I've been to sushi rock a handful of times but this is my first review. Wasn't starving this time around so I just got the bulgogi sliders and tempura fried ice cream. Sliders were really tasty- had some sort of aoli sauce that made it. The fried ice cream was pretty standard and nothing too crazy. My sweet tooth seemed satiated so it did the job. Food is a solid 4 stars but service is lacking so knocking them down to a 3. Went here on a Saturday night with a 7 pm reservation. It was pretty crowded but still several open tables. We were seated upstairs, which I didn't love. No atmosphere, very dark with few lights. Next time I would ask to be seated downstairs. We were taken to a table with no utensils, no candle, no soy sauce, etc. even though there were tables that had already been set. This isn't a big deal, just odd. It took our server awhile to come over and then we didn't see him much throughout the night. We had to remind him about the salad we ordered because it wasn't brought out with the rest of the meal. We also had to continually ask for more water as he didn't get the hint that we needed refills from our empty glasses. He was also really confused when I asked for soy sauce, as if it should have been on the table... Although I wasn't impressed with the service I was really happy with our meal! Between 2 of us we shared the steamed dumplings (pretty good, next time I'd try them fried), house salad (the ginger vinaigrette is amazing and this is a big salad), and 3 rolls. You Shook Me All Night Long is a MUST. It was delicious. Deep fried California roll was also great and a fun twist on the original Cali roll. This spot was really good. Went with some friends and we had a great time. Tried to make a reservation online but since there was no availability we were able to just walk in and get a table. We ordered the Free Fallin and the Light My Fire. Both were very yum! Friends also liked the chicken fried rice, spicy crunchy shrimp and salmon nigiri. Sushi rock was giving out a $25 gift card on Instagram the other day, and I am very happy I saw that promotion! The setting is very unique. It has a rock n roll feel to it, and the music was awesome. Their name and atmosphere makes this sushi place stand out from all the other sushi places in the area. My husband and I ordered plenty of classic sushi (it is on my picture receipt) and their bulgogi sliders. Their bulgogi sliders are out of this world. They were fresh, hot, and flavorful. We loved it, and it is perfect as an appetizer because of how tiny they are. When we go there again we are definitely going to order the bulgogi sliders again! We loved all the sushi we got too. I am giving 5 stars because of the gift card :) and our over all experience. However one aspect that can be improved on is service. It wasn't bad, but could be a tad bit faster. Another great sushi place in the DMV! I have been here several times, usually with a group of friends for happy hour but also with another friend to get food using a Groupon (which excludes the happy hour and drink specials). For happy hour, many drinks are a few dollars off including a small sake for only $3 and a wonderful array of several beers for only $4 a draft. The Crispy Rice and Spicy Tuna is something very unique here that we share and is on special during happy hour. Happy Hour is also seven days a week both early evening until 7:30 and late night. Another great item are the Wonton Nachos, which I'm not sure are on happy hour but are great to share as they are a large appetizer with black olives, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream, and jalapeños on top of crispy wontons. There is a also the option of adding guacamole, chicken, or beef for a few more dollars. I could take the Wonton Nachos any day over the tortilla nachos that have become ubiquitous across America. Finally, there are some very unique sushi rolls on the menu that are worth trying. One of my favorites is the Tiger Roll which is about dozen very large pieces of salmon, yellowtail, asparagus, and avocado wrapped with rice and soy paper. I have both dined in and gotten takeout a handful of times from Sushi Rock. I wish I liked this place a little better, because I love sushi and Japanese food in general and this is the closest spot to me. It's definitely not a high quality sushi place - there are some days when my spicy tuna rolls barely have any tuna in them and there are some days when the rice is ...wet, mushy, and just not good. It does seem like the quality of the food when dining in is better than the quality you get when ordering to go, and I find that the quality of the nigiri is better than the maki rolls. So why do I go back? Because it's closeby and sometimes I need a fix, even if it's mediocre. read more

Sushi Rock is a decent place to get sushi rolls! It's not the best quality of sushi but I think it's one of the best ones to go here. The service is good and I like the interior of the restaurant! Their happy hour specials are really good so I go there with my coworkers a lot. They have signature cocktails, beers, and sake. Try their apple sake if you like sake. It's sweet but so good! I also really like their "you shook me all night long" specialty roll. It has shrimp tempura in it so if you like shrimp, def recommend you trying it out. For those who follow my reviews, you know about my never ending search to find good sushi in Arlington. There has been more than a few horror stories but I am finally happy to report that I finally have a success story! Sushi Rock has been around for two years but I never checked it out because the concept seemed cheesy to me. But after seeing an article about the new ownership and menu I decided to give it a try. And thank goodness I did because my taste buds were rocking and rolling all night. Ambiance: On the TLC tip, it is crazy/sexy/cool. The