I ordered off of UberEats so this is a limited review. Tasty, fresh, and affordable sushi! It was a nice day out and I was craving for sashimi since I wanted to eat something refreshing and not too heavy. I also wanted to try out a new place since I was looking to expand my options for ordering and Sushi U is definitely now on my list! I ordered the Sushi and Sashimi Bento which comes with a spicy tuna roll, 5 pcs of sashimi (2 tuna and 3 salmon), 3 pcs of nigiri (ebi, salmon, and tuna), a side salad and side dish (spring rolls) with a miso soup. It came to $16.50 before tax and delivery which is a VERY affordable price for the portion you receive! The spicy tuna roll was just the perfect amount of sweet heat as I can't usually take super spicy foods. Super happy with my order today and will be ordering again! read more

I ordered the U Special Bento A and was really good. Dynamite roll was flavourful although the beef teriyaki was a bit too oily. The tempura seemed to be made fresh but the gyoza seemed to be store bought. Overall it was good. May return for the rolls. read more

I ordered lunch at this place. It's a small venue and it located in a strip mall on Broadway in Burnaby. On that day, I ordered the California Bento Box for takeout. Overall, the dishes tasted great. The Teriyaki chicken was great in taste and the meat was fresh and tender. The California Roll and Shrimp Tempura were well-portion great in taste too. Hidden in the plaza with buy low in Burnaby ~ Service was great - patient, friendly and unrushed - I found the rolls to be tasty , fresh and nicely presented ~ The spicy noodles did not hit the spot for me ~ Might be due to my high spice tolerance but this tasted closer to sweet than spicy - not to mention it was essentially instant noodles with cabbage ~ Salmon sashimi was spot on , fresh and nicely cut - However , the tuna lost a star - tasted mushy with a strange bitter taste to it ~ Not sure what was happening there - hopefully it was a one off? The Hotate Aburi was also a miss ~ had a strange sour taste - I would visit again to give it another try ~ but for now - missing stars for questionable freshness of Tuna and Hotate - as well as the disappointing spicy noodles ~ read more

A decent sushi place serving the neighborhood. I ordered the house roll and the sashimi and sushi lunch bento. The food was ok, nothing that really stood out. The difference in the bento would be spicy tuna roll instead of the typical California roll. That was a nice touch. The sashimi and sushi were fresh. The house roll had a variety of fish in it, including smoked salmon. That took me a while to figure out what the taste was. Not sure if I will order from here again. This little hole in the wall is one of my favourite gems in Burnaby. It's located near Holdom station and by the Buy Low grocery store. The previous owners of this restaurant were also some of my favourite and I am glad the legacy continues. The staff are so nice and I enjoy being a regular here! They are Korean run, nice spaced out seating and affordable dishes. I personally enjoy their oyako don and sushi platters (perfect for parties or a hungry me LOL). Please give this spot a try! My go to sushi place when I come back to Vancouver. This place is so close to my place and quality is very good that it's usually the first thing I eat after I drop off my luggage. The rolls are great, you can taste the quality and freshness. The rice is also perfectly cooked and seasoned (not mushy and has a nice chew). Mayo based fillings aren't just mixed with mayo like other places. I specifically got the spicy chopped scallop roll, california roll and BC roll. Chopped scallop is great and is actually seasoned with something that isn't just sriracha. Cali roll is great filler. BC roll was the star out of the 3 as the salmon skin was crispy and even had some meat to it. Sashimi is fresh and great portion sizes. Nigiri is pretty standard. Overall this is a nice hole in the wall and a great representation of what the average sushi place is like in Vancouver. I wouldn't call this a must try destination but it's a great place to order from regularly on a weekday night. TLDR: Great neighbourhood resto, not something you need to go out of your way to try but is a place you can easily add to your weekday rotation. The food is good, not outstanding. read more

The portions are a good size and when we make a substitution for salmon or tuna, we don't get charged My personal favorite was the U Special Bento B, and the hotate aburi! The servers are very nice, they also offer gluten free soy sauce! They also gave us free miso soup and deep fried ice cream at the end to try. Sushi U has slowly become one of my favourite sushi places in Burnaby! They are currently doing takeout only due to the pandemic so we decided to order takeout. They have a very quick ordering service online and within 15 minutes our order was ready to pickup. We decided to get 2 california rolls, a dynamite roll, a salmon avocado roll, 2 pieces of aburi salmon nigiri and they gave us the edamame on the house which was so sweet! The sushi rolls were so delicious and had so much filling, not too much rice and the rolls weren't too crazy big but just the right amount. The aburi nigiri was so tasty and had an amazing sauce. The food was extremely affordable and we were so full by the end. We definitely will be making Sushi U our go-to sushi spot from now on! read more

Decided to check out this neighbourhood joint on a weekday lunch for a weekday lunch takeout. I'm not sure if they've ever changed hands but ever since I was growing up in N Bby there's always been an unassuming sushi join in this tiny strip mall, and this is the first time I've ever visited. They are Korean run and similar to Sushi Cali type of rolls and options. I ordered their Volcano Roll and a bunch of nigiri, with special instructions which were followed. Although their prices are a bit higher than other joints, I think their quality made up for it. I would definitely be back a few more times to see if it can replace my usual local go-to sushi spot. read more

