I'm not sure what was lost in translation, but Kelly cut my hair shorter than I asked and I said below the chin twice. The second time being when she asked to confirm. I had my glasses off so I didnt see how short she made it until she had to walk away for something and i looked closer . She seems nice , but i dont know why that happened. My hair was at my shoulders before the appointment and I dont like my hair cut above my chin for the simple reason it just doesnt look good on me . There was no point in saying anything as the damage was already done , but yeah apparently I wasn't clear enough and will remember that going forward. read more

I had 3 vaccines and had Covid 4 times! my hair was growing but breaking and leaving my hair dry and terrible! today I made an appointment at Sweeney Todd with Vicki! I was so frightened that the only help I could get is cutting it short. Vicki left most of my length but cut away the ends that were all broken and relayered my hair. when all was done, and after she blew my hair , I looked in the mirror and cried! my hair was beautiful, soft and shiny! she said something that I will always remember, your hair is your crown!! thank you thank you thank you Vicki for making my crown shine again! I've been using Sweeney Todd since I was seven, now a lady doesn't revel her age, but I'll tell you it's been over 20 years. let me tell you, when I moved to South Brunswick I tried to find a place closer to me that I xould use, FAILURE. All I got was botched trims before I went running back to my tried and true. I've had my hair cut over the years by almost everyone and have never had a bad experience. (Also had a perm and color and they did awesome with that too!) And the prices?! Come on! Super Cuts costs more and they aren't nearly as talented. Nevermind the atmosphere is on point. They become your best friend. My mom used them, I use them, and now I bring my son. I almost don't want to tell you about them because I won't be able to get an appointment as easily (ha!) but these ladies deserve a round of applause. Thank you guys for being amazing! read more

I booked an appointment for hair cut with Michelle. Horrible hair cut and worst customer service ever. She did not even ask what kind of haircut do you want or how short you want your hair to be. Only thing she ever said sit down there. covered with a cloth, and started cutting the hair and then just roughly removed the cloth. All the cut hair came on my face and my shoulder which she didn't even bother to look or offer to clean or she didn't even feel sorry for the way she was being. May be she had a really bad day but that doesn't account for the kind of attitude she was carrying. She never even asked at the end if we liked the cut or are we happy with the service or is this what we wanted or even a bye. Meh! It felt like a torture to be there. Bad haircut and bad attitude. Keri did a rockstar job on my hair. She listened to all my concerns (and I was very nervous to take 12 inches off my hair). The cut is phenomenal! Aside from that, she delicately balayaged my hair and was patient with lifting it as to not damage my hair after years of color. She is realistic in her color goals and will do her best WITHOUT damaging your hair. I appreciate her honestly and her "real talk" about going from point a to point b after years of OTC dyeing my hair. First timer here, won't be my last. I showed Blanca my FB avatar and a photo of a past good haircut, and she totally nailed it Spent the time to get the color and cut exactly to my specs. Everyone was so accomodating, and the salon does an excellent job of following the Covid distancing, disinfecting and masking rules. I was seen promptly and prices were very reasonable, even a little lower than I expected. If you are coming during quarantine, bring your phone or book because they've gotten rid of pretty much anything, eg magazines, than can be touched by multiple people. I went to one stylist for balayage and haircuts, but she stopped doing what I asked her to do resulting in my hair being too dark. After changing stylists, the next stylist dyed my hair way too dark and when I called the salon asking what to do, they couldn't care less. I dye my hair red, which is a hard color because it stains and other salons have left color all over my face and ears. I don't know how she does it, but I never leave with color on my skin. We like this place and have gotten many cuts here over the years. We got no complaints, as a matter of fact its something we look forward to. Now its time to let them know how we feel about them. I recommend you make an appointment, especially on weekends, but being a retired geezer with a Wife that works remotely, we have the advantage of popping in during the week and trying our luck. I've gone here for about a year and the success rate is about 40%, but this final time was a disaster. The hairstylist told me that I shouldn't be afraid to tell her what I wanted since it was a service I was paying for. I agree with that, but it doesn't matter what they say if they don't listen and do whatever they think your hair should look like. As a male with hair on the longer side--who likes it that way--the first thing the stylist said to me is "wow your hair is LONG". That should have been a sign to me that she has ideas of how long men should have their hair. I started off by saying I wanted the back and sides tighter--shaved--and that I was self conscious about my forehead due to years of acne scarring, and would like to keep the front long to where it would cover it somewhat. Two times she held up my hair showing where she planned to cut it. I said no both times, that I would like it past my eyebrows when straight. Putting that off, she started with the sides and backs and snuck in cutting the front to how she wanted it to look, against what I asked for, and by the time I realized it was too late. Looking like Lord Farquaad. I don't know if this was some sort of mission for her to have me face my insecurities. Was it a joke to make me face my fears [fore]head on? It has had me worrying more about my hair more than I did before the haircut, and I'll be wearing a hat and taking vitamin supplements for the next few months. If you don't care how your hair looks and just need it cut regardless of style, then disregard this review. read more

