Great low key place, no fuss and with an authentic menu!

Their raw food (sushi and sashimi) is great. The fish is really fresh. But the cooked food such as gyu tongue is just so-so.

This place is great if you want to get high quality fish. It is pricey, but you can tell they use better quality fish than most sushi places. Service was on point and very friendly (Japanese owned). We both got the chirashi bowls and the sashimi was excellent. We got the spicy hotate roll as well and it was great. Again, no huge super sauced rolls here. This is a more traditional sushi place with excellent fish. Definitely going to keep it in our rotation. read more

We ordered the beef stew, the hamachi Kama, spider roll, grilled black pork and the egg wrapped in eel. All dishes were delicious albeit small portions. The spider roll was delicious and non greasy, very well done. The beef stew was perfect, the beef was very soft. The only thing that I didn't like about the restaurant is the ventilation. I came out of it with a smoky smell in my hair and clothes. They definitely should work on better kitchen hood. read more

First time, here and I would say it is worth hopping over the hill for. Not fancy, but tasty authentic sushi in a relaxed family atmosphere. We had the multi-course sushi dinner for two, saving many words on ordering and you get lots of good stuff: miso, edamame, bonito/mini cucumber salad, tempura, yakitori, a big plate of assorted nigiri, capped off with a choice of ice cream all for one reasonable price. There are places in SF I like better, but this is close to home, easy parking, low key and plenty good. read more

Let me start with the good Pro: They have great traditional Japanese sushi. The sashimi breaks down in your mouth and their Ankimo is the right consistancy. Overall... Most of the food tastes slightly better than average. Con: The waitress was nice to us, but it seemed like she wanted to talk more with the people in the back than serve us. Beware of food with avacado in them. Although it looks good, I had some avacado that were not yet ripe and some that were almost black because it was left out too long. As you walk in the door prepare to smell cigarettes. They attempted to hide the smell with a citrus fragrance, but you can smell both mixed together and the only other place I smelled that was in China where they had to actually use real citrus to try and cover up the cigarette smell. On the side note, we ordered an alchoholic drink with grapefruit in it. Im not sure how many people like to juice their own grapefruit, but i find it a bit challanging with my size and strength. Therefore, I would not recomend the drink for people who does not want to serve themselves. read more

My favorite place to get authentic Japanese food in the Bay. The owner takes pride in getting the highest quality fish for the sushi and sashimi. The service is spectacular. I like milder sashimi so I usually go for the hamachi and medai. Also the misoyaki butterfish (gindara misozuke) is prefect every time. As someone who grew up eating traditional Japanese food, I can say without reservation that the food here is the real deal. Sushi Kei never disappoints. read more

Dedicated chef serves yummy fresh fish. Omakase starting at $35; you can't find that kind of deal in NYC. Sushi rice done nicely, unlike Sushi Sam rice falls apart before the sushi reach your mouth. I will be back! read more

My friend took me here for dinner one evening and the sushi was great. We sat at the bar and let the sushi chef make us anything he felt like preparing. Everything was fresh and delicious. I especially loved the deep fried shrimp head from the amaebi. Mmmm... shrimp head! They also make very good tomago. The ratio of rice to fish was also perfect. I really like this place. I have eaten some of the best sushi, locally at Yuzu, Sushi Kei, Sushi Ran; in NY at Sushi Den and Nobu; and all around Tokyo. This place is not as fancy or expensive as those places, but it is great sushi, at a reasonable price in a really nice, traditional, local Tokyo drinking and food establishment. Been here a few times now, I always ordered their lunch special. Most of the time the quality of the food were great! Eespecially for the Sashimi! they once had Bluefin Tuna for lunch special, @$11, it was a steal. I just hope that their lunch specials are not limited to the first 10 or 15 customers who ordered them. read more

The best sushi, fish and menu in the Bay Area. Ryo, the owner, is a great chef of Japanese sushi and foods. His sake menu is first class too. If you expect authentic Japanese dishes you will not be disappointed. Ryo knows all of them and prepares them artistically and with care. Service is personal and polite. One of our favorite Japanese restaurants. The menu is not extensive, but seems authentic and true to the authentic Japanese diner. Nothing fancy here as far as decor, but everything is very Japanese including the service and sushi chef (Not always a given!). A dead give away to it's authentic-ness, beyond the tight, clean space, is that there is always a large contingency of Japanese diners there. Not the younger, 2nd or 3rd generation Japanese people, but Japanese business men sharing sake or sapporo's and getting increasingly louder as they down more drinks. The primary reason they are here is not for the drink, but for the food! Authentic, simple sushi can be found, rarely with more than one type of fish per roll! Most sushi can be ordered nigiri or hand roll style. The taste is simple and the fresh ingredients all speak for themselves...not too heavy on the sauce. The service always asks if you live Wasabi, which we do, but it is nice to ask. The fish is extremely fresh and always high quality. We love the sushi, particularly the fresh hotategai (scallop) and dragon roll. Also, they have wonderful appetizers like karaage, fishcake and mushrooms, and fishcake and cheese...yes! The agedashi tofu is very good too. Everything is understated, but very tasty! read more

we walked in here at the last minute not knowing what to expect. quite a lot of the items on the menu were in japanese without definitions of what they were. that kind of sucked because we weren't able to try different food items which was disappointing. we just ordered a lot of the nigiris and the fish were fresh and tasty. the food was good, but the service was not that good. read more

