We found Sushi Village by accident and decided to give it a try. The restaurant itself is very aesthetic and wasn't busy when we arrived, which was a plus. We only eat cooked rolls, and we made sure to ask before ordering, but one of the rolls we received turned out to be raw. Our waiter seemed a little hesitant about replacing it, though he eventually did. Both rolls--the Golden Tiger roll and the lion king roll we ordered--were good. 1 Star - Disappointing Decline in Quality and No Customer Service I've been a frequent customer at Sushi Village for years, coming in at least once a month because I loved their generous, hearty sushi rolls that always left me satisfied. Tonight, some of the rolls were shockingly skinny! Barely any filling, mostly rice, and they looked like mini versions of what they used to be. It felt like they were cutting corners big time to save on ingredients. I couldn't believe it, I even compared them with other rolls I ordered, and these were easily half the size. Frustrated, I spoke with the manager. I pointed out how small the rolls were and how this has been a noticeable change since the past 50 times we've ordered sushi. He basically said there was nothing wrong and that he didn't want to do anything about it; no comp, no remake, not even an apology. Just a dismissive attitude that made me feel like my loyalty meant nothing. Sadly, this used to be my go-to spot, but with shrinking portions and zero customer service, I won't be back. Sushi village is elite. I have tried to many other sushi and hibachi places that just do not hold a candle to sushi village. Their rolls are superior to everything else I've tried. I frequent sushi village mostly to-go. When dining in, the wait staff are nice and attentive. No issues there. Food is usually good but the last roll I had with tuna was not so good. Tuna was fresh, but was chewy. I eat a lot of sushi around town but this night was not that good. My main complaint and reason for the 3 stars is the music they play in the restaurant is annoying, can be on the loud side, and distracts from the dining experience. Every song sounds like some sort of foreign version of Celine Dion, over and over. Corny music. Obviously a favorite of the owner. At times, on the sushi bar side, the family children are playing with their electronics in the restaurant. One evening, the sushi chef was yelling aloud at the other chef. Very clean very polite and super attentive while dining in!! The food was prepared perfectly nothing was drowning in syrup and sauce. Cooked to perfection!! 10 out of 10!!! I'll preface my review by saying that this place is pretty far from my house and I try to avoid 280, so it will never be my go-to sushi restaurant. BUT. Their party trays are where they shine for me. My daughter requests sushi for almost every birthday, and there aren't many places to have sushi catered, especially at a reasonable price. I have ordered several party trays from Sushi Village over the years for birthday parties and game nights. They have a nice variety to accommodate everyone from adventurous sushi eaters to sushi noobs. Presentation is always nice, the sushi is fresh, and the price point is great. I always order for pickup as soon as they open, and although I expect to wait since they've just opened and have to make a sushi platter, it's never not been ready. They've also been kind enough to make substitutions for my eel allergy. One time I showed up to pick up a sushi platter that I had accidentally ordered from their Crestwood location. I felt horrible, but they prepared the order for me in record time and were so sweet about my stupid mistake. read more

Sushi Village is a solid choice! It's not the best sushi in town, but it consistent quality and among the least expensive. The lunch special is hard to beat: three rolls for about $12! This location is particularly my favorite because they still serve a nice salad with a delicious dressing as free appetizer. The location in the NE side instead switched to silly/gross crackers a year ago or so. I minded that! A major Plus of this location is that the fish doesn't come to the table freezing cold! I came here with friends for lunch prior to a pool day. We ordered a variety of rolls. They were all very neatly made with a great rice-to-filling ratio. Amateurs will include too much rice, but the Sushi Village chefs are pros! The lunch special makes Sushi Village especially worth it. As of Fall 2022, you can get 2 rolls (6 pieces each) for $9.95 or 2 rolls for $11.95. The servers are very nice, and so are the checkout staff with whom I have interacted when getting takeout. My favorite order is a salmon roll, bagel roll, and California roll. Call me basic, but I absolutely love the creaminess of avocado, cream cheese, and salmon in my sushi. In my opinion, for the casual sushi lover, Sushi Village presents great value for some yummy sushi, especially at lunch time! I am, and will remain, a regular. read more

We ordered through Grubhub- 2 spicy tuna rolls, steamed Gyoza, and a dragon ball. My order on Grubhub said Dragon BALL, but when it was delivered, I realized I was charged for a Dragon ROLL. The roll was $13.95. I couldn't eat the roll because it had a certain type of fish in it. So I called them. The girl on the phone admitted freely that she had rung it up wrong. She offered to have me drive there and get the correct item. When I mentioned the price discrepancy, she said they were the same price. My husband drove there (after paying the delivery fee and tip for the driver to have our food DELIVERED. when he got there, they asked him if he brought the roll to give back. He said, of course I didn't. Nobody mentioned wanting the roll back on the phone. She then claimed that she had called me to tell me to bring it back. No she did not. After trying to charge .y husband for the replacement (he refused), he finally got the correct item and left. When he got home, there was a receipt taped to the to go box that had a.price of $8.95. They over charged me by $5! The girl flat out lied to me! Very poor customer service. And why do they want the roll back? We're they going to resell it? Gross. read more

