Great cheese shop with other snacks. They had a wine tasting counter but did not try any. Most memorable thing about walking in was the lady on staff. Not only did she make great recommendations on cheeses but was also nice enough to cut them into cubes for us. We were staying at the Inn and did not have a knife or cheese board with us. We went back to the room, started up the fireplace and had a makeshift charcuterie tray with a nice bottle of wine for lunch. read more

We were visiting family members in the quaint town of Sutter Creek and during our exploration of the few shops that were open, we came across this cheese shop! What luck for us! Since we are cheese enthusiasts, we couldn't help but spend a long and leisurely time checking out their locally made cheeses with the humorous names. They also had a wine tasting bar, but we were only focused with the cheeses on display. It was fun taste testing a number of interesting looking flavors and trying to narrow our purchases down to three. The specialist lady staff member was very knowledgeable on their products and spent quality time with us answering questions and giving recommendations, even though the shop was pretty busy. Besides cheese, I found other fun products throughout the store, such as Miller wines, assorted spreads, crackers, breads, utensils, gift baskets, snacks and other hard to find items that would make nice gifts or souvenirs. So we visited the cheese shop on Open House which stated online that all stores would be open until 9pm and was greeted by Lara (we love her) and settled in for cheese and wine tasting....as usual she made us feel welcome.....there was another worker lurking in the background....not friendly at all and kept coming back and forth almost like we were going to steal oh I don't know the cheese samples then when we were done, my husband asked to buy a couple of cheeses and Lara looked at the gal, called her Jesse and asked could we buy some cheese......her response......no. Ummmmm really??! Who turns down a sale??? At this point it's 6pm and Jesse is turning lights off.....what happened to all the stores being open until 9pm? Yeah ok, we get the hint. I can't say enough good things about this place, it is a place I always make sure to visit when I come see my Mom in Sacramento. It's our mother/daughter tradition!! I love that you can sample ALL the cheese before you buy. They also have a great jam/jelly selection. Last time I was there I got a strawberry/basil jam, this time it was apricot and horseradish. We came in here on a super hot, middle of the week day and seemed to be the only people in town, let alone this small shop. As one of the very few shops in town that was open on a Tuesday, we were so, so excited to take refuge from the heat. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted by the lovely owner. We decided to go for the wine and cheese pairing were not disappointed by any of the wines or cheese. We loved this small shop, and we loved getting to chat one on one because we were the only people around. We bought two cheeses to bring home with us, but we were so so so grateful that we got to try so many before picking which ones to bring home. My son and I visited Sutter Creek. He loves the quaint and charming atmosphere. He's visiting from the east coast and wanted to visit the area before he left back home. The day was gloomy and quite a bit of places were closed. Not a busy time at all but still enjoyed our short walk around Main Street. He was looking for coffee and we stopped to look at the menu posted on the outside. We proceeded to walk in and immediately greeted (not a warm/friendly greeting) by an older woman who stated they were closed and walked all the way to the door to ensure we walked out. She essentially herded us out the door and as she was doing so I noticed two other ladies at a table who appeared to be eating. We didn't see a "closed sign" and when she walked us out she didn't lock the door from what it appeared or place signage to indicate they were closed. I truly felt a strange feeling that our brown skin caused her reaction. She was not warm and friendly and truly didn't have to walk us out since we had just entered and already by the door. I venture to this area often and have never felt out of place due to my skin color. This area is not known as diverse and this woman definitely made it a point to make us not feel welcomed. I won't be back just because of that. Know how to treat potential customers. I'll visit other places there but not this Cafe. read more

