I applied to join Sweeten over four months ago, paid the required application fee, and submitted client references as requested. Since then, I've received little to no communication, despite multiple follow-up attempts. When I finally did receive a response--after questioning whether Sweeten truly supports minority, woman-owned businesses as they claim--I was simply told my application was still "under review." That was months ago, and there has been no update since. Sweeten took my money without providing any meaningful communication, clear timeline, or accountability. Even worse, they have refused to share the customer reviews submitted on my behalf--reviews that my clients took time to write to support my business. If they don't intend to move forward, the least they could do is return those reviews and refund my fee. This process has been incredibly frustrating and unprofessional. As a business owner who values integrity and transparency, I expected more from a platform that claims to champion diversity and small business. I went to one of Sweeten's "meet contractors" events, drank 1 free beer Turned out to be one of the most expensive beers of my life!:( They put me in touch with "Deo Singh" contractors, whom they vouched for, saying he was "one of their highest rated contractors" I have had several "bad contractor" experiences (as have most homeowners unfortunately) which is why I needed Sweeten to qualify one Sweeten was part of the negotiation process of the job and pricing, and reviewed the contract that Deo Singh and I signed Initially everything went well, Deo was doing a good job, on time, not asking for more $, and getting paid by me on time and in full (ie 2 payments of $4000 each for milestones renovating my kitchen) However, as many bad contractors do, once he had completed 50% of the job, he demanded abusive amounts of $ to just show up and finish the work. They must figure they have you in a bad place, with your kitchen torn up and not usable, so then they can abuse you for more $ At this point, I asked Kerry my rep to get involved, and after being cc'd on a dozen emails between me and Deo where we were trying to agree on a $ amount for any excess work he already performed, and any increase in the contract for $ to be paid for future work, Kerry said "we (meaning Sweeten) don't get involved in negotiations or disputes between contractors and clients" This is BIZARRE because Sweeten was part of the process, and put us in touch with each other, and took a 10% commission as their fee. If they are then going to wash their hands of everything when there IS a dispute, what "service" am I paying for, and what are they taking that 10% for? So I am left hanging out to dry, and by myself (with zero help from Sweeten) agree to pay Deo $1000 for past overages, which I feel was overly generous (like he demanded $500 to open one window to allow the delivery of a cabinet, when he agreed that opening and closing it took about 10 minutes of his time each way), and $1000 in pre-payments for things he hadn't yet done (like putting the door onto my fridge). Again, Kerry is cc'd on all emails, but when I ask her what she thinks she says "to be honest, I haven't had a chance to read all those emails between you and Deo". WTH? Isn't it HER JOB to read ALL of these emails, and comment/reply to all on a few with her opinion (she did this NEVER) Deo cashes my checks, so now I've paid him $10,000 on a job that was contracted at $7,000. Yet, he still refuses to return to the job. Will Kerry help get him to complete his contract? Of course not. Apparently, she will keep her 10% = $1,700 whether Deo finishes or doesn't finish the job, which gives her the perverse incentive to not read any emails or reply to any or do ANYTHING to help get this project completed Then Deo tries to take me to collections, I email the collection agency some pictures of my demolished unfinished kitchen, and the collection rep actually LAUGHS on the phone and says "don't worry, it's crazy that he is claiming you owe him the $7000 balance when your job is not even halfway done--we won't be taking him on as a client" I email Deo saying if he annoys me ONE MORE TIME with an attempt to collect this BS fantasy $ amount that I owe him, I will post negative reviews about both his service and Sweeten, and then he INVOICE me for $7000--hence the review To be 100% clear, I am the #1 LASEK surgeon in the USA, have a net worth of almost $20,000, and really don't care about $7000; I donate about $50,000/year to charity (eg V-Day to prevent violence against women, Fordham University, the Dartmouth Club of NY, DNC, Nature Conservancy, Catholic Charities, etc). I am VERY BUSY and was going to let Deo and Sweeten get away with HORRIBLE SERVICE bc I am TOO BUSY to post negative reviews However, the last straw was Deo taking me to collections, and Sweeten doing NOTHING to help resolve this issue. Kerry and her "team" have not called, emailed or texted me for SIX MONTHS. She KNOWS that Deo and I have already threatened to SUE each other, she KNOWS my kitchen is STILL NOT DONE, and