Definitely come here for something boujee I would try the oysters (the first picture - 3 for $9), they were smaller than expected but definitely something i recommend trying at least once. Takoyaki is always definitely a go-to for me, however the pieces my friend are didn't have any in it :( A chopped scallop role is also my go-to order, however this particular one didn't quite hit the spot. I dont often come out to Port Coquitlam so when we were in the area for some furniture browsing, I had to visit Kai for their lunch sets! My mom and I ordered enough for three people because of their extensive menu and we enjoyed every bit of it! We ordered: Sashimi and Sushi Lunch Set - with 5 slices of tuna and salmon sashimi as well as three nigiris, Ebi sunomono, spinach gomae, tempura (shrimp, squash and yam), miso soup and a side salad. The presentation was exquisite as rather than a box, they used small plates on a tray. I loved the assortment of side dishes and the quality of the fish was great! Beef Teriyaki Lunch Set - similar to above but instead of sashimi, this had a huge portion of beef slices (not too fatty) on top of a medley of potatoes, carrots and other veggies. I loved how they gave some vegetables instead of the usual bean sprouts. This set didnt have the sunomono but it came with two pieces of aburi instead which ate really nicely without being too oily. We also got the chicken skewer option over the tempura and this was a little bit dry but not fatty. Mango Salsa Roll - california base with salmon on top and a generous finish of a mango salsa (which contained some red peppers and red onion). I loved the flavour of this roll with the creamy wasabi sauce on top. Chopped scallop roll - this seemed pricey at first but coming to the table, it was a cucumber roll with a mound of scallop on each piece. This was fresh, tasty and the cucumber made it feel not as heavy. Overall, a wonderful place for a meal where at first glance, prices seem high but the quality and portion of food warrants it. I went for lunch and was really impressed. I ordered the crunch roll and a half order of sockeye sashimi. They were both very good. My friend ordered the firehall roll and thought it was really good. My bill came out to $35 for the specialty roll and the half order of sockeye sashimi. So it is a bit on the expensive side. The ambiance is nice, clean and casual. They do have seating for small groups. It was very busy at 1 pm. The customer service good and the food came out at a descent time considering how busy it is. If you're in the area this place is worth checking out. I would definitely come back for dinner when I have more time. I would try some other specialty rolls and the tempura. read more

