I make it back here ill know what to order and I thought all the food we had was good, just the service needs to be a bit more snappy. read more