has been ccd on EVERYTHING but will not LIFT A FINGER TO HELP. Sweeten has not even asked me to leave feedback on their "system" about Deo, which means he remains one of their "highest rated contractors" because they do not want to accurately lower his rating, or they can't foist him on another unsuspecting client who is stupidly counting on Sweeten to actually qualify the contractors they recommend AVOID SWEETEN AT ALL COSTS. They were supposed to give my wife a call at noon to discuss our renovation project. They never called, and instead sent an auto-email apologizing about getting "disconnected." They said they left a voicemail to reconnect next week because they're fully booked until then. There was no voicemail or even missed calls... We had planned our daughter's lunch and nap around this meeting, so it's disappointing they didn't even bother calling us and invented an excuse. EDIT: it was "Lola" from clientservices@sweeten.com that ghosted my wife, Samantha. It was not a GC - we hadn't even gotten that far in the process to be matched with one! EDIT 2: They reached back out so to correct the issue so I updated my review, but I think we're still going to go another way regardless. read more

My wife and I used sweeten to find a contractor for our renovation that we did in 2017/2018 on our first house that we bought. We highly regret having trusted this company to screen contractors. Sweeten suggested three contractors to us, one of which did not seem to work on jobs of the size we were doing (a gut renovation of our entire first floor of the house), including new systems. The contractor we unfortunately did hire, who turned out to literally be a con artist and completely incompetent, somehow got through Sweeten's vetting process, which suggests there are serious issues with how they vet contractors. Our experience with Sweeten was that they were mostly concerned with getting the deal signed (offering us incentives up front to try to get us to sign quickly with a contractor), then after that mostly concerned with marketing. Sweeten kept reaching out to us to ask if they could come take pictures of the renovation, and to be fair, they did send a couple emails asking us how it was going on the project, which they claim was their way of checking in. Since these emails came in between requests for pictures I suspected it was just more marketing from them, or to see if the job size had changed so they could charge more to the contractor. Which gets to the other issue. They charge contractors 6% of the total cost of the project, which means that you pay 6% more just to use Sweeten. I don't think our contractor ever paid Sweeten, but he also wasn't paying his bottom of the barrel sub contractors either. This contractor we found through them did so many things wrong that we have had to spend over $60,000 correcting his mistakes, which has been a huge financial burden for us. When we complained to Sweeten about our issues, after we had sued the contractor for failing to finish the job we paid him for, Sweeten took no accountability and offered zero compensation for their failure to adequately vet this contractor. Their logic was that we didn't respond to their inquiries about how the job was going, so they can't help us after the fact. Convenient logic for them. Long story short, do not trust Sweeten, and if you do trust them, I still do suggest not using them due to the fact that you pay a premium for their mediocre service. We did a renovation this year on our second floor and just used google reviews and have had an amazing experience. Everyone we hired has been great and super professional, which is the opposite experience we had with our Sweeten contractor. read more

I would HIGHLY recommend the team I chose (Xtrategy Inc, located in MD) to anyone looking for home renovations. The owner, Alberto, is extremely knowledgeable and thorough in all steps of the process. I also appreciated how personable he was (his colleague, Paulo, too!) and enjoyed his mindfulness and involvement of my 6yr. old. He set realistic deadlines and was flexible when we needed to amend them. For the most part, I knew exactly what I wanted. I hired a contractor on a huge renovations project through this company and this contractor turned out to be a complete nightmare. I spoke to Sweeten from the very beginning of the project when things were off to a rocky start. Initially Sweeten wanted to give it some time and see if things improved. When things didn't improve and actually got much much worse Sweeten literally started acting like legal counsel for the contractor. What I mean by that is that I would provide specific evidence like email exchanges and documents that I sent to the contractor detailing work I needed done in the apartment. Sweeten would look at this information and arbitrarily state that it's normal for the contractor to charge extra for these things (even though they were outlined in my quote and architectural drawings and the contract!). Literally Sweeten would not take any responsibility for tens of thousands of dollars worth of