rock and roll theme is subtle and not cheesy at all. This is a wonderful place for happy hours or a special birthday dinner. Service: Friendly and helpful they were able to suggest their personal favorites which were all a winner in my book. The Food: They broke my wasabi virginity. My whole life, I've been consuming paste like tube wasabi like a n00b. Sushi Rock offers freshly grated wasabi for those who would like to partake in the spicy fun. The difference in taste and texture is amazing -- I'll never go back to the fake stuff again! Forgive me doctor, for I have pigged out. I ordered the beef tataki, you shook me all night long roll, light my fire roll, stairway to heaven roll, pork belly buns and a chef selected nigiri set. The pork belly was slightly caramelized and served with a hoisin, siracha, and pickled cucumber blend. The bun stuck out to me because it was not too doughy like ones I've had in the past. Apparently they ship them in fresh daily from a shop in Chinatown. All of the rolls were good, but the light my fire which is made with crunchy shrimp, spicy tuna, avocado, spicy ailoi, eel bbq sauce and then torched with a flame was by far my favorite. The flavors melted together perfectly and had me singing "Is this real life? Or is this just fantasy?". It was that good, I'll tell ya! The nigiri was also VERY fresh. I have a strong gag reflex so I can tell immediately if fish is not good but I ate every piece with gutso. The drinks: Five stars just for having beer lao on the menu. I also sampled a red rice ale which was wonderfully hoppy and unique tasting. In the cocktail department, I tried the Day tripper which had a coconut foam on top. Since I still live in 2010, and enjoy all things foam, I thought it was delicious. The extras: I like the Lindsay Lohan esque headbands that the sushi chef wears. I've always tried to pull it off in my personal life and never could do it. He pulls it off wonderfully. To summarize, I am SUPER psyched about finding a new restaurant that both me and my boyfriend can agree on. We spent the whole car ride home planning our next trip over there. Definitely a fan of Sushi Rock-- if you're looking for good-sized specialty sushi rolls, this is a great place to give a try. The decor has a cute rock n' roll theme, and the outdoor patio + location near Courthouse can't be beat. When we arrived, they tried to seat us at a table that wasn't yet cleaned off before switching us to another table; overall not a huge issue, and service was good the rest of the time especially considering how indecisive we were about what to order. The drink I ordered is called the Day Tripper, and if you're like me and love love love fruity drinks + coconut, this is the cocktail for you! Warning: drink prices are a bit steep, but I'll definitely be taking a detour to stop back in for happy hour ($5 off) at some point. We ordered the Volcano and Roasted Veggie rolls. While I was really pleased with the Volcano roll (massive, and super flavorful!), the Roasted Veggie roll was a bit of a let-down. I absolutely love Sushi Rock! I go at least once a week (okay oftentimes more than just once) and I am always impressed with both the food and the attentive staff. The food is consistently great and despite a full house the kitchen gets food out quickly and efficiently. The wait staff is very quick with refills and great suggestions. The atmosphere is also very fun, as it is rock-themed with guitars and edgy decor and alternative rock hits playing for music. I always get the sashimi plate because the fish is fresh and delicious and the cuts of fish are generous. Don't miss out on the uni (sea urchin), as this is one of my favorite places to get it! So fresh and flavorful! The soft shell crab roll is another of my favorites. So so good. The hot items from the kitchen are also excellent, especially the chicken katsu. Also, they have great drink specials throughout the week. On Tuesday's (and Wed, I think) they have $20 off bottles of wine (most of the wines are $45 and under) so basically half off wine. I was looking for a new sushi place in my DC area travels and happened upon Sushi Rock, and it has definitely been added to my Favorites. I don't usually get Edame since it's never flavored well, but since I was getting the Classic Ramen, I opted for Edame over Miso this time around. It was perfectly salted and seasoned to where I almost wanted to ask for the recipe they use. Next up was my Classic Ramen which was fully flavored and thick with noodles and pork. Again no complaints about this entrée... And for my sushi rolls I chose Salmon Lover (Salmon+Strawberries+Avocado+Mango Sauce *side-dipping) which was quite flavorful and I will definitely try again. For my second roll I chose Proud Mary Crab Roll (Salmon+Avocado+Crab Meat+Old Bay Onion Tempura), which I was not a huge fan of, mostly because of the Old Bay aftertaste I got from it. While Old Bay is a good seasoning to use on Crab, and in some seafood, one can know when too much is too much. I sorta choked my way through it, washing down the aftertaste with my water or Kirkin. I will try something different next time as they have a decent selection of sushi rolls on the menu. I ended up with leftovers and finished the Salmon Lover that evening, and again tried the Proud Mary to my unfortunately agreement that to much Old Bay ruined it for me. But I highly recommend you try the Volcano and dragon rolls. Its super yummy. And if you really want something great, then you MUST try the Wonton Nachos!!! Okay I know what you are thinking. "Really come here for nachos?!" YASSSS!!! These are not your normal nachos. Trust me. They may be one of the best nacho inspired dishes I have ever had. Go ahead and try them. Goodness gracious, Great Balls of Fire! we had an exceptional lunch experience here both in terms of the food and