Historic general store in the town of Volcano It was a warm day on the first day of August so we stopped by the Country Store to buy some cold drinks. Inside you will find things and stuff of all sorts from picture frames to toiletries to groceries. The atmosphere is so nostalgic with lots of character... I love it. It is a historic general store and it was pretty cool. The Country Store is also the town's Visitor's Center. It boasts of the longest-running general store in California having been in continuous use since 1852. Wow, that's an amazing record. The store fits in perfectly in the quirky town of Volcano. The sweet lady behind the counter thanked us for stopping by. There was only one thing I was disappointed about... that we did not order food here (we had lunch at the St George Hotel). My friend and I went to Volcano several years ago and wandered into the general store looking for something to eat. Now this is a historic Gold Rush building probably 150 years old which looked every bit it's age so it felt adventurous to order food. The Country Store in Volcano is a step back in time ... way back. We had fun browsing. A little hard to tell if some of the items were for sale or simply pieces of nostalgia. Debbie Dunn, the owner, was very friendly and made sure we had the map/guide to all the historical spots in Volcano. We only bought a couple of post cards. If we are ever in Volcano again, we may stop here for lunch which is offered on one side of the store. read more

Debbie is a sweetheart with energy of an Energizer Bunny. Burgers are good, sandwiches are good, and they have local beers on tap. You can have your food brought over to the cute park across the street if you'd like. Interesting historical over there too. Take a look at the flooring when you walk in to the right, the original floor is still in tact, a little worn and wavy. Very cool. The other side of the store (to the left) are goodies and nostalgia. As you can see, people love this old timey place in historic Volcano, and the delightful, gregarious owner Debbie who is there Thursday through Sunday ( it's open 7 days a week ). Check out the Valentines event there on Friday if you can and be sure to stop by if you're passing through. It reeks with atmosphere and you can get a great burger. A lovely unique country store with the ambiance I enjoy, no bells and whistles just pure down home country comfort. Debbie the store owner is the sweetest person you could ever want to meet. She is great in helping you with directions on a multitude of topics, from what to see in the area, to where the best upscale restaurants are located. I regret that we didn't eat here, we just didn't have enough time, but we did buy supplies and get some fantastic advice from the delightful and kind Debbie. What a sweetheart. This place is wonderful and well worth a visit - all of Volcano is super cool, but this store is a standout. It's the oldest continuously running general store and market in California and possibly in the West. It's very cool and an amazing history lesson, really interesting to walk around. We will definitely be back. Debbie is so friendly and helpful - she told us about a good lake for fishing that only locals know about, and we'd never have found without her instructions. The Volcano Country store built in the 1800's is truly wonderful. The owner Sally is a good cook. I go there for the ambience, hamburgers, and chicken sandwiches. (Not necessarily in that order!) The prices are great. I know of no other place anywhere around here that could beat her prices. She cooks her burgers and chicken in a old stone oven. The store sells basic grocery items, e.g. milk, bread, etc. However, I go there for the food! This is a place you definitely don't want to miss if you are anywhere in the area, or taking a day trip! This review is really for the entire town. If you are going to Daffodil Hill, you should stop at Volcano for a few minutes, visit this charming store, and marvel at an authentic gold rush town. It is a store on one side with a wall full of glass bottles, tins, and souvenirs, with the other side being a restaurant. There is a parking lot behind the hotel, park there and walk around. Most of the buildings are historic, and have markers/signs on them. We plan on going back. read more

This is my favorite place to get a bite to eat when I visit Volcano and I have eaten at every restaurant. I always get the steak sandwich and a beer. As noted in other reviews the food is cooked in a stone oven. There is nothing fancy here but the store really captures the feel of Volcano and you will feel welcome. We had the most beautiful and memorable day visiting Daffodil Hill and topping it off with a fab steak sandwich. Debbie the owner is SO nice! Shortly after we came in this lame person came in a ordered FOURTEEN sandwiches. Well, Debbie was working like a little jack rabbit making sandwiches and grilling our steaks for our sandwiches and other sit-down customers on this really cool stone grill right in the back of the little cafe. She was so apologetic. No worries, we didn't want to leave this historical and wonderful atmosphere anyways and were making conversations with other customers too. Well, it was well worth the wait! Our sandwiches were simply delicious and made on homemade French rolls to boot. We'll be back to visit this wonderful piece of California history AND Debbie at The Country Store. My friend also ordered the steak sand and was also pleased with it. Loved the atmosphere. Only one person working, I assume the owner. Cute little story, very old and filled with a lot of things. The dining area was cute and the woman who worked there was nice. The Bro and I both had the double cheeseburger which was very tasty. She makes them on a grill in a fire pit/ oven. The Plus One had a ham and cheese sandwich that he liked. The kid enjoyed his corn dog. The strawberry milkshake was just okay.
