4.75/5 Great service and high quality fish. A mistake was made on one roll (a small piece of Saran wrap left behind) so they comped it, fixed it, AND gave us an additional special nigiri for free. I have been looking for a nice but casual sushi spot since moving to DC since there's no sugar fish here and this place fits the bill! I will be back. I wish it was bigger and in a more happening area

Sweet potato maki roll and toro negi maki roll

One of the best sushi spots I've been to in DC! Outstanding selection of rolls. I highly recommend the Kevin Bacon. The applewood bacon pairs really well with the shrimp tempura. We sat at the bar and it made the meal an experience. It was a ton of fun watching the chefs behind the sushi bar. Perfect for a date night. Small selection of wines, but large selection of sake!

Beef (Gyuniku) Bento

We arrived on a Wednesday at a quarter to noon. We beat the lunch rush and were able to be seated right away. For my family of four, we ordered three lunch specials. I am glad we did not order a fourth because they were massive lunch portions. We ordered the beef bento, the sushi teishoku set, and the 2 specialty roll + 1 regular roll combo. Each lunch special came with miso soup and greens with sesame dressing. The food: Beef (Gyu Niku) - our original intention for coming to this restaurant was not for beef, but I thought this was super flavorful and very tender. It was my favorite part of the meal. Nigiri - I only tried a few of these, but the ones I had were well made. Rolls - we got the Rainbow Roll, Caterpillar Roll, Yellowtail Roll. California Roll and Spicy Salmon Roll came in two of the other lunch combos. Everything tasted pretty good with good quality fish. One small complaint was the rolls were formed a bit oddly so everything but the Spicy Salmon and California were on the verge of falling apart. Tempura - I thought the shrimp tempura was very good and crispy. I was a little underwhelmed by the other veggies - the batter wasn't as crispy and the temperature of the food was cooler. For the bento, the tempura sauce is put in a very shallow tray, making it quite challenging to dip. Overall, a solid place for sushi. Large portions. Surprised myself finding a fantastic beef dish when we were going in for mainly sushi.

Surprised to have stumbled in this little spot near Kim's Tailoring in DC. They had this nicely presentable set of handrolls which were tasty tasty but messy to eat and the mechanism to separate the seaweed from the plastic was not easy to do. Id say that difficulty takes away from the experience. Other than that, highly recommended!

5 Set HANDROLL

It's actually a 3.5/5. Came here for my birthday celebration and ordered a bunch of items to share. The seared salmon belly appetizer was phenomenal, probably my favorite bite of the day. Sushi and roll combo was decent. Good cuts, maybe a little too much rice. The 5 hand roll combo was pretty good. Our favorite was the scallop. One issue was that it's difficult to eat the rolls neatly as they're in a taco shape as opposed to the more familiar cone shape for hand rolls. The Pete's Sake roll is huge but there's nothing about it that really stands out. Wouldn't recommend. Ambiance was cozy, it's a good date spot. Overall it's probably worth checking out if you're in the area or super close.

Wow this place exceeded my expectations. My friend and I split the sushi tacos and they were so good and fresh!

Salad that came with lunch sashimi platter

I came in without a reservation for lunch and was quickly seated! I shared I knew what I wanted since I was in a rush and they took my order right away. The food came quickly, first the salad then the sashimi set. It was FILLING. A lot of food for $31- absolutely worth it. I ate at the bar and was able to have my computer out so I appreciated that. I think there was seating upstairs too! Such a great space. The fish was very fresh. I parked right outside but I recommend taking the metro if you come at night!

Classic rolls

This was a quality sushi spot in the city! The classic rolls were well made, the service was well paced, and the decor felt true to the Japanese ambience. I would suggest making reservations ahead of time as the seating does fill quickly. Be prepared to fit at a bar top during your reservation rather than a table. We had no issues with it, but it's good to know.

Sushi & Sashimi & Sushi Combo

My family and I had another great lunch here. Our party of 4 adults and 3 babies ate until we couldn't. We had 2 special maki rolls for the mothers that are avoiding raw fish. We also had a sushi + sashimi combo, a beef don, a nigiri dinner set, and some appetizers (gyoza, tempura, and yakitori). The nigiri sushi and the sashimi were super fresh and tasty! The wagyu+uni was out of this world. The appetizers were mostly for the babies. They loved them! The portion on the beef don was incredible. I'm pretty sure it can feed 2 adults! The atmosphere was awesome and the experience was great as usual! We will keep on coming back!

