Went to celebrate with friends.I wasn't expecting too much from a restaurant next to Wal-mart in Plymouth. Interior was generic and nondescript. Menu choices were simple and appealing. The food was remarkably good, and tasty. I truly would have given the restaurant a better rating had it not been for our wait person. Since we were out with friends and wanted to visit with them, we felt it was obnoxious and rude behavior when our wait person, not only interjected herself into our conversation, but literally hijacked it- she went so far as to stand at the end of our table and wait to join in, wasting no opportunity to tell us all about herself. It felt quite intrusive. She drives a volkswagon, lived in AZ for a time, was a flight attendant, massage therapist, dental worker, healthcare worker and waitress...oh and yeah, her dad owns the restaurant. I am sure she is a lovely person, but really, a little space, a bit more decorum on her part would have not only been appreciated, but in keeping with a fine dining experience. read more

FRESH ingredients, walking distance from hotel, best meal I've had during my stay in the area, and my meal was under $20!

We were in Sheboygan for a Kohler Factory tour and decided to look for an Italian restaurant. The Trattoria Stefano seemed a bit elegant for our needs so we drove to Plymouth to Sweet Basil. Excellent decision. Prices were reasonable, and the service was superb - as was the food. We both had chicken/pasta dishes. My husband and I ordered a steak with the Gorgonzola cheese. When I cut into my steak it was redder then my husband's steak. I sent it back two times. When it came back the last time, it was burnt with no cheese on there, no roasted potatoes and lacked presentation, as you can see in my photo. I was so disappointed. I asked the waiter to take it off my bill. He felt so bad and apologized when he gave me my bill. I was so shocked that the manager didn't come over to apologize for my meal. What a manager should do. So my husband went to her and she said that she did see my steak that was burnt and said if she knew it was mine she would have come to apologize to which I replied "you should still apologize if it's any customer". She apologized again and said that you know that cooks don't like it when you send it back. So I'm assuming that is why my steak looked like that. Then she asked me if I wanted him to make me a hamburger. I said "why, so he can do something to my hamburger". Decent wine selection. Food was okay. Service was a bit slow. Not a terrible experience but also Nothing to write home about really.

Sweet Basil is one of those rare restaurants where you are hard pressed to find even one thing on the menu that doesn't make your mouth water. From the appetizers (margarita flatbread is one of my favorites) to the salads (I'm a sucker for their ceaser) to the soups (clam chowder to die for!) to their entrées (pecan encrusted salmon is delicious) and even their desserts are divine! Some even come from a local bakery called BetterSweet Bakery and that women works magic I tell you. So long story short come to Sweet Basil with an appetite because if you don't order at least one of every course you'll be missing out! read more

Terrible terrible terrible service. We've given this restaurant more than one try. We've been there during the week and on the weekends and everytime the service has been terrible. The bartender always seems drunk and gives horrible service. We waited almost 45 minutes for our first drink, then had to flag her down again for menus. It wasn't even busy. She seemed more interested in complaining about coworkers and her problems to "regulars" than to attend to other bar patrons. We were there for so long before we even got a second drink and our order taken. Another time we came early in the week and sat in the dining room. I think we had Brenda? How annoying! She never stopped talking and seemed like she had 500 million things going on and was rushing around like crazy even though it wasn't busy at all! The food has always been good though! Everything we ordered food wise was terrific! But the service needs serious improvement! We won't be back any time soon as a result. Customers don't want to deal with sloppy bartenders complaining about everything and servers that seem like they took a bunch of uppers speeding around. read more

Just had my fourth experience at Sweet Basil. We hadn't been there for about 6 months. I don't know what or who changed. The food served at previous experiences was outstanding and the service was incredible. Tonight was another story. We had reservations and were seated on time. I had to flag down the hostess 40 minutes later to get our order placed. We were served more then 60 minutes after that. It seemed like we were forgotten. The restaurant was at about 60% capacity. I was promised water twice, but never received it. The food was prepared correctly but had minimal flavor. I believe it was substandard beef and shrimp. I will not return, Too bad, it was once very nice and near by, now it's just near by. read more

If you want consistent fantastic food there is only one place in the area and that includes Kohler. You need to eat here.

Our favorite place for dinner. We eat at the bar, great atmosphere, friendly people. The food is amazing. The salmon is as good as any you will get anywhere. Good salads, flat bread pizzas, shrimp dishes, and filet. Try the Mac and short ribs - wow. All the servers are great, but Erica is the best bartender/server on the planet. Stayed at the Baymont Motel and decided to make our restaurant choice easy by simply walking across the street to Sweet Basil for dinner. Very deceiving from the outside; quite lovely inside...nice bar, outside patio space. This is no supper club. Good menu with plenty of choices for almost any diner from the health concious to steak or pasta lovers. We ordered three appetizers...bruchetta, calamari and clams and all were very fresh and very good. Then we waited over an hour for our entrees. Again when we finally got our food it was all very good. Our server was apologetic and offered us a free cocktail. We decided to overlook the long wait and ordered dessert and we were glad we did...they were delicious; carrot cake, rasperry poppy seed cake, chocolate volcano cake and triple chocolate cake. The kitchen deserves a lot better. The food was great, but that was about the only thing good about the place. If they had take out, I would eat their food every other weekend, but I will never be back in that restaurant again. Where should I start? Lets start with the price because my standards for a restaurant are based on their prices. You are looking at the cheapest plate being at $25, which means you better have a nice atmosphere and good service, not the case at all. There were chips on the walls everywhere, the kitchen is basically open to the dining room )swinging doors with windows that should only be in a warehouse), and it is part of a strip mall type of place. The service was by far the worst i have experienced, other than in an I-hop when i lived in Omaha. The only reason we knew her name was by looking at the receipt at the end, never came back to our table unless we waved her down, made a side comment, or gave her the WTF look. It took her about 15 minutes to get our first drinks, set them on the table, and walked away(we were ready to order). She came back about 5 minutes later, mind you our water and bread has been empty since she dropped off our drinks, and we go to ordering, she could handle that part. We didn't see her again until our food was done, drinks empty once again. Like I said earlier, food was great, no complaints on that side of things at all. Plates finished, continuing our conversations, wondering why our empty plates are still in front of us, finally, she comes back and grabs our plates asking if we would like any desert, one guy got the tiramisu, good once again, but it took a good 10 minutes to get brought out, already being pre-cooked and plated. Never asking anyone else if they wanted an after dinner drink, walking away before we had a chance to say anything, and just trying to rush us out to get another table in or something. If you want to get away from the Elkhart Lake crowds during race weekends or are lookng for the non-traditional Sheboygan fare, you must frequent Sweet Basil. The food is amazing, as is the ambiance and staff. Their risotto is out of this world! It is truly a jewel. read more

Sweet Basil is awsome. My husband and I have been there twice. The Tuscan Meatloaf is fantastic (and I would never order a meatloaf in a restaraunt but so glad I did!!). My husband had Chicken Parm and there was two big pieces of chicken and very good as well. The waitress, I think Jodi, was great as well. read more