And some days those feelings consist of a La Brea sourdough baguette, a package of La Quercia applewood smoked prosciutto, and a giant wedge of Sartori raspberry cheese. They may or may not also include nibbles of your dining companion's Ford Farm Wensleydale with cranberries. The Sutter Creek Cheese Shoppe is located toward the end of Main Street in the historic downtown district. It smells a bit funny inside, but the employees are welcoming and you can't go wrong with free samples! There were so many cheeses, cookies, crackers, spreads, and wines from which to choose that I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted. I almost left empty handed, but the girl who helped us suggested a mild white cheddar, and that's how I became acquainted with BellaVitano. The cheese was so tasty that we decided to skip a restaurant and have a little picnic on their patio. With the help of my mother's Swiss Army Knife I was able to open up my speck americano and the sealed cheese. I broke bread with my hands and layered on the meat. I'd been craving a simple, European-style sandwich for forever and this hit the spot. I didn't even bother to slice the cheese. I just took a bite of my carbs and protein and then topped it off with a mouthful of cheese straight from the block. An elderly man approached me while eating and jokingly (I think) said "You shouldn't do that. It's not healthy. We've all been there." ... Sir, I don't give a shit. After eating much more than I should have, I tottered up to Miller Wine Works for some samples and was happy to find that the tasting fee isn't just waived if you buy a bottle, they also comp the sippy cups if you're a patron of the cheese. read more

Definitely a "must stop" on the small Main Street. As soon as you walk in, they give you a sheet of paper with over 50 cheeses listed for you to try. I was a bit overwhelmed at first. However, the lady behind the counter was quick to come to my assistance and offer suggestions on what I can try. They have a wide variety of cheeses from different countries. I tried about 8 difference cheeses; all for free. I have a feeling you can try as much as you like. They have small containers with cheese cut into cubes and they hand you a toothpick with the cheese attached to try. I also tried the bacon jam...yummy! It is basically a spread made of bacon and caramelized onions. I left with three different cheeses, some bacon spread, and a baguette. The total came out to about $40. read more

This place knocked my cheese-lovin' socks off! This is the cheese shop that John Cleese should've walked into (a joke for fellow Monty Python fans). We found it randomly when we were in Sutter Creek in December 2010, it was a new shop then. We entered like kids in a candy shop and promptly drooled at their ridonkulous selection. The besty-best thing: the lady gave us all the samples we wanted! You even get a little sheet so you can note what you just tasted and what you'd like to buy. Cute store but... There were four of us in our group and we were the only people in the store. We didn't even know you could cheese taste since it looked like all you could do was purchase it. If you love cheese, then this place is heaven. The shop is small but the selection of fine cheese is quite extensive. You can tell that the owner(s) have a lot of passion for what they do, it's wonderful. The customer service here is amazing. We were expecting a taste of maybe 2 or 3 cheeses, what we received was more like 15+. The gal who helped us was so easy going and friendly, handing us little bites of heaven on a stick at a steady pace and taking the time to talk about the types we were trying, even sharing her personal favorites. I can't remember the exact names of the cheeses I loved the most, probably because my eyes glazed over with the very first taste. Phenomenal selection of cheeses. Over 80 kinds. Parisian man owner. He tries to figure out what you like and let you sample the kinds that you'd like. I entrusted Abby to a friend as I had to spend quite a lot of time inside figuring out what I wanted. When I was out, the said friend said, "You were there for a long time, they must have great cheese." All true. I picked out three rare kinds that are French cheese, different and all pungent. No this is not the same as France but this will do. It's likely the best cheese shop in the west coast, but you would not know it unless you came here! read more