charges that were all for things that were clearly addressed in writing with the contractor before any work started. Some of these things were even listed in the original quote request submitted through their website! All they did was shrug it off and say that they are not sure what to tell me...we just need to improve lines of communication with our contractor. Our experience with the company was appalling. It's a company that serves the contractors under the pretense of providing a service to consumers. Be aware and don't use this company to book contractors. Don't trust reviews on their site either. Considering their customer service I'm quite certain that they only post positive contractor reviews and delete the negative ones for their contractor "partners." read more

Working with the Sweeten was among the worst business interactions I've had. I don't like writing negative reviews, but when someone says one thing, does another, and you're the one who has to live with their irresponsibility, it feels responsible to let people know what they're getting into. I know someone who works there. He recommended a contractor and told me a price that contractor could hold it to. The contractor said the job could possibly take under a month, maybe a little longer. I know construction can hit snags, so delays and overruns could happen. The contractor didn't even show up the first day and things didn't get better. They were terrible. The biggest issue was that they took five months, still weren't finished, and kept saying it would take only a day or two more work (meaning they didn't understand how much work was left, since they weren't close to finishing) and were about 50% over budget when I switch contractors to someone not related to the Sweeten. Switching contractors mid-job is risky, so I only decided to do it after the crew the Sweeten recommended was so incompetent that keeping them was riskier. Examples: they installed a wall at the wrong angle (and told me they were doing me a favor to fix their mistake), installed tiles with glue, causing them to break when the plumber tried to put a sink in, misaligned cabinetry so the drawers wouldn't slide, installed the floor so it buckled when the weather got warm, broke things, would show up to buy materials without bringing the notes for what to get, and so on. I'm writing this review months after they last left because things they did are still breaking. But this review is about the Sweeten, not the contractor. The Sweeten, which told me they could hold a price before the work started, changed their tune once the work started. Then they told me that price was impossibly low to hold -- I felt like they baited and switched on me. I took that contractor at that price on their recommendation and they walked away from any responsibility. I thought to write this review on their site, but they took my job off their site, so if their site looks like every job goes well... well, probably because they take off jobs where they tell you one thing and do another. You probably want responsibility and accountability more than anything when you work on your home. The Sweeten gives the opposite. If you want a contractor, I recommend not using the Sweeten. Not only did they recommend a contractor with 2 1/2 stars on the BBB but the person never finished the work we hired them for. Once Steve Lauer from "The Basement Men" took our first check he only ever came over to ask for more money. Before he even started any work he asked us to give him a positive review for a $200 discount. We declined since we didn't think it would be right to review something in advance of any work being completed. He never looked over the work that was being done, checked progress, or even bothered to check for quality. He was so disorganized in his work that there was never any schedule made or even a punch list of tasks to be completed. The work that should have been finished at the end of February was not completed until mid-March. I've been on job sites before where things may go wrong but it's usually up to the project manager, in this case, Steve, to check over the work and have things fixed or redone the right way. The reason Steve doesn't do this is that once he has your money he doesn't care about anything else. I can also tell that he's never done any work himself so he wouldn't know how to fix anything or direct any work anyway. If you think you're hiring an expert when you're hiring Steve, think again. This man has no experience or any interest in doing the job right. The guys he subcontracted seem to figure things out as they went along, coming and going as they pleased with no regard for our work schedules or the fact that we were living in the condo at the time of the renovation. To say that I regret hiring him would be the understatement of the century. I've worked with many different groups of people and contractors and never have I been treated so badly or verbally abused like I was with Steve Lauer. I should have known when I saw Steve's work contract, thrown together in Microsoft word, that he was going