I don't know how we've not come here all these decades. I grew up 6 blocks away. It's kind of tucked away off San Pablo, visually blocked by parked cars. We came for a late lunch today around 2:45. They're open until until 3:30 for lunch so just made it! They have lunch specials! My dad got his bento box with Teriyaki beef and asst tempura. One brother also got a bento box and a spider roll. Other brother got the nigiri 8 pc $20. Huge pieces of beautiful fish! I ordered two rolls - Una Kyo with unagi and cucumber $8.99 and Shrimp Tempura with shrimp, cucumber and avocado $12.99. Both were so delicious! Very efficient service, food came out quickly. The decor is really nice inside. It's a lot bigger on the inside. :)

Very warm and welcoming place. The chef made us some amazing sushi rolls and sashimi cuts. Juicy and flavourful. Ed preferred a caterpillar roll, Hamachi sashimi and 49ers roll. Very nice service, their green tea was also very refreshing. Would definitely go again.

A friend recommended this place for lunch. I got the bento lunch special. Chicken kaarage, and tempura vegetables. It wasn't a bad deal $20 out the door. My friend had some issues... if I ask you a question about the menu, and the waiter says "yes we have" and you bring me an item with no quail egg, after saying you have it... is that the customers mistake?? I'm just saying... service can be a little off. There were numerous sushi nigiri options that weren't available but they brought us something similar. Hahah. This place is worth a shot with a few mistakes... give it a shot. I've had worse in this neighborhood.

I just can't get enough of Yoshio! It's the best priced sushi in the Bay Area I'm pretty sure. Love the rolls so much and cutest lil hole in the wall ambiance. Service is great too. Can't say enough great things about yoshio

Love how cozy this place is. The rolls were so good and filling. The appetizer we got were these octopus balls, unfortunately there was barely any octopus inside.

Hands down my favorite sushi place in El Cerrito ~ within walking distance, excellent portions & value, and their dinner service is open until 12:30a, which when living in a small community is huge! What we typically do upon arrival if the restaurant is super crowded is add our names to the Yelp waitlist (they have a kiosk by the front door) which will alert us where we are in line & when our table is ready. Because of this service, we usually walk down the street to Little Hill Lounge for a cocktail and by the time we're finished, our table is usually almost ready! If coming with a large group, there is a super cool area (to note in this room: shoes off and you will sit on the floor with seats that have a back rest) that is separate from the other side of the restaurant. I've sat here before and it's an incredibly unique but fun experience! There's such an amazing array of maki, nigiri, sashimi, and signature/special rolls per night. I usually have my go-to rolls, but I recently tried a chicken teriyaki roll which was outstanding and so different! My husband usually orders the teriyaki beef udon noodle soup, with shared appetizers of edamame, veggie tempura, and seaweed salad. We love to switch things up because the menu is extensive, but sometimes there is comfort with ordering our classics. I also recently tried their curry chicken katsu dinner which was a nice treat on an evening I was looking for something warm & hearty outside of sushi specific. From date night, to late night, sitting at the sushi bar solo, or even meeting some friends, highly recommend pleasing the palate at Yoshio Sushi & big cheers over an ice cold mug!

Loved loved loved this place, but it seemed to have gone downhill since the pandemic. Food is still good but service really took a hit. But despite the food still being good, there was a dead fly in my food the last time I ate from here. And I didn't even noticed until after I had already eaten part of the ginger. So I don't think I'll be coming back for a long time.

    Been closed since Thanksgiving

I decided to post an update. I went by the location during an opening hours, and it was not open. Come to find out it's been closed since the holidays. I'm not sure what happened and if it's temporarily closed. But they their sushi is normally good. Which actually really sucks.

What a neat find! The inside is so beautifully decorated and well maintained. The service was really great, got food out pretty fast, and everything was great overall. Got to try the Chirashi and the Tonkatsu Curry. Both were great for the taste and price :) i think the curry was a little bland but still overall OK would definitely drop by here again in the future. Great experience, would definitely drop by here again in the future :)!

We drove by on 2/2/2026 at 6:30, and it is still closed. When is the new date to re-open? This is our go to sushi spot, so we would really like it back.

Do they serve sake (to drink)?

They have sake to purchase but not served for free with a meal.

Is this place an actual sushi buffet. Where you pay once and can order however many you want?

No. You pay per item or combo. They also have a la carte nigiri

It appears to be popular with families as well. It was a Friday evening after 9pm, kind of late for us to eat very much but I needed something so we popped in. It was quiet, maybe three or four other tables. Our food server was patient as I looked over the fairly large menu. Ended up with some of my current faves: hamachi nigiri, California roll, yam roll, and salmon skin roll. Everything was thoughtful, well prepared, and delicious. It was just enough food and I was good for the night. On our second visit, my hubby and I brought my dad for lunch to celebrate his 88th birthday. It was pouring rain outside but we were fortunate to get parking right outside the door. We ended up sitting by the window which was the same table we sat at during our first visit. We ordered gyoza (6) for the table. We all ordered bento. Dad had the beef short ribs and California roll, hubby had the Vegetable tempura and California roll, I had the Saba shiyoyaki and hamachi sashimi. All three came with miso soup and salad. Everything was delicious. My fish was well seasoned and moist, dad's beef short ribs were tender, hubby's tempura was light and crisp. Lunch was very reasonably priced for all we ordered. I am definitely a fan of this place and look forward to dining here again.

