Looking for something different than we usually go for all you can eat sushi we found this place . Place was very calm and had their tables very well distributed to follow the social distance guidelines. Staff was very kind on the phone and in person . They are dry and not super bubbly but very nice and quick . We went for the diner menu that was 30$ per person . Lots of choices to choose from, love the teriyaki salmon . Nothing different than other all you can eat sushi but I really enjoyed the ambiance and their huge easy to look menu .

Same star rating however, I did find that the food and menu improved. I would give it a 3.5 stars if I could but still not my favourite place. Prices increased since I've last visited but it's expected. We came here shortly after restaurants reopened during Covid-19. It's one of the few ayce sushi restaurants opened during this time. They have a pretty good safety procedure put in place. They have limited seating so it's required to make a reservation or at least call ahead to make sure a table is available. We called in an hour before showing up with no issues. Some ayce places have time limits but I found it slightly odd that there was an order limit due to Covid-19. We made it work but we squished everything in the first order and used our last two orders as necessary. It makes it hard to plan out and not waste food. The food was pretty decent. Service was okay. Definitely and improvement from my last visit. It is still not my favourite place so it may be a while again before I come back. It's definitely an option during COVID-19 to get your ayce sushi fix as there aren't many opened.

Dinner $28+ tax. It is highly recommended to make a reservation. Call ahead. Full Covid mask, spacing, sanitizer is being enforced. They have a 3 round order written paper form to avoid waste. You can request multiple forms to order as much as you want as long as you completely finish each round before ordering the next. Service is good. The fried appetizers are lukewarm to cold unfortunately. The nigiri and sashimi are good. Do not order the "Pike Mackarel." Taking into account the current situation, this place is amazing.

Sushi Kan is lunch haven for me and my work colleagues. Every time we crave sushi, this is our go-to AYCE sushi place. Lunch is $15wkday/$16wknd; Dinner is $25 since the menu is larger. The quality of Sushi Kan is similar to every other sushi buffet in Ottawa; the food is decent, but quantity is really what keeps customers coming back. If you're a traditional fresh-catch-of-the-day-sushi connoisseur, this place won't be your cup of tea. The different sushi types they have are usually the table favorite. The "YummyYummy" roll is also a hit amongst my friends. I tend to prefer the Americanized rolls - california roll, spider roll, etc.. Taste is always consistent. :) Recently they've added some dimsum items on the menu. They're okay quality for the price you are paying. Teriyaki, tempura, udon, short ribs, fried rice, General Tsao's chicken, seaweed salad, wonton soup... hell even french fries and garlic bread!... are also on the menu. Dessert has gone downhill with the menu update (boo!). I really dislike the greentea and tiramisu replacement desserts that they added (and it puzzles me that each person can only order 2! none for me thanks!). Ice cream is as always perfect... and this glutton usually gets 2.... or 3... scoops. The randoms - Decor is simple Japanese-y and there's room for parties of any size. Though they do take reservations, I've never had problems just walking in. Service can be hit or miss depending on how busy it is and the server you have. Some times we'll have some dishes skipped, but 95% of our list usually makes it to the table in a speedy fashion. Tip: Get a stamp card! Every 10 meals, you get one free.

Some re-branding of the original Denny's logo on the front of the building.

I must admit, initially, the idea of sushi was a bit of a turn off for my highly westernized palette. But it was Sushi Kan that first turned me on to those compact mouthfuls of awesome which are Maki and Nigiri sushi. I've since had sushi at many restaurants and in my *vast* wisdom I've categorized my sushi experiences into three tiers of fishy goodness: 1. Food Court Sushi: Small and basic pieces, low on expensive ingredients and high on rice. Those plastic 'fast food sushi' bento boxes you find all over the place. Not terrible by any means, but not great either. 2. All-You-Can-Eat Sushi: This is where Sushi Kan falls. More care is put in these rolls then in your basic food court roll. More importantly, more creativity is put into this sushi. The options are more varied and exotic, while maintaining a price tag that won't have you homeless, begging strangers for pickled ginger, searching the gutters for California rolls. 3. Gourmet Sushi: Expensive as hell but heavenly. Freshness you can taste and usually stuffed to the gills with expensive ingredients. (Get it? Gills?) Good for treating yourself every once in awhile, but to keep the sushi cravings at bay, stick with the all-you-can-eat variety. Unless you're quite rich. In which case, screw you Ritchie Mr. Richerson. Enjoy your amazing sushi on a regular basis. I hope you choke on an umeboshi. People I've talked to seem to have mixed experiences with the two Sushi Kan locations in Ottawa. Myself, I've always left satisfied and with a full belly for about $25. (That's including a ginger ale, some coconut ice cream and a tip.) The service is a crap-shoot. I've had excellent service on busy nights, lousy service when we were the only ones in the place, and vice-versa. But frankly, with the way ordering is done there (the "just keep 'em comin'!" approach,) it's not really a big deal. There's always something on your table to mow down on. Every once in awhile you'll think you're done so you'll power down those last 3 shrimp tempuras, only to have your waitress bring a late order of yummy yummy rolls. Suck it up, cupcake. Eat it or you're paying full price for the uneaten portions. It could be worse, children starving in Africa, etc, etc. "But what items do you recommend?" you ask? Why, here's my favorites! 1. Spicy Tuna Sushi Pizza: Spicy salmon spread on a rice croquette with tempura flakes, roe and spicy sushi sauce. Don't be scared by the name. Or the minuscule amount of roe. 2. Yummy Yummy Roll: I'm not even sure what's in this one, but it's batter fried with a tasty sauce on top. Unagi maybe? Let's just say there should be a few more "yummy's" in that name. 3. Spicy Crispy Avocado Roll: Classic avocado roll with a tempura crunch. It's on the menu as S/C Avocado Roll. 4. Orange Peel Chicken (aka: raw fish-free item for scardy-cats): Gooooood stuff. Savory with a sweet citrus tang. Order 2 or 3 for a group because they disappear in a puff of smoke and of clacking chopsticks. 5: Red Dragon Roll: Warm sushi served with cooked salmon and some gooey cream cheese. Melt in your mouth yum with a veggie crunch. In closing, Sushi Kan is this: A large menu of delicious sushi and japanese food items, served to you by a staff who are mostly in it for the paycheque, at an affordable price. Go for it.

