Back in the day, when I was an intern around the corner, this used to be my spot for a weekday lunch. Actually, this may have been the first place I ever had poke and it was love at first bite. It's been almost a decade since then and I'm happy to report that it's still around and still worth it. I decided to return to my old stomping grounds on my way elsewhere. I was looking for a quick bite to grab and go and glad they were still open. Upon entering, I was reminded of how overwhelming their menu can be, but I think that's a good problem to have... better than not having enough options. Anyway I opted for two hand rolls and even though they were close to closing, the lone worker was friendly and asked if I wanted to dine in so I said yes as I could use some time off my feet. Started to get other customers after I arrived but the service remained attentive and quick. I was questioning my decision once seated and able to fully take in the menu but all those doubts quickly went away when my order arrived. Heftier hand rolls than I've had elsewhere and quite pleased. Good bang for your buck and tasty on top of that. This place is small and unassuming but a hidden gem for those that know. There's tables for eating, but I sit to wait for my order. All I know is, the place is pretty popular. I didn't want to do this but the owner doesn't seem to care so y'all should know. I get it he's older but take your time to read the ingredients. I've placed many orders and waited up to 45 mins for a poke bowl. I'm okay on waiting as long as my order is made right. This isn't the first time my order was wrong. The first time he added so many jalapeños.I can do mild spicy but not jalapeños. I didn't say anything bc it was only 1 wrong item and I was super hungry. This time it was like 5+ wrong items. I waited 30 mins. I called to ask him, to see if maybe he mixed my order w someone else's but all he could say was "I am older man and my eyes are not good" he told me I could just remove the veggies I didn't ask for and throw them in the trash. Food here was AMAZING! Visiting from out of town and we decided to check out this small business. Ordered the Philly, Lion King, Hawaiian, Shrimp Tempura, Caterpillar, & Salmon hand roll for $76 before tip. Portions were so huge we could barely pick them up with our chopsticks! It also wasn't just all rice and little fish, my salmon hand roll had huge chunks and everything we ordered was perfect for a party of 3. Service was a 1 man show, the owner was taking orders and making our rolls in between 3 parties coming after us, we did not wait long and he was very efficient overall and super friendly. I was excited to find a poke place within walking distance from my work! The overall bowl was decent. You get to pick your protein, toppings, base, and sauce. The protein (scallop and salmon) that I ordered was really fresh and tasty! I have no complaints on the poke bowl except for the price. For a bowl with 2 proteins, it was $12!! Two proteins for $12 is fine if they gave more than a few bites and more toppings! Otherwise, I felt like the bowl was way too small for what I paid for! I probably have given only one 1 star review in my life and that was for a place I got food poisoning. I have only tried the poke bowl here but my if you're gonna try serving food to bring customers, at least make it decent...! I once said that you couldn't possibly mess up Poke. As long as you have fish and spicy mayo, it at least warrants you 2-3 stars. THE TASTE- horrible. I couldn't even eat half of my bowl because I didn't like it at all and I have never done that before with Poke. It was sour and vinegary in all the wrong ways. I chose "poke sauce" and "spicy mayo". Wow, there was zero flavor in the spicy mayo and I don't know what they consider poke sauce but I've been to Hawaii since I was a kid and all you really need is good shoyu and sesame. Instead I got some vinegar or something disgusting. I even threw out all the "greens" because first off, it was the hard greens like lettuce which is EXTREMELY hard to eat with raw fish (it should be the soft greens like spinach). And second off, the greens were also extremely sour. PORTION- Its alright. Price is cheap but a small won't fill ya up. The bento box my friend got was huge and apparently was worth the price. PRICE- extremely cheap. If the poke was anywhere near decent I would come back. But I would gladly spend $5 extra to have a better bowl somewhere else. SERVICE- They greet you extremely friendly but shrug off your requests.. I asked for extra sauce which they definitely did not do (as pictured). When I asked for it, the cashier mumbled and said "fine we can do it"... but nothing showed up. I don't really blame her but she wasn't clear. They also charged me $1 extra for avocado which is fine but it was not written on the ordering sheet even though some other premium toppings clearly state which is an additional cost.. and avocado was NOT one of them.. also I had a wait of 20 minutes with only 3 people ahead of me... for a bowl that requires no cooking. You walk in and are instantly greeted by the register girl, who is super nice and friendly if you have any questions about the menu, and the chef standing beside her, prepping fish non stop. The one thing that makes me love this place for poke, is the fact that the