I have never been to Japan but I imagine this is what a local traditional sushi bar would be like. It was really clean as well. I read great reviews for the Bento Box - so I got one. We've been here many times over the years and it's seems lately the service has been inconsistent. The last couple of times, it took a minute to be seen to get a table. Im confused if they take Discover. My husband always paid here with Discover, then we were told they don't because of extra fees. Service aside, it's great sushi in a cozy environment. I don't know how we've not come here all these decades. I grew up 6 blocks away. It's kind of tucked away off San Pablo, visually blocked by parked cars. We came for a late lunch today around 2:45. They're open until until 3:30 for lunch so just made it! They have lunch specials! My dad got his bento box with Teriyaki beef and asst tempura. One brother also got a bento box and a spider roll. Other brother got the nigiri 8 pc $20. Huge pieces of beautiful fish! I ordered two rolls - Una Kyo with unagi and cucumber $8.99 and Shrimp Tempura with shrimp, cucumber and avocado $12.99. I ordered take out here and it was fast, yummy and delicious. Perfect flavor between the rolls, tempera, and bento box. Loved how filling everything was. When I wen to pick up the order there was a lot of people there. Cute and cozy but spacious enough. I love the layout of the place and would come in next time to try some more dishes. Not sure why but this isn't the first time I come here and the place is just closed but hours say it's open ? Is this a regular thing ? Has anyone else experienced this when coming by in a Friday night ? Stopped by here on a Monday night to grab some food with my coworkers. Overall, food is just okay. Nothing that stood out to me. I will say, their menu has a lot of variety, but not much in terms of alcoholic drinks. I tried a raw roll and a cooked roll along with chicken karaage. Again, everything tasted decent. Service was alright considering our larger party size, but we were also one of the only ones in the restaurant. The area is tucked in a quiet corner with a small size and one bathroom. Very warm and welcoming place. The chef made us some amazing sushi rolls and sashimi cuts. Juicy and flavourful. Ed preferred a caterpillar roll, Hamachi sashimi and 49ers roll. Very nice service, their green tea was also very refreshing. Would definitely go again. read more

A friend recommended this place for lunch. I got the bento lunch special. Chicken kaarage, and tempura vegetables. It wasn't a bad deal $20 out the door. My friend had some issues... if I ask you a question about the menu, and the waiter says "yes we have" and you bring me an item with no quail egg, after saying you have it... is that the customers mistake?? I'm just saying... service can be a little off. There were numerous sushi nigiri options that weren't available but they brought us something similar. Hahah. Hands down my favorite sushi place in El Cerrito ~ within walking distance, excellent portions & value, and their dinner service is open until 12:30a, which when living in a small community is huge! What we typically do upon arrival if the restaurant is super crowded is add our names to the Yelp waitlist (they have a kiosk by the front door) which will alert us where we are in line & when our table is ready. Because of this service, we usually walk down the street to Little Hill Lounge for a cocktail and by the time we're finished, our table is usually almost ready! If coming with a large group, there is a super cool area (to note in this room: shoes off and you will sit on the floor with seats that have a back rest) that is separate from the other side of the restaurant. I've sat here before and it's an incredibly unique but fun experience! There's such an amazing array of maki, nigiri, sashimi, and signature/special rolls per night. I usually have my go-to rolls, but I recently tried a chicken teriyaki roll which was outstanding and so different! My husband usually orders the teriyaki beef udon noodle soup, with shared appetizers of edamame, veggie tempura, and seaweed salad. We love to switch things up because the menu is extensive, but sometimes there is comfort with ordering our classics. I also recently tried their curry chicken katsu dinner which was a nice treat on an evening I was looking for something warm & hearty outside of sushi specific. I've been to Yoshio's multiple times across the years and it's a cute, quaint little sushi spot along San Pablo Avenue that's open late (AKA the biggest convenience when I'm craving sushi but not trying to travel too far when it's late at night). In my last visit, my sister and I ordered the following: - Lion King = classic as usual, tasty, a bit smaller than other sushi places I go to. - El Cerrito Roll = pretty good since it has avocado and cream cheese! It's a bit more on the heavier side of sushi rolls. - Lucky Roll = my favorite of the ones we ordered - this one was flavorful and the tuna and salmon combo was *chef's kiss* - Sashimi Salmon = simple and satisfying Service varies here but I'm usually content with my interactions with staff. The venue is cute and traditionally Japanese with nice warm lighting. The parking lot is pretty small but I usually find spots on the street without any problem. But despite the food still being good, there was a dead fly in my food the last time I ate from here. And I didn't even noticed until after I had already eaten part of the ginger. What a neat find! The inside is so beautifully decorated and well