The absolute worst hair experience I had in my life was at the Milltown location of Sweeney Todd Hair. I asked for my hair to be dyed my root color (brown) and the hair dresser dyed my hair BLACK. That night, when I called the salon, I was told to purchase clarifying shampoo and that the hair dresser used semi-permanent hair dye. THEY LIED TO ME. The hair dresser used PERMANENT hair dye. The only thing worse than my hair being dyed the wrong color is the response from the staff. A much better hair dresser at a much better salon did what the hair dressers at Sweeney Todd Milltown should've done. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!!!!! read more

I have been going to Sweeney Todd for about 2 years now. In the past, I would receive perfect haircuts. If I wanted to add layers to my long hair, they would be subtle and give the right about of bounce. If I needed my bangs cleaned up they would always frame them to flatter my face shape. I went to Sweeney Todd's this past friday for a cut. I asked for about 2 inches off (my hair was past the middle of my back and one length) and to add layers. The woman that cut my hair trimmed 2 inches off the bottom, grabbed a fistful of hair at the top of my head and chopped it in half. As she worked her way through the rest of my hair to "blend the layers", she ended up taking 5" off the bottom in total. She said that the layers would be all throughout my hair, which makes sense. I have shoulder length hair with a chunky short layer that hits my ear on one side and hits my chin on the other, and a second layer close to my ends. She didn't bother to trim my bangs, which are chin length, so my bangs are longer than the first layer. I look like a dumb ass mushroom and I hate it. I cannot recommend this salon for their haircutting services. I'm taking 50,000 mcg of Biotin a day until this grows out. (Biotin is water soluble so as long as you stay hydrated it'll come out in your pee after your body processes it. ) read more

I almost don't want to write this review because Sweeney is the best kept secret in the East Brunswick area. I have received regular hair treatments at Sweeney for a few years now - cut, color, highlights. Each of the stylists does uncommonly good work. Seriously. You can't go wrong with anyone who works there. (Though, Kelly may be my personal hair goddess.) The prices are very fair. It's easy to get an appointment. For walk-ins, I've found that they're spot on with time estimates (e.g. "We can take you in 40 minutes"). As one might expect, the wait is a bit longer on weekends and before major holidays. Other than the lavish magazine selection, the place is pretty no frills. You get a plastic cape. No one is going to hand you a cup of coffee or complimentary glass of champagne. But, that's just fine. Because they cut great hair. I should also add that the stylists are very patient with customers and with each other. There is a good vibe in the place. I think this is why the stylists seem so happy and turnover appears to be so low here. I also like that they don't aggressively push products. You may say, "Wow, my hair looks really silky." and they'll go, "Yeah, that stuff is great! It's right over there on the shelf if you'd like some." However, the fact that this place isn't a running commercial for Matrix makes me happy indeed. I never thought I would spend so much time extolling the virtues of a salon - rather unfortunately named - Sweeney Todd. But, there it is. They're great at what they do. read more

Depending on who cuts my hair, this place is hit or miss. I used to love this place so much and came here all the time when I lived in NJ. Now I usually get haircuts if I'm in town and in need of a trim, so I can't always coordinate with the stylists I prefer. My favorite is Kelly, she's friendly, personable, and actually knows how to work with long hair, and doesn't mind putting in the effort. She isn't overly chatty, but does make casual small talk. More than anything, she's able to listen and sense whether the customer wants to have a conversation. I once had someone who yakked the entire time, asked a lot of questions, and I can't speak for everyone, but I kind of enjoy quiet haircuts, relaxing, sitting in the chair, as they fix my hair, make me look better, Lol. Anyway, my past few visits have been lackluster. I tell them to trim only off an inch from the bottom because I like it long. And then I specify layers all over -- I need body and added volume, as well as face framing layers. I guess each girl interprets this differently, but it seems more often than not, they take that as an excuse to snip a few ends here and there, calling it "long" layers. Umm, meaning you aren't really changing anything, just maintaining what I already have. Layers had grown out, because there had been shorter layers in the first place, so in order to get that back, you need to cut more than the very bottom. Yeah, the prices are good $19 for a general shampoo ($5) and cut ($14), but I don't want to pay $19 bucks for a 5 minute process where nothing changes. It looks the same, absolutely no body, no layers, nothing. I can't even tell a difference. Maybe I got unlucky, and she didn't understand what I was trying to get across. At the very least, I had a trim and got the ends cleaned up. If I come back next month to visit family I guess I have to be super specific: I want an inch off the bottom, face framing layers, top and bottom, and layers all around/through the back, from the top of my head to the very bottom. In general, the girls are super sweet, the place is a nice open space, and you don't feel overcrowded. The white decor is simple and calming, making it seem more spacious, plus the natural light from the front. Small waiting area, can get busy but never totally filled up. Have magazines there for customers to read, but I notice the staff usually takes them and keeps them at their stations. A popular place -- men, women, and children come here. Usually you can get seen right away if you do a walk-in in the early/late afternoon on a weekday. But there were times I came, and I had to wait 45 minutes as a walk-in. They do good business -- my fault for not making an appointment. Also appointments are super easy to make too. They usually have a time frame close to what you originally requested. Really love this place. But I either need to be more upfront about what I want, or talk to them like they're idiots, and I feel mean doing that. read more