fish is uncut and made to order with your bowl. For specifics, they have a wide variety of fish that you can choose from and the veggie selection is great as 8 veggies in your bowl (including avocado, no extra charge) is a reason to keep going back to this place. I never get pre-marinated fish such as spicy tuna, so this place is great for the flavor of the fish on it's own. I would recommend the garlic, ponzu, or house poke sauce and you can actually eat it in there or take it to go. A just okay sushi and poke spot in this part of Oakland. As the office is quarantined and we're all working from home, I decided this is a great opportunity to check out some lunch spots in the area I haven't tried. Walking past those I have like Beauty's Bagels and Aburaya, I decided to finally check out Sushi Villa, which has generally been skipped over in favor of better options on the block, and better poke and sushi options in the area. But that really hits the head on this place - it's just okay and there are better options. I'm not saying it's terrible or that you can't get an enjoyable experience here, especially if you work right there or just want something quick. They have a ton of sushi rolls available, some lunch bentos, and vegetarian options, which is nice. Of course there is also the make your own poke, which is probably how the place stands out. Offering a laminated sheet, you pick everything yourself, and there is a lot of options for upgrades you don't see at other poke spots. I decided to go for a 3 protein poke bowl with salmon, hamachi, and crab, topped with a bunch of veggies and for sauces got spicy mayo and the house sauce. DO NOT GET THE HOUSE SAUCE! It's just vinegar. The fish tasted fine, and they did fill up that bowl with everything I requested, especially the daikon. It's only o.k. the roll size is made quite thick with lots of rice and is cut into 6 large pieces. They have the ingredients out in trays, Chipotle style. I've eaten here twice and got food poisoning twice. The seafood is lacking freshness. Sauces are good at least. And they add the smallest amount of avocado ever. Was initially planning to get sushi but when I arrived it turns out that this place also sells poke bowls. I decided to give it a shot since I haven't had one for a while. For my bowl I got scallop and spicy tuna with brown rice, salad and a bunch of other things. Unfortunately I was slightly disappointed. At first the presentation was quite appealing. However, when you get to the bottom of the bowl, the rice is soaked in all the sauces, so it's not exactly an appealing meal once you get to the bottom. I so wish I could give Sushi Valley a higher rating. Service was super friendly, and the place looked nice and clean (although I was doing take-out). Also, I think the sushi was probably fresh enough to be totally safe, so I had no health concerns. But, every element of the sushi was absolutely flavorless. None of the fish had that rich, buttery texture I look for, and all of it tasted sadly similar. Tuna and salmon should not taste the same! The sushi rice was also gummy and flavorless, as though no vinegar had been added. One of my sushi rolls had tempura shrimp, and I couldn't even find it except for the tails hanging out the sides. I look forward to that crisp but juicy center that tempura shrimp provides to a roll. Where was it?? Sushi Valley also offers poke bowls, and I love poke. There are lots of options for base, fish, toppings, etc. The kind person behind the counter who I assume was one of the owners took a lot of time helping me make my choices, and I really do appreciate it. But, I ended up throwing the poke bowl away after one bite. I've never tasted anything so flavorless. Despite how busy the lunch rush was the lady (only waitress at the time AND working the counter) was able to refill my water 3 times and answer every question I had. The lion King roll was the best I've ever had. They bake this roll instead of deep frying it which allows the warn avocado to lighten up the baked salmon outside. Also, special sauce plays off the salmon (maybe some garlic hints?). Very good I would recommend this roll. Great service great prices and great food. Came here for lunch on a weekday and it was really stuffy inside the restaurant so we sat outside. The lady working was nice to accommodate us and set us up with utensils and soy sauce, plates, etc. I got the Tiger Roll. It was okay. The presentation made the roll look really bland, but was still hoping for it to be more flavorful and fresh. It didn't end up tasting very flavorful at all. Mine didn't have raw fish on it but my coworkers ordered rolls with raw fish and said theirs didn't taste too fresh either. Came here for lunch. There were a few people in front of me and was told it would take about 10 minutes for my bowl. I waited for about 30 minutes as more and more people came in. I heard her tell several other people "10 minutes" when clearly it would take much longer than that. I inquired after waiting for half an hour, and was told "another 10 minutes." Since I had so much time to observe while waiting, I noticed that the cashier takes people's money and order forms and in between orders goes to the back to fill bowls but doesn't wash her hands. She touches the salad lettuce with her bare hands after handling money - GROSS.
