On a sunny day in February I went with a couple friends to Swanson's and it was one of the best days I've had in recent time. We spent a long time just meandering around, enjoying all of the beautiful plants and flowers, both in and outside. Other than everyone wearing masks it almost felt "normal." Everyone was respectful of distancing as well. I got so many plants, seeds, and a couple of pots all for a great price. Next time I need a little pick-me-up I'm going to head back. My hubs and I are part of a P-Patch community garden and every spring and summer, we come here to buy vegetable starts (lettuces, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc), Sluggo (organic way to keep the slugs away), and anything else we need (gloves, tools, etc) to get our garden going. We also love coming in November and December to see the beautiful holiday displays and the amazing collection of Christmas tree decorations. Seriously, if you're looking for some unique and fantastic ornaments, you have to check out Swanson's! IMHO, they have the best selection in town. Since the pandemic started, shopping visits are by appointment only, but they're super easy to make online. - Great selection, reasonable price - Unlike small shops, Swason's have a good selection and a reasonable price (not as good as Sky nursery, but that one is just too far). They have tons of house plants and a good selection of succulents (including string of pearls and banana). They also have a ton of cute pots and everyone here is nice. I'm originally from the Midwest, so I'm used to frequenting large-scale nurseries, but Swanson's really sits at a different level: it's a plant nursery, but also an experience--**especially** during the holiday season! I have to say, most people flock to nurseries during prime growing season, but November has got to be my favorite month. First, it's when the schlumbergera and cyclamen come out to play. And second, it's when everyone gets ready to decorate in preparation for Christmas. I don't even celebrate Christmas, as I partake in the more ancient traditions of solstice that's common for my nationality, but my appreciation for the Christmas holiday decorations has grown over time. Swanson's offers so many wreath and holiday plant options (poinsettia in every color!!) as well as xmas lights and the like. Even if you hate plants (get your head checked tho) you should come here and enjoy their Xmas cheer in the lovely greenhouse cafe they have, nestled amongst their indoor tropical plant collection. With that being said, if you're a serious houseplant enthusiast, quit hanging out in Fremont and come here. I've been to three of the most popular plant stores in Fremont and none of them can compete with the pricing and variety of Swanson's. Indoor Sun Shoppe, though, is still the best spot for succulent aficionados. On the other hand, I just couldn't afford the pink splash aglaonema anywhere else but at Swanson's. I originally sought out Swanson's because they have an impressively expansive collection of cyclamen, one of my favorite plants in my grandmother's giant garden in my homeland. They have cyclamen in every size and color, such that one might shed a single tear in joy. Unfortunately for my budget, I did not leave with only cyclamen. The lipstick plant, stromanthe triostar, wax Ivy, and their cohorts took me hostage! I will say that if you're looking to peruse a good pot collection, you might look elsewhere. Swanson's does carry a lot of beautiful cache pots but Indoor Sun Shoppe and Peace, Love & Happiness Club have better collections of small pots to 10" pots with drainage. I actually already had a lot of pots at home for my new plants so I didn't get any pots here. Swanson's places much more emphasis on affordable live plants, gearing towards outdoor landscaping but definitely holding their own as far as indoor plants are concerned. Lastly, everyone who works at Swanson's was quite friendly and helpful, and seem to genuinely love their jobs here. I still love my local nursery in Magnolia for their knowledge and expertise, but I've found a new spot for my plant addiction! Can't wait to stop by next spring and summer to be dazzled. read more

We love this cozyyet complete nursery. They cater extremely well to children, who can be found playing in the toy house, watching koi swim in the cafe, running through the hay maze (October) or Christmas tree building (December). They are everywhere and seem to be welcome! A variety of trees, shrubs, flowers (seasonal), bulbs, etc. can be found throughout the large nursery for enjoyment at home in your own gardens/yards. A delightful place. But don't order the "vegetable hash" for breakfast. You have to hunt for the potatoes, the typical main body of hash...but plenty of other vegetables, which you cannot taste because their flavors are smothered by the dominating presence of Brussels sprouts. Only the onions stand up against the sprouts...and the tug of war between these two ingredients just leaves a bitter aftertaste. Gave up about halfway through. read more

