Beautiful location across from Grand Park. I was surprised to be the only one here. Though several came in after I was there a bit and were clearly happy return custumers! The menu is so unique! Really neat integrations! I asked which uni dish has the most uni and my sweet server Sunny brought the chef out who warmly recommended the uni handroll or the Uni Scallop Carpaccio appetizer so I went with the app. It was very unique and interesting although I ended up deconstructing it and eating the uni on its own, because the lemon zest and scallop were distracting from my love of pure uni. The pieces are still great. Next time I'd order an uni handroll or uni toro rice bowl to try. I also ordered miso soup and Tako Wasa. The miso was great. They were unfortunately out of the tako wasa but the raw octopus in fresh wasabi certainly sounded delicious! I moved on with the oshinko handroll and negi toro handroll. Both were good and plentiful. I would have loved a bit more fattiness to the toro but it was very fresh. I enjoyed ending my meal with partners Kyoto Dream, coffee flavored. This is amazing! Came here on a Sunday evening, and there was no line or wait. Was staying at the Hilton, and this spot is right next door basically. I immediately was seated (counter seating only). There was only one server/host and one person making hand rolls that night, but it was fairly empty so service was friendly and quick. I ordered 4 hand rolls and ended the night with a miso soup. I didn't think I'd get full off 4 hand rolls, but I think they are filled with a lot of fish, so I definitely left stuffed. I had the spicy salmon, yellowtail, Japanese scallop, and ended with uni (which was topped with caviar). The flavors were all good and fish tasted fresh. But the uni was my fave. SO much uni and so creamy and delicious. Only thing I'll mention is the menu doesn't say what each hand roll comes with (aka toppings, sauce) so if you have any allergies, tell your server just in case! They make the hand rolls one at a time for you like Kazu Nori in LA or Saru in SF. Then they serve it in front of you like an omakase experience. Everything was delicious, and I'd definitely come back next time I'm visiting Chicago. They give you good wasabi, the kind with chunky pieces! Prices were fair (especially compared to SF). read more

It is like one long hallway with a countertop. Looks nice on the inside. The thing is, it really depends on who is seated in the restaurant. Absolutely incredible experience and made for one of the best meals I had in Chicago. Ordered the five hand roll set and was served by Kevin, who was very friendly and accommodating for our visit. Stand outs include the salmon hand roll which tasted so fresh that it felt like they cut the fish right in front of me, and the true star of the show, the yellowtail hand roll. Convenient location on Michigan Ave nearing South Loop, been there a couple of times now. Service is great, staff is always very friendly and attentive. Fish quality though has not been consistent, hence the 3 stars. We've tried salmon, tuna, toro, unagi, yellowtail, Japanese scallop, wagyu. Salmon was fresh both times but the other raw selections had been hit and miss. The chicken karaage was decent and the match tiramisu was delicious! Inside seating is limited, very zen decors and ambiance. I'd still go back especially if I'm craving for some quick handrolls, but will probably just stick to salmon. read more

Great sushi spot in the South Loop! So glad we have this place nearby whenever we're craving sushi. The fish was super fresh and definitely did not disappoint. Came here on a weekday and was able to walk in easily. The interior is pretty nice and the sushi bar seating is comfortable and swanky looking. They have a set menu for their 'hand rolls' which I think they describe as equivalent to a maki roll so they're supposed to on the larger side. You can make some minor substitutions like a double of something in the set but can't bring in other varieties outside of the set. We got the 4 set and opted to swap the California with another Scallop. The price at $36.95 feels a bit high though for the variety. I thought the fish and how it was prepared was overall pretty good. My favorite being the spicy tuna and how it was prepared with crispy onions. The scallop are the baby bay scallops which was just Ok along with the salmon. I wish I swapped for 2 of the spicy tunas instead! I like the wasabi they use too - doesn't have that huge punch like the paste but it tastes better to me. We were still a little hungry after the meal so I would say overall the meal was OK to try. read more

We've visited Roll-Up several times now, tucked away in a quiet corner of the Magnificent Mile, close to the South Loop. The ambiance is minimalist and serene, with seating for around 20 to 25 people. While it can get busy on Saturday nights, we usually go mid-day for a relaxed lunch, and there's rarely a wait. The hand-rolled sushi is some of the freshest we've ever had. I always get the three-piece hand roll combo and add a crab roll. The service is attentive, and while they do have a small alcohol selection, like Asahi beer, the focus is really on the food. If you go, keep in mind the drinks might be limited, but the appetizers are a must. We love the shishito peppers, and the wagyu hand roll is a splurge but totally worth it--24-karat gold plating, served warm, and so rich. Definitely a unique bite to end round of the evening. read more

