I found myself up in Sioux Center for work yesterday and as a group we were going to the fruited…read moreplain. I had never heard of this location, but they assured me that I was going to enjoy it. From the outside, it just looks like an older brick storefront on their main street, but once inside, it has such a cute eclectic coffee shop vibe that is putting out really good food in addition to coffee. There were a number of different nooks to enjoy coffee and conversation in private, a fairly large dining area, and a separate room that I imagine could be used for a large group or just spill over for the lunch service. I opted for their Panini that had ham, brie, and apple with a cup of tomato bisque. My colleague got the curried chicken salad on croissant (both our sandwiches were the half size!) with a cup of potato and carrot soup. A couple of the people we were with got their flatbread pizzas, which also sounded and looked delicious. If you find yourself in town and are looking for a pick me up or a delicious lunch, definitely check it out!

Turns out, I'm really glad I did. Inside, it's surprisingly nice, with a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere. I happened to be there on Monday, when they have a half-price wing special for dine-in, so that was an easy choice. The wings were very good, but the real surprise was the steak fries. They have a simple seasoning that somehow makes them completely addictive. I was already full, ate every one of them, and still wanted more. Another small thing I appreciated: the iced tea is actually brewed tea, not the syrupy stuff that comes out of a soda machine. That tells you something about the place. The north wall opens up toward a wetland area, and they have fans going, making that space surprisingly comfortable even on a warm summer day. It's a really nice setup. The staff were super friendly, the prices seemed very reasonable, and everything just felt easy and unpretentious. What started as a convenient halfway stop turned into a place I'd actually seek out. I think I'll be planning future road trips with The Train Station in mind. Highly recommended.

I had the ribs and wings combo (bourbon sauce on both) and the soup of the day: chicken tortilla. The soup was actually quite good, but the wings were a tad dry. The ribs were fine--reminded me of Famous Dave's. The wait staff were friendly but not all that attentive. We waited a long time for the bill and drink refills. Give it a try if you are passing through and want to skip the 100th Pizza Ranch seen on the trip.
