I often come here to get decent affordable sushi to go. Today I came at 7:20 (their posted hours are until 8) and they told me they were closed, without apology. Inari, avocado roll, edamame, veggie roll. The inari are fabulous - huge and sweet and warm. The avocado rolls are normal and the edamame is good, I like that it's not covered with salt like a lot of places. The veggie rolls is OK, I ordered it once and the carrot or something was a little off tasting. I haven't gotten it since then. I've also brought home an order and found one of the rolls missing. I love the sunset roll! I usually buy to go, but you can eat it there too. Fresh, tasty and fast. They have some pre-made ready to go rolls, but they also have a nice selection of rolls you order from the menu. I love it for when I am on the go, grab a sunset roll (made to order) and keep shopping. Not fancy, but very tasty. read more

We stop by every couple of weeks for take out The sashimi has always been very fresh and the rolls are excellent. Very friendly staff who are both very nice and very fast. Prices are very good and it's a great place for when you don't feel like cooking or putting up with a crowded noisy restaurant. read more

This was actually good! I was skeptical because the whole setup doesn't exactly scream quality sushi. I got a spicy tuna roll and two pieces of yellowtail sushi. I'm telling you, it was surprisingly good. The spicy tuna was actually spicy, which is rare. And the yellowtail was flavorful and did not even need any soy sauce. Oh, and it's not expensive. I know that its not the type of place you can sit down and enjoy but I have to say I love the people working their and I always leave with a smile on my face. The fish is always fresh and if you ask the chef to make you something different you wont be disappointed he also makes beautiful hand rolls. Some of the best sushi I've ever had! On top of that, it was affordable so I can go back and have more whenever I want. Taking it to go is probably convenient but sitting at the sushi bar was a great experience. There are only four seats though so you might have to wait for one to open up like we did. Don't let the fact that it's in a supermarket setting fool you into thinking the sushi is sub par. We were very surprised by the quality of the fish and can't wait to go back. read more

We get takeout here regularly. It's good, decent sushi for a reasonable price. The head guy is very nice. Apart from 2 or 3 regular guys, there seems to be a rotating staff that takes orders and works the register. Sometimes, language is an issue with phone orders (usually with female staff) Is quality and service like something you would find at a sit-down restaurant? No. It's pretty much a takeout place with limited menu but it's good. Certainly not a destination but a good, reliable alternative to cooking. read more

Their meat does not taste fresh and their rice on the sushi is not good, it's always cold and stiff. After 6 months of eating there regularly I stopped! Their sushi sucks! I go to Alameda once a month for the antique faire at the old naval base. As soon as I leave, I head for Sushi King. They have an amazing selection of hand rolls which I've never seen on a sushi menu before. Last time I had shrimp tempura and spider hand rolls. I can't believe the number of whiners about this place. "They didn't smile and dance for me! Waaaaaa." You can tell from my history I don't give 5-stars lightly, but this place is spot-on. Yes, there are other places to go when I want ambiance or absolutely top notch high-end sushi, and pay double. This is not that kind of place, it's a small sushi stand with great prices and fresh fish. The redwood roll and the teka maki are excellent. The salmon is fresh and not slimy. I haven't tried the eel yet, but am looking forward to it. The portions are huge - one roll is enough to fill you up. Any place you can get a roll in norcal for under $8 that is BIG and fresh made with quality ingedients, you jump on it. The service CAN be spotty, mostly because the sushi chefs don't speak much English and rely on the cashier to translate. No beer, no sake, no frills. Just good quality sushi at rock bottom prices. Go elsewhere and be pampered; leave the seats at Sushi King open for me. read more

