Visited this joint before the Covid crisis. I was a study abroad student from California in desperate need for some sushi. This was the perfect little shop to get some decently-priced & not terrible quality takeaway. It satisfied the craving, therefore this place is worthy of four stars, relative to the type of store this is (takeaway, quick). The menu was extensive, and the service was quick to assemble my role for a quick lunch on the lawn in front of the area. There was a good variety of sushi available, as well as different bowls and noodles. Definitely will come back if I ever need a quick craving satisfied. The atmosphere and interior of the store is not extravagant, but it gets the job done as a sushi takeout spot. Super fresh fish, and I'm sure some of the better sushi at reasonable prices in London. Don't let looks deceive you - what looks like a slightly run-down hole in the wall place actually has huge slabs of fish that look (and taste) really fresh. The prices are a little bit pricey for lunch (I think they just raised their prices), but for the quality, it's worth paying a little more. You can order sashimi or nigiri a la carte and they have a pretty wide selection of fish (maybe 12-15 choices), you can get a chirashi bowl, or sushi rolls. The nigiri usually runs about £2-3 per piece, and the sashimi is about £3-4 for 2 pieces, so it's not necessarily a cheap meal if you end up getting 6-8 pieces of nigiri or sashimi. I ended up getting a salmon and avocado sushi roll and the pieces that were cut from the roll were pretty generous in size. The rolls were tasty, but they do have a little bit of mayo inside, which was a little strange -- the salmon inside the rolls weren't huge pieces either. Either way, it was still good and relatively filling. The 2 pieces of of tuna nigiri and the yellowtail nigiri were great, especially the yellowtail because it seemed really fresh. I'd definitely come back here again and get a sashimi platter or the deluxe chirashi bowl; the smaller chirashi bowl mainly had crab and shrimp which didn't seem like it would be as fresh as the fish. I saw them cutting huge slabs of fish that looked really fresh, so I'd stick to that. You can dine in or get your food to take away - the inside isn't super renovated with the linoleum floors and metal tables, and the plastic trays for sushi that make it look like it came from the supermarket. However, just ignore all of that and go for the fish. I probably wouldn't come here on a business lunch if you were trying to wine and dine a client, but it's a great place for a casual lunch or to get something to go. Atari-ya is probably the best sushi you'll get outside of Tokyo [sic]. Yes I am able to comment as I've been up at 4am to queue outside Daiwa Sushi (at 5am), Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo for the freshest and best sushi in the world. Anyway, back to Atari-ya, just for some info, they're actually a fish monger to a lot of high class restaurants in London such as Nobu, so you know the fish is going to be of a certain standard... The great thing is at Atari-ya, you don't have to spend a load to get the best, it is incredibly cheap, even cheaper than the sushi counter at Japan Centre. All the sashimi they have is superb, however, my only recommendation (aside from recommending the whole menu!) is that you upgrade from "Medium Fatty Tuna" to their "Fattiest Tuna", both is good... but the fattiest is worth that little extra. Despite the lack of seating, and the general small size of the restaurant, it does have a stand up bar in case you're out of luck with grabbing one of the two tables. All this brings back fond memories of being seated inside a cramped sushi bar on a cold damp morning in Tokyo... so for that it gets the full five stars. read more