But, most definitely not as green as this place. And the smell of freshly cut Christmas trees just add to the holiday feels. This place is free and just filled with photo ops. Heck, there's even a "Christmas yurt" ready photo ops. There was a sleigh, snowman and Santa in there. The main greenhouse housed the model train station and toys for sale. My son loved the trains! Swansons is probably the best nursery we've ever been to. We were immediately overwhelmed and impressed with everything. They have a huge selection of healthy plants, with lots of heirloom varieties for everything. They have a vast storefront with everything you need for your garden, including pots, planters, etc. Their shop area has fun gifts and a gelato shop too! We just had ice cream so we didn't partake, but we'll remember for next time. Service was friendly and prices were reasonable. Love that they give you a little cardboard tray so that dirt doesn't get all over your trunk when moving your stuff home. Lastly - one advantage of writing this review months after visiting - I can say that all the plants we bought from them grew very happy and healthy. Definitely recommend them for your garden needs, and we'll be back. read more

Service manager in the plant section near the cafe had terrible breath and a short-fuse -- stood too close & was not super informative. The attendant who I asked to repot my plants, only bore aeration holes and did not bother to rotate the soil. I asked them to add a structure to the plant to prop it up -- they used a metal rod that didn't remotely fit the planter theme I brought to them. She had an attitude problem -- as if she would rather do something else or be somewhere else, even though she mentioned she grew up coming to Swanson's. Maybe two years before, another attendant took far more pride in her work quality and service. This team, then charged me $45 for this poor service which I later got re-done at a florist for far cheaper with a much better result. read more

What a fun family meet-up event @ Swanson's! One of the kids from our family group joined me for an annual ornament/lunch outing. This has been a family tradition for a decade and Swanson's was our venue for the second time in the past few years. The last time we went there were live reindeer. Not this time. Lunch at Swanson's cafe was satisfying with a lovely setting among the potted foliage. My young companion had the kid meal chicken sandwich with fries ($10) and a latte ($4.50). The French fries were declared yummy. I sampled one and I agree, the fries were well done. I had the Alaskan salmon eggs Benedict plate with pan fried tators and a mini salad ($21). Tasty with Hollandaise sauce. The salmon was prepared 'just right', moist and full of flavor. Lots of fun exploring the whole 5 acres. A huge variety of Christmas tree ornaments. Thursday is Senior Day (10% disc) for over 55. Used a Swandollar for a 50% discount on the ornament selected by my young companion. The customer service associate beautifully boxed up the ornament to regive at a family party next week. Just a mention: there were a number of unique decor items that may not be readily available elsewhere. I loved the live edge carved mushrooms about 20-inches tall. Made from tree stumps. An art treasure. A crowd turned out today for a festive gathering. read more

We've been going to Swanson's for years for our annual spring planting, but this year I also asked if they could help me out with a jade plant of mine that was in tough shape. Despite being a busy Saturday, their associate Preston was super helpful, gave me a bunch of advice, and did a masterful job of trimming and repotting the plant. He even gave me handwritten instructions on how to ensure the cuttings propagate successfully. I'm super impressed with the level of service, and very relieved to have my plant on a better track. My first experience here at Swansons Nursery was awesome! Nice parking and I was greeted with so many annual blooming flowers of many kinds right off the entrance. There are like 5 to 6 huge greenhouses and outdoor areas which are designated for each plant categories, and my favorite is the indoor houseplant sections, of course! One has a gift shop, a cafe, and a huge selection of indoor houseplants. One has large outdoor plants, trees, and shrubs. And the list goes on! The staff here are super friendly! I was trying to ID a small cutting which they tagged it for $2.99, and no one was able to help even though they sat at the 'information' desk. That didn't change the fact that I felt like I was in a botanical garden. Plants are very well-taken care of and watered, and I got what I was looking for. I'll definitely come back since it's only 15 minutes away versus other plant nurseries that are so far away. read more

Not just a nursery, but a wonderful and peaceful experience. My wife and I went over for a Sunday morning of walking through plant filled greenhouses, enjoying a coffee while watching Koi, and picking up a few new indoor plant friends. The staff is all very friendly and eager to help in anyway they can. I am also very surprised by their knowledge of each type of plant and how best to care for them. Excellent recommendations. Over the years (decades really) we have spent many enjoyable hours (and considerable dollars on beautiful plants ) at Swansons and had many delicious meals in the various incarnations of the cafe space. This latest is truly something to celebrate! Shared an most enjoyable breakfast this morning with friends - for me and one other it was the summer hash with crispy polenta. Mildly spiced - just enough to really let the vegetables take center stage and bring out their best flavors. And those poached eggs? Perfect - I usually avoid poached eggs at restaurants because the white isn't done and the yolk is over cooked. Not here - white was fully cooked with most tasty yolk that was just right. My friends had a lovely benedict and crispy bacon on the inspired breakfast sandwich. Can't wait to see what you will be offering for lunch! As always Swansons deliver only the best! read more

