Love sushi san happy hour deal. They have the best sushi and it does get pretty crowded here. The ambiance is nice inside but the lychee drink we got was alright not what we expected

The express lunch deal is so good! You get to choose 3 items from a nice list of options for $21! It's really nice if you want to try multiple things or are indecisive. I got the salmon bowl, the salmon avocado maki, and tuna crispy rice. The salmon bowl was definitely my favorite. The salmon was cooked very nicely so that it wasn't dry, and I loved the miso glaze that they put on top. It added a very nice sweetness to the salmon and created a very nice char. It was pretty small portion size though. The salmon avocado maki was solid too. It was the most filling! You get 5 pieces :) The tuna crispy rice was just alright. The rice part was good, but there was a bit too much mayo in the tuna. The miso soup that came complimentary with it was good too! I like how generous they were with the seaweed. Such a nice vibe inside! It's definitely a nicer spot, but still casual enough for lunch. I wanna come back for dinner! Service was quick and server was kind.

My husband went to Sushi-San on a work trip. He enjoyed the experience so much that he recommended I give the place a try on my trip to Chicago. Candidly it wasn't on my to-do, but the restaurant happened to be on my route back to my hotel and I hadn't had dinner yet. I walked into the restaurant, and there was a spot open right at the bar waiting for me. I think it was meant to be. Loved the vibe of the restaurant, which was casual but trendy. Best part of all was the music. My ears perked up when I heard Hieroglyphics - The Who... A Plus Remix. Instantly felt "at home" with the underground, old school hip hop. Compliments to their curated Pandora playlist. I ordered the the spicy scallop roll, super san roll, and sawara (Spanish mackerel) nigiri. The spicy scallop roll was my favorite. The super san roll was a mix of their toro with varying fattiness. I appreciated that you could order half rolls at Sushi-San, which came out to 5 pieces instead of 10. This was more than enough food for me. The sawara was buttery and fresh. If you don't like the "fishiness" of saba, you'll enjoy sawara. Lastly, overall customer service was great. The food came out incredibly fast. The bartender who assisted me was awesome. He was attentive and personable.

Sushi San is a great spot with tasty dishes and great service! Vibes are fun and casual. A lot of unique dishes in addition to the traditional sushi you can get at any sushi spot.

Came for the express lunch deal! It was $21 for miso soup and the choice of any 3 menu options. On a food tour for lunch, we decided to go to sushi San and its sister restaurant, ramen San where we got one express lunch deal at each restaurant. We opted for the tuna crispy rice, yuzu yellowtail, and Vietnamese pork rice bowl. The tuna crispy rice was your typical, delicious dish. The yuzu yellowtail rolls came with a yuzu dipping sauce, very fresh fish. The Vietnamese pork rice bowl was flavorful and the meat was tender. The service was great and the food came out sooo fast. Would absolutely come back

Express lunch for $21. Food was good.

I really like their express lunch. For $21 you start off with miso soup and you can pick three items out of a list of food options. There were plenty of options to choose from the list. I had the spicy tuna roll, the salmon roll, and their spicy tuna and avocado bowl. Food was really good and fresh and the portion size was more than enough. I would definitely come back.

    Scallop and Toro Nigiri

Came here with a reservation for dinner on a Saturday night and it was buzzing- def get a reservation. Started with some apps (crispy rice is always good) and drinks (Coconut Negroni was good) before getting to the main event of Nigiri. So apparently this spot imports all their fish fresh from Japan, but tell me why you would serve a tuna like this?! I'm gonna leave it at that. Scallop nigiri was great though, so 3 stars for the scallop alone.

Obsessed with Sushi-San. Their rolls are so fresh, and select ones are only $6 during HH! The spicy tuna and the avocado crunch are both a 5/5! Thoroughly enjoyed their crispy rice as well, solid 4.7/5. Only thing this restaurant could use is a patio! Dim lit dining area. Service was just okay. Busy Thursday HH!