to be very unprofessional. When we met him he showed up with a picture binder and seemed very nice at first. He chatted with my fiancé about how he inherited the business from his father and being business owners ourselves, we thought we would give Steve the opportunity. What I should have done is researched a lot more and asked him for references in addition to digging up a little more information on him myself. We made the mistake of paying for everything upfront and because of all his irrational behavior we were scared that he would never finish the job and just scam us out of our money. When all was said and done is was a horrible experience that I would not wish on anyone. It looks ok at a first glance until you actually use the bathrooms and notice everything that's wrong with it. Our first bathroom has an uneven floor, missing tiles, uneven grout lines, everything was very messy and uneven. There are tiles sticking up where they shouldn't, they also wasted tons of material and filled in mistakes with grout so we wouldn't notice. They were very very deceptive. We paid for them to paint the ceiling with a moisture-resistant paint and they painted it with regular paint instead of what we specifically asked and paid for. They damaged the door and millwork/trim and left us a sink with a missing stopper. Any time we gave Steve any feedback, made suggestions, or asked any questions he became extremely agitated. Having been on the other side of this kind of job before I can say that asking for the work to be done the right way is by no means an unreasonable request, a good remodeler always should be willing to make things right for their customer. I doubt that Steve ever gets any referrals or repeat clients, he preys on naive homeowners that expect him to know what he's doing and once he's done with one he moves onto the next unsuspecting victim.The tile work in our kitchen by far the easiest job on the list was also done wrong. The contractor installed broken tiles and tried to mask his mistakes with grout. He also cut our kitchen faucet and refused to replace it or take any responsibility. Once the kitchen and hallway bathrooms were done I called Steve to ask for a meeting to go over all the work that had been done and everything that we would do going forward. He would not give me a date or time to meet over the phone and kept trying to evade the topic while getting very agitated and raising his voice to me repeatedly. I maintained my calm through the conversation but eventually had to hang up on Steve since he got more and more disrespectful. Unfortunately, that wasn't the last of it because after our phone call ended he called me back to yell at me once again. All of this is documented and recorded. In the video, you can clearly hear how he antagonizes and screams at me on the phone. In the end, he didn't even bother to finish the job even though we paid for it. Thank the renovation gods for Sweeten! I can't recommend this service and their awesome employees highly enough. The process of being matched with a contractor was seamless and exceedingly simple. What surprised me the most was how much support Sweeten gave me during the process. I had a some issues with my contractor's project management faults, and it was invaluable that I could reach out to Sweeten for their support and guidance. Since this was my first renovation, I can't imagine having gone through the project without Sweeten. If I had hired my contractor directly, I likely would have been coordinating everything myself and it would have been a thousand times more stressful. Sweeten provides amazing counsel and backup. Employees went out of their way to visit the site, continually coordinate with my contractor, and even help with the final cleaning. They were ready to do whatever was needed to get my project done. I would tell anyone considering a renovation that using Sweeten for a contractor is a must. Their value-add is immeasurable. And their staff is amazing. read more

Also, notice that all of the high ratings on Yelp seem to be aggregated around the same date, so I question how genuine those ratings are. I'm a bit surprised at the negative reviews on this site as I have to say my experience was anything but. What is great to me about this service is that it makes the idea of finding a contractor simpler. I had tried to go through some friend referrals but most of my friends do not own, much less renovate. I asked neighbors but I wasn't really impressed with any of the contractors they put me in touch with. When I stumbled onto this site, it was so much easier than I thought it would ever be. Within a day I had responses and within a few weeks I made a decision. The contractors I met and matched with all seemed solid. I was able to look at their work online and check referrals. It offered a bit of comfort since I wasn't entirely confident in embarking on the renovation. Overall I met with 5 contractors, who I met with on site, and received all the estimates in a timely manner. Interestingly enough, I ended up going with Ecostruct, a company I stumbled upon when I was perusing the site. I contacted Sweeten to see if Ecostruct would be interested in this match and luckily for me, they were and I am extremely happy with the results. Throughout the process, Sweeten reps would email checking in with me and my progress and were able to offer advice when I wasn't entirely sure of certain steps. I felt very taken care of and would happily recommend this site to anyone who is looking to renovate their home. read more

