    Sushi Joy

Oishiiiii!! I used to live near West Acton...the best thing about living that far West was access to the amazing chain Atariya for sashimi/sushi/Japanese grocery goodness. This is the same chain...but for sushi rather than groceries. I approooove! I have to admit, I didn't really look at the menu...I just listed my seven favorite nigiri sushi and sat down with a nice warming cup of miso soup. However my friend ordered some of the maki sushi...and they were goooorgeous. Seriously, the unagi roll is the nicest maki-zushi I have had in London. You should all definitely try: - Hottate (amazing, melt in the mouth scollops) - Amaebi (the small, slimy sweet shrimps - delish!) Not bad: - Hamachi (I can't remember what this is in English - maybe yellow tail?) - Unagi (I am a bit of an unagi snob. I like it served warm with a dribble of the sweet soy sauce. But this wasn't really up to scratch here.) @JB...you would love this place! It will fill up your sushi baby happily.

Baked cod uramaki. V tasty with a hoisin (sweet) like sauce. 6 pieces

Sushi very fresh and very quick service. No frills if you want to sit in. You have the choice of three or four single tables alongside the sushi bar close to he door or two tables at the back next to the fridge and the loo. Loved the rolls. Will def be back. It's always busy with takeaway orders.

    Super XL Chirachi

I was originall going to a nearby sushi place that was closed and by chance lucked out by stumbling across Atari-ya. I got the Super xl chirachi, which at first seemed a bit pricey for a place like this -- it's a hole in the wall with sparce seating consisting of beat up picknick style tables and faint smell of harsh chemical cleaning detergent -- but as I dug into the enormous serving I realised that it was a bargain at (£16) , only I should probably have settled for the smaller one. The place isn't really much to look at and I would recommend it for takeout unless you're a fan of previously mentioned barebone interior and the ambience of a storage container. The food however is an entirely different matter. It might be lacking in presentation -- even if I did enjoy the sight of a wasabi smiley face the size of a ping pong ball -- but in terms of straight up quality of fish and preparation of it, Atari-ya makes up for all its little flaws with seemingly little effort. The melting fatty tuna alone is among the best I ever had and together with the generously distributed pieces of ebi, sea urchin, variations of roe, amazing salmon (which I'm normally not a super fan of) and more it really comes together as a great deal. This is no fuzz sushi at it's best and I'm pretty sure I'll be back a lot in the future, even if it's a little out of my way. Edit note: After recently discovering many better sushi places around town, not actually have been back to Atari-ya more than once, and still mostly remembering it for that harsh smell of cleaning detergent the first time around, I have lowered my score from a 4 to a 3. The fish is of good quality and priced reasonably, but not worth travelling across town for. If you're in the area and want a good quick bite it's definitely a good option but otherwise you could do better.

The sushi here is undoubtedly very good. It is a no-frills restaurant reminiscent of a fishmongers, and can get very crowded at lunchtimes with little room to move past people waiting to order without hitting the people inside eating. I would recommend ordering in advance as they always say it will be 30 minutes to wait usually they are a lot quicker than the stated time, however they do have a lot of new staff currently and they have recently messed up our orders meaning that we had to wait an extra 15 minutes whilst they made the platter for us. I like that on quiet days you can watch the chefs prepare your food and that every time I go into Atari-Ya I can never work out if I feel that I am more in a fresh-smelling chippy or a fishmongers that serves food.

I struggled to share this little gem of a place because it's so tiny, and don't want hordes of people running in and taking up the precious table space, but what the heck, it's almost Christmas and I'm such a nice person. My friend introduced me to Atari-ya a week ago, and since then, I've been back 3 times. In one week. That's how much I love this palce. You don't come here for the ambience, you come here for lovely and fresh Nobu-quality sashimi and sushi (apparently Atari-ya supplies sushi to Nobu). I recommend the spicy tuna roll, eel and avocado roll, spicy yellowtail rollpractically everything on their menu really. I'd steer clear of the yakitori though, it's really nothing to shout about. The best part? Their prices are extremely reasonable. We ate like little piggies (witness: edamame, miso soup, salmon, tuna and yellowtail sashimi, salmon & avocado roll, eel & avocado roll) and paid about £13 each. Bliss.

    Qype User (gloomy…)

First time here, wanted to eat in. The waiters rushed me to order my sushi, I only skimmed through 2 mins to order tuna and salmon maki £1.80 each. sashimi is £1.80 for three slices. Great value for high quality food but can improve with customer service.

I went to a few places, and finally got seated at Atari-ya. With 45 mins left before the movie and a hungry belly, we managed to chow down some really yummy Japanese food. If we were to say purely based on food quality, I'd give it a 3.5. Food quality is very fresh, but the presentation /cut of fish is a bit "fast-food-ish", not top notch. Based on price/quality/quantity comparison, I think it's a perfect Japanese place for a hungry belly without breaking the bank. However, the most impressive thing is their fast and quality service. Water fill? no problem. more ginger? Ok coming right up. Ponzu sauce? Right away! Bomb!

The price is much higher than other takeaway sushi, including Waitrose's Sushi Daily. It was fine and did admittedly taste fresher and better than Wasabi and Itsu. The portion of fish was also more generous in terms of the salmon to rice ratio. Ultimately though I thought the rice was just...very bland. I like sushi rice to be seasoned with rice vinegar and sugar and this was not. It fulfilled my sushi craving for lunch but I wouldn't get it again. The curry came quicker than expected so I assume that some of it is microwaved, but the food tasted good and the price was cheap so I don't expect the freshest but it can be misleading for some. They have started to do texting orders with that you can text them your order and collect it from the shop which is good to do if you are in a hurry.
