This is one of the best bakeries. Their treats are so buttery and taste absolutely delightful. Everything is so beautiful and gives the look of artistry. I love the pineapple coconut cookies. I've eaten them for years. They are delicate yet the flavor of pineapple and coconut work so well together. The cookies are moist and soft. They are such a joy to bite into. This day I also tried the toasted almond cupcake. While beautiful, it was extremely sweet, even for me. I couldn't eat it in one sitting. I don't think I'd ever purchase it again. It does remind you of the good humor toasted almond ice cream bars that were discontinued. But I just wish the topping wasn't so sweet. The cake was blander to complement the icing but it just wasn't for me. If you are looking to host an event or surprise a friend, i think treats from this bakery say I love you! What makes this bakery special is the ability to have ready made cakes daily, if you didn't plan thats alright, there are several sizes available for take out. If not; you can order from their extensive cake menu. Small sitting area if you choose to sit and have a slice of cake in the shop, several flavors available for that!!! So very disappointed! It has been years since I bought a cake at Sweet Maria's. 2 of my kids have birthday's this month so I figured why not. Besides the fact that I spent 62.00 on an 8inch round very berry cake was ridiculous in itself. The cake was nothing like I remember it being years ago. By far the worst frosting I have ever had. You know it is bad when 15 people took a slice and most of it ended up in the garbage. The frosting was nasty. My daughter said it tasted like wax smells. It tasted nothing like whipped cream. I've seen Sweet Maria's as the Connecticut selection on a Best Place for Cookies in Every State List. That list touted Sweet Maria's Pignoli Nut Cookie as their most popular. Today, I put this distinction to the test. Sweet Maria's is located in a nondescript shopping plaza not far from Brass Mill Mall. Service was friendly and the shop was colorful. I ordered a box of small cookies for my family to sample. The box included Pignoli Cookies, Coconut Fruit Pinwheels, Chocolate Chip, White Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Gingersnap and Oatmeal Raisin. The cookies were tasty. The Pignoli and Pinwheels were my two favorite, and the Gingersnap was a a close third. They were fresh and well-executed. The white chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies tasted good, but did not taste as fresh. The chocolate chip cookies were not quite as good as the Pignoli and Pinwheels, but they were pretty good. I didn't try the others. I don't think Sweet Maria's cookies are the best in the State like the List did. I liked their cookies and they were above average, but I've recently had two cookies in the Greater Hartford area I liked better than any of Sweet Maria's cookies. Sweet Maria's also makes cakes, cupcakes, biscotti and other desserts. They all looked very good. If you're in the Waterbury area, Sweet Maria's is worth checking out. Four Stars read more