Oishiiiii!! I used to live near West Acton...the best thing about living that far West was access to the amazing chain Atariya for sashimi/sushi/Japanese grocery goodness. This is the same chain...but for sushi rather than groceries. I approooove! I have to admit, I didn't really look at the menu...I just listed my seven favorite nigiri sushi and sat down with a nice warming cup of miso soup. However my friend ordered some of the maki sushi...and they were goooorgeous. Seriously, the unagi roll is the nicest maki-zushi I have had in London. You should all definitely try: - Hottate (amazing, melt in the mouth scollops) - Amaebi (the small, slimy sweet shrimps - delish!) Not bad: - Hamachi (I can't remember what this is in English - maybe yellow tail?) - Unagi (I am a bit of an unagi snob. I like it served warm with a dribble of the sweet soy sauce. I was originall going to a nearby sushi place that was closed and by chance lucked out by stumbling across Atari-ya. I got the Super xl chirachi, which at first seemed a bit pricey for a place like this -- it's a hole in the wall with sparce seating consisting of beat up picknick style tables and faint smell of harsh chemical cleaning detergent -- but as I dug into the enormous serving I realised that it was a bargain at (£16) , only I should probably have settled for the smaller one. The place isn't really much to look at and I would recommend it for takeout unless you're a fan of previously mentioned barebone interior and the ambience of a storage container. The food however is an entirely different matter. It might be lacking in presentation -- even if I did enjoy the sight of a wasabi smiley face the size of a ping pong ball -- but in terms of straight up quality of fish and preparation of it, Atari-ya makes up for all its little flaws with seemingly little effort. The melting fatty tuna alone is among the best I ever had and together with the generously distributed pieces of ebi, sea urchin, variations of roe, amazing salmon (which I'm normally not a super fan of) and more it really comes together as a great deal. This is no fuzz sushi at it's best and I'm pretty sure I'll be back a lot in the future, even if it's a little out of my way. Edit note: After recently discovering many better sushi places around town, not actually have been back to Atari-ya more than once, and still mostly remembering it for that harsh smell of cleaning detergent the first time around, I have lowered my score from a 4 to a 3. The fish is of good quality and priced reasonably, but not worth travelling across town for. If you're in the area and want a good quick bite it's definitely a good option but otherwise you could do better. read more

The sushi here is undoubtedly very good. It is a no-frills restaurant reminiscent of a fishmongers, and can get very crowded at lunchtimes with little room to move past people waiting to order without hitting the people inside eating. I would recommend ordering in advance as they always say it will be 30 minutes to wait usually they are a lot quicker than the stated time, however they do have a lot of new staff currently and they have recently messed up our orders meaning that we had to wait an extra 15 minutes whilst they made the platter for us. I like that on quiet days you can watch the chefs prepare your food and that every time I go into Atari-Ya I can never work out if I feel that I am more in a fresh-smelling chippy or a fishmongers that serves food. read more

I struggled to share this little gem of a place because it's so tiny, and don't want hordes of people running in and taking up the precious table space, but what the heck, it's almost Christmas and I'm such a nice person. My friend introduced me to Atari-ya a week ago, and since then, I've been back 3 times. In one week. That's how much I love this palce. You don't come here for the ambience, you come here for lovely and fresh Nobu-quality sashimi and sushi (apparently Atari-ya supplies sushi to Nobu). I recommend the spicy tuna roll, eel and avocado roll, spicy yellowtail rollpractically everything on their menu really. I'd steer clear of the yakitori though, it's really nothing to shout about. The best part? Their prices are extremely reasonable. Best sushi I've had in the UK so far, but I feel there is even better out there. We ordered quite a bit in two different rounds. First round we went with 2 rolls: spicy tuna, & salmon avocado, and 5 different sashimi (3pieces each): salmon, yellow tail, fattiest tuna, uni, eel. Both of the rolls were very tasty. To date the best tasting spicy tuna I've ever had, and also the smallest spicy tuna I've ever had. It cannot be all great I suppose. The salmon avocado was also very good. The sashimi was interesting. It was my first time having Uni and I've decided it is not for me. I prefer my seafood to have at least some consistency. I can understand why people like it though, I suggest giving it a try, but not if you don't want to pay the almost 10GBP price tag (most expensive sashimi on the menu). The yellow tail was top notch. The salmon was 2nd best I've ever had (Fat Salmon in Philly still holds that title). The eel was eel, love it, yet I can never understand why nobody ever serves it without eel sauce. The fatty tuna was awesome. It looked like a raw cut of pork with all the lovely streaks but boy was it good. I could eat that all day long and die happily. Round 2 we went for regular tuna sashimi and salmon sashimi, more spicy tuna and a Chirashi bowl. The Chirashi bowl was good, I was especially impressed with the rice, sticky, delicious and worked perfectly with the assortment provided (shredded crab, crab stick, 2 types of roe, egg, pickled something, 3 salmon sashimi, shrimp). The experience definitely makes me want to visit their other locations and their retail locations. I think that Atari-Ya would be 5 stars if they had slightly larger portions, especially as the pricing isn't overly extortionate, and the quality is definitely worth a try.. read more

