Does it get any better to get to sit and have sushi travel past your table like a train? Nope, it doesn't. Love this place.

I was looking for some place nearby that would accept online order for take outs and was striking out left and right on Yelp. I came across Sushi Train on DoorDash and saw it had great reviews. I put in an order for a spicy sushi combo and a vegetable sushi dinner set. The ordering and pick up was fairly seamless. Had i known it was a conveyer belt place, i likely wouldn't have picked it, but the high reviews and high occupancy gave me confidence. We took our orders to the car and i knew just looking at it the sushi was going to be bad. The rice, though very thin, looked poorly cooked. My intuition was on point - the rice was undercooked and stuck to my teeth in a gummy, chewy fashion. People think that sushi is about the fish...it's actually about the rice. In this case, the fish sushi was better than the vegetable one (which included one that was cucumber and peanuts?!) because it covered up the poorly executed rice. The miso soup was also under seasoned. The edamame was good, but seriously that shouldn't be too hard. My boyfriend didn't think it was so bad, but he also enjoys sushi fast food and I think he was missing his usual place in Hawaii. I'd give it a 2.5 to be fair, but given the high reviews I had to err on the lower end. I'm unclear how a place that serves ankimo and uni could have such horrendous sushi roll... read more

Let's just be clear up front about what you are paying for. You are buying the experience of the conveyor belt sushi buffet. You are not buying expert sushi bar staff who guide you through the latest market freshness. You are not buying craft sake cocktails or attentive service. The price is consistent with you buying at least one of these things (you're walking out at $50+ per adult if you brought your appetite) but you ain't getting them. You are getting the fun of your kids saying "dad! Get that one!" and looking forward to the outing all week, and also of being able to take your kids for a sit down meal without the inevitable fuss between ordering and eating. It's not bad sushi at all! It's about the same quality as you'd get at Lunds, with a few exotic things thrown in. There are a few items, like the seared tuna and the sashimi pieces, that they do an extra good job on (and you pay for that). They have a cool set of vegetarian options I've never met before (avocado peanut... it's a thing). It is far from my go to place, but it's worth a trip once in a while. read more

This is a fun stop to go to if you want a different take on to a typical dining experience. I found the sushi we had to be okay, and I enjoyed the majority of rolls we purchased. The variety wasn't huge. I went during noon, and it was fairly quiet, and I didn't have any issues with getting items I wanted off the conveyor belt. It does get pretty pricey since it can be hard to keep track of the prices of each plate as you pull it off and enjoy your meal. It ended up being $60 for 2 people. We went to sushi train at 5pm on a Friday. We were a party of 4 and seated right away. A party of 4 is perfect. The server was friendly and explained the process well. They have a menu from the kitchen and a menu of sushi with the list of ingredients. The plates are all color coded for price and had the name of the item on the plate. They have plastic dividers between the booths and plastic tops on the food to keep others germs out. Servers were wearing masks and had good COVID food handling procedures. The restaurant was fairly busy when we left at 6pm. There were some families, but overall it was mostly adults. I spent about $30 for dinner. They have a bar menu and sake. This is a great place to get together with friends. It has a good vibe and relaxed professional environment. read more

Choo Choo, Sushi train is such a cool concept. Whoever thought of this is a genius because a foodie like me literally had to try and exercise restraint because my eyes were way bigger than what my tummy could handle. I truly felt like a kid in a candy store and appreciated the fact that the dishes on the conveyer belt had lids to cover the food because there were some "actual" kids who similarly were feasting their eyes and hands but thank the lord for the covers to shield all of us from their little hands...lol. After much indecision, and watching so many yummy options pass by, I settled on the Philadelphia roll, the Salmon lover roll, the Avocado and Salmon roll, and a bowl of miso soup. This place was so cool the first time I came here two years ago. Of course the magic dies down each time I come. I think the sushi is decent for what you pay. You come here more so for the experience rather than mind-blowing sushi. They are open now during covid. They do try to seat you distantly from other tables, but if there's enough guests, they will be seated in the booth next to you. I've been here numerous times, and it's usually great. Not so much the last visit. It wasn't very busy at all, but our server was jogging around the restaraunt huffing and puffing like he was overwhelmed. He was rude and would actually avert his eyes to the ceiling as he walked by his tables, so he could ignore his customers and go on about his important jog. I will never be back. read more

Sushi Train is probably closer to a 3.5/5 stars than 4/5 but I'll round up given their consistency in service, respectable selection of raw and cooked line items, and the novelty of the experience. As others have pointed out, the food or "sushi" train uses color coding to help patrons identify both the cost of the item and a more detail description on the placemat menu. Items are reasonably priced - though they do ass up - and commiserate with the good quality. This is a fun option to get your sushi fix solo, on a date, with family, or with friends! read more