The quality was great, but the portions were small and I feel it was a little over priced. $8 for a chicken teriyaki roll or beef, which is a hit with the kids. . You only get 5 pieces of each, yes they are larger pieces but used to getting to rows per roll, so that was a little disappointing. Flavour was good though. This tiny hole in the wall spot doesnt disappoint, the sushi is amazing and affordable! The space is super small so if you have a big party, you might want to opt for takeout. The menu is quite extensive and you can tell the fish quality is top notch. I'm a huge fan of how many seared items are on the speciality rolls menu, but what really caught my eye was that the seared rolls even has the side of the rolls slightly seared (on the rice) which gave it a much more intense charred flavor, but it wasnt overwhelming. I definitely stretched my stomach a bit more than desired, but It was satisfying, i have no regrets. I highly recommend checking this spot out at least once!!! read more

We were disappointed with our order last night. The seaweed was old and as a result, very chewy. The rice was hard and dry. That being said the sashimi was very fresh but the size of the order had shrunk. The fish inside all the rolls were fresh as well. We were told to pick up the order at 6:45pm and when we showed up it was not ready. It was very busy. We have to wait for another 10min. We had very good experience with their food in the past. Real authentic Japanese sushi. This place is tucked away in an ageing strip mall.but it still shines. This jewel is yet another Yelp find. Right away you you are greeted warmly and seated. Warm tea arrives shortly after. We had the deluxe sahimi, veg and beef udon. The sushi was amazing. The presentation and portion were outstanding. The tea kept coming just the way I like it. My new go-to! Well just for aburi & toro sashimi---when it melts in your mouth, you know it. Only an amazing palate will know :) Salmon & toro for the aburi, nicely seared but sauce could've been avoided. The crunch was good, spicy tuna roll should be a past. Unexpected surprise next to Buy Low Foods! Usually my boyfriend and I go all the way down to the heights to get out sushi fix, but today we decided to give their place a try. It looks a little run down, but their service and food were definitely not. I ordered a bento and he ordered a tiger roll with an appetizer tempura. Portions were good and had fair prices. I didn't get a bite of his sushi but mine were on point. The nigiri were a good size, salmon was nice and creamy, and the tempura was light and crunchy. I wish the tuna sashimi was a bit more fresh but that's my only complaint. Also that they didn't give me a spoon for my miso soup and I found drinking it out of the cup a bit more difficult. The seaweed and tofu were stuck hard to slurp down lol. They gave us two pieces of tempura ice cream for dessert for free! What a nice touch. Will be back soon! read more

An out of the way sushi restaurant well worth a visit. Small venue...huge menu; so many choices and some really innovative special rolls. I was starting to get 'sushi'd out' lately, but our dinner at Sushi U was exceptional. My new fave I have to say, and I can't wait to go back. Staff were en pointe and super friendly. Many years ago when I lived in the area, this restaurant was called Bentei Sushi. Now, it has transitioned to Sushi U. We picked up a few items to go as part of a Valentines lunch and oh my, what a nice surprise! Ordered the Spicy Mad Tuna roll, Alaska roll, Dragon roll and Tuna Bites. Each one was well put together, with wonderful flavours. The smoked salmon on the Alaska roll is perfect, the bbq eel on the Dragon roll was crispy and not overpowering. The Spicy mad tuna roll and the Tuna Bites had a good amount of spice that give you just the right amount of kick. Looking forward to going back, dining in and trying some new items! read more

I live 5 minutes away and I freaking love sushi so this was top notch sushi. The foods was so fresh and done so right. The staffs are so humble and sweet. When I go, it's usually quiet which I don't mind because there was only one server on and each time the server was very attentive. It doesn't look much on the outside but you have to let the foods speak for itself. I tried almost everything on the menu and it never disappointed me. Hidden gem of a sushi place. Quality and decent offerings. Located in a lonely strip mall and at the time of review, they've only be been open for 1.5 months! They gave us complimentary miso and cream puff dessert at the end. The spicy tuna rolls are great! Drizzled with sauce. The California rolls are a good size (medium) and the BC roll is substantial (they deep fry the skin). My dad ordered the bento box with sushi and sashimi and they do not skimp at all! This is one of the places where if you had the time to hunt for a good sushi place in the middle of nowhere, you would come to Sushi U. Originally, it was once called Bentei Sushi, but I guess times have changed and Sushi U comes in. What I like about this place is they are willing to give complimentary miso soup and a cream puff for your dessert. They offer bento boxes and also if you want a roll that they did not offer on their menu, they can still make it for you which is great. I like the fact that they have a bento box for those who like to go to the gym. Particularly the U Special Bento Box B which has lots of sashimi, a california roll, salad and also tempura. I would definitely come back here for sure since this is one of those places where they actually know what you want. read more

