    These waffles smelled delicious!

SO WHAT EXACTLY HAVE YOU BEEN DOING OVER THE PAST EIGHT YEARS? The first time we attended Suwanee Fest (no beer), we were very disappointed because at that time it was very small with limited entertainment and the parade was a bust. That was approximately eight years ago and I decided that I really wanted to return this year with the hopes that it would be bigger and better. We arrived very early as usual and were really excited to see that there were more vendors than ever and the parking situation was nicely organized. They actually had three off-site parking areas with shuttle services to handle the crowd. We parked at one of these sights and had a short ride to the event. We always arrive in advance of the parade, so that we can get the lay of the land and get first pick of selected items. If you are arriving on an empty stomach, it is also smart to arrive early and purchase your food prior to the end of the parade because once the parade ends, you will encounter a mob of people trying to get to the food trucks. For the most part we simply eat prior to arriving and avoid the trucks because the prices are very inflated and you simply don't have a lot of healthy options. Also, I prefer traditional meals with vegetables to sandwiches and street food. Just know that if you are "making a day of it", you can bring your own food, chairs, blankets and other items of comfort. While waiting for the parade to start, we walk around and check out the vendors but after a while, realize that they tend to be very similar and there just wasn't enough variety. We eventually find a spot to view the parade and it starts shortly thereafter. Once again, this is the saddest parade I have ever witnessed. It was unorganized, the students looked as if they didn't want to be there, (they weren't smiling or engaging), certain formations were sloppy and participants were "all over the place". Barriers were set up to contain the crowd and it was just not the fun and fuzzy experience I expected. I lasted about five minutes before walking away and that has never happened at any parade. Who walks away from a parade? We later caught the tail end of the parade and it was actually worse than what we witnessed at the beginning. I really don't understand why a community with resources can't figure out how to organize a decent parade! What's the deal? Here's the deal as I see it: Small towns don't have large budgets so they have to be creative. The young people have few community activities and spend much of their time actually rehearsing and practicing so that they deliver a flawless performance. Small towns know that when they host a festival this is their time to shine and put on their "Sunday best"! The participants are smiling and engaging and will stop at random points to entertain the audience. There are no barriers to restrict the kids or the crowd, and when the candy is dumped in the road so that the kids can actually run out and grab it, the entire parade stops and patiently waits. How cool is that? The lack of barriers is great for participants to walk over and hand candy to the little kids and adults. One of the parades gave out delicious strawberries to everyone along the parade route. What?? Ingenious! At this particular parade, we also noticed a huge church presence which we don't experience in more populated areas. One of the churches was giving out full sized bags of M&Ms like it was Halloween. The mayor gave me my first bag because I always scream for treats but the church came along and gave me additional bags so that I had six in all. Of course I shared them and the strawberries with the family. Incidentally, this was one of those towns that had less than 3000 residents. When it comes to parades in larger areas, the Duluth Fall Festival offers a great barrier-free parade consisting of community groups, schools, smiling and engaging participants, classic cars and a great variety of candy. Yes, the candy is important because I have to hustle it for my daughter and she loves chocolate. The Suwanee committee needs to attend and take notes. After eight years and no apparent progress, this festival is definitely off the list of possibilities for me. However, I will say that their children's play area was second to none. They had two large areas dedicated to the kids with lots of inflatables and activities. If you just wanted to just get out of the house on a beautiful day, listen to some music and watch your kids run and play, this would be the perfect opportunity.

I got to go back this year after a longgg time and was kind of surprised in how it turned more into a food festival, there was literally a whole strip just dedicated to food vendors. There was such a wide variety of foods from all sorts of different authentic cuisines to snacks and homemade treats for on the go! We ended up getting a frozen pink lemonade, elotes and the impossible gyoza. One of the stalls did sell fresh apple cider donuts and I would definitely recommend getting them if you go! Overall such a good time and experience with your friends and family! You can easily spend a couple hours here and they have a mini pumpkin patch, face painting, live music you name it! It's only one weekend though so be sure you're free!