Easy to make reservations on OpenTable. Friendly service! The inside was open and inviting~ Food was decent! Bang bang cauliflower was breaded so well and tasty. I had some handrolls which were solid as well. The crispy rice was not as crispy as I wanted and wasn't as warm as I wanted it :( the fish for the nigiri was decent as well Street parking but walkable from Grand station. 2 single occupant bathrooms in the back.

I've been to a hand full of sushi places and this is definitely up there when ig comes to quality of the food & drinks. Although we sat down fairly quick it took a while to get an order in. I had the edamame and wagyu. Wagyu was a bit chewy but super flavorful and had more tender parts to it. I will be back to try the rolls!

RESERVATION RECOMMENDED! This place was very popular so if you don't like to wait, call advance for reservation . It is very crowded even on the weekdays. The sushi is very fresh and the rolls are tasty too. Our waiter was very attentive. He is aware of my squid/octopus sensitivity therefore he made sure he inform the chef in regard to allergies. Every entree we had ordered had a an allergy tacks on it which I thought was hilarious but highly appreciated. I am thankful they pay close attention to my needs and accommodation. My only friendly suggestion is that that they bring out the edamame beans and cucumber salad first before anything comes out since that goes well with every entree. The two items were serve last and by the time our belly was content and full, we have no urge to eat it. It was packed to go for a midnight snack.

    Express sushi and sashimi

I came here on a weekday for lunch and highly recommend it. It was not too crowded and food came out pretty quickly after ordering. I like the modern vibes of this location. Seating was comfortable. I tried their express lunch menu, which is a great option if you're here during lunch time. You get to pick 3 items from the list and I chose tako taco (a little spicy but highly recommend- one of my favorite things that day), salmon avocado (I'm not a personal fan of the Meyer lemon sauce), and tuna avocado rice bowl. Each item is smaller portioned but all together it's a substantial lunch set. I also tried the express sushi and sashimi lunch set, which comes with a delicious seaweed salad which I would order on its own as an appetizer. The lunch set comes with their "oh-my-kaze." This includes salmon, hamachi and tuna. One piece of tuna was substandard and had a big piece of sinew in it. Our server quickly switched it for another piece. The only dish I would skip is the Peking duck sizzling rice. The taste was fine- a little on the sweeter side with the hoisin sauce but the portion was more of an appetizer size. It's also not a true Peking duck, which focuses on a crispy duck skin and this dish just featured duck meat.

Japanese Eggplant Tempura we had 4 orders!

I will say I didn't really enjoy the mochi donuts but I was so full I couldn't eat them until later so it may have been because they weren't as fresh and got hard. We had to make a late reservation since nothing was available earlier. We tried walking in earlier and there was a 1 hour and 45 min wait. So we kept our reservation for 9:30. Upon entering, the manager and the host were very friendly and promptly sat us about 15 min early. The ambiance is really nice, but the music... is way to loud. You have to yell across a standard 4-seat tabletop to communicate. Since everyone has to yell, the crowd noise then amplifies this issue. I've never understood restaurants that try to be a nightclub. You can have music at normal levels to keep the energy without causing your patrons to yell. Once we were seated, the waitress came over within 5 minutes. She was friendly, but slow. After she offered us water, she was didn't return to the table for 20 minutes to take drink orders. After we ordered drinks, it was another 15-20 to help with the menus. We asked about portion sizes (shareable vs not shareable). We were told each plate was good for 2-4 people. I'm not sure what portion sizes she classified suitable for sharing... but no way were a majority of our dishes enough to share. We ordered edamame, which we were able to share. We really liked how they salted it, sometimes you get edamame and it's bland. We also ordered spicy tuna sushi (6 pieces), Komodo sushi rolls, pork chops (comes with 2 pieces), 2 orders of wagyu sliders (only 2 per order), hotate batayaki (3 scallops), shishito peppers (8 grilled peppers), and yakatori don (chicken bowl with rice and a soft egg). I have tried many Japanese restaurants and have been to Japan as well. Loved the food. To start with the good, we really liked the pork chops. They were on the rarer cooked side but delicious. The sliders were really good as well. Tons of flavor and each one was a decent size. These 2 items we felt were slightly over priced but felt we got a great food experience for the money. The shishito peppers were barely grilled and bland. They literally were no better than what my teenagers can do on the grill. Absolutely not worth $12 for peppers. Each sushi roll was decent but very small very overpriced for what you get. There is nothing special about either roll. I have gotten better spicy tuna in the city, that comes with 8 rolls for half of momotaro's price. The scallops were very fishy. I love scallops, and I wouldn't order these again... no way! $22 for such. Small serving that was too fishy compared to other establishments. My chicken bowl yakatori don) had a great presentation. That's where the dish ends. The toppings overpowered the chicken. The chicken tasted like plain boiled chicken that was so bland, literally no flavor to it. After we were done, the waitress came over about 15 min later, asking if we were interested in dessert. We told her no, we were full and ready for the check. We sat around for over 20 minutes waiting. I'm watching our server talking in the corner with 4 other servers. Laughing, on their phones, etc. after watching them for over 10 minutes I walked up to the front host and asked for a manager. The girl, was prompt, and very friendly. I discussed my dissatisfaction with the service. It was slow, terrible for the price point of the restaurant. The manager brought the check to me fairly quickly and apologized. She didn't ask what they could do to make it right, nothing. Not until after the bill was paid she conveniently asked what they could do. Little late at that point. Overall, we have been to many low and high end restaurants in Chicago... River North, West Loop,, Manhattan, Munich, etc... and this was about as bad of service as you can get. With all the options in the city, I don't recommend this one.

