I was very excited to try this place for their custard tarts and other goodies but was pretty unimpressed. We came in early Saturday morning would've expected a lot of fresh goodies. I got some custard tarts, mini cannolis(regular and chocolate chip, slice of tiramisu and a slice of the cookie and cream. Custard tart 3/5 It's my first time trying a Portugese custard tart but had eaten plenty of Portugese egg tarts( from Asian bakeries). The tart crust was only a little flaky and chewy. The custard wasn't creamy or eggy but just very sweet. I tried heating it back up and cold. It was just ok. Cakes 1/5 Both cakes tasted like it's been in the fridge for a while. The cake wasn't soft or fluffy. The filling and cream was harder than expected. The top tasted like fondant mixed with icing. It was strange textures in my mouth and was kind of disappointing. I even tried to let it sit at room temperature for a little to see if the cream would soften but it didn't help. Cannolis 3/5 They weren't bad. They tasted like cannolis. Wasn't impressed with my visit, but I am not sure if it was the time that I came? I would expect the freshest goods on a Saturday morning. It is located in a strip with ample parking. read more

I got some cookies from here and they were great! I liked the ones with chocolates especially. This place gets very busy on weekends, so plan accordingly. The only reason why I didn't five 5 stars was because of the staff members. They were not so friendly. I didn't know how to order what since I don't usually go to Italian bakeries, and the staff member gave me a look to rush the order. This morning at 6:30am I walk in and ask for 6 Portuguese rolls. The guy unties the big bag of rolls and starts putting in bag for me. I said wait a minute, are those yesterdays rolls? He said yes. I said if I wanted yesterday's rolls I would have come yesterday. I am here at 6:30am for rolls that are fresh from today. To think this place is selling yesterdays bread at FULL price is shocking to me. Most bakeries either donate leftover to shelters or sell the next day at a discounted price. Nope, not this place! They give you yesterdays bread and hope you don't notice. I understand all the cakes and pastries are days old but the bread??? Seriously???? Nope I will never go back. They have Boars Head! Awesome! And cookies, cakes..oh my, the list just goes on. For about 8 or 9 dollars you get get dozens of cookies. And they have every kind of cookie imaginable. I was directed here by a few locals who told me how yummy it is. They were certainly correct! You almost do not want to eat anything because the displays are so pretty. See pics. I stopped in for some bread. First time here. Impulse bought a custard pastry and a glazed donut for my drive. The pastry was fine but the donut was awful. So awful I had to call them and let them know seconds after that first bite, which I made myself swallow like an idiot because I didn't have a convenient place to spit it out. The woman who took the call asked if I still had the donut to which I replied I did. She said she would refund or exchange it. I said the dollar-something wasn't as important as them pulling the donuts from the case. The donut tasted like rancid oil. Not a hint of rancid.. RANCID. I had the great displeasure of burping up the taste of rancidity for the next few hours after that one small bite. It had a stale bready/mealy texture. Not fresh, and this was before noon. I let her know, rancidity produces free radicals ..which cause cancer. read more

Someone just needs to enforce or even make an attempt to enforce the Covid rules in here. One young woman behind the counter covered her mouth only, and left her schnoz to swing freely while she sliced meat and fetched bread-not cool. They have blue tape on the floor to indicate customers should stand behind it to order, pay etc. the first time I went post pandemic, i didn't notice it. A sign at eye level or a verbal reminder once in a while to stay behind the blue line would keep everyone safer. Normally I find the service there otherwise to be pretty good and I understand they are young employees, but someone needs to speak up. Today while I was inside an older, not very clean looking, man came in through the wrong door, no mask, bounced right on up to the counter past the tape, leaned over the glass, rubbed his nose several times with his fingers and touched the glass counter with his hands while spewing droplets all over the place. It was absolutely disgusting and the girl with the exposed nose served him. Though they kind of deserve each other's germs, I hope they both stay safe. It was extremely gross though and until the employees or the owner makes an attempt to remind/enforce safety i won't be back. Oh and some of the cupcakes we bought were stale. Thier food is good half the time but the other half is just terrible. Almost no one working there cares at all about getting your order right and they get it wrong more often than not . All they have to do is write down your order and have some decent people hired and they would be good but ive been going there for years out of necessity and they just never improve. read more