I made an appointment earlier this week to have my head shaved so I could sell my hair. I waited there for an hour and a half before I even got into a chair and then the girl refused to do it because she didn't feel comfortable shaving my whole head. When I made the appointment I told them that I wanted my head shaved so I could sell my hair and the fact that they refused to after making me wait there for so long was not right because she already knew what I wanted done. Great experience here! Everyone is friendly, helpful and patient. Shannon cut my hair and I'll be going back to her specifically to get my cut maintained. I showed her pictures to give her a rough idea of what I wanted and she gave me exactly what I had in mind. And the place is dirt cheap, $13 for a cut, $16 for a cut with a wash. I went into Sweeney Todd with shoulder length hair. I showed the young lady who was going to cut my hair pictures of the style that I wanted from multiple angles. It was a tapered Mohawk. Before she began to cut, I then verbally explained what I wanted and asked if she understood. She said that she did. Not only did she give me a buzz cut towards the back but there was also no fade or tapering of the hair. So now I am left with 5 inches of hair on the crown and front of my head and literally no hair at the nape or the sides with no transition between the two. Do you know Phil and Lil from the Nickelodeon show 'Rugrats'? Yup that's me right now. I DO NOT recommend this hair salon to anyone with even the slightest bit of natural curl to their hair. 1/5 rating from me is a generous one. I try to give this place my business but they let me down EVERY TIME. Each of the last 3 times I went there to get my haircut, I end up sitting in the waiting area for 30 minutes only to be told that they don't have any time for me until (pick a time a couple of hours later). Even though there are several stylists sitting around on their butts doing nothing! I am a 55 year old man with hardly any hair to cut. A haircut on me takes about 10 minutes. Yet, they claim not to have any time to take care of me. They have a sign in the window that states "walk ins are welcome" but this is total BS. I have not felt welcome in this place for a very long time. I left and went to Hair Cuttery instead. Yes, I had to pay $3 more for my haircut, but at least I was treated as a valued customer. Well I have been use this place for a while maybe 2 years. Decent hair cuts. I am pretty easy 2 blade on the sides blended up top sissor cut on top. It's pretty easy and sometimes they do lets say an ok job. Looks like they just changed hands. I walked in was told in 30 mins I could be served. I came back in 90 mins. I had a phone meeting. When I walked in she said all booked up till 8 and I should have came back in the 30 mins. She was pretty rude on top of it. I was late but being in the service industry you try to give options. You make sure not to say no or be rude.She could have set another date for an appointment. She instead chose to lose a customer of two years. read more

I know what everybody's thinking....why doesn't this guy go to a BARBER SHOP?!?! I'll tell you why. I have no patience. I can not stand walking into a barber shop and there being like 8 guys ahead of me no matter what time of day and the Barber is working at a ladi-freaking-da pace. I know I know....the comradery...the manliness... the classic feel...all those things your supposed to get in the barber shop I could care less about. I don't want to be that good of friends with my barber, because it'll just piss me off when they inevitably screw up my hair. At some point....they all screw up.What it comes down to is I am not a patient person and just want to walk in or set up an appointment and get out asap. I've been to most barber shops in town and found that Emilly at Sweeny Todd's does just as good a job as anybody. I used to go to Shannon but recently I've just been getting Emilly more. Everyone there is very nice and for now I'll go 4 stars but when I am inevitably dissatisfied...I will update. P.S. I know everyone has a bad day so it may lead to a bad haircut at some point, but I think anyone working with hair especially needs to put that all aside. My daughter and I had color and blow drys done by Mandy tonight. We are satisfied overall with the quality of her work. However, I am displeased with the business practice of this salon. There is a sign in the window that says "we accept competitor's coupons. No request of stylist with the coupon." It should be noted that this is the ONLY restriction documented on the sign. However, Tatiana, who was supposedly the acting manager invented her own rules for accepting the coupons. Nowhere in the store did it say that mobile coupons were not accepted. I asked if I could come back within 24 hours and she said no. Secondly, she said that I could not use a coupon from anywhere out of town. I had a coupons from neighboring towns, all within a 10 mile radius. She said they would not be accepted because they were out of town. And then they could only be used on haircuts. This is a deceptive business practice. She was very rude to me in her manner of speaking to me. She said I don't know what a competitor is considered and no one would leave town for hair service. I left a 20% gratuity for the stylist since she did quality work; however I am so dissatisfied with the salon's business practice that I will not return. I would have given this salon 5 star ratings in the past; however tonight's experience with the business practice has soured me and I will not return here. They should consider themselves lucky to have received a 2 star rating. I was generous with that tonight. I would rather pay a little more money for better customer service. read more

