All that I tried were delicious. The bourbon ball, Ruth's Mint Kentucky Colonel, the pumpkin spice. The business has been around since 1919 and is a fourth-generation KY business. I found their business brochure at the Kentucky welcome center and was intrigued immediately. The story of Ruth Booe and her candy making techniques which led to her and her friend's success. Be sure to try or get some of the original "Bourbon Ball" Invented by Ruth Booe in 1938. It consists of a creamy bourbon center with the kick of real bourbon, covered in dark chocolate, and topped with a Southern pecan. I did taste that kick when I sampled it. I purchased a variety box of make my own as well as some bourbon balls to take back home for family and friends. Got my mom some dark chocolate toffees since she loves toffee. Unfortunately, the food did not join me up there. We started with the nachos, which came with what can only be described as "Velveeta cubes: deconstructed." There were literal chunks of cheese that hadn't even melted. I didn't realize I was ordering nachos with a side of arts and crafts. I ordered the chicken enchiladas, and they were... shy. Very shy. Like they'd heard of seasoning but preferred not to associate with it. I kept waiting for flavor to arrive, but it never found our table. To be fair, my husband got the carnitas and actually liked them so there is hope! And I will absolutely give credit where it's due: the service was fantastic. Our server was friendly, attentive, and the best part of the experience. That said, the prices were bold. Confident. Ambitious. For the quality we received, it just didn't add up. We did the Magnificent tasting and it was very good. They have some top notch Bourbons. If you are visiting Buffalo Trace, do NOT skip J Mattingly that is right across the street. After the tasting we met Jeff the owner. He took us in back and we got to do some barrel sampling. We then did some mixing of the barrels and created our own blend. We purchased 23 bottles of this blend in our own labeled bottles, which will never be created again! Seen was our master bourbon blender and she was so knowledgeable and made this whole experience memorable and unforgettable. We did a tour around where she explained everything. We felt like you were family and we loved how personalized our experience was. It was different than some of the bigger distilleries that felt less personal and more corporate, which made this experience even more special. Our tasting was amazing and we learned a lot about the aging of bourbon and the stave aging that they do at J Mattingly Distillery. Highly recommend checking out this distillery and bringing home some of your favorites home with you!