I saw Apartment Therapy featuring their projects and immediately posted my job with them. My budget was quite generous and they were very persistent matching me with contractors after sending me 3 contractors (carpenters) that were unsuitable for the magnitude of the scope or were sensible enough to say they were busy with other jobs. Since accepting their GC that insisted his availability, my project is still incomplete and its almost nearing 2 years. It's been treated as if it was a pro bono and I've even paid my 3rd deposit since I didn't want to risk more $$$ starting over elsewhere. You can't ever get ahold of them over the phone. They never track the progress whatsoever as they led you to believe. I would of thought they would be featuring progress jobs daily on their blog, but no! You'll notice there is not a single negative blog post on a job that went wrong. I've tried updating my progress photo's but their site wouldn't allow me to do that and I suspected something shady going on. My issue is with the Sweeten not their contractors since they claimed to prescreened them. After complaining didn't go anywhere, I started looking through their matched/progress pictures weekly and noticed that many of these projects don't have any progress photo's after getting matched a year ago. They only have a shortlist of contractors and have matched more jobs than their contractors can handle. You would think that they would screen the contractors thoroughly to make sure they aren't overbooking them with more than 1 job at a time since they have other projects and job obligations outside of Sweeten. If I had to start over, I would look elsewhere. Perhaps through houzz, the University or local community development group for leads. read more

Trying to find a contractor in NYC was a very daunting experience. I tried craigslist, I tried my own organic web search, I even had a few personal references but none of those routes worked. All 3 came over to view my space and give me an estimate in person, and all 3 were legit, fair estimates. Sweeten was a godsend for my renovation project. I was able to connect with an excellent contractor as well as a design team who were previous clients of said contractor. The way I found out about Sweeten was through a previous client who'd had her apartment renovated through Sweeten. The platform is a great idea - having a list of previously vetted service providers and a visual directory of the work that they've done and a way for the clients to vet those providers. Doing this independently going through Angie's List or Houzz would not have been as efficient or focused and would have consumed way more of my time in the project planning. When I posted my project parameters, I was able to interview three contractors and chose Sweeten Expert Kris as my contractor. His team was great to work with and they got my large project completed on time and with quality. We've just completed our renovation through Sweeten and I can I couldn't be happier with the results!!! We had major repairs needed on brickwork, flooring, drywall/painting, and electricity, and Sweeten matched us with a really fabulous GC. He got the job done on time and within budget--both of which were very tight. Here is the short of why I would highly recommend using Sweeten with any renovation project: 1) With Sweeten you are matched with several different types of contractors. Meeting each GC really helped me hone my own understanding of the project and the expectations I had for the job. We were matched with one GC who was more of an interior designer, one GC which was a high end, complete overhaul type contractor, and one GC who was a jack-of-all-trades fix-it. We ended up going with the jack-of-all-trades, but I could definitely see that other people would have pursued different renovations, and it was nice to see the options. 2) All of the GC's are background checked by Sweeten, which was a big relief as they are infiltrating your home for several weeks. 3) Sweeten kept in contact during the renovation, and it was very nice to know that *if* something had gone wrong, there was someone to turn to. Truly, from the renovators end, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain from going through Sweeten. I wholeheartedly recommend it!!! read more