Review for dinner service on 6 March 25…read more I had been trying off and on to get a booking but nothing was ever available, so I was pleasantly surprised to snag a seating for two within a week of the reservation because a fellow Yelper cancelled her reservation (thank you Sarah T!) The following week, we were in for a wonderful, delicious and entertaining evening. The two other couples had made their reservations back in December, so I felt very lucky we did not have as long a wait. Chef Aki-san and Michiko-san are a husband and wife team. At 6pm, the door opened and Michiko-san invited the six of us to choose a seat at the sushi bar. We all sat down before a simple place setting: a square ceramic plate, hashioki (chopstick rests), hashi (chopsticks, paper napkin and oshibori (towel for wiping your fingers). She handed us a menu and checked in with everyone to see if there were any dietary restrictions or allergies, took our drink orders and a brought a small bowl of edamame for each couple. We declined ordering any side dishes because I suspected that the 16-item omakase selection would be more than enough for the evening. As it turned out, two salads were added to our already extensive menu. Nommmm ... more tastes for me :D As we drank and munched on edamame, we watched Aki-san stocking the bar with ingredients he would be serving to us. He introduced himself and in turn we introduced ourselves - where we were from, how we learned of the restaurant, etc. It turned out to be the first time for all of us. During the course of the evening, we learned quite a bit about his history and experience working as a sushi chef before opening his own restaurant. Our menu (in order) for the evening: -Tako and Sunomono salad with shiso leaf, drizzled with a light miso sauce -Blue fin toro -Ika/squid -Hokkaido scallop -Ebi/fresh water shrimp -Sake/salmon -Saba/mackerel -Ankimono (Monkfish liver) and Sunomono salad with scallions and tobiko, shiso leaf with a ponzo sauce -Ikura, avocado and tobiko -A5 wagyu -Seared albacore -Hokkaido uni -Buri/ hamachi yellowtail -Blue fin toro -Sake/salmon cold smoked with hickory -Anago (fresh water eel) -Unagi (salt water eel) -Tamagoyaki Everything was incredibly fresh and tasted of the sea. Each piece was carefully prepared, perfectly seasoned, beautiful on the plate. He talked about each item as we tasted and ate. I loved watching as he rubbed the wasabi root against a metal shark skin grater, a tool he has had forever. Chef Aki-san chided me when I confessed I was eating the nigiri in two bites - apparently that is the wrong way to eat! Nigiri is meant to be eaten in one bite, the logic being that you don't get the full experience of the taste and flavour in two bites. My issue is that most nigiri sushi these days have too much rice that my mouth is too full to appreciate the flavour. However, he prepares "low carb" portions so the fish and beef are highlighted, yet all in balance. To sum things up - the food and presentation was perfect. I am not a fan of eel, so those were my least favourite bites. It was my first time eating monkfish liver. I found it quite delicious and would definitely eat it again. Mitchiko-san was very sweet and attentive, noting if we needed refills of water or sake jars. The atmosphere overall was light, friendly and jovial, and we enjoyed the company of who we were dining with. Not to mention that Aki-san is quite entertaining in his own right. Note: There is only one service per evening so you will not feel rushed to eat and dash. We did not get out of there until 9:30pm. He also mentioned that starting in June they will be cutting back to two days a week - Friday and Saturday only - something to keep in mind. Will try our luck getting reservations again in about 7 months to celebrate our birthdays and anniversary.

I see a lot of people ordering maybe 3-4 handrolls and sharing appetizers but I mainly focus on the handrolls. These handrolls are on average 2-3 bites for me, 2 would be a big bite. There is no discount if you order from a set so order the sets only if you truly want every item in the list. If you come for lunch, take a look at their lunch sets because it comes out to only a couple dollars more and you get cucumber and edamame as an appetizer which is enough to share amongst two people. I love that they make the sushi rice vinegary here. I enjoy most of the items that I normally would like, there isn't a bad one except sometimes the black garlic aioli on the seared albacore tastes a bit fatty to me. Otherwise everything I order from my pictures are always fresh and good. One thing I noticed for the snow crab and chives is that they do not use mayo here compared to their Oakland location. I loved the ocean trout I had in early May and sad to see it gone by the end of May, it was sweet and fresh. Hope it comes back soon, @manager, let me know! lol thanks P.S. I do have a suggestion about the timing that food comes out, one time I was there for lunch and our table specifically had large gaps between the rolls coming out. I'm talking about 15 minutes before the next set comes out while other tables get multiple things in the meantime. After 45 min, I finally said something and the staff was able to get everything else out in 5 min so the kitchen was not backed up, she said it was some kind of timer the chef sets and maybe something was wrong there. I had brought a friend so I felt really bad for him to have a bad experience with the wait time but other than that the food was great.