maintained. The service was really great, got food out pretty fast, and everything was great overall. Must be new owners or just new front of house staff? Won't be back until I see evidence in Yelp! reviews that they are back on track... too bad, it was my 2-3 times a month spot, now... NOT! Da Scene: Weeknight arrival after the inital rush, about 8pm or so. The 3 of us walk in and observe 2 tables seated towards the back... the rest of the booths and tables recently vacated with tables needing to be cleared. They was a new waitlist kiosk just to the keft, but it was locked, I assume since they were through their dinner rush. No other folks ahead of us, SWEET RIGHT?!. I'd be eating Hamachi Kama, Maguro nigiri, and a Shrimp Tempura appetizer in no time... NOT! Dudes behind the sushi bar clearly saw us standing there, yet made no attempt to alert the host/servers of our presence, they even sent some dishes out to the other tables, but no one was paying any attention to us. After what seemed like forever (probably only 5-7 minutes actually), I step further in almost at the sushi bar now, desperately trying for more acknowledgement, some eye contact, a smile or nod, something to let us know "it's all good, we've got you..." NOT! Another couple of minutes later a host/server comes closer to clear tables, I again try for some acknowledgement, she eyes me in a way that that bordered contempt - past mere indifference and certainly not welcoming. They grumbled something I could not understand and started to walk away... I was not gonna wait another 10 minutes so I interjected quickly, "Excuse me?" They gruffly said something about using the waitlist and gestured at the kiosk... at this point my wife had had enough and her generally introverted, quiet nature was placed aside as she exclaimed "What wait list, there's no one here except us, anyway the kiosk is locked!" The server/host continued to walk away... we all looked at each other and thought the same thing: NOT! We wheeled around and got the heck out of there and headed to another favorite spot... where our business would be appreciated, over in the Moeser Square just up the street. Da Grub: If the back of house is as bad as the front, my past great experiences will be a long gone memory, I may have to delete my posted photos as they no longer represent my experience. Hamachi Kama, Maguro nigiri, and Shrimp Tempura?? NOT! Never got a chance... Da Service: It all stopped with front of house... NO ONE cared enough to meet/greet/acknowledge us. At least 4 different people knew we were there... yet I had to almost step on the hosts' toes to get any attention. And once I did, I was told in unintelligible and annoyed terms, to use a waitlist kiosk even though there was no one waiting, and couldn't even if we tried as the kiosk was screen locked. For ownership... you must do something about this or you'll drive a lot of folks away. You don't have to kiss my a$$, but don't sh!t on my shoes and expect me to clean it up. Food was good last time, but this time? It didn't taste as good. Bad service. We loved this place last time we came, and we wanted to go again. Unfortunately, today was an upsetting day. The place is small, so I don't know why it took 25 minutes for someone to take our order. Not only that, but the waiter *actively* looked at us, then would seat other customers... They even took orders from them first! By that point, I almost just told my family let's just leave, but they wanted to wait. When we finally got our orders in, and food coming out, the atmosphere has changed to something less than pleasant. The food was okay. It didn't taste as good as before, but it might be because the service was not welcoming at all that the food tasted mid. We weren't checked on. We had to go right to the back where the wait staff are using their cells instead of checking once in awhile on customers. The chefs, I could understand they needed a break after cooking. Ordered Yoshio Sushi for take out and was very impressed with the quality of their food! My parents who are usually pretty picky also enjoyed the sushi rolls that we ordered. We got the Lion King, the Lucky Roll, the SF Giants Roll, the Happy Roll, and the Sashimi mini. The rolls had a great balance of flavors, with the fish being fresh, the rice seasoned well, and the sauces tied everything together perfectly. My parents loved the sashimi mini and wished we ordered more because the sashimi was cut substantial enough for their liking and they thought the fish was really fresh. Update: We've been back here a couple times since my last review (where we left on a sour note) and felt that I needed to change my Yelp review to accurately (and better) reflect the improvements. Solely based on the last two visits (most recent being two weeks ago), we've enjoyed our food and service. When it was still the lady server working there in 2023, she came over to our table often to refill our tea and would sometimes give us complimentary pickled vegetables for appetizers. It wasnt exactly "friendly" per se nor did she make small talk, but it was definitely better than their previous service experiences haha. As for our visit in Feb 2024, we didnt really have to wait much when we arrived (late at night & rainy weather). Still no greetings at the door, so dont expect that to change lol. Service was alright-- the younger server guy spilt some stuff and had to grab some extra napkins for us, but otherwise everything else went smoothly. The food was nice & warm (esp the Yosenabe; perfect for cold weather). The sashimi