I woke up this morning with a massive sushi craving which left me looking for all the closest Japanese restaurants within a one mile radius from my work. I started getting slightly worried when every other search result was either YO Sushi or Wasabi. I wanted something slightly more authentic -- and slightly more edible. Yet again, Yelp came to my rescue. Atari-Ya is very small, but I called in an order for takeaway and it was ready by the time I got there (about 15 minutes). I had the Spicy Yellowtail Ura Maki (inside-out roll) and a Salmon Avocado maki, and found both to be reasonably portioned and priced. They were also delicious and both came with the option of either being garnished with sesame seeds or tobiko. Now my office smells slightly of soy sauce, but it was totally worth it. Definitely coming back for more when I get the chance -- or when my sushi cravings hit again which, let's face it, is a regular occurrence. read more

I second, third or fifth all the reviews that say this is the BEST sushi in London. I would even go as far to admit that it's SO worth the battle of the Oxford Street crowds to eat this sushi! It's a small place that mainly does takeouts (2 tables inside, 5 outside) and they take there sweeeett time (around 30 min wait) making your sushi but it is SO worth the wait. The price is SO CHEAP and the sushi is incredibly fresh. Tip- even though it's not on the menu, they do hand rolls and can do an amazing scallop roll (my favourite!) Go and enjoy Londoners, but save me an outside table ;) read more

Best takeaway sushi in London by a wide margin. Atari-Ya serves excellent fresh sushi that is remarkably affordable (most rolls are in the 2-4 pound range). The staff is all Japanese and though the service can be a bit haphazard at times, the quality of the sushi is top-notch. Highly recommended. Note for lunch the wait for the sushi chefs to make your rolls can be lengthy---try 30-40 minutes if you get there much after 1230pm, so you're much better off getting there by noon or even better yet---phone in your order. There isn't much in terms of seating so plan on taking your sushi to go. Location in Marylebone is handy, just off Oxford Street. read more

Things are amiss here in sushiland. The last three or four times we've eaten in/taken away the fish has tasted old. And seriously--old-tasting, raw fish is the thing of my worst, stomach-heaving night terrors. The staff turnover is also troubling. Gone are all the sweet Japanese girls giggling at my husband's Japanese and calling out orders in their shrill, girly accents. Replaced by non-Japanese speaking Europeans, who don't know the difference between chutoro and otoro. So much for my top-quality, cheap sushi fixes in Marylebone. FRESHNESS That's the word that comes to mind when to describe the food. The urchin was surprising and great, the clam melted in my mouth, the salmon was FRESH, eels/salmon rolls very good. If you're looking for great sushi then this is the place to go. The sushi is amazing here, it's so tasty, so fresh, so mouth wateringly good that it's a must for any sushi lover! You will be so surprised how inexpensive the sushi is as well-it's amazing value for money. They also sell various soft Japanese drinks and sweets. The only downside to this little sushi bar is how small it is. There are only two tables and four chairs in this small cafe which is fine if it's quiet and you don't have to wait for a seat otherwise you'll have to stand and wait or grab your sushi as a take away. However, don't let this deter you as it's the best sushi i have yet to find in London and the staff are so sweet and helpful. I love it! read more

Oh, Atari-Ya. I wanted to like you. I really did. So many other reviews were glowing. The gals who took my order were so sweet and friendly. The wait was really long, but the chefs were having fun and the staff were all-around smiling and this made me not care to much about the time. But then I got my food... Something not good was up with my sushi (I had a CA roll, salmon roll, & spicy tuna roll). My California rolls were like nothing I've ever seen or had before - and that's not a good thing. They were just odd-tasting. The shade of the tuna seemed a bit browner than it should have been, but I initially put this down to the spicy seasoning of my spicy tuna roll. I was, however, wrong. I ate a couple, and didn't feel very good about it. In the end, my body told me that the tuna was not for eating and I couldn't finish the rest as it just tasted off. Apart from the fish being a bit dodgy-seeming, for some reason everything here seems to be slathered with mayonnaise. To me, sushi is about clean and fresh flavors. This experience was more like eating a heavy mayo salad sandwich filling in rice. Not pleasing and not pleasant. 1 star for the food (the salmon roll wasn't exciting, but it wasn't bad), and 1 star for the very good service. Unfortunately, I don't think I'd give Atari-ya another chance. read more