Popped in here because we were attending a conference at the Hilton and to be honest, the food wasn't very good. My colleague didn't eat that lunch so I took him for a walk to show what was around so he could get a bite to eat. New spot (relatively), and really well done. It's a long bar, they serve mostly hand rolls and other items here. Summer greeted us and sat us down. Since I had eaten, I went with a cucumber salad and a Diet Coke. It's beautifully decorated, welcoming to people, and set up so you can literally keep ordering if you need to. My cucumber salad had a creamy sesame flavor, which is different than the vinegary dressing I'm used to. Still enjoyable and the cucumbers were beautifully peeled and cut into pieces that made it manageable to eat without making a mess. The nori on the hand rolls was toasted and you could hear the crunch as my colleague ate. Caesar was making them, and he was happy to keep making more as my colleague ate like 4. Summer was friendly and professional. Kind of neat to talk with them about what they have seen since this place opened late in 2025. I think they'll do well in the summer when foot traffic is insane in the South Loop (I lived in Museum Park for 12 years). Support small businesses! Mid at best hand rolls. Small but fairly mid. Went for dinner on a Saturday night at seven and we are the only party in the entire restaurant the entire time not a great look. The Mesa soup was really good. The french fries were eh - the hand rolls were just OK very flavor less. The unagi rice bowl was lucky in flavor greatly. I really love the concept -- call it KISS (Keep it Simple, Sam) Sushi. No ten page menus. No special rolls covered in random goop. Just pure hosomaki (single sliver of fish tight wrapped in rice) with a few sides for your aged relatives that refuse to eat 'raw fish'. Execution has been spot on every time we have gone. The fish is delicious and fresh, the rolls are tightly wrapped, and it is packed in creative custom takeout boxes that exude a certain niche cool. The rolls are surprisingly filling, so you don't need a lot for a great meal. My only knock on the place are the prices, which I don't feel is competitive to most other sushi places in the area. Fortunately, they run promotions from time to time, which is when I usually partake. I have only gotten take-out, but from my limited experience the staff has been helpful and pleasant, and the interior looks clean and inviting. Give 'em a try! read more

Went here for lunch to celebrate my daughter's birthday, who is four. We were all treated so well, and the staff was so friendly. My daughter loved the salmon hand roll, the miso soup, and lychee ice cream, as well as the pineapple oolong mocktail (not overly sweet at all!) I've had a lot of miso soups, and this was one of the best I've ever had! And the lychee ice cream had real pieces of lychee in it, I'd go back for this alone. Some of the other favorites for our crew included the bluefin hand roll, the yellowtail crudo, and the crispy rice fish tartar. The flavors were fresh, elegantly crafted, and exploded in my tongue. The fresh wasabi (NOT HORSERADISH!) made this place a must repeat experience for us. The restaurant just got their liquor license this past week, and the cocktail menu was seriously impressive. I had a cocktail with Matcha and Yuzu, and it was perfectly balanced, not too sweet, with a great mouth feel. A wonderful cocktail that I'll come back for 100%. One of my friends recommended this restaurant when I was looking for a place to host my birthday party. The owner was super responsive. I reached out to her a couple of weeks in advance, and she worked with us to hammer out logistics with the birthday decorations and cake prep. She also helped us order some off-menu items we wanted for the party. During the party, we also ordered items from their menu. We were not only impressed with the overall fish quality, but also the small details they put into things. They provide real wasabi, and serve really aromatic tea from Paris that I've not seen at other restaurants. The 9 of us really enjoyed the experience - we've been to omakases in LA, NYC, and Japan, and their uni and otoro is up there with the greats. It's so refreshing to find a non-omakase restaurant that puts a high focus on the quality of their ingredients without breaking the bank for us customers. It's also very cool that they do private events! My friends and I had a great time celebrating my birthday, and we will definitely be back! read more

Happened to walk past yesterday with my baby for their grand opening and tried their cucumber roll (seasoned so well!), spicy salmon (10/10!), salmon roll (can't really taste the salmon much 6/10) and my daughter loved the furikake fries (light, crispy on the outside and right amount of fluff inside and not oily at all).