In the time of COVID-19, everyone is working on their garden. I have heard over and over again that folks can't seem to keep things in stock because there are herds of people coming through buying plants. While this is great business for those who sell plants it can also present a challenge when there are so many people in one location at once. Swansons, a local nursery near the Ballard area of Seattle, offers one of the most beautiful and plentiful displays of plants I have seen around. In particular, I love their ornamental grass collection, shade ferns and lavender. If you're looking for something rare or unusual for your outdoor garden, I might check with Swansons first. As I mentioned above, crowding can be an issue so they have implemented an appointment system. If you know when you would like to drop in, be sure to log into their site and choose an appointment time. You can always change it if needed if you're running behind and I've never had an issue if I'm running early. For all those other folks who unfortunately can't plan out their day, you can take your chance at a walk in which is permitted if space is available. The one thing I wish they had more of are pots. More plastic pots would be incredibly helpful and medium glazed ceramic pots as well. Currently they have extra large that are too big for any one person to carry and those that are small (often without drainage holes!) for indoor plants. Where are the ones for the in between sized plants! Swansons and Sky are the too big nurseries here in the north part of Seattle. Honestly, Swansons has the larger collection of plants with unusual varieties and colors of common plants however Sky has a much larger bonsai supply section with a much larger pot selection. If only they could blend a bit and I can just go to one nursery! read more

Amazing nursery with equally amazing pot selections! They are currently limiting customer capacity within the store due to COVID, so if you are visiting during standard hours when most 9-5ers are off work, then I recommend booking a reservation on their website. Parking is extremely plentiful. When you are inside the store, there are two greenhouse sections for indoor plants. The section closest to the entrance has small indoor plants in 2-3" pots. The other section has a larger plant assortment and the plants come in larger pot sizes. I had to fight the urge to buy all the plants I don't currently own in my home! This is also where you can find their selection of cache pots, nursery pots, plant stands, and baskets. Some of the cool plants I've seen here over the last few visits in December are Alocasia Polly, Philodendron Congo and Birkin, Jewel Orchid, Ficus Audrey, Variegated Rubber Plant, Pothos Njoy, Calathea Triostar Stromanthe, lots of snake plant varieties. I haven't been coming here long enough to find more rarer plants but I'm pretty pleased with their selection in December. There is yet another section where the cash registers are, which leads to the exit. Super convenient setup and I always enjoy coming here every time. It feels very safe. read more

I am a Swansons girlie through and through. It's supported many phases of my life from being an indoor plant geek during the pandemic to moving into being an outdoor gardening once I bought a house. I now enjoy casually coworking in their cafe - which, might I add: everything is DELICIOUS. I take all mothers and mothers in law to Swansons when they visit and they are equally enamored with the quality and selection of the nursery, the vibes, and the great customer service. I love everything about this place- except the amount of money I spend here! Thankfully Swanson dollars help. I tend to use them in the gift shop since I buy holiday gifts throughout the year. Helps when your buying $90 worth of jewelry that about 50% can be free $ from veggies I had to get. The gift shop has great books, accessories, furniture and decor. Most the staff has been so helpful whether it's understanding a veggie disease, identifying a house plant, getting rid of pests or putting together beautiful arrangements. I have especially appreciated Jonathan lately... he's a wealth of knowledge and clearly loves plants. He's helped me put several arraingments that will last the test of time. I am not always on top of it with my veggies starts and often get my garden starts here. I've always been lucky and if not they stand behind their products. We often frequent the cafe for brunch so I suggest making an afternoon of it. When asked my favorite place in seattle this is in my top 3! Great place to be creative and refuel. read more

