Nice to have a more-upscale dining option for Bainbridge. I was pleasantly greeted by staff opening the door, and I proceeded to the bar. Madison splashed up an tasty Old Fashioned to start. Great service at the bar top. For snack time, I had the Classic Filet, medium rare, with a sweet potato, preceded by a salad. Excellent fare. It was difficult to choose from the menu, as I saw other delicious food preparations pass by. I met the legendary co-owner Sam at the bar. He belted out a show quality Happy Birthday for a guest! The building sets the tone perfectly. This was a public library built in 1938 in what I would call the Neo-Federal style as so many post offices and town Halls. Every town loves a beautiful old building, but nobody really knows what to do with it when it's no longer a library or a post office or whatever, and it usually ends up either being scrapped or thrown away. Witnessed the countless number of beautiful Victorian train stations that have bit the dust over the years. Usually too much out cry these buildings go far away or get knocked over. This however, is a beautiful repurposing. I started out with an appetizer of baked French onion soup. The soup came out perfect with a homemade crouton on top and smothered and Swiss cheese, it also came out in a traditional French onion soup crock. The soup was very mild, not overly peppered as so many are these days. The onions were of mild variety, but not too sweet. It made for an excellent soup. Something else to shout about is their delicious bread. Their used rolls are homemade, you can tell that they were made in a muffin pan because they are indented and shaped like muffins on the bottom. I assure you they are the best yeast rolls. You will have anywhere outside of Paris France. Despite the fact, they have an extensive wine list, I stuck with sweet tea, because I am in Bainbridge Georgia. To the wine connoisseur, I don't think anything will be out of place, but I don't drink that much wine anymore so I can't really say if it's a first rate wine list or not. But all the usual suspects were there and the prices were reasonable. I opted for the surf and turf, because it had several things from the menu that I wanted to try the shrimp on the surf and turf are giant. They came out, freshly braided and fried still hot. It's obvious that they did not come out of a bag, they were breaded on site cooked on site and delightful. The steak was about 10 ounces of New York strip cooked, medium rare. It was hand cut, and did not come out of a bag, it was a little tough, but then again that is a New York strip. If I could've substituted the ribeye, I think that would've been a good choice. The vegetable kebab was part of the plate and I loved it. It was my side item. It was not overdone. It was not tough. It was not the great vegetables, it was everything that a vegetable kebab should've been and was grilled perfectly on a nice bamboo skewer. I also had the delicious side salad. With blue cheese dressing it was an absolute wonder of a salad. Once again, nothing came out of a bag. To finish the evening off, I had caramel cheesecake, also homemade, a good baked cheesecake with a nice thick, crumbly graham cracker crust. The caramel sauce with sea salt was homemade the consistency of it was thick. It did not come out of a squeeze bottle, it was layered down by hand while it was still hot, a very nice touch. Worthy of note, the owner came out and seated me. I had called ahead and found out that they opened at five, I told them I would be there and wanted a table for one at 501 and I got just that. The place is really nicely done pretty not overly fancy perfect for large groups. They have a large staff that takes very good care of you. My server was around just about the entire time, just bringing out my food checking on me making sure I had plenty of ice tea. It was a wonderful experience a couple of tables over from me. Someone was celebrating their birthday. The other owner came out and he's saying to them, this guy should've been on Broadway. He's got a wonderful set of pipes. read more

Based on the reviews and ratings, I looked forward for days to eating at Susie & Sam's to celebrate my birthday. I left very disappointed, and I won't return. I made the mistake of hoping the environment, service and culinary creativity could match a formerly GREAT Bainbridge restaurant: The American, which lost its original chef, changed ownership and closed. We ate at The American when the original chef was there - and it was one of the top 5 restaurants I've ever eaten at. They had a heart and a soul. They weren't afraid to fail. They celebrated Southern cuisine with fabulous creativity. Susie & Sams is a straight-up steak house. It's not creative or unique in any way. Here's what struck me... It's extremely loud, the lights are so dim guests were using their phone lights to read the menu, my server pretty much disappeared except for cursory visits to the table, they clearly want to turn tables quickly. I wasn't