the customer service. For 2 adults and 2 kids we ordered three sushi lunch specials, a side of veggie fried rice, tater tots, and a Philadelphia roll. The bounteous-ness of that order was more than we could handle. The specialty sushi rolls are incredibly large, and full of buttery fresh fish. This was our first time at this restaurant, so we didn't know beforehand how much food that would be! Ironically, the most popular item was maybe the simplest: tater tots. These are no ordinary tater tots, they came out perfectly crisp on the outside, and a sprinkle of some kind of Japanese seasoning on top. The seasoning give it a tiny bit of spice that we all appreciated. Another standout was the Philadelphia roll. That smoked salmon was quality and thickly sliced, which i prefer. Great proportion of salmon to cream cheese as well. I'd get that again in a heart beat. We really liked the Crunch Dragon specialty roll (menu reads: "shrimp tempura, avocado inside / spicy tuna, jalapeno, beet crunch on top"), but it was HUGE! A two-bite kind of deal for each piece. I have no idea what the "beet crunch" on top is, but it's purple, fried, tastes mildly like beets, and is a colorful, crunchy addition to the roll. Customer service-wise, it did take longer than 15 min for our rolls to come out, do thru comped us some edamame. We were having good conversation and the world's best tater tots while we waited, so it was fine. But nice of them to honor our time. They were also great about giving kids crayons, chopstick helpers, and a TON of extra ginger, which my boys eat like candy. I'll visit here again for sure. read more

Super disappointed in how far down hill this place has gone. I ignored a couple bad experiences in a row but it has now get ten to the point that even the simplest of rolls are inedible. Specialty rolls are drowning in sauce (in a bad way), basic rolls have dry and crunchy rice, and the value is awful--it's significantly more expensive than other sushi joints nearby that are better. Hope they can turn it around because this used to be a go to date spot. For now, I recommend checking out other spots. read more

My hubby and a few of his friends myself and my sister came to eat here late at night. So we had a a pretty big party. The wait was a bit long. The service was great! The server was personable and friendly. He was quick and knew how to engage his customers. The waiter served us complimentary appetizers. Most likely because we ordered a lot of food. Their dumplings and pork buns is a perfect way to start the meal. The pork buns are served with soft buns. The pork itself is meaty and fatty. The fat from the pork makes the meat juicy and tender. However, I have had way better pork buns before. Their udon is one dish I would not suggest. The udon came with too much sesame oil in the broth. I felt like the sesame oil over powered and dominated the dish. I could not taste any flavors beyond the sesame oil. The noddles were definitely not hand pulled and I could tell their noodles were the kind you buy at a supermarket. I love udon with a bouncy bite and smooth texture. I felt what the udon noodle that this restaurant served was not as bouncy as I would like. Their sushi is very Americanized. My friends and I had a great experience here! Both the food and the service we received was top notch, I would definitely come back again. We sat outside on the front patio which was very relaxing. It wasn't too loud but we were still able to hear the music coming from inside. Our waitress, melody, was very nice and attentive, and she answered all of our questions and gave us great recommendations! We started our meal off with a sake bomb (recommended by our waitress), and I loved the whole experience of it! Another employee of the restaurant, Guni, brought them out to us and walked us through the whole process. So fun! In addition to the sake bombs we also ordered a dr. Feel good and a white rabbit, which was very refreshing and tasty. I was a little skeptical of the black pepper in the drink but it added a nice interest. The dr feel good was my favorite. It was fruity, sweet, and all around delicious! As for food, we started off with ceviche, pork buns, and fried dumplings. Everything was delicious, but my favorite was probably the dumplings. Good (but expensive) fusion-style sushi and Asian food. It took me a few tries to figure this place out. On my initial visits I ordered traditional maki rolls, and while those are good, they aren't what this place does best. The non-traditional, fusion-style parts of the menu are where Sushi Rock really shines. At most places I prefer simpler, traditional maki rolls to the fancier, chef's special-type rolls, but at Sushi Rock, that preference is flipped. My favorite special rolls are the You Shook Me All Night Long and Ziggy Stardust rolls, both excellent. YSMANL is rich, luscious and utterly delicious, one I'd happily order on every visit. Ziggy Stardust is one of the most non-traditional choices, featuring tender kobe beef, roasted red peppers and asparagus. It's great on it's own, and when dipped in the accompanying wasabi cream sauce, it's amazing! It's also something you won't see most other places, so points for uniqueness. I also enjoy the Stairway to Heaven, which starts with traditional ingredients, but adds cilantro and jalapeno for brightness and extra complexity, and the Light My Fire, which is another rich roll with just enough heat from the thinly sliced jalapenos. For starters, I've enjoyed the tempura shrimp, kobe beef dumplings, and pork shumai, all good. Sushi Rock is more expensive than other local sushi spots: traditional maki rolls run $8-10, chef's special rolls are generally $16-17, etc. Each item seems to be a few dollars more than it might be elsewhere, and a meal of two special rolls, starter and drink can easily run $50 or more.