I bring my mom and grandma a few times a month after appointments for lunch.Our family loves it here especially for the thick sandwiches and Boars Head meat. Lately, when I go in there are young girls on their phones while others are working with a line. Unacceptable and unprofessional. I went in about 2 weeks ago and ordered a hard salami sandwich for both my mom and grandma by a girl whose name starts with a L. I forgot the spelling, I do apologize... When they got home, my grandma told me she had plastic in her sandwich. My mom opened hers and not only dis she have 4 small slices of meat but every slice had plastic on it. I had to go to work so I called up and a girl by the name of Crystal was very nice and said she apologizes and to come in for 2 sandwiches on them. I went in the next day to talk to Crystal but she wasnt working. Instead I talked to Sharon who was more than apologetic and was wiling to fix the issue. When I asked to see the salami to ensure my family wouldn't be eating plastic I saw that there were 3 or 4 opened salamis. With management not there and letting their young staff (not all but most) just know your product is being wasted and not only did I come back but 2 others during my 10 minute visit came in as well. It's a shame and I hate writing these but hopefully someone sees this because things need to operate differently. Thanks to Sharon for the experience I was used to, we will be back... I ordered a sliced round portuguese bread and a few pastries. The pastries looked fine but were almost inedible!? The bread was sliced (hacked) by an old machine that needs servicing. The slices were all irregular and the middle slices were ripped. The bread was tasteless and the texture was crumbly? We will not be shopping there again...Disappointing! read more

The food is great. Good deli sandwiches, delicious bakery items. My family especially raves about the muffins and cookies. I normally get a ham sandwich with cheddar for lunches, which is reliably good. The service, on the other hand, varies from excellent to dismal, depending on who is working and who serves you. Some are quite generous and careful with your food. Others are quite parsimonious and careless. Best advice is to watch them closely in case you get one of the bad apples. read more

I waited 10 minutes behind two people for my order to be taken, one was only a pickup and the other had already been waited on before I arrived . I ordered a bacon egg and cheese that was almost $4. Lucia and Tony are amazing at what they do. I wish this picture would post not rotated, but it doesn't matter. We called them up, asked if they were able to make a cake with wolves on it and that is all the info we gave them. They asked what we wanted for cake flavor, filling flavor etc and this is the outcome. It blew us all away. We thought we were going to get some kind of wolf in frosting. Not at all what we got. The birthday boy was completely blown away and it was a huge success. The cake was moist and delicious, there was nothing left. I was told that Chaves Bakery is a terrible place for employees. They make them work 8+ hours with no break/lunch break, which is ILLEGAL and make them work when they're sick. I was told by one of the employees that one of the bakers had strep throat and was still at work making cakes. I wouldn't want my food from a sick person. They wear gloves to make sandwiches, but use the same gloves to handle money without changing them. They are not a clean bakery. I've had a few cakes and pastries and enjoyed those as well. If there is a line, expect to wait a solid 20 minutes. They do not know how to handle a crowd. They also tend to use additional toppings on your sandwich that you didn't ask for- it's annoying to clarify the info or (worse) get back to work and find out your sandwich is covered in something you don't like. Disappointing. Chaves has long been one of the better bakery chains in Fairfield County but this one in Shelton, not so much. Portuguese rolls have long been their trademark but they just can't get it right with any consistency. One day they're good, the next they're way undersized. Often times, they are stale. Today, they were overcooked to the point of tasting like cardboard. And it's not just the rolls. They have apple fritters which were great at one time. All of a sudden, they were half the normal size. Same price. And their potato salad is often excellent. Unless it's not. These guys are all over the place. No quality control. It's a crapshoot.