even halfway through my dinner salad before bringing my Surf & Turf. I was a party of one; therefore I got ONE roll. The steak wasn't really that tender and had a vein of toughness running through it. The server at the table next to me asked the guest if they wanted dessert - and she wasn't even half done with her steak. The music wasn't really audible as the evening progressed. Worse to me, it seems to have no heart and soul. And for me, that's the kiss of death for a restaurant. You cannot survive without it. People come here because ... I guess it's sort of hip, it's the place to be seen, showing up maybe demonstrates some level of success to others. I don't know. Here are my unsolicited suggestions for improving diners' experience: 1. Slow it down. My server was not memorable for any reason. She could have been - but maybe just didn't have the time. IDK. Monitor your guests. Meaning, if they haven't finished half their salad, wait to cook the food - so that it's served hot. 2. Serve hot food. The steak wasn't hot. The sweet potato was maybe the best thing on the plate, as I just had it plain with nothing on it - but dipped it in the au jus served with the steak. That combo was good. The solitary roll was not really warm - and I couldn't detect the yeast in it. The salad wasn't hot (whew!!) but the croutons were soggy. No crunch whatsoever. The blackened shrimp and the sauce that accompanied it... THAT was tasty. Shrimp wasn't hot. 3. Encourage your servers to display their charm, humor and inner beauty. I found mine to be professional, capable and cold and uninterested in me as a person or customer. Her eagerness was aimed at wanting to leave the table. 4. I know you're a steak house, but when I called to make a reservation, I was told that you could accommodate me well and creatively, as I am vegan. I know what you're thinking... I got what I deserved! But wait! First time I went to The American in Bainbridge the chef said they could prepare a vegan meal - and that they did! It was memorable for all the right reasons! It was creative. It went out on a limb. It was fantastic and it was highly satiating! Conversely, my server at Susie & Sams, had no clue - and had no motivation to find one! Nor did she inquire with management whether they could deliver anything creative. "We have salad. It has iceberg lettuce, cucumbers and tomato. Or French Onion Soup... Or the vegetable kabob." 5. Turn up the lights, turn up the music. Put tapestries on your walls to absorb the sound. 6. Don't be so cheap. One guest should get 2 rolls. Two guests should get 3. When you provide cutlery, include a spoon. Put low-profile candles on every table so that guests can see each other's beautiful faces. The couple sitting next to me... the woman had a beautiful, stylish dress on - that would have danced in candlelight. She would've been complimented by everyone - and would have remembered the night for all the right reasons. 7. Innovate, take chances, serve other food. There used to be an Italian restaurant in our town. Turns out they had a GERMAN menu for German food. It was great. A huge surprise. (It was like In-N-Out's secret menu or something!) I'm not recommending that - but take a chance. Create a few vegan options and promote them creatively. Why shouldn't vegans enjoy your restaurant? Offer other great options (OK, maybe not just vegan) something else... an amazing white cheddar and gruyere and bacon macaroni and cheese. Baked polenta with beautiful and flavorful sautéed mushrooms, heirloom tomatoes with onion and garlic, a little red wine reduction sauce. You could kill it! My nursing-home bound loved one wanted to pay for my special dinner as a birthday gift - and I gratefully accepted. I didn't have the heart to tell him the truth. Anyway, I do wish you the best. Susie and Sam's is the bomb. This is my second time here and I have yet to get to an actual entree. I've made it through drinks and apps but ended up so full I had to say no to a full meal. I have sat at the bar both times and bar keep Emily rocks. Attentive, pleasant, knowledgeable, and just plain fun. I've had the grilled shrimp, crab claws, calamari, and a salad. The sauces are excellent and complement the accompanying app superbly. I did find out they are all made in the kitchen with fresh ingredients. Thanks Emily. They have a nice wine selection. While the liquors could use a little upgrading, Emily makes the most of what she has and makes excellent drinks. The ambience is great. Marble bar with nice stools and built-in bar foot rest. Louis Armstrong playing in the background, massive windows, chandeliers, and wood floors make you feel warm and relaxed. Oh, I did force the bread pudding down. A couple of bits and the rest has made the ride home for breakfast. Yes, it's worth that miserable feeling of being stuffed. Make the trip! You won't be disappointed. P.S. Been to Susie and Sam's multiple times, and have had a variety of experiences, none of which involve bar service. The service is ALWAYS