I live in Sausalito, CA. There are a couple of very good sushi bars between there and Mill valley. I know what I like. I travel to Alameda a couple times each summer to manage sailboat races. Tonight I was in the mood for sushi, so I went to Hashi Gawa and I am glad I did. Now I'm an old curmudgeon, so I don't like menus on a tablet, but in this case I fully understand. Their selection of out of the norm fish is excellent. The quality of their fish is excellent. The service from their wait staff was over the top. Prices were very reasonable. I have to come back to Alameda next month to manage another regatta and will definitely be coming back here. read more

Came here on a Sunday with a reservation for 5 people and didn't really need the reservation at all. The restaurant was empty and it was definitely a shame because we really enjoyed our experience there! All 5 of us ordered the omakase and added soft shell crab, uni sashimi, and a beer. The food came out beautifully plated and they were great at keeping our hot tea cups full the entire time. The omakase was reasonably priced and pretty worth it in my opinion. It was filling and we really enjoyed the different fish. We ordered both types of uni (Santa Barbara and Hokkaido) - the Hokkaido uni was our favorite! Be sure to ask the chef for their opinion too if you can't decide. The soup and the salad with the omakase was good - the dressing for the salad was pretty yummy too, though probably could've used a tiny bit less of it! I think with all the add-ons we really ran up the bill, but it was still really good, unrushed service, and just a nice peaceful spot for our group to catch up. Overall, definitely recommend for omakase in the area and extra plus that it is in a plaza so parking isn't an issue like some of the other popular places in Alameda. read more

I was craving a hefty bento box and decided to get delivery from Hashi Gawa. I heard about their dinner bento box and how it's a great value for the price. It took around 30 minutes for my order to arrive, which was reasonable. For the bento, I selected the veggie tempura, chicken katsu, and spicy tuna roll. There is a large serving of rice, a salad, and a small bowl of miso soup that also comes with this order. Starting with the chicken katsu, the meat was still juicy while the outer crust was both airy and crunchy. Although fried, it didn't become soggy and the chicken was still moist. There were a couple sauces it came with - one reminded me of a sweet mustard/mayo combo which was my favorite and it tasted amazing with the other items in the bento as well. For the veggie tempura, the outer layer was thin, light and had a nice crispy texture to it. It did not fall apart and was still coated the vegetables well. I was able to get broccoli, carrot, and slices of sweet potato - they were delicious and one of my favorite bites! It's also delicious with the dipping sauce it comes with. The spicy tuna roll was wrapped tightly and a good ratio of tuna to rice. If you have a high spice tolerance, it may not be very spicy to your tastebuds. The tuna tasted fresh and the rice was delicate and evenly cooked. I appreciated the large serving size of each dish in the bento and 100% agree it's a great value for what you get. I absolutely adore this place. It was my go-to sushi restaurant when I lived in Alameda and bummed that I live a bit farther away now. Whenever friends are craving sushi, this is always the spot I suggest. I almost always order the sushi combo for variety, and it's also an excellent value I feel. The fish is consistently fresh, buttery, and melts in your mouth - you can really tell it's high quality. My only minor wish is that they offered more unique house made desserts rather than the standard options you can find at most grocery stores. Tempura has a nice crispy batter and the prawns were plump not skimpy or chewy . I also got the Santa Barbara hand roll because I really wanted uni but they don't sell uni as an appetizer. The hand roll itself was good nice flavor loved the salmon eggs , just wish there was more uni ( probably because that's what I really wanted lol I'm being honest okay ). But the star of the show for me was the SPICY LION KING ROLL . I've had plenty of lion king rolls throughout the years but never had a spicy one and it was bomb . I think what makes it spicy is the sauce they use . Wasn't too hot just an extra little kick to everything going on . We were sitting right next to the sushi makers and they overheard us talking about how good it was and they loved our vibe . We three ladies went to Hashigawa for Friday lunch. The restaurant was only about half full or maybe less. It's kind of shame that they didn't have anymore customers on a Friday. The waitress was pretty nice and provided us with all the necessities for our lunch. We all ordered vegetable ramen. In the beginning I thought the broth was good but as I kept on eating I changed the broth being good to I never want to eat this again. I have had sushi here a few years ago which I didn't care for but I can't understand why they have a fairly good ratings. I can't say that I will be back. Came here during lunch time and from the moment we walked in we were greeted very kindly and was seated right away. Customer service was spot on. Definitely felt welcomed and well attended to. The place was clean and had enough space for a large crowd. We ordered the Omakase, dragon roll and a bento box. Their Omakase came with a variety of fresh fish, but not all of it was like OMG so good, like how I have eaten Omakase at other sushi places in the past. I would say 80% of their Omakase was really good and the rest tasted just like a regular nigiri. However, it isn't a deal breaker. I did like how their Omakase came with real wasabi. Their dragon roll didn't have imitation crab inside which is what I am used to, so because of that, I won't be ordering dragon roll from this place anymore. I've heard of Hashi Gawa but never has the opportunity to dine here since we had our favorites in Alameda. But we made it a point to dine here after hearing