My mom recently got me a cake from here for my birthday I was really excited about. The cake was gorgeous and everything I asked for but completely lacked in flavor. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the chocolate cake or chocolate buttercream. However, the chocolate mousse filling was tasty. Small bakery that does not look like much from the outside (it is in a rundown strip mall), but that has phenomenal cakes and cupcakes. They don't have a TON of different goodies that you can buy when you go in, but their selection is decent. You have to order their cakes in advance, and if you do decide to order in advance they have a much larder selection of additional treats that they can make as well. In addition to their cupcakes and cakes they also have a wide variety of cookies, biscotti, and a few other baked goods, however I tried their chocolate chip cookies and was not a fan. I have to say that I was very happy with the taste and texture of the cupcakes. They are very well known in the Naugatuck Valley area. Used to love this place, but it isn't what it used to be, and the cost is ridiculous. I ordered a cake for my daughter and wanted flowers piped on the side. I wanted fondant mushrooms too, but they don't do anything 3D. I ordered the cake with textured frosting (picture I sent looked like tree bark) and flowers. Price was $87 ("because of the extra decoration") for a ten inch cake. Pricey but I figured I was getting a really nicely decorated cake. When I got the cake, it was plain green, not a single flower. Picture attached. I called to complain and they said the extra 30 I paid was to tint the frosting green and to "texture" the frosting. After a disastrous experience with a venue-provided cake for my sister's bridal shower several years ago, I decide to order a custom cake for her baby shower. A friend recommended Sweet Maria's and assured me that the cookies n' cream was a surefire 'crowd pleaser.' So, I called Sweet Maria's a couple months in advance of the event to place the order and the woman who answered the phone quickly asked "Is this a wedding cake?" I said it wasn't, and explained it was for a baby shower. She responded that I only needed to call 1-2 days in advance to place my order, so I hung up. I was convinced that there was some sort of misunderstanding, so a couple of days later, I called again. Again, I was immediately asked "Is this a wedding cake?" This time, I explained it was for a baby shower, but that I had a very specific design in mind and asked if I could email her some photographs for reference. She provided me with the email address and I said I'd call back after I sent it. I sent my email with the details of the cake design I wanted, accompanied by a sample photo, and followed up with another phone call. We discussed the details and she repeated them back to me. The cake - large enough to feed 50-60 people - was $105. I couldn't believe it was so cheap. She took my credit card information, as I was having friends pick it up for me. So, fast-forward to the event.. The cake (see the pink/brown 'Congratulations Melissa' photo) was ready to be picked up on time and traveled extremely well. Although the design captured the elements as we'd discussed, it was a little different than what I had originally envisioned, but was still beautiful. However beautiful it was, when I dug into my (first) piece, I was in cake-orgasm. The butter cream frosting was smooth and delicious, the chocolate cake was moist, and the crushed Oreo cookies and cream filling was an ethereal experience. I wanted to devour the entire cake! As my friend initially suggested, it was indeed a crowd-pleaser and I was extremely excited that there was enough cake to feed our crowd of 50 AND have leftovers to take home. So I was chosen to be maid of honor for my sister's wedding. I am not at all wedding savvy- I have no desire to ever get married and I usually send my condolences when I hear news of engagements. So everyone was nervous about the shower I would throw. I decided I wanted to prove them wrong. I chose a less traditional, lime green with black and white damask theme. Just to show I could throw a good shower, I had to get a cake to match. My mother recommended Sweet Maria's- everything I heard about the place was wonderful. They were very kind when ordering, and I emailed them pictures of what I had in mind for the cake. It came out STUNNING (check the pics!). It was the biggest hit at the shower and just looked amazing. I ordered a cake for about 40 people, and I swear it was large enough to feed at least 80. The cake itself was absolutely delicious! I am not usually a fan of bakery cakes- I prefer Betty Crocker any day to a wedding or shower cake. But this cake was perfect- it tasted homemade. The butter-cream frosting was delicious and didn't just taste like globs of pure sugar. And the berry filling tasted fresh and real- I hate that fake strawberry flavor places use! Best thing of all- the magnificent cake was only $85! I found people online that paid hundreds for similar looking cakes that probably tasted like cardboard! After reading Moriahs review I was reminded of this nearby Italian bake shop that i had not yet been to - and took a quick trip up the street from the office to sample a few of Sweet Maria's cupcakes and cookies. The place is pretty straight forward, located in a small industrial looking strip mall with an awkward parking lot, but overall pretty easy to find and not difficult to get to if you are in Waterbury. The sugary sweet smell of the bake shop was present as soon as you exit your car, and walking into the store you see some great cakes and a few cases with cookies, biscotti, cupcakes, and more .. so many choices. The store staff was friendly and helpful,eager to tryi to help me decide which cupcakes and cookies i was going to take home today.. The smell of fresh baked goods is always nice. I ordered one of each cupcake they had, and a few cookies. The cookies were on the small side, but overall not bad - the chocolate chip cookie had a salty taste that was a little unexpected. The cupcakes we had - one chocolate with chocolate butter creme frosting and filling , one vanilla with vanilla butter creme frosting and a berry filling, and a carrot cake cup cake full of walnuts, carrot shreds and chocolate chips (never had a chocolate chip carrot cake before, but personally i think it was better than the typical raisins) .. the cupcakes werent too big, but they weren't too pricey either - i think it was 2 bucks each cupcake, which is a bit less than similar sized cupcakes in NYC (but this isn't nyc) - a good value. the cake wasn't too moist, really a little on the dry side - and the frosting wasnt too rich or cremey - just sweet and pastey. I will definitely be going back to see what other cupcakes they make here, and trying some more cookies and biscotti .. a good Italian style bakery, wish there were more like this around here! and now I know where to locally order spectacular cakes from! read more

I'd bought some delicious treats from Sweet Maria's in the past but since it's in Waterbury (and a bit of a drive from me in Hartford), it's been a while since I've enjoyed their fabulous cupcakes and cookies. I'd never had any of the cakes until my husband brought some home earlier this week. I've never eaten such a perfect dessert before. Light, fluffy white cake layered generously with clouds of cream and fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. If I'm enjoying it this much during a rainy week in April, I can only imagine what an exquisite summer treat this would be! After looking (aka swooning over) their cake menu online, it doesn't look like you can go wrong with the fabulous sounding flavors. As for other desserts, I love their lemon coconut cupcake and raspberry walnut cookies. It's probably a good thing Sweet Maria's is kind of a drive, otherwise I'd be in trouble. read more

First time getting a cake from here. Let me start by saying I will order from here again. I ordered the 8 inch Very Berry cake. Nice light fluffy cake inside, with 2 layers of fresh mixed berries/whipped cream, outside iced with whipped cream also. The filling was plentiful and NOT mushy, which I've found can happen with fruit filled cakes. Every one a compliment that it was "not to sweet". A good thing for us! Past experience with this bakery was always good; but In recent years, I've had to go gluten-free. Heard they now offer gluten-free cake, so I ordered a birthday cake to be picked up on a Saturday. By Monday morning, the vanilla pudding filling in the cake had soured. The cake was refrigerated the entire time. When we called to inform them, the person who answered the phone did not seem fazed - she told us that the cake is made to be consumed in one day. (Maybe they should tell the customer this?)
