2.5 rating. I was hesitant to try this place based on other reviews. It was decent at best. Large menu to pick from - and a bit overwhelming. The roles were cut haphazardly and did not look appetizing at all. The salmon avo was pretty good though and tasted fresh. The yellowtail lacked flavor and had huge chunks of warm fish throughout (not great) This place was pretty pricey, compared to others in the area. For 2 rolls this was $22. Yikes! Good, Not Great SPECIALS: Went on Wednesday because their website advertises bogo sushi. When we arrived and asked about it, we were told that was pre-covid, the website hadn't been updated. The correct specials were posted on the window. FOOD: Ordered hibachi chicken and shrimp, Huntersville Roll and New York, New York rolls. My mom ordered a spicy tuna roll. Chicken in hibachi chicken wasn"t good but the rest of the hibachi was. Our rolls were quite large and tasted good. The spicy tuna roll was small and had a strange tasting red sauce on top - wouldn't order again. AMBIANCE: Very basic inside, was empty, rolls come on a large tray, everything else is in styrofoam. Maybe better for to go. PRICE: $45 before tip for the two rolls and hibachi not bad, but more than I expected because they didn't have their advertised bogo deal. Pulled up on a Friday evening with my frisbee boys and it was pretty quiet- more people seemed to be doing take out rather than eating in. You order at the counter, and there aren't servers. However, the service was great! The owner was a personable guy and gave us free drinks. He also brought the food out to us outside. Food itself was okay- got the hibachi chicken and shrimp. Presentation definitely wasn't wonderful, but neither was the food. I was surprised that they didn't have any greens on the platter and the carrots were way too sweet. Sticky tables, shrimp sauce was being portioned in the back of dining room but was just left sitting out for God knows how long. Terse guy at the front at some point ended up back there portioning out more sauces. Do you not have a prep space in the back? Their doordash/uber tablets all sit out in the already small dining room. Just a disorganized location. The food waa quick, the food was hot. Nothing wow about it. Sushi is average. Prices are fairly-decent considering the previous. However, there a few staff members that should not be representing that business. There is a tall disheveled-looking manager that is constantly sweating and rushing everything from your order to other order so that he is dripping sweat on the Togo bags. There was also a blonde hair sushi maker female who was extremely rude and about forgetting tempura flakes, even yelling over the owner with rude remarks. For an average sushi place, I would suggest getting your customer service improved , especially in Huntersville - where as we grow there will be alternatives locally to this location. read more

After getting a haircut close by, it was lunchtime and I was hungry so I was on the fence between sushi or salad...sushi won out so I placed an order online. Kept it simple and ordered the fried California roll (called Francesca) and accompanied it with an order of fried chicken and veggie dumplings (Gyoza). Notification said 15-35 minutes. When I walked in about 25 minutes later my order was ready and waiting and a pleasant person behind the register handed me a styrofoam cup with a lid and sealed straw to fill myself at the drink fountain dispenser. While it was a sunny spring day, it was windy so I opted to sit inside and enjoy my lunch. Fried dumplings were nice and crispy, not overly greasy and still a good temperature. The traditional Gyoza sauce had an unexpected spiciness that detracted from the dumplings so after a few tries, I skipped. The Fried California Roll was tasty and the outside was a fried crispy coating but rather than a batter coating, it was more similar to a cornflakes coating. It tasted okay with that coating and it wasn't greasy. The rice seemed unusually large for sushi rice and it crumbled more easily than expected. The other fillings also slipped out easily from their surrounding rice enclosure. Because of the larger sized rice the entire roll was bigger than expected and while it was sliced after frying, the pieces were too big for a single bite and because the oversized rice also didn't stick together well, once you bit one piece in half, the remaining portion promptly began to slip apart. Overall, messiness aside, I thought it tasted fine. They didn't automatically include sliced ginger (or wasabi) which are traditionally served with sushi but fortunately, since I was still eating there, I was able to go up to the counter and ask for ginger which was readily provided. If I were to ever eat here again, I'd want to remember to ask for it in advance.... But, it's unlikely I will ever return. In less than an hour after eating this lunch, I began experiencing intestinal issues (not stomach related, no nausea). My intestines were grumbling and cramping for the next 15-25 minutes, followed initially by gas...that eventually led to an unexpectedly urgent drive home. After a prolonged visit down the hall, I managed to resume my remaining errands without further interruptions. Needless to say, I can only speculate that something was either spoiled or cross-contamination occurred in the food preparation area. Either way, it's unlikely I'll be having a craving for sushi from this place, or anywhere else, anytime soon. read more