FIRST ANNUAL DULUTH ARTS FESTIVAL!…read more This past weekend, I attended the Inaugural debut of the Duluth Arts Festival featuring live music performances, and art vendors. The artists displayed a variety of art forms such as photography, painting, glass, jewelry, leather goods and others. It was a very small turn out of vendors which surprised me because I am just accustomed to the massive throng of vendors that are all over the place during the Duluth Fall Festival. The greatest aspect of the festivals is that they are held on the beautiful Town Center lawn. It is the primary gathering place for community events and the perfect setting thanks to his expansive space and beautifully landscaped areas. I was simply looking forward to relaxing in my favorite chair, enjoying a cool breeze and listening to some great music. LET'S TALK ABOUT THE GOOD: The venue and weather was perfect on this day The professional guitarist was great. They had a GREAT play area for kids. They had great picnic tables with umbrellas placed right near the stage for diners. It was really a nice touch. LET'S TALK ABOUT WHAT NEEDS WORK: I would love to see a larger variety of vendors because we tend to travel to fairs and festivals quite often and are growing tired of seeing the same vendors over and over again. I love creativity and I just know that there are artists out there who work with different and unusual materials. This problem will probably resolve itself over time as more vendors sign up for the event. The first musical act happened to be students and not professionals. At an Inaugural event, you really need to put your best foot forward and make a great first impression. If the students cannot perform at a professional level, they simply should not be featured. For us, the first act sets the tone because if the music is bad, we can't stay. There were only three food trucks, hotdogs, burgers and quesadillas. They simply needed more variety and healthier options. Although they considered their bean and cheese quesadilla the healthier alternative, I did not. They needed at least one food venue with a lighter menu but, this was not a major issue for us because we tend to pack our own food. Hopefully, they will tweak things and next year's festival will be bigger and better. ***This is a two-day weekend festival. ***Feel free to bring your favorite chairs and snacks. ***Arrive early for great parking and choice seats. Normally, you have the entire lawn available but this time much of the available space was taken over by the large kid's area and the food trucks.

What could be better after a hike on beautiful Yonah Mountain than a visit to nearby Yonah Mountain…read moreVineyards? A lot of things as it turned out. Although the setting is admittedly spectacular, acres of hilly vineyards with views of the mountain behind, and the patio was certainly fancy, the tables each with fire pits in the center providing cheery warmth, the tasting experience itself was sub-par and overpriced. It lacked the authentic feel I've seen in other wineries and seems more of a tourist destination. First thing I noticed is the shockingly high tasting fee of $35 for a flight of 4 2-ounce pours of their choice. No substitutions allowed! Either these are some spectacularly great wines or this is a major rip-off. I passed. But since I was here I decided to have a glass. I got one of their estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. It was around $16 but since I was here. It was good, but certainly not worth the $48 they charge for a bottle. For the $35 do you get individual attention, descriptions from the bartender about the wines and about their winery? No. You get 4 labeled glasses to take back to your table. Not worth it. Find another place less touristy, more authentic. That shouldn't be hard. There are like 65 wineries in the area!

"Wine enters through the mouth, Love, the eyes…read more I raise the glass to my mouth, I look at you, I sigh." William Butler Yeats With the beautiful backdrop of the rolling hills of North Georgia, Yonah Mountains Vineyards delivers real wine and real romance. Whether it's for an afternoon date, or a full out wedding among the rows of vines, it's hard not to feel love in the air. Great outdoor seating, both covered and uncovered, place you right above the beautiful vineyard and allow you to take it all in. Yonah Mountains Vineyards separates itself from the others by providing familiar wines such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay etc as opposed to the traditional Muscadine wines of the south. The wine itself is decent, but definitely not near the quality of the west coast wines, but all were enjoyable. I particularly liked their Genesis 12, a red wine blend, and their Viognier, an impressive white. Wine flights are around $60 with a choice between white, red, or mixed. Bottles run around $40-100. A little pricey for the product, but then again, it's the whole experience that you are buying, and it's money well spent. Yonah Mountain Vineyards strikes the perfect balance between classy and casual. You'll be just as comfortable in jeans as in a tux or a horrid bridesmaid dress. Cheers!
