Ask any local for the best burgers in town and you can be sure that Goodmans will be among the names you get. And it doesn't stop there. Unlike your usual hipster places they don't just sell burgers, but actually have a full diner menu on offer. Starters, Soups, Sandwiches, Steaks, Salads - you name it. While the place may be a bit hard to spot from the outside, it just screams American Diner on the inside. The owner has been collecting and decorating his store with authentic diner decorations from all over the US and there is even a real, working Wurlitzer music machine. Speaking of the owner...  his name is Marko Gutman (hence the diners name). I first read about his story in a local newspaper article and it was quite impressive. He basically scraped all of his money together and sold his car and bike to fulfill his lifelong dream of owning an American diner. He's very dedicated, a nice and interesting guy to chat with and you will usually meet him when you visit the place. But, enough with the blah blah, let's get to the good part: The food. Like I mentioned earlier, they very likely serve the best Burgers in all of Salzburg. And I'm not just talking about the Salzburg the city. Their highlight of the (burger) menu - and also what I order most often - is the Goodmans Burger. Black Angus beef with all the works... including bacon, eggs and their great home made barbecue sauce. If you don't fancy that combo you can also "customize" your own beef or chicken burger. All burgers come with nice and crispy home made fries and are served on something that actually deserves to be called a burger bun btw. Unfortunately I haven't gotten around to give the rest of the main courses a try yet, but I will soon, hopefully  (the burgers are just too tempting). What you must try however is their signature desert: The Donut Burger. It's a Donut served with Nutella, crispy cornflakes and fruits. Tastes as wonderful as it sounds weird when you first hear about it. Have it, just trust me! Downsides? Well it's the City of Salzburg, so you can expect somewhat higher prices than in rural areas, but if you're used to your usual tourist places, prices are actually on the fair side. Regarding the Black Angus Burger: it's 19.90 Euros including fries. Last time we were there my girlfriend had a Beef Burger with blue cheese, avocado, tomato and onions (+ fries), which was easily as good at about half the price (~11 EUR). So choose wisely! Bottom line... my experiences with Goodmans so far: A+

The noise was awful as we were only a couple of feet apart. The other two tables of two next to us also were grimacing. In rooms this small I wonoder why not just make it all communal family style dining as couples have a miserable time. In the other room there was a party of twelve and then a few other smaller tables. Our food arrived in 5 minutes from ordering, so obviously out of pre-cooked batches. Pablo had the asparagus ravioli, a massive portion. I had pork, again a large portion. You will never starve in Austria! Food was A-OK. We ate and ran.

I've ate here during the Mercedes G-Class tour of Austria and I find the restaurant "employees & most locals" are so rude against anybody who are not Austrians or Germans. Especially if you are an American! Oddly they are not friendly to American visitors dining at their local hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Even the waiter asked me if I had money to pay for my dinner which was about $17 euros. Are you kidding me? They're lucky I didn't sued them. I'll just let it go in this review. I'll give a two star rating since I liked their food and it was delicious. The meal I ordered was prepared with perfection. I just don't appreciate the bad attitude and the poor judgments they have when Non-Austrians/Germans are visiting this place.

A hotel without an on-site restaurant can be a mixed blessing. It can be inconvenient, but it can…read morealso lead to pleasant discoveries elsewhere in the area. The latter was our experience during a recent trip to Salzburg where we'd booked a quaint hotel that did not have an on-site eatery. We had taken our adult children and grandchildren to Germany and Austria to visit some of the multitude of Christkindlmarkts, including those in Salzburg. One can only have so many bratwurst, pretzels and cups of Glühwein so, after exploring the markt at the famous Mirabell Gardens on our first evening in town, my wife and I stole off on our own and discovered the Sky Bar. The name "Sky Bar" as represented on numerous advertisements around the midtown area is a bit misleading, as it's much more than just a bar. Situated on the sixth floor of the Imlauer Hotel Pitter, it is also home to a very nice restaurant as well as a lively bar. With food available in both settings, we chose a table in the bar area for our post-markt munch. A glass of local Riesling started things off, and the bar had one with a "trocken" or dry finish. "Halb-trocken" or, more recently, "fine-herb," indicates an off-dry wine while "sü" (seuss) is sweet. While my wife enjoyed a small salad, I opted for their beef tatar. Properly prepared, it came with a caperberry buried in the seasoned, ground meat topped with a fried quail egg and accompanied by a chutney of balsamic and shaved onion. Delicious! In fact, so delicious that the fellow at the next table who had just finished his own tatar saw me enjoying mine and waxed rhapsodic about how delightful it was. He wasn't wrong. The next night, we decided to save our appetite so we could enjoy a complete dinner rather than nibbles. Certainly, we visited some sites and strolled through some of the city's markts but dinner time found us again ascending to the sixth floor and making our way to the bar area. This time, our entrees included venison for my wife and a boar chop for me. We'd both had venison before - including during a previous trip to Austria and Germany - but I had never had boar. Though our server said his English was "not very good," he was able to understand my question about whether the boar would have a gamey taste, and assure me that it had been farm-raised so it would not have a game flavor. A little research showed that boar is often considered a slightly lighter alternative to pork, and indeed it was. A bit less fat but just as much flavor and, properly cooked, tender and juicy. As was the venison, with only a hint of game flavor. Our third and final night in Salzburg brought one more trip to the Sky Bar for a farewell glass of wine and a last look at the city from our sixth floor perch. The facility's location may not seem to fit the definition of a "sky bar" but it's plenty high enough for Salzburg. Guests who step onto the outside patio can see the lights of bridges spanning the Salzach River, Fortress Hohensalzburg which sits watch over the town, and dozens of other sights. One might also marvel at those hearty folks who opt to sit outside and enjoy their drinks and dinner in freezing weather. But hey, there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. If you're looking for a change from stereotypical Austrian fare, we highly recommend the Sky Bar at the Imlauer Hotel Pitter.