good things and that they had an omakase nigiri on the menu. It is located opposite Nob Hill in the Bridgeside Shopping Center and parking was not an issue. Arriving at 5:20, we had our choice of tables as we were the first patrons of the evening. Our waiter welcomed us and gave us an iPad which had the digital menu. He also placed a today's specials board on our table as well. Since we had looked at the menu on Yelp, we knew what we were going to order. We started with a Hamachi Kama as a starter. It was a medium sized kama topped with bonito flakes. It was a nice tasty starter. I had the Hashi Kaisen Don. It was their take on a Chirashi Bowl that was served on a wood plank. There were six types of good-sized pieces of fish, a shrimp and fish roe on a shiso leaf on top a bed of seasoned rice with a little ladle of fresh wasabi. This was so delicious! My W enjoys nigiris especially omakase nigiris. Our other regular place in town doesn't offer this on their menu. The ten pieces came out on a long wooden board. The fish on each nigiri was a nice sized slice with just the right sized rice ball. The W loved it. For dessert, we ordered a crepe cake and they put a candle on it for the W's Bday and they play a birthday tune on their AV and staff sang happy bday. We enjoyed the food, which was fresh and tasty and the staff was friendly. This is not a high-end restaurant, but a nice casual neighborhood restaurant serving delicious food. For the rolls, I often to go with Double Toro, Mango Devil and Snow White Crunch. Hashi Gawa Don is one my favorites. It's like decomposed chirashi bowl. Another one that I would recommend is the 10 piece omakase. In the bay area, in this days, you would not see an omakase deal this cheap. Their fish is super fresh and high quality. Usually during the weekday, you can call in to make a reservation. I would recommend you do so because it does get super busy around dinner time. Our orders came out shortly afterwards with the ramen looking pretty appetizing. The ramen was surprisingly tasty and the sushi tasted fresh. Our server was prompt and the dining area was clean. My wife noticed that our server was wearing a Kaisen Don restaurant (San Leandro) T-shirt. Our server acknowledged that the two restaurants were affiliated with each other. Name a omakase in the entire Bay Area at a better price point: $52 for 10 immaculate nigiri bites ($48 if you want sashimi). The highlights for me were the seared salmon belly with a dollop of spice, the akame (lean cut tuna) with wasabi, the umimasu (trout), and kanpachi (adult amberjack/yellowtail) with soy sauce. We also love their grilled kama - they offer salmon, hamachi, kanpachi, and tai (seabream), with the last two being especially large portions. You also cannot leave Hashi Gawa without ordering their uni+ikura spoon. I personally prefer Santa Barbara uni to Hokkaido uni (in addition to being cheaper it has a firmer texture that holds up better, it is also sweeter) but YMMV. Finally, I feel the need to highlight their freshly grated wasabi--it is so good and how wasabi should taste. It is so hard to go back to the stuff from the tube after you dine here. In any case, I feel torn posting this as an Alameda native, because I would hate to see a gem of a business like Hashi Gawa become super viral and turn into Fikscue (I'll never get to eat there again sigh). Service was great, had good conversation with one of my servers. The restaurant was a bit small so get there early so you can get a seat. One of the rolls ordered was the lion king. The bottom layer of rice was just stuck to the tin foil. All the sushis were room temperature, still very pretty and good but something I wasnt used to Scallop, good size, this was the one the waiter recommended saying it was good today. (Nigiri is 1 pc while sashimi is 2pc, is what he said but we got 3 pc sashimi). It was good, there was some texture to it, not chewy or stringy, you could play with it in ur mouth after chewing if that makes sense. It was room temperature which I wasnt used to Golden state warrior roll, made with mangos, gave it a unique taste. Mango with sushi always feels like it shouldnt belong but always surprises me. It was good Tonkotsu ramen was good, as expected restaurant quality ramen, slurpable and flavorful, love it. The nigiris were good, the rolls were good, all the fish were fresh, no complaints with the quality But something felt missing for me at least, my fam loved it and they never love any restaurants I choose lol. I think room temperature sushi felt different, and rice were brown which reminded me of brown rice too much but it wasnt and still tasted good just different I love sushi, can never go wrong with it Extra The lighting, the lighting was so dim, it was so dim that my camera even turned on night mode where it takes a few seconds of holding still before it takes the pic. (We came at night) I called for straw because I hate ice in my mouth when drinking water but the ice melted so quick that I didnt need straw. I've been meaning to try hashi gawa for awhile now and I was thrilled to finally giveI decided to give the restaurant a try, but honestly, I was a bit disappointed. My friend and I were seated immediately on Tuesday night without any wait, which was nice. However, I wished the staff had been more communicative. We were handed a tablet and assumed we were supposed to order from it but after several attempts to navigate the menu, we ended up having to flag down a server for help. For our first experience, it was not obvious that the tablet was intended for ordering, and I was taken aback by that. Additionally, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for date nights, as the birthday celebrations felt forced and overly loud, which made me uncomfortable. I understand that service can't always be perfect, but my experience was not what I expected given the positive reviews I had read on Yelp. As for the food, I thought it was good but not great. It's definitely not somewhere I would take my friends or family to impress them; it felt more like a low-key quick fix.
