I visited Sweet Cascades with some family that were visiting town and we took to explore Old Ellicott City. My brother in law was drawn in by the promise of chocolate, but I loved it. It's a tiny shop, but they offer so many beautiful and tasty treats (my husband had a little drinking chocolate; my brother in law got a chocolate truffle filled with pistachio; I got some chocolate covered candied orange rind). The customer service was also wonderful. We chatted with them a bit about the chocolate truffle making classes they offer, and they told us they were celebrating their 20th year in business. Sweet Cascades is located on Main Street in historic Ellicott City. It's a small shop, so depending on the size of your group, some may want to wait outside. The range of chocolate is impressive. This is a local business and they concentrate on their confections for sure. On this particular visit, we'd arrived a day or two after the Harry Potter weekend celebration in historic Ellicott City, so they had chocolate frogs and the cutest golden snitches (truffles) with the wings and gold dust! The line up of the familiar and unusual flavors is broad. It takes us no more than a few minutes for the owner to fill a box of our chosen selections. Peanut Butter Buckeyes, bourbon truffles, chocolate covered Oreos, chocolate covered marshmallows, chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate seasoned with Old Bay or cayenne pepper, chocolate covered nut bark, and so much more. Came here yesterday to get some chocolate cicadas and ended up leaving with some truffles...a rice krispie treat and some chocolate crabs that were supposed to have old bay on it. I wasn't sure if the old any was supposed to be sprinkled on it or of it is mixed into the chocolate but I guess I will find out when I try it. I hope I didn't need to ask for the old bay separately. The cicadas were interesting...kinda hard in certain points from the crunch and chocolate I think. The truffles were beautiful...if anything will bring me back it will be those. The prices seemed good until I got my fab and ended up being close to $50...I don't even know what could of been worth that much. Overall, sweet Cascades is a cute shop to look at while walking around at Historic Ellicott city but I don't think I would be back...the prices are not worth it. read more

A random day exploring Ellicott City led me to this super cute chocolate shop. The two ladies inside greeted us immediately and were super nice and enthusiastic about the chocolates. The store is small but very well put together with plenty of chocolates labeled for your choosing. We decided to purchase the VDay milk chocolate covered pretzels and Oreos. I've always been very curious about truffles and the dessert display behind the glass were filled to plenty of options. I ultimately decided to try (2) which were $3.25 each. The raspberry truffle is enrobed in dark chocolate ganache filled with raspberry fruit paste. The stella rose truffle is enrobed in dark chocolate with a white Belgian chocolate ganache center, infused with essence of rose, and topped with dried rose petals. Each bite was rich and tasty. While delicious, a bit overwhelming in chocolate for me. I however loved the pretzels and Oreos! I'll definitely stop by to try some of the other chocolate covered items. read more