The style of the marketplace eatery follows that of "sushi bars" run by Chinese / Korean owners who serve elaborated, westernized "sushi", often far too embellished w. sauces and fancy names. (A rather comprehensive menu mainly featuring rolls - also noticed soba (cold buckwheat noodles) & uni (sea urchin) on the menu). They do not offer udon or grilled items. - Cherry Blossom - CA roll wrapped w. raw tuna to mimic a cherry blossom. The thin slices of tuna appeared artificially pink and imparted little flavor to the sushi. The imitation crab in the center was a notch above Costco styled party tray sushi. (~$8-9) - Spicy Tuna roll - extremely ordinary as far as to be nearly forgotten. Avocado came in fresh largish chunks which I appreciated for flavor and contrasting texture to the tuna (I had problems w. the tuna in all the dishes and considering that they use the same desolate chunk of tuna for all their dishes what could we expect from 3 orders that each featured tuna? (~$5) - Fuko Volcano roll - the best of the 4 dishes. Light tempura battered and fried rolls of nori-wrapped grilled mackerel (the description says tuna but the fish is actually saba mackerel). The fish to rice ratio is good, they give you quite a decent portion of fish inside each roll (the fish is the only filling). Served hot & topped w. tobiko roe. (~$8) - Chiryashi - (sashimi over rice) small-med bowl topped w. a variety of medium-thick slices sashimi. The mealy texture and tastelessness of the tuna confirmed its suspicious quality displayed in the glass case in front of the bar seating. Salmon looked fresh, 2 slices of tomago were unexceptional. 3 small rolls of squid w. nori highlighted the dish (fresh, good texture and slightly salty flavor). ($10) Steamed edamame pods are offered as appetizer as well as hot genmai tea. The pods are over steamed and salted but otherwise fine. The tea is mildly flavored for the genmai variety. * prices recalled from memory may be inaccurate. In summary: Go w. a coworker for lunch if neither of you want to venture from comfort-zone territory. Beware of the tuna. I would hesitate to return. read more

My favorite go to place for sushi! Although their selection is more limited compared to other sushi places, the fish is always really fresh and the rolls are delicious! All I need is my favorite roll, the Alameda Island Roll, and I'm happy as a clam for the rest of the day. My brother will only go to Sushi King whenever he comes to visit to satisfy his craving for the Double Hamachi Roll. They do not wash their cups all the time. I went last night and the cup smelled like fish. That means herpes can be transmitted. Watch out! Also their California Roll was bland, fake crab and all. I would not go back, they should be reported to the Health Department for unsanitary dirty contaminated cups. They use their cups and reuse it on the next customers, yuk!!!!! If you want a stranger's mucus and plaque, go to Sushi King in Alameda Marketplace. The Sushi King in Nob Hill Shopping Center does not do this practice though. They wash their cups. read more

Another sushi spot in the Bay and I have to say another winner. Couple of my friends recommended this place and I'm glad to say they have good taste. The first time I went was with a group of 8 people so that only equaled sake bombs of course. The place was small but they made use of the surface area. The food was just as good as imagined and everything was really fresh. If you truly eat the "real" stuff like sashimi and the fresh fishes then you'll like this spot. The prices weren't outrageously expensive either. The staff was super friendly and we even took a couple of sake bombs with the cooks! Thats always fun. read more

ordered #25 CA rolls with EAT24 for pick up. couldn't get through on the phone lines with the business to confirm they received my request for (4) #25 but when i was able to they assured me that my order had been received and that it would be ready for pick up shortly. sushi looked super fresh, although the rolls were a bit small, they taste great and i give them an A for presentation. i'm more of a KOBE-ya kinda girl but they are closed on sundays. definitely my go-to alternate. read more

I was pleasantly surprised when I recently had lunch here. I had thought it was more of a fast foodish place from the location and looking in the window. But instead, I found that my food was fabulous, the atmosphere pleasant, and the staff helpful. It may not be a high-end setting, but it was a delicious and reasonable lunch. I had lunch the other day with a friend because this place was highly reccommended, but I wasn't too impressed. The two of us sat at the bar and I ordered the Pink Dragon while my friend had the sashimi combo. Don't get me wrong, the service was great, but the food was bad! My Pink Dragon was could have used a few more minutes in the oven, it was so raw, i felt like i was eating sashimi! My friend's sashimi was even worse, because both the tuna and salmon pieces were covered in a slime texture - it was obviously NOT FRESH!!!! read more

this sushi isn't the best but it's good, and the prices are very reasonable. i come here when i'm looking to grab something quick - they have a bunch of pre-made options as well as an extensive menu. their spicy sauce is delicious and tastes good with their rolls. the owner/chef is very nice. it's definitely a take out place; there are only a few seats available. read more

I have shopped in the Alameda Marketplace off and on for the last two years. Last week I decided to try Sushi King. Even though it is small, and cluttered and not too inviting looking in their workspace. I ordered hamachi, maguro, and a roll to go. When I got home, and I live less than a block away, I found the sushi was very lackluster, small, thinly sliced, kinda dry and poorly presented, disappointing and not satisfying. However, the real kicker was the roll, which had some rancid tasting, stringy, fishy substance in it that I was turned off by, and it made me sick. I have had nausea, constipation and stomach cramps since eating at Sushi King. I have been taking various cleansers and pro biotics and I am now starting to feel better, but a week of nightly cold sweats and nausea, along with loss of appetite and shakes, constipation and misery is not well received here. I am not attacking the Marketplace itself, but Sushi King was terrible and I would never eat their food again. Beware. read more