was fresh and good quality. I ordered the wrong sushi roll and the server had no issues in helping me change our order. The reason why the visit wasnt a 5 star experience though was because at the end of our meal, the server messed up on our receipt. We were the last table dining at the time and he gave us the table that was previously behind us...which was more expensive than ours. Good thing I had noticed since I have a habit of taking a picture of my receipts/expenses. He apologized and went back to get our correct receipt (which took a long time & I had a feeling he had given ours to the other table and had to retype everything we ordered ). Good thing we weren't in a rush, but it took a good 10 minutes for him to reprint it for us. Hopefully he didnt have to make up for the difference himself... I'm so sad I have to make this review because I absolutely love their food. Their service has always been meh; the waitresses aren't very friendly and always try to rush you out of the restaurant...I guess it's understandable because it's so small. I've been meaning to review for a while but now I made sure to do it because what I saw was disgusting! We came to the restaurant before 5pm, before they opened, to celebrate my DILs birthday. They opened late. No big deal. However, they only sat three tables, and then told us we had to wait because they only had one waitress. Blessing in disguise, I guess, because as we were sitting (with stomachs grumbling) I look up at the sushi counter to see a sushi chef rubbing away at his nose. I was shocked, but became even more shocked when he took his thumb and index finger to pick both nostrils. I started talking out loud to my family and then they were able to witness him doing it, too. Several times! He didn't wash his hands, he went from rolling, to rubbing, to picking and then rolling (sushi) again. I felt sick and immediately didn't want to eat there anymore. So we got up and went to Los Miles down the street, which was not as good as I know my food would have been there. But, there was absolutely no way I could eat there without thinking of him digging in his nose. I don't know if I ever could eat there again. Didn't this guy take ServSafe training? I'm so sad. There's a lot that can go wrong and be forgiven with service, food and everything else that goes into a place like this but having rice that's long, over cooked and tasteless to the point that it's not really recognizable as rice is unforgivable. My Mom took my Stepdad and I here for an early Father's Day dinner. She made reservations for 6:00 p.m. and we were seated immediately. I highly recommend making reservations. This was my first time dining here. We ordered two appetizers to share, the Hiya Yakko and Ocean Salad. Both appetizers were light and refreshing. For my meal, I ordered the Small Salmon Sashimi and Chawan Mushi. The sashimi came with four fresh and thick pieces that just melt in your mouth. The Chawan Mushi was delicate and flavorful. The egg was light and it came with clam, shrimp, fish cake, and mushroom inside. I really enjoyed what I ordered and our food came out relatively fast. For a Saturday night the restaurant was slammed with both dine in and online orders. There were only a few waitresses working and all of them were constantly running around. I noticed that customers who came after us were waiting a long time to be seated, have their orders taken, and be served. Even those looking to pick up their orders we're waiting. As the night progressed, we were checked on and helped less and less--which is understandable. Another note is that parking is limited. We were fortunate enough to have an off-duty staff/friend dine with us for dinner. She made the difference because the usual items we had ordered were so-so. The items that she had recommended were excellent! Recommended food: 1) Dobin mushi - a seafood soup that was unique and had a lot of flavors. There were shrimp, scallop and bonito flakes in this interesting looking pot. This was definitely a surprise. 2) Chawan mushi - egg steamed to perfection. Our friend was describing how much effort it took for the steamed egg to look perfect with "no holes." I gained a new level of appreciation for this seemingly simple dish. 3) Kobe beef - I don't think this was even on the menu. In terms of texture, the beef could have been less cooked, but the flavor was on point. 4) Sashimi Deluxe - $35 for 18 pieces of fresh sashimi is a very good deal. 5) Fresh wasabi - Need to order this specifically. Otherwise you'd get the regular wasabi. This was not as "spicy" or potent as the regular wasabi, but tasted better. The only gripe I had was the alcohol choices. No draft beer (I was crying inside). Sapporo and Asahi ran out during the meal. Only hot or cold sake. After the meal, I had learned that Funaguchi sake was available, but was not shown on the menu. I've passed by Yoshio many times, and finally got to try it this weekend. The restaurant is nestled on San Pablo with limited parking. Interior was also smaller, so i guess they didn't need that many parking spots. Traditional Japanese decorations adorn the entire restaurant. We ordered assorted sashimi deluxe and dragon roll for takeout. I'm not sure what was exactly in the assorted sashimi (tuna, salmon, hamachi, ?, ?) but the fish was super fresh, creamy and delicate. I would definitely recommend! Dragon roll was delicious as well. Fried shrimp tempura inside the roll was not soggy, still retained its crisp and didn't have hard chewy shells that I've experienced in other places.