The way it's written implies that you can choose an udon from the udon section, not the case. Minor gripe, but annoying nonetheless. The maki is fine, spicy tuna was bland but decent quality and the shrimp tempura maki was good but also lacking. Personally I prefer a spicy tuna with more tuna texture and this is basically puree, personal preference I guess. The udon is where my meal fell apart. For a lunch menu focusing on udon I expected a more flavorful broth and noodles that weren't overcooked. It's not like the underlying flavor is bad or anything, it's just barely there at all. The dashi is very weak and one dimensional, and the noodles taste like plain flour with a spongy overly soft bite. The toppings are extremely basic, I can't even comment on them because I'm not sure if I hallucinated them having any flavor or not. They might as well not exist. The shredded cabbage side salad is also mediocre. Dressing was weak and the cabbage could've been cut thinner. People I went with told me "maybe you just got the wrong things" but I don't think a chef should have losing items on their menu to begin with. Overall quite disappointed considering the name attached to this place.

The ambiance is reserved but comfortable and people were dressed from casual nice to more formal. The chef in front of us chatted a bit and was very friendly, happy to answer questions while he was prepping our next course. We had the matched wine courses as well and every one of them was a perfect hit for the course served. The service and the food were simple amazing. I would suggest this to anybody looking for the best Omakase experience in Chicago!

Masterclass in sushi, but the hospitality falls flat…read more I booked Mako for a special occasion, landing a rare 6:00 PM spot. The 23-course Omakase ($890 total for two, including two drinks) was culinary perfection, exquisitely crafted, beautifully presented, and fascinating to watch from the bar seating. The restaurant's interior is clean, moody, and Zen-like with dramatic lighting on the prep area. It starts off pin-drop silent, but as the night progresses, the room warms up into a pleasant communal energy. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality of the food. The atmosphere among the staff was cold and stiff. Roles were confusing (asking for a oaper napkin resulted in odd glares), and when my guest unrolled their wet towel (oshibori), a staff member scolded them for not "pinching" it correctly. Furthermore, after calling ahead regarding a birthday, I was told they couldn't accommodate a candle or small dessert. Handing out a signed paper menu at the end of the night feels like a cheap substitute for real celebratory effort at a Michelin-level price tag. The chefs are brilliantly trained, but the awkward hospitality and rigid micro-aggressions meant we left without that warm, satisfied feeling you expect from fine dining. Great food, but the overall guest experience needs work.