I've been given chocolates here as a gift and they're always delicious and taste freshly made! I was glad to be able to go in person and pick out some tasty treats. The smores were unique and tasty. I also got an assortment of truffles. I love that they had multiple fruit cream flavors to try. The black cherry cream was my favorite. The staff were very sweet and friendly. Stopped in here for the first time last Sunday. The person who served us was very helpful and patient; he gave us a rundown on all of the truffles and recommended his favorites. We tried the strawberry balsamic and orange truffles as well as a chocolate turtle and white chocolate bark with cranberries and walnuts. The caramel turtle was excessively sweet and lacked nuance - the ones at Godiva or Wockenfuss are better. The orange truffle was okay. The strawberry balsamic and white chocolate bark were delicious! I will say, for the price, I'd rather go to Godiva. I don't plan on making this my go-to high-end chocolatier, but I'd return the next time I'm on Main Street. This is a small chocolate shop in the heart of old historic Ellicott city. When you step into the shop you are shot with a smell of sweet chocolate. The store is covered with all sorts of chocolate concoctions. They offer chocolate covered graham crackers to chocolate covered peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. They have rows upon rows of different truffle flavors. They have everything from old bay to lavender. They have rose flavored truffles to sea salt caramels. Their truffles are scrumptious and sweet gems in a chocolate shell. Their chocolate covered pretzels are decadent and very filling. I believe if you are in the historic district of old Ellicott city, you have to stop by this chocolate store. I've been to numerous "chocolate" shops in Maryland only to be disappointed in terms of flavor, or lack of, the presentation of their treats, the prices and the unpleasant vibes you get from the ones selling them. Thank you Lord for allowing me to find this place because not only is it a 10 minute drive from where I live, but also how delicious their treats are! The only con about this place is that it's on Main St. You have to find a parking space either on the side of the street or at their "parking lots". Fortunately, through luck and blessing, I wound up at the parking lot by the Matcha Cafe so the walk wasn't bad. The woman behind the counter (owner?) was very friendly and accommodating and has made a few jokes regarding their unique selection of chocolaty treats. They had so much variety in such a small place that I felt overwhelmed. Thankfully, the woman was very patient and has recommended a few things to me like the White Chocolate covered Pistachios in which I thought were freaking fantastic! The prices of their treats seemed reasonable. I also got a Jack Daniel's Truffle, Chocolate covered Twinkie with sprinkles, a Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Truffle and something else. The JD Truffle tasted like it was marinated in Jack Daniel's for years because that hit me like a truck. Personally, I loved it. The chocolate covered twinkie was awesome as well. Though, I'm not a big fan of sprinkles, it did give another layer of texture due to its crunchiness and the twinkie itself wasn't stale. The DC peanut butter truffle was great as well. Personally, I'm a sucker for anything peanut butter and this was no exception. Everything I had here were nothing short of marvelous. What they could do is give us a bag that is resistant to the hot weather so we can preserve the chocolates a little longer or put the chocolates in a freezer/fridge for a bit before heading out because the sun will melt them thangs fast! By the time I got to my car, both the peanut butter and Jack Daniel's truffles were half way melted. From their extensive variety of treats to the woman's tolerance and friendly attitude, I love this place. Oh and you should check out their backyard! This is my favorite chocolate shop for holiday gifts for my co-workers. I got cicadas when they were available and told everyone they were chocolate covered real cicadas and dared them to eat them. Everyone was relieved when they learned they were all chocolate with rice crispies. I order ahead since I get about 15 orders of something fun. The order is ready when I pick it up which is super convenient. Looking forward to ordering again this holiday season. And definitely getting something for myself when I stop in. Excellent chocolate and an owner was friendly and really into what she does. I'm very indecisive and asked the owner which truffle she would recommend. I was impressed in her passion and got a whole synopsis on about half the options there. I finally settled on the mango truffle and I just had to get the buckeye because peanut butter and chocolate. The staff are happy to let you sample many of the goods before you purchase. Husband and SIL tried their signature bacon chocolate with extra-crisp bacon crumbles, which husband said came close to Vosge's Mo bar. We tried their signature Old Bay chocolate crabs: miniature chocolate crabs infused with Old Bay seasoning. We were skeptical, but they turned out to be divine -- salty, spicy, and peppery contrasting the smooth, sweet, and creamy milk chocolate. You never know what's going to catch your eye when you're walking around Main Street. When my wife decided she wanted some cake, I knew I wanted to check out Sweet Cascades. This little shop has a display case full of chocolates and assorted treats. Nothing approaching cake, but they did have chocolate-dipped twinkies and oatmeal pies. We did opt for the latter and it was just as rich and tasty and decadent as it sounds. The real star of this place is the beautiful rear deck, a tiny hidden nook of an oasis hidden away from the hustle and bustle. It sits right on top of the river, with greenery crawling up the rustic buildings embracing you as you sit and enjoy your treat. And it is as much a treat as anything you pick out of their case. read more