Obsessed with this place! My boyfriend took me here for my birthday dinner. Little did he know, it was a restaurant I had bookmarked for a while, so it was a lovely surprise getting to actually go. Everyone here is really kind and it just made the experience even better. When you are seated, you are given a hand wipe to cleanse your hands before you begin the dining experience. We then chose a cocktail which in all honesty I was a little bit lukewarm about, but the real selling point of this restaurant is obviously its stellar quality and fish. We tried one of their preset hand roll options; everything was really fresh and delicious. We also tried their sashimi nori which was a heavenly box of all the best cuts. Would 11/10 order again. When it comes to ambiance, the place is homey and there isn't much spacing between tables, which was a slight downside since you can really hear your neighbors speaking.

Crab Calamari and yellowtail roll

Ordered takeout and the crab calimari roll was so good. Not a traditional sushi roll but extremely tasty! The yellowtail was also very good, very fresh and filling!

Some of the best sushi I have had in DC!! Service was welcoming and friendly. The food came out quick and was all delicious. From the miso soup to the nigiri collection, I would order it all again and then some. To note, their lunch specials are only on the weekdays Umai Nori, you will see me again!!

Ask the Community - Umai Nori

Is there parking garage near you?

Yes, there's a garage next door to the restaurant!

Are the handrolls served one at a time if you sit at the sushi bar or do you always get the whole set at once?

We try to serve at the same time, but we can serve one at a time at your request.

I think there are three types of sushi you can get in the DC area: 1.) the type you get at Whole…read moreFoods or a gas station, 2.) the very large category that includes both a.) sushi boat extravaganzas made efficiently and economically to meet corporate expectations, to b.) maybe even family owned joints that make authentic, solid fare and a heart warming tempura or soba; and 3.) unique sushi that is made by an artist or actual craftsman. This is definitely in the third category, so don't go expecting 1 or 2. This is the "real thing," and you are lucky in DC to actually experience it (typically you'd have to go to NY or LA to get it in the US). This place is fantastic. PS, the chef's wife makes amazing pastry, too. ;)

Welcome to Georgetown, Chef Ota and Sushi Gaku!…read more Fun fact: Chef Ota is one of the only chefs in the area to hole a fugu preparation license! Making a dinner reservation on their online platform was a breeze and seamless. Try their Okimari Prix Fixe, as it comes with miso soup, a choice of a sashimi carpaccio, 10 pieces of premium nigiri, a choice of maki, and ice cream. There is also Gakyu Omakase specialties, where one is a sushi course and one is a fugu course (that is seasonal). They also have Signature Sushi Sets, in which the Edo Style Nigiri and the Gaku Sushi Assortment are recommended! We enjoyed the Chef's Langoustine Lobster roll and the Chef's Crunchy Spicy Tuna roll, several nigiris (Aburi-style), and the sushi sets. Other options include various soups, apps, and a la carte items. Service was kind, friendly, and attentive. Look for the Sushi Gaku sign/plaque, and go downstairs. The space is bright and clean, and I liked the 'sparkly' fabrics they used for the furniture. Metered street parking can be found in the area. +omakase +sushi sets +online reservations available

If you love old & new R&B this is the place to be on Thursday & Sunday nights. My only complaint is that the music is so loud it's hard to have a conversation or even place your order. We had to ask our waitress multiple times for limes, soy sauce and a to go box. I don't blame her for being overwhelmed since the music was so loud but there is room for improvement! Sebastian Roll: 10/10 fried crab roll was delicious. This is my new go to roll! Buenos Aires Roll: 7/10 nothing crazy. Reminded me of an elevated California roll with torched salmon on top. Vegetable Gyoza: 7/10 pan fried instead of boiled which I prefer! Kind of bland. Would be better with a different sauce or added protein. Calamari: 7/10 good but it did not stand out. Comes with both rings & tentacles. We don't like tentacles so we ate around them.

This place feels like it tried to be a hit in the 90s and failed. The sushi just isn't that good,…read morethe whole menu is white washed mid sushi at high prices. The ceviches and crudos and such are all fine, but they're not good. It makes it hard to want to enjoy them at all. Service is nice and friendly, but understaffed. Everything took incredibly long. Why are they understaffing this place?!? Especially at the prices. The cocktails are actually pretty good, though the wine list is uninteresting. It's a fine spot if you're looking for a quick meal in Georgetown, but it's not a destination spot by any means.