Whenever I am craving for sushi and we are near the neighbourhood, we will pop by to grab a bite to eat! When I first came here, it was still Bentei Sushi, in fact.. my fiancé ate often at Bentei when he was a high school student over at Burnaby North! Even if it is not Bentei Sushi anymore, the place is still great and amazing for sushi platters! Their specialty rolls are unique too! The best part before was the compliments from the chef when you finish your meal, they give you a piece of their deep fried ice cream to sweeten up your taste buds! Today on the other hand, they must've stopped serving that dessert but the chef was super amazing and gave us some chicken yakitori to nibble on! My fiancé ordered a bento which has a free miso soup included, the waitress was very observant and realized that we would be sharing our meals (I ordered some sushi) that she came and gave me an extra bowl of miso soup "on the house"! It's not much but it was the gesture that really touched me as a customer. I've never had this experience before, they really take good care of their diners! I'm so impressed and the waitress was so cute and sweet. She checked in on us often but also giving us our own time to eat and when she does come over to our table, she always approaches and leaves with a smile! Genuine smile too, not a forced smile.. when you work as long as I have in retail, you can definitely tell which smiles are genuine and which are forced and hers was genuine! My girlfriend and I love to eat sushi and explore the various sushi locations around Vancouver. This little gem we found while we were in the neighbourhood, and let me tell you, this is good sushi. I have never been disappointed with Sushi U when I order the Bento boxes for take out. My wife likes the Chicken Teriyaki Bento and I usually order the Sushi and Sashimi Bento. They always include a few treats such mini egg rolls or fried chicken pieces, etc. The quality of the California sushi roll, spicy tuna roll, Teriyaki chicken and Nigiri sushi as well as sashimi has been consistently good and the portions are decent. Definitely worth the price. The staff is always friendly and the 20 minutes they quote for preparation to pick up time has always been spot on for me. 2 thumbs up from me for Sushi U. read more

Sushi U was chosen as our go to place for lunch recently. We arrived at the destination and found a parking spot near the restaurant a few minutes before its opening time of 11 am, and when seen near the entrance, staff welcomed us to come inside. We (threesome) were shown to a larger, corner table, provided menus, place settings, and then brought some large mugs of hot tea to enjoy while we pondered what to order. It's a small place, clean, neat, and tidy in appearance. If I remember correctly, there was some music playing, but definitely at a rather low volume. The tables are arranged around the perimeter, and most can be moved and re-arranged to accommodate from one and two diners, to small-sized groups. Our server (Jane) was a delight during our visit, and took such good care of us. The food: note: I thought my ordering was likely a little heavy for the three of us, but with it being a first time visit, I wanted to try a number of dishes, and it seemed to work well - with a few leftovers to bring home, but most dishes cleared. Hot tea - a light and flavourful blend, was supplied at no extra charge. -- Appetizers: geso karage (breaded squid tentacles), coroke (breaded potato croquette), ebi (prawn) gyoza -- Noodle: veggie yaki soba (soba noodles, w/mostly bean sprouts and small pieces of cabbage, a few green beans and carrot pieces) -- Teriyaki: tofu teriyaki (deep fried tofu, w/teriyaki sauce, on a bed of bean sprouts and a little rice) -- Donburi: chirashi don (assorted sashimi, on mostly shredded daikon and a tossed green salad, w/ side bowl of steamed rice) -- Sashimi: tako (octopus) sashimi (slices of octopus tentacle, on shredded daikon) -- Nigiri Sushi: aburi sampler ('flamed' nigiri sushi - salmon, tuna, ebi, tai, saba, and hotate, w/special sauces, and spices) -- Roll: California roll -- and two "extras" that our hosts provided without charge: samples of chicken karage (breaded chicken pieces, w/a sweet & sour-like sauce), and ice cream tempura for dessert (a nice touch, much-appreciated). Food preparations were good -- warm dishes, were warm, cold dishes, were cool -- breaded coverings were thin, crispy, and flavourful, sauces tasty, and stocks not greasy or salty, quite 'light' and flavourful -- tofu and noodles were well-prepared - the large tofu pieces so creamy, and the noodles not overcooked -- chirashi don was very good, the ingredients so colourful, cool, fresh, and tasty - and the California rolls as well -- sashimi in the don, and the octopus sashimi, were perfect, so fresh and flavourful, and the aburi nigiri sushi a taste treat, with melt-in-your-mouth goodness -- and the 'extras', well-prepared, and yummy, the ice cream tempura such a nice and 'cool' way to end the meal. Our lunch at Sushi U was a fun, and a much-enjoyed dining experience -- nice, friendly, personable hosts and service, with well-presented and prepared food. My absolute favourite Sushi restaurant in all of Vancouver (and ever). My boyfriend and I moved into the area in December and randomly popped in one night. They brought us delicious aburi sushi on the house and it was so good we ordered it ourselves every other time we went. They recognized us by the second time we went. The food is amazing, the servers are kind (and the service is excellent), and the owner is not only involved but also really nice. The staff spoke highly of him one night because he was making food for all the employees to take home. Not sure where any bad reviews are coming from... we've had a LOT of sushi in vancouver and nothing beats this. Takeout can take a while during COVID but it's worth the wait for sure. read more