What a beautiful Sunday afternoon to walk around Ellicott with all the funky shops, vintage, antique, etc. It's was our first visit in a long time. On our way back to the car we stopped in to see what this little shop is all about. Boy it is a rather small space. I can't even tell you if the price per pound is expensive, cause I made a bee line dive for the milk chocolate covered graham crackers. And both my husband and I agree that the quality of the chocolate and the freshness of the graham crackers were delicious. Took a star off for the rather brusque demeanor of the clerk behind the counter. I wish I lived closer cause I could do a lot of damage here. Maybe it's better that way. They're not joking around. The chocolate crabs at Sweet Cascades in Ellicott City really taste like Old Bay seasoning. Imagine the sweet and savory sensation of chocolate-covered pretzels. Then the sharper pinch of pepper and paprika that you know well from a table of hard-shelled crabs. When I read about these on the Tales of Two Cities blog, I assumed that the "Old Bay chocolate" was a gimmick -- that the Old Bay would either be barely noticeable or overpowering. But this was an inspired pairing done by someone with a talented hand. The first flavor was chocolate. Really smooth chocolate even in the dark chocolate crabs. Then, the Old Bay kicks in and builds while the chocolates melts on your tongue. In fairness, they weren't universally loved. My wife couldn't finish one. They remind her of Baltimore french fries. All she could think was fries with Old Bay, and that wasn't dessert in her book. However, both enjoyed the dark chocolate truffles and a piece of chocolate with bacon, which was also a novelty that turned out delicious enough to buy again. Loved the bacon. Weird, but strangely good. Loved the truffle. Sweet Cascades makes all its chocolates in the Main Street store, and they're the best that I have had recently. Also consider a chocolate-making class at Sweet Cascades. They will schedule a group for $25 a person. read more

Love the shops in Ellicott City and the chocolatier is one of them. Not necessarily for the tasty chocolate but for the people who work there. They're friendly and welcoming and the attention they give to their customers is top-notch. The chocolate, however, was not my kind of chocolate as far as high-end expensive locally-made chocolate goes. Too much ganache, which wasn't that flavorful, coated in a thin layer of sugary chocolate that reminded me of the chocolate shell that hardens on dipped ice cream. I was expecting a thick outer coating of rich, delectible, smooth chocolate surrounding a healthy dollop of mind-blowing ganache. If you're looking for this type of chocolate, this may not be the shop for you, but if you're looking for a wonderful day at a wonderful little shop and have a hankering for something sweet, this is the place. read more

I love truffles. These are the best truffles I've ever had. Each one was wonderful and true to it's name. They had the perfect bite and texture, and you could literally taste how fresh they were. On a side note, I noticed behind the glass that the "chocolate covered strawberries" weren't there, so I asked why. The man sounded disappointed and replied that they simply couldn't find any strawberries that were up to their standards that morning, so unfortunately they couldn't make them. It was nice to know that they wouldn't try to sell half decent strawberries, like most places seem to do. read more

This is absolutely my favorite chocolatier! The do everything from regular bonbons to things such as old bay crabs, wedgies, "not your momma's apple pie" (it's like you're actually eating apple pie) but the best part is the non-traditional items such as their milk chocolate cereal bars, chocolate covered cheese puffs, chocolate covered Doritos, Jim bean truffles, Jack Daniels truffles and my absolute favorite treat chocolate covered marshmallow ice cream cones! Basically if it's edible they can, will and probably have dipped in chocolate and made it that much better! P.S. If you need a gift for the person that has everything, you should get a bottle of their favorite alcohol (beer, wine, etc) and bring it to the shop and get it decorated and covered completely in chocolate! read more

A nice selection of chocolates here. One of the items that are interesting are their chocolates with spicy salt. The scorpion salt version is SUPER spicy. The ghost chili version is more mild. The macaroons are also very delicious and very large. Definitely want to come back again to try some more things. read more

Barks, handmade truffles, chocolate dipped smores, homemade peanut butter cups, chocolate dipped strawberries... even some adventurous options like chocolate with crumbled bacon and crab-shaped Old Bay chocolates! Dark chocolate peanut butter cups with the creamiest smoothest peanutiest filling.... mmmmm. The truffles (and everything else) are all handmade and are absolutely delicious. Wonderful chocolate shop! Dropped in on a late afternoon stop in Ellicott City and browsed the cases. Massive selection, from the traditional truffle to the weird chocolate dipped Cheetos and Doritos. I picked up a few things- smoretella, a chocolate dipped Nutella smore which was great and I wish I'd bought more than one. Nut barks- almond, pistachio, and cashew which all had a good nut to chocolate ratio (wish I had more of this too). Nutella milk chocolate tea biscuits, and a milk chocolate salty ball (haha). The people were friendly and the prices for handmade goodies was fair for what it was (and that it's a sweet shop in a tourist area). If I'm in the area again I'll stop by for sure. read more
