    Spicy Tuna Roll

I came here because of the great reviews and its a place that always seems busy and popular. When I walked in I saw couples, families with kids, etc. I got really excited because it was a weeknight and I thought if a place like this is packed on a weeknight it has to be good. It's a big open restaurant but it has a nice clean vibe and it was perfect space for a date night out. But I'm so sad to note that I wasn't very impressed by the sushi. The fish felt really dry and not very flavorful at all. I got a salmon roll and a spicy tuna and both were underwhelming. The garlic edamame was also too sweet for the taste not the flavor to be expected which bummed me out. Maybe it was just an off night for the restaurant? I'm not sure but I think I'll opt for a different sushi place next time.

My friend and I were in the area, wanted to grab a quick lunch, saw this place tucked in the corner of the strip mall and thought to try. Atmosphere was OK, nothing special, bar in the front, seating in the middle and sushi bar at the end. Alejandro was our server. He was nice, friendly and attentive. We ordered a couple Sapporo and Sushi. We had Uni, Tuna Belly, Salmon, Smelt Eggs, Eel and Yellowtail Nigiri plus a Lunch special Roll Combo A + B. I couldn't put my finger on it, but the sushi was neither bad or good, just was sorta of blah tasting. Maybe blah like the presentation too. Atmosphere: OK. Food: OK. Service: very good.

Service and food are great! We were staying in Carlsbad and came here because someone at work recommended Sushi Lounge.

The service was good. I sat at the bar and Josh had helped me. He was very friendly and very quick and efficient at taking my order. The servers were also good at checking in on me to make sure I was good. Ambience was good. Nice and spacious place that was kept clean. It's a bit dark inside, but not a big deal. I liked how it wasn't very loud and I could spend time reading my book. I had the crispy rice appetizer, which I was surprised was cold. The rice was clearly not fried freshly. I ordered two rolls: happy wife and the Tasmanian. Both excellently made and with good portion size! I would definitely come again, but just would maybe consider trying a different app next time.

Some friends invited me to dine here and they were mortified by how terrible the service was. It took only a few minutes to be sat but 10 for our server to greet us. It was an excellent marker for how our evening was going to be. It took a total of 2 hours and 17 minutes to dine here. While waiting we were watching other tables receiving attentive service from other servers, and we were even able to watch our server (Jose) chat with friends at a table next to us for quite a while. Throughout our people watching, we noticed there were two other tables who also complained to the manager. When he made his round to our table, he offered a free dessert and corrected nothing. We had orders that were forgotten, should be rang in as well as the orders that came incorrectly. Well, I'm sure the manager was overwhelmed. There was nothing happening to correct the situation for anyone, and it ended up being a very long dragged out experience of dissatisfaction. My friends tell me that they've never had such an awful experience. However, I spent enough time there to register more than one. I 100% do not recommend this place while management struggles to maintain a level of service at this establishment.

There's a chill yet elegant vibe to this place so feel free to dress up or be a bit more casual. In the evening, the lights dim and give it a romantic feel. The service was great and the food was DELICIOUS! If you're sober living, no problem! They have really good canned mocktails but trust, they're no ordinary canned drinks. They taste really good!! We ordered: miso soup and chicken gyozas as appetizers and the 5 hand roll set, Emo Brown Roll and blue crab hand roll for the meal. We had some of the sweet and spicy sauce left over from the gyozas and I used it on my spicy tuna roll and it was such a delicious combo! Overall, HIGHLY RECOMMEND! The executive chef Sebastian was also super down to earth and really cool! The Emo Brown Podcast brought us to this location and we will def be back and bring our family and friends to check it out.

The place has a large central bar with a few tables around the periphery as well as a few outside on the sidewalk. The decor is clean and modern and the place has a vibey feel. Not exactly sure how to rate this place. If rating it as a bar primarily that also has decent sushi, I'd give it five stars. If rating it as a sushi bar I'd give it three stars. All of the sushi that I had (nigiri, cut rolls and hand rolls) were good but nothing special. If you're looking for a great sushi experience, this is likely not the place. They have a small selection of Japanese and local craft beers as well as bottled and tap sake. I originally characterized the service as slow and inattentive. But looking at it from the perspective of a bar, it was casual and friendly in the slow way you'd expect for hanging out in a bar and socializing or watching sports.

They had some good options on the kids menu too, my daughter chose the fish and fries and loved it! They made my husband's birthday special by bringing churros with a candle for dessert. It looks like most of the other tables were reserved for reservations. The decor is modern and very clean and chic. They also had a high chair and was accommodating with our baby. Food was incredible and the quality of the fish is evident throughout. We started with the mixed shrimp and vegetable tempura - light crispy batter, really good. The sashimi champaloo came with 12 pieces of sashimi, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and the fish of the day was albacore. For rolls, we got the Luna Lemon, Maru's Sushi Toro, and Hamachi Hiro. The rolls were a good size and I loved how each had a fun twist (but at the same time not TOO crazy with their combinations like some other sushi places). You can tell it was designed with intention and each roll had a nice balance. The Luna Lemon roll was great with spicy tuna inside, salmon outside, and the soy dressing and shallot oil put it over the top. The Maru's Sushi - Toro roll looked so good in the photos so I knew we had to order it. The negitoro was delicious and did not disappoint. The Hamachi Hiro roll was hearty and loved the combination of yellowtail outside the shrimp tempura in the inside. We were blown away by how fast the service is. The staff was friendly and on top of everything, and the food came out REALLY fast. For example, when we ordered an extra roll at the end, it came out in maybe 3 minutes and we were shocked. The sashimi was pretty good, but quality wise the sashimi champloo was definitely superior. -Salmon mango roll ($9.50): This had spicy salmon, mango, and ume furikake. This was quite tasty, and definitely had a kick to it. -Maru Maru roll ($9.50): This had imitation crab meat, shrimp tempura, and avocado. A basic roll but still good. -Chicken katsu curry don ($16.95): This was disappointing because the portion was quite small for the price. I do like how the curry was packaged separately. All in all, Hakumaru has quality sashimi and rolls, but could work on portion size for chicken katsu curry don.
