The only slight disappointment was the updated food menu.. loved the Spicy Thai Chicken, Veggie rolls, and coconut shrimp in years past.. sad to see them go.

The case had gone cold--or perhaps mezcal-hot--until we received a clue pointing us toward River North. Ghost Donkey is spacious, colorful, and full of energy, with plenty of bar seating and tables. The music can get loud, but it fits the atmosphere perfectly. The bartenders were constantly interacting with guests, swinging the lights, encouraging the crowd, and turning the entire room into a neon-lit fiesta. They do have a food menu featuring items such as tacos, nachos, quesadillas, and guacamole, but we mostly came for the drinks. Many of the cocktails are tequila- or mezcal-based, which is exactly what we enjoy. The menu is creative, the drinks are strong, and the bar does an excellent job making agave spirits approachable--even for guests who may not consider themselves mezcal experts. After two drinks and an argument with a decorative donkey, we finally found the missing spirit hiding behind the bar. He was translucent, smelled faintly of roasted agave, and appeared to be carrying a tiny map. We followed him through a glowing hallway, down a staircase, and into a secret chamber where he revealed the legendary piñata of Quetzalcoatl, the ancient feathered serpent god. Naturally, we attempted to break it open. Instead of candy, it released a cloud of mystical dust, three lime wedges, and a receipt for nachos. The ghost donkey brayed with laughter, the lights began swinging, and the entire bar erupted in applause. The bartender handed us another drink and told us this happened all the time. Ghost Donkey is a fantastic place to hang out, pregame, and enjoy inventive tequila and mezcal cocktails in a lively setting. Just be warned: you may arrive looking for a ghost donkey and leave having helped recover an ancient Mexican god's piñata. That's simply the sort of evening this place encourages.

They don't normally serve food but I think are fine with customers bringing in your own food, and you can also place an order from a nearby restaurant (I don't recall which one). And yes, it's cash only so bring some money if you don't want to pay ATM fees! 4 out of 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact. I like bars that allow customers to bring (or order) their own food - it allows for all diets! The one thing I'd like to see is more beer on tap - even just one good rotating local beer (e.g., Goose Island). Draft beer has smaller environmental footprints compared to bottled or canned.

He was friendly and highly attentive. Loved that our food and drinks also came out in a timely manner. I enjoyed everything I ate. I had a few bites of the appetizers including the scallops, fried paneer, and 2 kinds of empanadas (corn and chicken). We also got lumpia and a mixed bread platter for the table. Though I didn't have any of the latter, they were a hit at our table. I got the burger as my entree, and it was such a redemption from a crappy burger I got elsewhere earlier in my trip. It's loud (in the best way), stylish, and full of energy, blending hip-hop beats with Japanese culinary precision. If you're looking for a place that's cool without trying too hard, this is it. We were seated quickly despite the buzz of a busy Friday night, thanks to a reservation (highly recommend booking ahead). The staff was upbeat, attentive, and genuinely enthusiastic about the food--something that always adds to the experience. To start, we ordered the crispy rice with spicy tuna, and it was an instant hit. The rice was perfectly crisp on the bottom, warm and slightly sticky on top, with the tuna packed full of flavor and a kick of heat. From there, we moved to nigiri--each piece served simply, expertly crafted, and incredibly fresh. The otoro (fatty tuna) and Hokkaido scallop were standouts: buttery, clean, and melt-in-your-mouth good. One of the highlights was the San-Set, a chef's choice selection of sushi and nigiri that felt like a curated experience. Each bite built on the last, with just the right pacing. We also tried the hand rolls, made to order and delivered right away so the nori stayed crisp. The blue crab hand roll was a personal favorite. To drink, we tried a sake flight that the server recommended--each pour came with a brief explanation, and it really added to the experience. Sushi-San is a great spot for smaller sushi bites and shareable appetizers. We ordered a good spread and most dishes stood out. Service was a bit hit or miss since the place was packed when we got there but even once things started clearing up, our server seemed to disappear at times. We started with the crispy brussels sprouts which came out tasting a little more burnt than caramelized, and they weren't nearly as crispy as I expected. The Japanese Eggplant Tempura made up for it though, the batter had that perfect crispy shatter on the outside while the eggplant inside stayed soft and almost custardy. From the rolls, the Crunchy Fatty Tuna hand roll was a standout. It had a satisfying crunch that I'd recommend if you're a fan of otoro-style cuts. The Spicy Scallop Maki was right up there with it too. The Spicy Salmon Maki was just fine. Nothing bad, but nothing that really made it memorable. The Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice was solid overall, good flavor, though I wished the rice base had more crunch and crispiness to it. The King Trumpet Mushroom arrived lukewarm and tough and almost difficult to chew through so I thought that was okay. The Sticky Miso Caramel Cake was rich and gooey, genuinely one of the best desserts I've had. If you go to Sushi-San, do not skip this. It alone is worth saving room for. read more