Well, after several years of eating at Sushi Village and enjoying good sushi, I'm done. I went in for lunch today (I eat there about once a week) and when getting ready to sit down the music clipped the "F" bomb along with a host of explicit lyrics. I mentioned it to the waitress and she asked if that was okay. I told her no and if this is what they're doing now. She said no and would change the station. No change. I left. My goodness! What a wonderful discovery! I had no idea this place existed. We accidentally ended up here after discovering our original lunch spot was closed. Sushi Village 280 was there to save the day! The staff was very inviting and courteous. I was able to basque in a serene atmosphere while I enjoyed my meal that was served quickly. There was an option to sit outside but we chose to dine inside because it was superbly serene. I ordered Shrimp Tempura with avocado inside layered over with yum yum sauce, eel sauce and sweet chili sauce! My taste buds were tap dancing. Not sure if I've had sushi this yummy and satisfying in a good while--maybe the best I've ever had! To give my sweet tooth some soothing I ordered vanilla mochi ice cream drizzled in chocolate sauce and it was divine! The portions were perfect, not too much, not too little. I was a regular customer until recently. I ordered from Grub Hub, the restaurant confirmed my order and that it would be delivered shortly. Poor Grub Hub arrived to a CLOSED restaurant that had a handwritten sign stating they are closed on Monday (even though GH account didn't reflect this change and they still were accepting orders) --- their fault for not updating their hours of availability on GH. The next day I tried to get a refund for my $55... GH cannot assist after 24 hours, and the restaurant was COMPLETELY unhelpful and in no way was willing to help refund my money or credit my order. So basically they just took my money. When I called, they just kept saying "I cannot help you, you have to go through GH, we have no record" --- even though they didn't even bother asking for any info on my order. Tried sushi village for the first time last night, and it was pretty good! I started with the fried gyoza. They were a little cold when they got to the table, so that was disappointing, but they were tasty and I loved the dipping sauce that came with them. We were given complimentary salads with ginger dressing, and those were pretty good. The dressing was creamy and had the perfect amount of ginger taste. My friend ordered the Money Bags appetizer, and they were adorable, cream cheese filled wonton sachets. Light and crispy. I ordered the Play Girl sushi roll and the eel and avocado roll. Both were delicious. The Play Girl roll was Huge, and had shrimp tempura, tuna, yellowtail, jalapeños, cucumbers, and was wrapped in pink rice paper. It was topped with eel sauce, spicy mayo, and masago- YUM! I had a glass of Josh Chardonnay with my meal that was decent. Next time we go, I'd like to try the build your own hibachi...that sounded interesting! Kind of a little secret over here it seems. Every time I go, there are only a handful of people here, but it's some of the best sushi I've ever had and one of my go-to restaurants here in Birmingham. I've only had their hibachi once, and it was very good. It's also cool that they allow you to customize your hibachi as much as you want. The fried rice and vegetables are very good. The meat was tender and well seasoned. The only downfall is that they don't have grill seating like most hibachi places do have though, so keep that in mind if you are planning an outing like that. My main go-tos are clear soup, an order of edamame, and a crunchy spicy crab roll. The crunchy spicy crab roll is literally the best sushi I've ever had in my life. I could eat it almost every day if my life if I wanted. The lion roll and the pink lady roll are also good choices as well. The only downside I can say about this place is that the seating is a little congested and you might feel as though you might sit close to someone you might not know, but as I've said, I've never really seen a packed house anyway, which is quite surprising considering the overall quality of food here. After delivering our food, he never checked back with us. After the two guys at the next table left, we were his only customers. I had the Udon noodles with tofu. The portion was significantly smaller than it used to be, with very few vegetables. The waiter did not know that it came with a choice of soup or salad. My friend had the fried rice with chicken. We came here with a Groupon and a bunch of kids. My husband and l order sushi. It was pretty good. Some of the kids got sushi, some got stir fry. We all liked our food. The service wasn't the best for a week night. We waited fairly long to get our food which is never great when you have kids because they are inpatient. I ordered chicken hibachi and the Manhattan roll from Sushi Village 280 today. I ordered through the delivery service, DoorDash. I was pleased to see the brown paper bag was stabled ensuring that my food is secure and relatively safe from any germs during the delivery process. This is a good step to prevent covid that I appreciated. Now let's get to the food! The chicken hibachi was very filling and I loved the variety of vegetables. There's not many hibachi places that have brussel sprouts in their vegetable blend so that was a great addition. The chicken was a little under seasoned, but the complimentary yum yum and soy sauce helped out a lot. My favorite part of the meal was the sushi. The cream cheese and fish merry very well together and I enjoyed every bite. The rice was perfectly cooked and the roll had the right amount of crunch. Overall, sushi village has been one of my go-to spots for a hibachi dinner. Did I mention this is the kid's size? Really a bang for your buck.