It's more of a take away than an eat in restaurant though there are some tables and it follows a canteen format where you ask for your food, then sit down to eat it (or take it away). Be prepared for a long wait while your sushi is freshly prepared, but be equally prepared to be blown away by how tasty it is :) read more

There's nothing fancy about the restaurant and but it's a great place to pick up a quick sushi meal. I'm a sushi/sashimi lover and its hard to find reasonably priced, good sushi in London. I'm a sushi addict so Atari-Ya thanks for being my London connect and satisfying my fix without putting me into financial woes. 4 stars for value and reserving the 5th because I'm still new to the area. This is the first sushi joint that jumped at me on Yelp because I could go multiple times a week. It is relatively small probably even for London standards but I've been to Seoul Bakery too and I'm getting the impression that this is the norm for London Asian joints :) As for speed, they have about 3-4 sushi chefs so they are cranking and I haven't had the same 30-40 minutes wait issues. However, my internal clock is still off so I'm not exactly eating at the same time as everyone else . Quick Tip.. If you are going to be there near closing time, make sure to order ahead of time because they may not take the order. read more

I've been looking for Atari-ya for a long time. And, admittedly, choosing a busy Saturday night to give it a first try was probably not a strong strategy. But, well...THE MAKI CRAVING NEEDED TO BE ADDRESSED. So, y'know, Atari-ya? Game on. It's a tiny tiny spot on James Street; yes, there are a few two-person tables, but it really reads as a take-away. I stupidly called at 6PM on a Saturday night. Orders wouldn't be ready for 90 minutes. Erm. Ok. So...I asked what they had as pre-made rolls kept in their fridge. Chicken teriyaki rolls, shrimp tempura roll, spicy tuna roll. Not what I would have normally opted for, but I was HANGRY after battling the crowds of Oxford St. and 90 minutes was an impossibility for my blood sugar. Totally reasonable 4.50-5 GBP/roll. Not rice-laden. And this is for pre-made rolls; I can only imagine that fresh would be, well...so much superior. Especially in the case of the tempura roll which suffered from the fact that it was not eaten immediately. The surprise of the night for me was the chicken teriyaki roll. Liking a) fish and b) raw fish means that I would never have ordered this under other circumstances. But: it was delicious! The char was strong on the chicken, and the meat was tender, and the teriyaki wasn't sickly-sweet. Not conventional maki, but it did (wait for it)...mak-i me wish I had more! (GROAN. DESERVED). Had an appointment to catch up with a friend over dinner and she set a few criteria's. Healthy, quick and has to be centrally convenient for the both of us. I suggested Atari-ya at St. James Street and that was our destination. The city branch functions more as a take away and there are only a few seats for dining in. I wanted to go for the Deluxe Chirashi but was veto-ed and in the end we went for a selection of rolls. It took easily half an hour for them to prepare it and I was really hungry and scratching my head as to why. Later I found out that this is the norm, I guess I just didn't know. So we finally received our platter and it was just so beautifully presented. One bite in and all was forgiven. Slightly warm sushi rolls and the rice seasoning was flavoursome with the right amount of acidity to it. Ingredients or toppings were fresh and succulent. This is how sushi should be and I wished that more places make it like this. I especially enjoyed the spider roll, Negitoro hosomaki and the spicy fried yellow tail. The bill came up to £11 per person and I think it is good sushi at great value. I'll be coming back often and I'm still eyeing that deluxe chirashi. read more

This is definitely an odd little place. I think they are more geared towards take away food than dine in. There is very little seating and the staff are not very helpful. You have to order at the register and if you are lucky they will remember to bring it to your table. The miso soup is served in disposable coffee cups and was pretty unremarkable. As for my two pieces of fatty tuna nigiri and rainbow roll they were very good. Super fresh and the fatty tuna melts in your mouth. So if you are looking for good solid no frills sushi at a decent price then this place is pretty darn good. read more