I showed up at opening on a Saturday in May (hello busy season!) and she immediately started helping me put together a vision for our event. They have a good selection of indoor plants. I came on a Sunday afternoon and didn't make an appointment in advance, but luckily there was a walk-in slot available. All the staff I encountered were friendly. I mainly looked at the the houseplants. On the day I was there, I saw one section with larger floor plants (bird of paradise, Aglaonemas, ficus Elastica, etc.) and the second section (where the pond is) had more of the smaller sized houseplants. I'm mainly focused on calatheas, they had a decent selection of 4 inch and 6 inch sizes. Saw some Calathea Beauty Stars and Ornatas. They were pretty busy and I'm sure they have more selection if you go during a restock day. Plants looked healthy overall. You can expect large floor plants to cost around $150 and up. Smaller plants expect about $30 and up for 6 inches which I think is standard nursery pricing. What made Swanson stand out to me was that I emailed them about their return policy because the Aglaonema Maria I bought had a couple of small scales after a few days of being quarantined by itself at home. I'm only talking like 1-3 tiny ones on the plant, not a major infestation at all. It was easily managed but to be safe I emailed them about their return policy. Not only did they respond the same day. The response was helpful and courteous. They assured me that their products are guaranteed for a year and I can bring the item back for exchange or refund (with receipt only). I really appreciate this kind of service because it gives me peace of mind when shopping regarding indoor plant pests. I also emailed Sky Nursery and Indoor Sun Shoppe about their return policies for houseplants on the same day. It's been about 2-3 weeks and no one has responded to me. I even checked my spam folder to be sure. So that saying something! Based on this alone, I'll definitely be returning to Swanson's. Look forward to finding other houseplants there. UPDATED 8/26/2020 SUMMARY: All nurseries have healthy and unhealthy stock - try your luck when shopping and inspect your plants carefully for pests. Swanson's still ranks number one for me due to customer service and overall plant health in-store. I'd recommended Indoor Sun Shoppe as the second option because I think you'd get the best deal there if you find healthy plants. ___ DETAILS: I've gotten a chance to visit Sky Nursery and Indoor Sun Shoppe in person the past few weekends. In addition, I got a chance to return to Swanson's again too. It seems like basically all the nurseries are generally focused on moving houseplants out from their stock fast and it does seem like how great of a plant you end up getting depends on chance - what's in stock during your visit. All the nurseries I visited had both healthy and unhealthy plants the same. By unhealthy, I'm referring either to improper care (such as overwatering) or some kind of pest problem (I've seen mealy bugs and spider mites at all stores). Be mindful when you shop and check your plant. In terms of price, Indoor Sun Shoppe was the cheapest. I'd say about $7-10 cheaper per plant. Sky Nursery being second cheapest and Swanson most expensive. Overall, I'd still argue that Swansons has the healthiest percentage of plants. I was looking for an 6 Inch Orbifolia and put in a request at Swanson's. The staff that responded to me was very helpful and prompt. They informed me that 6 inches haven't been seen for a couple of years and offered other suggestions. I ended up emailing a nursery near me (Kent East Hill Nursery) and they happened to have some discounted 6 inch Orbifolias. I felt a little hesitant at the store to purchase, but decided to risk it. I bought a 6 inch Orbifolia for $18.99 and a Calathea Fasciata for $24.99. When I checked out the roots at home, to my dismay the Orbifolia was a complete sham. Probably not the nursery's fault, but it was basically a 3-4 inch propagation planted prematurely into a 6 inch pot. It was awful. In addition, the Fasciata and Orbifolia were planted into a strange bark course mix. Terrible, terrible experience. I wish I had listened to the staff at Swanson's. I won't be returning to Kent East Hill Nursery. It's Swanson's from now on. read more

A great selection of plants, very helpful people, a great cafe with delicious salads (although it can get loud and busy), and lots of fun home goods and cookbooks to peruse. Even if you don't plan on spending money this is a fun place to bring people from out of town. Eat lunch at Alexa's and the meander around the garden. This is an all-season destination. The staff are knowledgable and the prices, while expensive, are worth it. The plants are high quality and their mulch/soil/composts are EXCELLENT... buy 4 get 1 free is a great deal... but make sure you have enough room in your car! I'm so glad that my relatives sent me a gift certificate. I was able to use my holiday dollars and my gift certificate and only had to pay 3 bucks for a giant bag of mulch, 5 primrose plants and a medium size camellia. I bought a very sad 50% off monstera adansonii here for $20. I tried to haggle to $15, and they acted like that was ridiculous. I made an error in judgment and bought it anyway, swayed by the store as though I was getting a deal. A few days later for $30 I saw the most ridiculously lovely adansoniis at Indoor Sun Shoppe. I should have just bought one and returned the $20, but I'm a sucker for a neglected plant. Plus I'm fairly certain I'd just get store credit, and I don't want to give any money to them, they are overpriced for indoor plants (and the selection is lacking). But seriously Swansons? You don't know what plants are worth. Just because they are trendy doesn't mean you can charge out the you know what. Disappointing and won't be returning. Too big for their britches. If you want indoor, go to one of the many small businesses around the area (Indoor Sun Shoppe, Cultivate Propagate) and support them, they are surprisingly cheaper and have a much better selection. read more

The live rain deer were very unexpected and the enclosed area was very well kept. I also was very surprised by the model train Star Wars village. There was great attention to detail.