excellent and they've always been so nice. For starters we typically get the fried mushrooms or crab claws and they're good, but never GREAT. Everything is very fried and lacks flavor. Never been too impressed. For dinner, I've only ever had the ribeye, and it's been severely okay. The steak seems under seasoned, relying heavily on the homemade steak sauce served with your meal. Could use a little more salt content. The sides are good, and the salad is always good. My first experience, the waitress mistakenly switched the cooking temp on my wife and I's steaks, so mine was overcooked, which was not my favorite. The restaurant has always been busy and the interior is nice, comfortable, and well decorated. Overall, I recommend the restaurant, but there is definitely room for improvement with the food. read more

Extremely disappointed tonight. I came here for my birthday specifically for a birthday serenade and everyone at the table kept telling the staff it was my birthday. We even put it in the reservations that it was my birthday. My husband even went out of his way to let one of the staff know and they said I would get one. I got nothing while all of the other tables got a serenade for their birthday celebrations. Someone from our party got their food cooked wrong. We spent a LOT of money tonight. Upon reading multiple reviews on Susie and Sam's, we pulled the plug this past Saturday and made the 45 min run to Bainbridge from Tallahassee to see for ourselves. Visually appealing from the outside, they have taken the former library and turned it into a classy restaurant. Made reservations on Resy for an early 5:30 dinner and surprised how full it already was (reservations are in your best interest, but you can eat at their bar if you failed to plan ahead). Greeted and assigned a table by Susie, our server introduced herself and we were off to a great dinner. A note on ambience. The restaurant is mostly one large dining room (it does have additional dining in an adjacent room) with mostly 2 person tables along the walls with larger tables in the middle. 2 person tables are compact and closely spaced so if you want elbow room, take 3 people or more and get a table. With high ceilings and a hard wood floor, the noise level is moderate and challenging if you want a quiet conversation. Fabric Sounddown would go along ways to help mitigate sound. We started with an appetizer of Calamari with a warm marinara dipping sauce. Lightly fried, crisp and tasty. It would be nice to have a lemon wedge on the platter instead of having to ask for one or maybe have the people bringing the food out ask the diners if they want lemon as it may be a while for your server to circle back). Wine was ordered and we accepted the offer of a decanter. On reflection it just added to minimal space available on the small tables (decanter, your bottle of wine, yeast rolls (superb), Appetizer and plates, multiple glasses, you get the picture). Our server made it work with some shuffling. Salads were crisp and cold. Cracked pepper or even shakers were not available. When asked, they got to the table after the salad was consumed. We ordered the 7 oz filet and the Porterhouse. We like our steaks btw rare and med rare and that was exactly how they were cooked. Kudos to the server and the folks on the grill. They have this dialed in. We had the mixed vegetables and they were also superb; crisp tender and a great flavor that will keep you guessing what they seasoned them with. Neither of us could finish it all. We passed on dessert as it would have been too much. We greatly enjoyed dining at Susie's and Sam's and look forward to dining again there in the future. It IS worth the trip from Tallahassee. read more

Just had a wonderful dinner at Susie and Sam's , they are located in the historic library in Bainbridge Georgia. The attention given to the guest by both the staff and the owners are so incredible. As you walk through the doors and approach the Hostess Station you are greeted and told how appreciative they are that you have chosen to dine with them. Our server Madison made us feel so welcome. The food was delicious and prepared exactly as ordered. If you have not visited them it is well worth the drive from Tallahassee. Drove up from Tallahassee to enjoy a delicious meal, as we have missed Marie Livingston's since it closed a few years ago. We enjoyed the potato skin appetizer, and the drinks were fantastic (I recommend trying the pecan old fashioned). Steaks came out perfectly cooked, and seasoned. But the star is those rolls! I wish I could have eaten a dozen of them myself. We will definitely be back. Service was top notch and attentive without being intrusive. What an amazing place! We've been here several times and most recently for my wife's 50th birthday. The food, especially the steak and shrimp, are to die for. You are treated like a high end restaurant should treat you. Sam will sing for you on your birthday or anniversary and Susie will always ask you about your experience.