Highly recommended by a friend for their fresh seafood and the fact they supply seafood to lots of high end Japanese restaurants. So after shopping, we went to take away two sushi sets, black cod sushi roll, and 8 pieces rainbow rolls. The fishes are fresh, simple but nice, even their soy sauce taste good and doesn't have that annoying bitter taste like those non-sense wasabi chain ' s soy sauce. I may be biased as sushi where I live in this price range is an absolute disaster, and I couldn't afford the more expensive sushi joints in London (nor here at home), but I consider this one of the best sushis I ever ate. Sure, it looks like a 90s cafeteria, the plastic trays look like they're from crap sushi delivery places and the "grass" they use as barriers between the rolls is just sad. But show me a better place where I can stuff my face with top grade fresh sushi for 20 quid and maybe I'll lower my rating then. read more

The spider roll was a disappointment. I've been craving it since Glasgow (see previous reviews) and it was soggy and just not nice. Also the takoyaki was also quite soggy. But as my friend pointed out, they don't really have cooking faciities and the sashimi and normal raw sushi was wonderful. It is still one of the freshest sashimi's I had but it's autumn, and it's chilly. I need some hot food. I usually love sashimi so don't judge me! All I can say is that I hope all the posh restaurants are not serving us the same fish they served here for 4 times the price (worry not posh eating folks, fish like meat and veg also comes in grades/ bands, so this is the same supplier but could be a "lower band" of fish). The fish at Atari- Ya is fresh and the uni was still creamy and not too fishy (litmus test), but I've had much better sushi in London- though at 4-5 times the price. The rice could be of better quality though as well... it didn't tasted of much... However, having said that; for the price they are charging at atari- ya; the fish is sublime, of a decent size and good variety (look online, for some reason the menu at the shop is v small, though you can prob pick from the sushi fridge/box thing). Let's put it this way. If you are going to spend 20 squids stuffing yourself with sushi in London, this is one of the better places to do it. Do call in advance to make the order- you can tell them when you are coming to collect then you don't have to queue and wait for them to create your heavenly luncheon/ dinner. This place is so delicious! I'm so happy I discovered it. It's a tiny little restaurant with maybe 4 or 5 tables inside. I ordered an eel avocado roll, shrimp tempura roll, spider roll, and salmon avocado. My favorite was the eel avocado but I would recommend them all. Atari-ya has no frills but they don't need it. Been trying to find a go to sushi spot in Marylebone and still testing out places. We tried Atariya Sushi Bar on the touristy St. James Street to give it a shot. Food: We ordered two spicy tuna rolls, one avocado, one cucumber, one eel avocado and one spider roll. The menu has the classics, but is minimal. The rolls were all good. Drinks: We purchased one green tea bottled drink and one perrier. Price: 28.30 GBP for two people which is very reasonable. Ambiance: This place is narrow with zero ambiance. It's more of a take away place with a few tables inside if you want to sit quickly to eat. Service: The service is friendly when you order at the counter. Would I go back? Tuna and salmon rolls cost £1.70 each and you get six pieces, not three as you would in most other sushi places. Eventually, I was persuaded to drop by one afternoon, and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the raw fish, and even more taken aback by the price. This is probably the cheapest sashimi place you can find in Central London 3 pieces of fresh salmon for £1.50. I dare you to find me another place offering such good value, at quality freshness too! I've yet to try the sushi, altho I'm keen to check out the rainbow roll, california maki and spicy tuna. So we finally received our platter and it was just so beautifully presented. One bite in and all was forgiven. Slightly warm sushi rolls and the rice seasoning was flavoursome with the right amount of acidity to it. Ingredients or toppings were fresh and succulent. This is how sushi should be and I wished that more places make it like this. I especially enjoyed the spider roll, Negitoro hosomaki and the spicy fried yellow tail. I love this place...a must everytime i visit Selfridges. It looks slightly dilapidated but the sushi is always fresh and super affordable. I've never gotten the bowls but the sashimi and the rolls have been perfect every single time. read more