This is a great little sushi spot with, almost always, consistent quality. I would only recommend going on Wednesday and Friday though, as those are the days that they do buy one get one sushi rolls. The sushi is great, and my go-to rolls are the Morhmann, Juan, and Fall Season rolls. I love that you can grab a bottle of eel sauce and bring it to your table. And I also love the baskets on each table with napkins, chopsticks, sauce cups, and soy sauce. The staff is a bit lacking, not super friendly. And the food takes a bit to come out typically, but we don't mind since we enjoy the laid back atmosphere. This place won't revolutionize sushi for you, but definitely a super solid choice if you're in the area on a Wednesday or Friday. read more

I invite you to compare what you can find on Google, or even Sushi Star's own menu with the photograph attached here. This cost me $11.45 plus tax. This is not a budget price, so I am not expecting a budget roll. I tipped up front $5.00 because the place was deserted and she was by herself. What you see in the photo was what she brought me after being tipped half the cost of the food she made. I brought it back, explained how lame this was, showed her the photo on her own menu and asked how she thought this compared? Her only response was "I'm sorry Sir." No offer to make it right and at that point I was too pissed to ask as that was even more lame than being brought this rip off in the first place. To the owners of Sushi Star: CONGRATULATIONS! We opened it up, the gyoza's were soggy, the sushi roll was practically falling apart, and the one hibachi meal (that was the first one) was so bland the broccoli didn't even have color, and the only good thing about the second hibachi, the one we had to wait on, was the carrots. Honeslty, they were decent, and I think I should have looked at more of their crazier rolls than the ones I chose. I usually get spicy tuna everywhere and use that as my base for sushi spots, and this one wasn't anything special or warranting a trip back, but it was good. I frequent this restaurant. I love their sushi, especially the B1G1 Free specials on Wednesdays. however, I went in one Wednesday evening recently and saw they had a new employee. This person was not friendly at all. She was chomping on either food or a piece of gum when I entered and paid for my food. She didn't greet me, no how are you doing... You're kind of getting two reviews for the price of one. I went to get a haircut next door, but it was a 20-minute wait. So, I hit up Sushi Star. Unfortunately, I didn't see the sign on the window for the Lunch Special when I walked in, which would have saved me $5 or so, and I wasn't informed about it when I ordered, but the girl behind the counter was friendly, and I should have paid more attention. With all the Teriyaki and Hibachi, I wasn't sure what to get. Teriyaki Chicken? Teriyaki Steak? Hibachi Chicken? Hibachi Steak? With rice or noodles? I went with Teriyaki Chicken with noodles. It was good. It didn't blow my mind, but it was a solid performance. Also, sitting outside on a nice day was pretty cool (and pretty warm). When I got my haircut, the lady giving me the haircut said she usually gets the Hibachi Chicken. When I asked if she liked it, she shrugged and said, "It's okay." This is definitely quick sushi. I dropped in on Friday after 1pm and it wasn't very busy. Their deal of the day was BOGO rolls. I ordered the New York, New York and added the Olivia as my free roll. Neither rolls featured raw seafood. I was being cautious because they aren't the cleanest establishment. In fact, when I walked up to the register I noticed that the woman who was running the register looked sweaty and she coughed into her shirt as she greeted me.