I am basing my review on the cheeses. The woman who helped me started off very nice, but, then turned snippy when I asked for another sample of the cheese that I planned on purchasing. Excellent selection of cheese. I purchased the roasted garlic cheddar. OMG. I could eat the entire block in one sitting. I tried one that was a coconut type and it was good, but, not one that I would purchase to eat. After perusing other cute shops and boutiques in Sutter Creek (and there are alot of them), we stopped in at the cheese shop to pick out some appetizers so we could go home and put our feet up. Well, I don't know 'jack' about cheese, but it didn't seem to matter to our enthusiastic hostess - she handed us a list of SIXTY different cheeses she offered to let us taste! Growing up in Minnesota, I'm practically an honorary cheese head, but here was not my familiar and boring colby. No IDEA what to pick!! No matter, the owner caught my glazed look and offered to suggest a few - WHEW! This lady knew her stuff and explained and chatted about each cheese without making anyone feel like an idiot (unlike some of the wineries where if you don't know that the wine 'hangs off your cheeks' you're terribly gauche)! She gave great suggestions about how to use each cheese as well as giving us the basic information - this was was great in salads, that one was super on a bagel, the other one cuts easier with a cheese cutter . . . The list of cheeses gave us the name, the type, what animal's milk it's from, and where on the globe it comes from: Beehive Buzzed Cheddar - pasturized - Cow-Utah, Drunken Goat from Spain, Tin Tern Cheddar w/chives and shallots from Wales, and Wensleydale w/cranberries from England (we purchased this as one of our several choices - YUM). After tasting several, we began to fear our husbands would be sending out a search party, so we made our choices, got a recommendation on crackers to serve with the cheese (a very thin wafer with a touch of lemon zest that actually seems to 'cleanse the pallet' when you're tasting several cheeses - it worked!) and headed back to home base to share with the menfolk. The owner of the shop is a lovely hostess and the experience in her tiny shop was a pleasant surprise on a cold and dreary January day. Sebastian is a boss and his daughters ( I assume) are great. Most cheese tastings are places that have only a few types available for sampling and the owners grudgingly stare at you when you take more than 3 samples. Not at Sutter Creek Cheese Shoppe! Sebastian hangs out behind the counter with like 50 tubs of sample cheese, shoving toothpicks in your face while telling you about the cheese you are eating. In my mind, Heaven is something like this. Anyways, whatever he is doing is working, because we walked out of there 50 dollars deep in cheese. read more

My family recently bought a cabin in Sutter Creek less than a few miles away from the downtown, so it was more or less fate that I stumbled upon this place. We walked in with the door creaking and my heels clicking on the floor of the building only to NEVER be greeted or even acknowledged by the big angry "employee" sitting in the back starring at his computer screen. Okay, I am a local and have been meaning to visit the Sutter Creek Cheese Shoppe for some time. Well, I finally went in the other day with my daughter, and, WOW! There is every kind of cheese you can imagine. And you can taste to your heart's content! The people who work there are very nice and helpful. We especially enjoyed the different goat cheeses. They even have sheep cheese. We ended up buying a few cheeses, but I am not done. It might be dangerous living so close - I am going to go broke on cheese! read more

We went with friends to Sutter Creek this Christmas season. On first impression in this shop, there isn't much to see. Then you go back to the cheese counter and check out the list of cheeses! The list is a two-column single-spaced page. It seems there samples of almost every cheese. I tried a Black Diamond cheddar, a white sharp 5 year old cheese. Oh, my! And then an Irish Porter - mild cheese with a dark Porter beer laced through it - mmmmmm! Bought both. And then the goat Brie was creamy and wonderful, but I held myself back. Otherwise I would go wild, just like 'Animal' does in the The Muppet Christmas album (with John Denver)! I like the friendly and knowledgeable staff. A delightful place to get cheese. read more

When one of the gals in my group of three suggested we wine taste/ cheese pairing we were directed to the front of the store. Visited with a group of women in June (haven't reviewed until now because I thought the bad memory might fade) but this shop was the low point of our weekend in Sutter Creek. The woman a the cheese counter was pleasant and helpful and we had planned to do a wine tasting at the front of the shop but found the employee there to be sullen and rude. We decided to move along and find another tasting room to spend our time and money. I see there have been positive reviews since our visit-based on those I MIGHT give them another chance but this was a very unpleasant experience during a really special weekend away. read more

Excellent place, sort of like the opposite of the Monty Python skit. It has cheese. Lot's of it. And it's all really good. And the staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and generous with the samples. If you are in the area and like cheese, you should infiltrate this place of purveyance and negotiate the vending of some cheesy comestibles! All kidding aside, this is the best place for fine cheese I've ever been to, or at least it's fair to say there are none better. They definitely earned my repeat business. read more