Sushi-San in downtown Chicago was a mixed experience for me. I ordered the Mega Set, which came with a variety of sushi, sashimi, and rolls. The fish tasted fresh, and the presentation was clean and polished. I also had an Asahi Super Dry while waiting, and honestly, the cold beer helped cool me down and made the wait a little easier. That said, it took about 25 minutes for my sushi to arrive. The restaurant was not even that busy when I first walked in, and I kept seeing other people get their dishes while mine still had not arrived at the table. For an $87 Mega Set, plus surcharge and tax bringing it to about $100 before tip, I expected the experience to feel smoother and more attentive. I can see why people come here, especially because the happy hour items are very cheap and probably help attract a crowd. But for the regular menu price, I felt the value was not quite there. The food was fresh, but it was pricey, and the wait took away from the experience. Overall, Sushi-San has a modern downtown Chicago vibe, fresh fish, and attractive happy hour pricing. But based on my visit and what I ordered, this was a 3-star experience for me, and I probably would not come back. read more

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. The service we received at the bar was beyond terrible, thanks to a bartender who introduced himself as George--only for us to later find out his real name is Francis. That should have been our first red flag, but unfortunately, it only got worse from there. From the moment we sat down, he paid zero attention to us. We had to wave him down multiple times just to order drinks, and when he finally acknowledged us, he acted like he was doing us a favor. No check-ins, no refills, no basic hospitality--just pure indifference. But the worst part? He scammed us. One of his friends at the bar insisted on buying us a round of shots, which we thought was a nice gesture--until we got the bill and realized Francis had charged the shots to our tab instead. When we confronted him, he brushed it off like it was no big deal. Excuse me? You made us pay for drinks your friend said were on him? Absolutely unacceptable. This bartender is not only inattentive but also dishonest. This is the first sushi restaurant I have ever been to that didn't serve imitation crab meat on the menu, and solely focused on providing fresh fish and ingredients. The menu and serving style is catered to providing you with the ultimate food tasting experience - which may be unorthodox but D@MN does it work! Order and it comes out when it's ready - no heating hoods, no sitting in a window, no sitting on a sushi bar turning room temp. We had: beef lettuce wraps, crazy shrimp tempura, umami scallop aburi (so good), tuna cheek topped with uni, Japanese snapper topped with caviar, zuke salmon, octopus, tuna akami, Japanese pancakes, and chocolate cherry mochi. The fish melts in your mouth, the service is quick, the booths are divided to provide a safe eating atmosphere, and the sake hit the spot! Maybe it was just a bad day but it was frustrating to read. I definitely felt like it was more of a hipster place for millenials than for a dinosaur of my age and experience but in the end, lunch was served quickly and the sushi was decent. Alex, who is perpetually stationed at the front and is allegedly the manager (God help us). consistently misses the mark on basic hospitality and professional courtesy. When we politely request to be seated with our preferred servers whom we've known for years, Alex routinely assigns us elsewhere without a word of explanation or common-sense acknowledgment. It costs nothing to say, "Welcome back, I know your favorites are busy tonight," or even just a "Hi" or to offer a simple professional courtesy. Instead, loyal patrons who spend heavily here week after week are met with a dismissive attitude and zero explanation. As the first point of contact, the host sets the tone for the entire experience. If the food and our actual servers weren't phenomenal, we simply wouldn't bother coming back. Time to train the front-end staff on what loyalty and basic customer service actually look like. However, you all, the honey walnut shrimp is no joke! Try it! I would give this easily five stars or more but the attitude has got to be changed or gone after nearly two years of putting up with it.
