Parking is limited, and you can immediately tell the small lot fills up fast, especially during peak hours. I stumbled upon Tenya while in town on a Tuesday, scrolling Yelp in search of a solid lunch spot, and I'm glad I did. This is a family-owned Japanese eatery that specializes in comfort food, and according to their website, everything is made from scratch, which absolutely shows in the quality. I placed my order online and picked it up with ease. I ordered the Shrimp Saku Saku appetizer along with a fresh garden Tenya salad. The shrimp were excellent, perfectly crispy with a flavorful panko coating that didn't feel heavy or greasy. The salad was impressively fresh and came with their house-made ginger dressing, which paired beautifully with the crisp greens and added just the right balance of sweetness and tang. Inside, the restaurant is quaint and cozy, with a decent amount of seating for its size. The customer service was warm and welcoming; the lady at the counter greeted me kindly and had my order ready shortly after I arrived, making the pickup process smooth and pleasant. A nice bonus is the selection of packaged Japanese snacks and drinks available at the counter, always a fun touch and something you don't see everywhere. Next time, I plan to dine in and explore more of the menu, along with sampling some of those snacks and drinks. Tenya is a great example of simple, thoughtfully prepared food done right. First time here, came in to get a "snack" that wouldn't break the bank. The cashier was super sweet & helpful. I ordered the chicken sandwich & the fries. They make everything fresh, took about 15 minutes to get my order. The Sando was sooo good! Chicken was freshly fried, the cucumbers gave it a nice crunch and the sauce was good. The fries didn't have enough of the seaweed, IMO, just tasted like regular fries. I didn't care for the sauce that the fries came with...it was like a sweet soy sauce, just didn't hit. I came here on a Tuesday evening while I was waiting for the doors to open at Eagle Eye Bookshop to attend the Ashley Poston book launch event. The staff was friendly and helpful with deciding what to order. The pork gyoza was tasteful and delicious. Very palatable. The Tenya chicken Udon Japanese Curry Mazemen was so good. I love udon noodles because of how thick they are and it was perfect. Loved the pieces of potato I got to eat throughout the dish. The breaded chicken was cooked well and moist inside. We ordered three types ramen. It was just meat green onion and noodles. There just was no flavor. No cabbage, sprouts, mushroom or garlic. The miso was very weak. I ordered the Chicken Katsu with Tenya Sauce which contains Japanese slaw and cucumber pickles and paired with side of Tenya Furikake Fries. Also ordered soy eggs to try! The fried chicken was great and not overcooked, and was even better with the refreshing taste from the slaw and cucumbers. (This type of sandwich is most likely better while eating at the restaurant rather than ordering by UberEats or Door Dash since it can potentially become soggy by the time it gets to you.) The side of soy eggs were also great and the yolk was runny - just how I like them! This was enough shared with a friend to keep me satiated until my next meal. It's rich, flavorful, and excellent on rice. Chicken katsu sando my wife ordered was good too but it needed some type of sauce. The fries were extra crispy and had some furikake seasoning on it which is nice. Furikake seasoning is my crack. I can't think of a food it won't enhance. Would I come here again? Yes. I wondered in at 5pm on a Sunday. The service was great and the food was delicious! I ordered a Soba Noodle Tenya salad with Gingeryaki grilled chicken and I would definitely recommend it. It's sweet with a hint of savory in the cucumbers and sesame. The reasons this establishment does not get a 5 is for the following reason: I left a tip for my waiter on my card, not realizing that only cash tips go straight to the employees. Although this is legal for all non-tip wage making employees, it's still unethical. All card tips at this establishment go to the restaurant and not the workers. There's also an Instagramable background in the front! Owner is also really friendly and attentive! I'm obsessed with Tenya and I've only been there once. I hadn't had any katsu since moving to Atlanta, so I was so happy to fulfill my craving at Tenya. On a friend's recommendation, I came for dinner, and had the chicken katsu sando with the tenya fries. The sando is a sandwich of thick toasted Japanese style bread, with thick juicy crispy katsu, cabbage slaw, and cucumber slices, topped with a sauce of your choosing. I went with the katsu sauce just cause it's a classic. This is a perfect sandwich. You've got bread that holds its own and doesn't disintegrate under the heft and juice of the sando guts. You've got crispy, you've got juicy, you've got acid and crunch and savory flavory. I would change nothing about this sandwich. You're perfect just the way you are. If you get the sando "meal" which is an extra $2, you can get a side. The tenya fries are some of the crispiest fries I've had recently, topped with furikake, with a side of Tenya mayo. I don't know what Tenya mayo is, but it is good. Honestly it was a bit surprising to get such good french fries at a Japanese place. All that for $12 is insane. And super satisfying. I am definitely coming back to try other things on the menu. They have katsu curry, too, which I was eyeing. It is counter service (order at the counter and they'll bring the food out to you) and pretty fast. On a Friday night they were busy but had enough tables to seat everyone.