Very very long waits even with an appointment. Why the heck do they take appointments that they cannot keep. 30-60 min wait with an appointment. Last time, finding a new place. Haircut is ok and the hairdressers are all very nice. The hairdressers have to answer the phone constantly the owners refuse to hire someone for the front desk. Even after moving to Glen Ridge, I always make it a point to get my haircut here whenever I am in the area. I have never waited for more than a few minutes (although I do put a reservation down), the stylists are generally pretty friendly, the cuts are inexpensive ($14) and very fast. Granted, I have a very easy cut (3 on top, 2 on the sides) but you'd be surprised at how some of the chain places like great clips can mess it up. They also have e-mail promotions from time to time. Although I only started coming here the past few months, I have really enjoyed my visits here. read more

It is hard to judge a place like this on just one visit, but this seems like a place I will visit again. I went in during the middle of the week, early afternoon which usually is a good time for most haircutting places. The wait was short, and I went from my hair being kind of long and messy to shorter. I came out looking like the haircuts I would get at my previous trusted place. The price is in the same range too, so I did like I would do there and give them a $20 bill which covers the cut and a tip. A lot of places in this area end up in two categories... 1) A manly man barber shop where people get fades and everyones hair is cut with electric clippers primarily. 2) A salon which is more targeted towards women, and usually has higher prices. Plus men never review those types of places so I have no idea if its for me. I'm not picky, I just want a place I can go in and trust them to clean me up a bit so I am glad I found this place. read more

So I've never gotten my hair professionally colored before.... only box dyed it black... which I know is like hell for a stylist/colorist. I went to Tina( 35 years experience and a master stylist) as a referral from a good friend and when I first met her she's the sweetest and funniest woman ever. I was very open and honest with her with my expectations and told her as long as she was honest with me about how it was going to turn out that I'll be okay and won't cry like a princess, I understood my black hair wasn't going to be lightened to silverfish brown with a ombré into blonde in one sitting. So we use opilux or some type of less harsh bleach not once but twice because Tina said it was working well and not doing a lot of damage. She explained it was going to be a process but also said she was impressed with how light we got my hair.... Well that's about the only thing I can say she did correctly. She did not apply bleach on my roots but covered my entire head probably about up to an inch before my roots. So I have these black roots and bleached orange head now... at this point she brings out the binder of hair swatches and tells me to pick the colors I want to have... COLORS AKA TWO AKA FADE INTO LIGHT AKA OMBRÉ. So I picked a darker brown for up top and a lighter one for the ends and she makes it clear we'll have to work in sessions to get it lighter, I affirmed her that I don't care as long as my hair is not orange or anything close to what it looked like after the bleaching ( as a joke because it was that ugly of a light bright orange) . Well little do we know 35 mins later as she's rinsing the color out the first thing I ask is no orange right ?? No it looks great I'm so happy ! I sit down and as it's wet I can see in the mirror my hair is clearly black at the roots still with a fade into bright orange. She comes over and started to dry just one side for a pic and I almost got choked up, I said Tina it's orange. She refused it was and continued to be happy with how brown it looked. In shock and about to cry I paid my 185 dollars and left since I was there for 8 and a half hours. I called back to explain what happened and of course they offer to fix it but no offense who in my position would want anyone below "a master stylist" to touch my hair at this point. I explained to them I paid for a service I didn't receive and even if I got honesty and accountability thrown my way I would have been a lot happier and probably understanding. I go in tomorrow to speak with the manager who was super nice as well as the rest of the girls and Tina so the manager can hear her side of the story...... I'm assuming I will not get refunded only offered more service that I'm clearly oh so confident in.... so please people do your research before going here.