Lame. Lame. Lame. After living in San Bruno for 1 year, I'm convinced that Filipino food is the only decent food here. Despite my low expectations, I still found Sushi Kei. this place is ridiculous sometimes. my family and i went on a week night. there were maybe 2 other tables in the place so it was a nice quiet setting. after we sat down it took 10 mins for them to bring us water/tea and that was after asking twice. after ordering, they brought us the wrong orders and took over 20 mins just to make some nigiri. our dinner sets we ordered 1/2 of them were wrong. one dish we didn't even order and they tried to make us pay for it. in the end. for messing up our orders you'd at least think you'd offer it free to us or something but i guess not. they dont even have the excuse of it being busy, at least then i can understand but there was NO ONE there. what were you too busy watching sports or something to realize 'hey i have a restaurant to run and customers to take care of' read more

the quality of the sushi can be well above average, the rest of the menu is mostly average. but the whole experience is marred by the unfriendly attitude here, especially by the owner standing behind the sushi counter. after coming here countless times, I gave up. Dropped in tonight after craving some sushi. After driving around a bit through Millbrae, my roommate and I happened across this place and decided to stop in. This place has a homey, mom and pop feel. I ordered the deluxe chirashi sushi, an order of o-toro and amaebi nigiri. My roommate ordered the spicy tuna maki roll, regular tuna maki roll and a hamachi nigiri. All of the seafood was very fresh. The o-toro was butter and sweet as it should be, with no hint of fishyness. The amaebi was a little small, but also quite fresh and super sweet. The chirashi was similarly fresh and contained a good amount of quality seafood. Included were tuna, hamachi, tamago, shrimp, ika, scallop and even uni. Everything was priced very reasonably also which made it that much better. The service was quick, attentive and professional. All in all this was a good experience and I can easily see myself coming back here again. read more

We ate izukaya-style. The food is good here, but the prices were too high, just couldn't get over it. The sushi and sashimi were good. We ordered a combo platter plus some side orders, which tasted good. But we went right after to a shanghai dumpling place to fill up our stomachs. I been coming here 20 yrs. hands down my favorite. The sushi rice balance is perfect. Quality is always great. Tradition to have birthday dinner here for my family. The marinated Saba is the best In Bay Area. Ankimo is also the best. The texture is perfect and the taste go well with sake. And is made by the chef. Soft shell crab is the perfect batter. Live abalone is perfect size and he season the intestine and it's so crounchy. Go so well with sake too. No complain. read more

We ordered the dinner special (fried oysters, beef teriyaki and the assorted nigiri), amaebi, spicy scallop roll and otoro. The otoro and the amaebi was some of the best I've had in the bay area. The best thing about this place was that there was no line and we were seated right away! read more

This is my usual sushi spot. Close to home and always good. As authentic as you can get in the Bay Area. My only complaint is that the last few times I've been there, they were sold out of iwashi. That's what I usually come here for. This place is great because they serve a lot of things most places don't. Like kohada and iwashi just to name a few. If you like fresh authentic sushi, try it. If not. Don't come here cuz you wont' be able to appreciate it. read more

you can tell if the place is higher end is if they have the more expensive sashimi or sushi's like toro and and abundance of uni and if japanese actually eat there. over here its almost all japanese read more

We came in for lunch at 11:30AM on a Thursday, into a nearly empty restaurant, and they were in a hurry for us to order/eat/pay/leave, as they expected to have a lot of upcoming business, and wanted to turn the table (just in case). So, the attitude was bad, and service was pretty bad as well (as they didn't refill the tea, for example). The food was acceptable, given the low price, but given the many other nice restaurants nearby, I can hardly imagine why we would go to Sushi Kei ever again. Interestingly, their anticipated lunch rush never materialized, and when we left (at 12:20), most of the tables were still empty! read more

I definitely can not agree to those people thinking this is a 3 star or better restaurant after going there for a few times. I must say most of the time, service is good, but depends on who serves, food is between OK and good due to the quality is not steady, the Sushi chef....hope he is not the owner....seems depend on who you are, how you dress, number of people, and if not meet to his expedition, gives you an unfriendly look when you walk in, price is high.......very high compares to its food, portion, sitting arrangement, restaurant size and shape, location, parking, restaurant appearance etc. I give it a one star, may be one and a half at the most. Needs a lot of improvements to become a 3 star or better restaurant. read more

I got a very BAD experience. Foods just OK, no special. I paid almost $60 for two people,. We got one sushi combo with 18 special small & thin pieces Sushi (If you go to Japan supermarket buy one pack of combo is thick and better than their combo), One 6 pieces Smaller tura roll , not fresh spider roll and two big shrimps . Don't believe the photo, you won't get what photo shown. Don't even think to try, not Worth it. read more

After flying in from Honolulu on a red-eye flight, I came for lunch. I had the lunch special which was sashimi moriawase first with a cold Kirin beer at the counter. The restaurant became quite crowded quickly, and I was amazed to see Ryo-san and the single waitress take care of the customers so efficiently. He had to prepare the sashimi when the order was placed, and he kept fulfilling the orders in a smooth fashion for the entire lunch hour. I also had the omakase nigiri sushi which was superb while watching Ryo-san at his best. I'll defintely be back when I fly in for the Cal home games this season. read more