It was mediocre sushi in a sardine can crowded space that cost an arm and a leg, traveling around the restaurant on a toy train. I can understand why people go, I don't get why they return. You know you're living right when an awesome sushi restaurant moves into your neighborhood. We waited all summer for the hubbub to simmer down before trying Sushi Train. It was worth the wait! PRO TIP: Unless you are really into the conveyor experience, sit at the bar. Your drinks will come faster and you can still order everything off the menu. But don't take my seat, m'kay? We got our happy on with beer, sake and sushi rolls. I had a few Asahis (recall that we live in stumbling distance) and The Smokin' Hubster started with a sake flight. He eventually moved to glasses of Sho Junmai Ginjo, so we both did some damage to the overall bill. For anyone that's eaten sushi rolls at other places: The rolls are roughly half-sized and half-priced. That took us a moment to adjust to, and then we realized that meant we can try more things! We saw Sushi Train on a TikTok! It looked cool and we wanted to check it out. We sat down and started picking our plates. No waiting. The plates are color coded and are priced according to the color. I actually had a special order of Char siu ramen but I substituted with udon noodles... making a Ramdon. It was fabulous. The broth was seasoned perfectly. Some ramen places make their broth too salty; making you not want to keep eating. I finished this whole bowl. The sushi plates are color coded so you can tell how much you're spending. I've been waiting for this to arrive in Mpls. Ever since Ichiban closed (sad), they had a river with sushi boats. This cool way of conveyor belt sushi is mesmerizing. My date and I barely chit chatted about anything other than discussing what roll we should try next. The clearly color coated plates make it easy, if your only trying to spend a certain amount. Our plates ended up being more of the purple plates which happened to be the most expensive rolls on their menu. Purple plates were only $5.50 This is a awesome place to try new rolls you normally wouldn't go after. We came here on a busy Saturday. We had to wait about 35 minutes after checking in but once we sat down the server was greeting us immediately and bringing our drinks. The food was phenomenal. I tried 6 different types of sushi and each one was fresh and delicious. The spicy tuna and spicy crab were my favorites. You can tell all the sushi was made right before being put on the conveyor belt. We were on our way to a concert so we were able to eat and pay within 30 minutes, but if we had more time we would have stayed longer. I'll be back next time I come to Minneapolis! We got 7 plates total and the price was about $45. Great prices for the amount of sushi we had. Our server was SO nice and very sweet. 10/10 would recommend. read more

The first problem we ran into was that he is colorblind and had a little trouble deciphering what plates were at which price points. You can order off the menu, but we wanted the conveyor belt experience so we waited and I helped him pick a couple plates. The experience was fun, but it occurred to us that it may have been better to sit closer to the kitchen to receive the freshest plates possible. They also had some things on the belt that we weren't interested in, but would have been good for families -- peanut butter sandwiches, served as rolls. Our server Keri separated our group into two booths to see us and our other group got a different server. Their experience was fine but my part of the service was horrendous. One of our friends wasn't eating so just had water and Keri yelled at him for not getting anything to eat and told him next time to tell her so she won't serve him. Then she gave me a dirty plate with dried ginger and when I asked for a new plate she joked that I was given free food. Sushi conveyor belt restaurants are a new concept in Minneapolis, but are pretty common in Japan. We enjoyed them during our travels, and had to check Sushi Train out. We asked to be seated right by the sushi chefs, and got counter seats right facing the chefs. Happy to report - the area is clean, and the sushi is prepared with care and precision. The Good: Taste and quality are great. Music is fantastic and service is enthusiastic. I especially enjoyed sashimi plates, and yellowtail sushi. Note for owners: add more speakers to the place - the music is fantastic, but we could barely hear it where we were sitting. The Bad: It's pricy. My husband and I paid over $150 for dinner. But to be fair, we mostly took the purple plates (colors indicate the price, and purple us $5.50 per plate), and had 2 draught Asaki beers each. Tea cups are TINY. We drink green tea with sushi, and had to keep flagging the waitress for refills. The Ugly: Conveyor belt sushi has a mechanism, where sushi that made multiple circles around the restaurant, and didn't get picked, is no longer considered fresh and gets ejected. This mechanism assumes that the chef places the plate on the conveyor, and the only person who can remove it, is the customer. Well, clever chefs kept lifting and moving the plates as they made it back to the kitchen area, thus re-setting the timer. Good for the business, bad for the consumer - raw fish kept in room temperature longer than intended just kept traveling around the restaurant. read more

Went here for a date night with my boo thang during the pandemic. They were good about social distancing and cleanliness. The train was such a fun aspect to what would normally be a sushi dinner. Each plate that goes by is a different color, which indicates price so they make it easy to tell what you're working with, price wise. I went there with my boyfriend, just the two of us, and they refused to seat me by myself to wait for him. He was about 10 minutes behind me coming from our hotel. They continued to seat others, and when he showed up, we had to wait for a table, which I was slightly annoyed with., but they basically said it was my problem for not knowing their policy. (How would I?) On the following visit, my boyfriend and friends got there at 8pm (they close at 9pm). There were four of them, two of them were there. They refused to seat them until the 2 others showed up, and then told him that they stop seating at 8:10 even though they close at 9pm.We were all working an event, and sometimes we finished late. Being treated badly and as though we didn't matter on top of mediocre sushi wasn't worth it. I'm originally from NYC, I've seen the gimmick before with the conveyor belt. I'm so glad we have conveyor belt sushi in Minneapolis (I've only ever had it in Tokyo)... what a time to be alive! Having a huge array of sushi and Japanese appetizers constantly chugging towards and around me is a dream. The one thing that always made me skeptical about conveyor belt sushi was wondering how long the sushi stays on the belt, but Sushi Train has unique technology: a special sensor that's taped to the bottom of each plate, so you never get "old" sushi. Each plate is color coded with a different price point, from about $2-$6 each. You can grab anything right off the belt from: nigiri, sashimi, specialty rolls, salads, desserts, and some novelties. You can also get al la carte made-to-order items off the menu! Yes, some of their items are fusion-y (cooked rolls, PBJ rolls, etc), but I was thrilled to find some Japanese treats like uni (sea urchin) and ankimo (monkfish liver).