Sorry to say, I wasn't impressed with this business. Having seen Sweeten advertised on television, and with a pending renovation project I thought I would give this startup a chance. I listed my project on the Sweeten website and very quickly received 3 contractor matches, one of which sought to provide contracting services not close to what I was looking for, the other two were not exactly what I had in mind. After that I didn't receive any additional matches. I do not and cannot blame Sweeten for this. What I can hold them accountable for, however, is their lack of responsiveness. I emailed them directly with questions based on a link on their website and never received a response. I did, however, receive an email from Miranda prompting me to respond to one of the contractor matches. When I responded directly to Miranda raising the fact that no one had ever responded to my original email, that response was met with silence. Nothing. To this day, I have never received a response. So, my project has been deleted from Sweeten and I resorted to my own due diligence and have found a firm with great communication that I think will be up to my renovation task. I know that Sweeten is a relatively new small business, however, there is something to be said for customer service which I believe should be the cornerstone of any service-driven organization. read more

I'm giving Sweeten the highest rating available b/c my personal experience with them was extremely positive. Many of my neighbors recommended them. It seems that everyone in my complex who underwent any renovations used them and had nothing but great things to say about them. That's why it was a no brainer when I was ready to renovate. They posted my job and apparently I had unrealistic expectations as to how much a renovation of the magnitude I posted would cost in NYC. A SWEETEN representative called me and said I would have to reconsider either the scope of the project or how much I was willing to spend. After doing some research I posted what I thought was an appropriate budget and I got calls from 3 contractors. They were all professional, and gave me recommendations and their opinions as to how they envisioned the project to progress. All of the estimates were realistic. I went with Bobby of New Image Construction and Design, Inc., whose estimate fell in the middle. He and his team were very professional and honest. There were no major hiccups and I was kept abreast throughout. If something ended up costing more he tried to see if he could save me money elsewhere. I ended up paying close to what I was told it was going to cost and the project ended pretty close to when I was told it was going to finish. Perhaps I was just lucky picking the contractor that I did but the fact is I wouldn't have found him without SWEETEN. I assume that a contractor would make sure he acts accordingly if he wants to continue a relationship with SWEETEN. I received a few calls throughout from SWEETEN asking how the project was unfolding. I'm not sure how they would have responded had I voiced any problems b/c I didn't have any. Renovations can be very overwhelming so it's great to have an organization that can at the very least help you begin the process. I did my due diligence after being contacted by each contractor, reading their reviews and reviewing past projects. I didn't rely solely on SWEETEN's recommendation. I submitted my project and promptly received matches from 3 contractors. The first one kept emailing me and when I would email him with times and dates to meet, he wouldn't respond. The 2nd contractor made an appointment and stopped by. He provided what I thought was a reasonable estimate about 1 week later. The estimate wasn't very thorough in terms of description, however, which made me nervous that there would be costs spiraling out of control. The 3rd contractor stopped by with his "designer" fiance. The "designer" tried to suggest materials that I didn't want or like which I thought was odd. I had no trust in her opinions because she was dressed very inappropriately and didn't carry herself very well. They came back the next day with a crazy estimate that seemed made up because they were trying to keep in line with the Sweeten forced estimate of $27,000...they wanted to charge $14,000 for materials which will end up costing about $3,000. I told them their quote was double of the previous quotes received and he responded with "good luck to you." After this, I responded back to a Sweeten rep and told her everything I just wrote and she never replied. Not a good experience. We found Sweeten online googling NYC contractors and loved our experience with Sweeten. They connected us with a contractor who was excellent and perfectly understood our renovation needs, ideas about design and most importantly stayed mindful of our timing constraints (our move in date was not flexible and the complete apartment renovation needed to be completed before our move). The Sweeten contractor was even able to work with minimal supervision and feedback when our son was born during the renovation project and our free time to interact with him became much more limited. He made sure the project was completed on time. We hit a small bump right after we moved in when a towel heater he had installed was not properly secured to the wall and fell but the Sweeten contractor immediately sent someone to fix it one day later.