Love this place so much! It's a bit more affordable than going to Miku or Minami in downtown, but it's the same quality, if not, better! Fiancé and I took his bff for a sushi birthday dinner here recently, because it's one of our favourite sushi spots. Despite eating here numerous times, it still takes me forever to decide what rolls to get cause they all sound delicious. We ordered: Salmon Sashimi (full order), Prawn Tempura, Spicy Ebi Mayo, Salmon Oshi Sushi, Fire Alarm Roll, Giant Bomb Roll, Rainbow Roll, and Fremont Roll. If you're in doubt or need suggestions, I highly recommend everything we ordered on this visit! Yup, we finished it all between the three of us. And yes, they all taste as amazing as they look. Now let's be completely honest about the prices: they're higher than most of the sushi restaurants nearby, but there is more than sushi here! We ordered the beef tataki, curry pork katsu, and the Kai house roll - just to get a taste of everything. Beef tataki: on point. I'm still drooling thinking about it. Pork Katsu Curry: they knew we were sharing it so they brought an extra bowl of miso soup so we both had one (a small gesture that goes a long way!) it's also presented well! Also, two whole cutlets! Decided to come here for dinner after window shopping in the area and had a not so great lunch at this Korean restaurant. Been here before and also recommended this place to a few people. I believe it's one of the better Japanese restaurant in the Port Coquitlam area. Found parking right in front, free parking for patrons of the pop plaza, so that was good. We were greeted and promptly seated by the friendly staffs when we walked in. Inside the restaurant is quite spacious; nice comfortable spacing between tables, very clean, and that nice casual Japanese theme. Here were the food I ordered; 1. Hot sake. Damn, it gave me a little buzzed, maybe I am becoming soft. 2. Real crab sunomono. Okay Japanese restaurants should really stop using this canned or packaged dry ass shredded crab meat. They honestly tasted nothing like crab meat or food. Failed! 3. Oyster motoyaki. First time trying this here. A few pieces of chopped oysters baked with the usual mayo. Not so wowing for the price and the oyster shells... are they being reused? Failed! 4. Appetizer tempura. Nice soft crisp outside and clean taste inside. 5. Beef tataki. Very tasty; fresh, tender and buttery. Probably one of the better beef tataki I had in a long time and went great with the sake. 6. Assorted sashimi. Very fresh and on the menu it indicated all the different fish you are getting so no surprises. 7. Foie gras nigiris. They were buttery delicious! They literally melted in my mouth. Loved how the way this was done and honestly I had good foie gras, but this was one level up. 8. Madai, ikura, chopped scallops, blue fin tuna, chu toro, toro nigiris. They were all fresh, the toro and chu toro were very fresh and buttery, thank youuuuuu!! 9. Kai roll. The portion was quite big, a bit saucy for me but most people would like it this way. Overall, the friendly and attentive services from the waitresses were good. The food was tasty and delicious besides the sunomono, had to walked off the alcohol a bit outside, yep no drunk driving. If you are in the area, give this place a try if you haven't. This place is located at the back of all the shops and restaurants in the new Port Coquitlam plaza, if you find Walmart you'll find this place because its right beside it almost. Kai is becoming one of my new favourite go to sushi restaurants. I try to visit every time I'm in the area. It can get a little pricey, but it's worth it for both the quality and quantity. Their lunch box sets are great value and their sashimi is super fresh. I also usually get the salmon oshi, and mix up my order for the special rolls. Sometimes they are hit and miss based on the price point. I also love that it's one of the few restaurants what serve oyster motoyaki, it is AMAZING and I get it every time. Easy to get to Ambiance: Second we walked in I was impressed with the furniture, set up & plate settings. Something you would find downtown, but is in our neck of the woods! I would say this is a more higher end sushi restaurant (based on the decor) Food: Oshi was delicious Food was good. The rolls were a bit on the looser side and did fall apart. Price: Def on the pricier side, but you could tell that's like be the case as soon as you walked in. Service: Good. No complaints. Came here for a large family dinner and ordered a bunch of stuff - lots of great variety on their menu. They have everything from regular rolls and sashimis to special rolls to aburi and oshi rolls. On quality and fancier sushi restaurants in the Coqitilam area, this is probably the best one you can find. Probably not a day-to-day place because prices are on the higher end, but you get what you pay for. Everything we ordered had been really good, from sunomono, sirloin beef tataki, sashimi salad, rolls, specialty fish and oshi sushi. The special rolls are very creative, different than what you typically get at other restaurants. I would recommend this place if you're in the area and are craving for a different mix of flavours. Newly found favourite Japanese restaurant in the Port Coquitlam area! This place is runned by Koreans and the service is outstanding. Very attentitive and kind servers. There is a great selection of dishes to choose from with some daily sashimi specials too with some fishes imported from Japan. We ordered the omakase sashimi, orange scallop, ebi oishi and dragon roll. Loved all 4 dishes. Sashimi were fresh and there were some unique fishes in the omakase selection. And they offer to fry you shrimp heads too! Yummy! The orange scallop is my favorite - very refreshing with the orange slices and who wouldn't love fried scallops!? Welcome to Kai's Japanese Restaurant a new addition to growing PoCo. This Korean-run sushi restaurant is large, clean, nicely decorated and tucked away near the Wal-mart shopping complex. It's a bit pricier than most casual sushi places but the quality is definitely there. We had the seafood salad, salmon Oshi, dynamite roll, and some nigiri. All came in nice plates, and first thing I noticed was how fine the nigiri cuts were - a sign of excellent sushi knife skills. The seafood salad in particular was very good with generous portions of tuna, salmon - unlike what you would find at most places which tends to overload on iceberg lettuce and dressing. When I first thought PoCo, the last thing that came to mind was great sushi but this place was a pleasant surprise. If you're out in PoCo, it's worth checking out for lunch or dinner. read more

Services was fast and friendly and the place was fairly hip and clean. Only real critiques other than the price was there were no dinner bento boxes and also the tempura veg appetizer was boring , subpar to most other Japanese restaurants and much more expensive. There was one small piece of broccoli though which I haven't seen at many pa,des recently so kudos. All in all not your everyday grab and go but a solid for a nice lunch or weekend dinner. read more

Everything is so so good and fresh here. It is definitely pricier than your regular go to places. It is around $60 for 2 adults if you are wanting to leave full in my opinion. However, very worth it as the presentation and quality is superb! The dragon roll there is amazing, there's pineapple on top which makes it different from the other places which is basically just a california roll and unagi on top. The staff needs to be trained on customer service and how to treat customers. Our food had hair in it not once but twice. They did change the food and got it made again but coming up with an excuse saying all kitchen staff wear hat so no way it could happen, I am guessing they meant we put hair in it. Port Coquitlam doesnt have a lot of good japanese restaurants. There are maybe a handle of them that are even worth venturing back to over and over again. Situated in the relatively new neighborhood of Fremont village, kai sushi brings something that is missing in poco and that is a fusion Japanese restaurant that boasts delicious aburi sushi. If yall know miku, they are well known for their flame torched sushi. Though not to the same quality, kai does bring a very good alternative to driving downtown. They have more than just aburi sushi, with good sashimi selection and grilled meats, you will definitely find something that you will like. Staff are nice, ambiance is great and the pricing is decent. If you're looking for a good spot for sushi, kai is a great choice. read more