But this elevates that process and is Japanese, which is one of my favourite flavour profiles. The ambiance is so nice. There are screens between the tables so that you can cook and eat in private, which I really appreciated. Being new to the process and restaurant, I felt so fortunate to have Jarred as my server. He explained how everything worked and was so patient with me. Basically, you pay one price for all you can eat...and it's such a bargain! There are so many meats, sides and even desserts to choose from. Jarred helped me choose and was so patient explaining everything that had been marinated in soy sauce and was not gluten free. I was disappointed I couldn't have beef, so he told me he would grab some brisket without the marinade. I ended up ordering that brisket, shrimp and sausage for the meat. The sides were sweet potato in a brown sugary sauce, corn, pineapple, and rice. I can say that the sausage was my favourite, had a nice sweetness to it and different from the typical sausage you get elsewhere. You use the grill to cook everything which is so much more fun than just sitting and waiting for the food to arrive. Everything was so fresh and just tasted amazing. The grilled pineapple was divine! Jarred also suggested I order the Bibimbap. It was a dish with seaweed, veggies, and an egg on top. It tasted like an amazing sushi roll. I also had an UME pineapple drink. You can add an extra oz of alcohol for just $2. It was delicious. There are always staff around and they clear dishes you are finished with super fast. Everything moves there like a well-oiled machine. For dessert, I had this little creme brulee, which was just the right size not to overstuff your tummy. So amazing all warm and bubbly after it sat on the grill. One of the best I've ever had. While writing this review, I discovered there is a location relatively close to where I live in Waterloo. I will definitely be going. This isn't just an extraordinary dinner, it was an extraordinary experience. Perfect food, perfect service, and such a great value! This would be so fun for a date night or night out with friends. I will definitely frequent this restaurant, LOVE it! This location also has a parking lot, which is most welcome in Ottawa!

While eating, I found a piece of metal/steel wool in the chicken that was served to me. This is a serious safety issue, imagine if I have swallowed it. Then instead of addressing the situation properly, we were only offered 10% off, which doesn't reflect how serious this incident is. (Looks like really not) I even asked them how do they handled this situation, and they just said 10% off is the best they can do ‍ This is not just a small mistake, it's a food safety concern!! Posting this to raise awareness and hopefully encourage better standards when it comes to food safety.

The restaurant itself is due for a refresh without a doubt. Appears to have been last updated in the '80's. Which leaves it looking worn and shabby. Luckily we weren't there for the decor. We were greeted at the door as we came in and shown to our grill table which was preset for our arrival. We ordered some "exotic" mixed Drinks. Which were tasty but not Over the top delicious. We ordered the seafood combo, chicken and shrimp, and a chicken combo at the tapenyaki grill. Our "host" put on a chef jacket and cooked our food at the grill in front of us without the typical fanfare or show that we were expecting. This was ok with us but some might find it disappointing. The food itself was flavorful and generally properly cooked. The soup starter was supposed to be a chicken broth was tasteless and actually looked like a hot water bath with some mushroom flakes and scallions. We did find that the egg for the fried rice (which was an extra cost) was fried to a crispy rubbery texture but everything else was good with a tasty sauce that was not just soya or teriyaki. The portions were on the smaller side but enough just nothing left to take home. Overall the experience was under whelming for the price. They could easily improve by a refresh and slight changes to amounts of food. Specifically more vegetables, better soup flavor, and larger rice/noodles portions. The protein amounts were plenty even heavy compared to the rest of the portions. Overall ok, not worth a return visit though.

I've had sushi plenty in Vancouver and Toronto, and this place was disappointing in comparison (even to Toronto sushi). I think AYCE sushi is more popular in Ottawa. This is one of the few places that do a la carte. I found the prices to be a bit expensive for what you get. 3 of us shared a sushi and sashimi party tray. It came to around $30 a person, and was quoted on the menu to be for about 3-4 people. I would say it's barely enough for 3 very small people, let alone 4. It did not come with miso soup or salad. The quality of the sushi was nothing to be amazed about. Although it was probably a bit better than AYCE, I think for the prices, I'd expect better quality sushi. If I had to, I'd choose AYCE sushi over this in Ottawa. Also, in terms of authenticity, I think this place is Chinese owned. It is a small establishment, so if you want to be sure you get a table, I'd recommend reservations. There is street parking available on Somerset.
