My wife and I stopped by Sweet Nothings on Friday after seeing all the great reviews, and we're glad we did. It was a little tricky to find thanks to Android Auto sending us through a nearby residential area, but once we got there, parking was easy. The shop itself is cute and very small, definitely geared more toward carryout, although there are a couple of chairs where we sat and enjoyed our treats. The owner was working and couldn't have been nicer. She walked us through the different cupcakes, including the miniature versions, and you can tell she takes a lot of pride in what she makes. We each tried three cupcakes, and I also had a brookie (brownie x cookie), which was delicious. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. It's not inexpensive, but we thought the quality made it a good value. Six cupcakes plus the brookie came to just over $20. Such a cute bakery! The simplicity and quaint decor welcome you in. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Isabel. She was so sweet and friendly. We ordered the mini cupcake flight for $16.50 so far have tried the red velvet cheesecake, and mini vanilla cheesecake. Although mini, the flavors were big! Moist, with the perfect amount of sweet and crunch. I'm sad this place isn't closer to me. But we'll make our way out here nonetheless. Okay, this place is located in Duarte in a nondescript strip mall in the middle of a nondescript street. You would never think to come here just driving by. I don't know why I did pull over and go in a few months back, except my son goes to a HS nearby. I don't live in Duarte. The food I've tried around there has been less than exceptional on a general basis. Nonetheless, I decided to just pull in and give it a try, and I don't usually eat desserts. I like looking at them and fantasizing about eating them, but after actually eating a savory meal, I'm usually too full and don't want any dessert. I'm rambling. So, anyway, I got a box of mini cupcakes, so I could try most of their flavors, as well as a few brookies (blondies and chocolate chip cookies melded together as 1/2 and 1/2). First of the brookies are to die for. I have been looking for something similar since moving from NYC, where a similar item sold at the Film Forum and I ate way too many of in my youth. The cupcakes were also across the board fantastic. I hate overly sweet cupcakes. I want my cupcake to be sweet but tempered so they don't sicken me or make my teeth ache, like most respected places (looking at you Sprinkles, Cristina Tosi, and most high end cupcake joints). Everything was truly out of this world. They also do special cupcakes for the holidays, but you have to order these in advance, so sign up to their IG or if they have a website. I follow them on IG so see the posts sometimes. They also have cookies. I think I got one chocolate chip for my son and he also loved it, but I truly cannot remember. I've been back so many times since I first went. One thing to know is they have a loyalty program, so get a card the first time you go. Placed an order a month in advance and they were able to accommodate with my request. Came to pick up the topper and in amaze of how modern and nice the shop looked, it was very clean, well organized, simple and welcoming. Also tried two of their mini cupcakes red velvet and cookies and cream ($2.50 each) they were delicious, not too sweet and the cream is well paired the cake itself was fluffy and airy. I guess a lot of these shops use box cakes... is this the norm? If they aren't I would be very surprised... The frosting to cake ratio is off for me too but that's a preference I guess... too much frosting and not enough cake. For the quality, these cupcakes are definitely overpriced. Customer service was okay. Both times I've gone it was dead and we were the only customers and the person seemed rushed and like they wanted us to hurry up so they could go back to the store. I hate to leave a low star review but I guess in this area people are okay with mediocre since there are no other real competitors around (I know there are a few but also felt the same about those shops). It was an underwhelming experience overall. Would give lower stars but don't want to be attacked for my honest review but the people thinking this place is a 5 star. I received an email today (11/24) before the event stating they will not be able fulfill the order due to it being a Holiday. Which is acceptable and I completely understand... What is not acceptable, is not receiving a response on 11/21, 11/22, or 11/23 stating it cannot be completed. Therefore giving a reasonable amount of time to make arrangements elsewhere.
