I personally usually like sweeter tasting things more, and the seasonal Maple drink I just happened to stumble on it in my travels and ended up getting that! Bathroom floor has leaves decoration on it. I meant to get a picture of this, but I forgot to, and it was too embarrassing to go back to get the pic later on because I was the only customer in the building at the time and I would've felt too weird asking to use the facilities so soon (unnecessarily) or to ask if I could take a picture of leaves decoration on a floor. Back again! My wife and I are celebrating our birthdays together this weekend and we decided to stop by Sweetgrass for some wine tasting. We both decided on a flight sample of 4 choices from their menus for a low cost of $5 which includes a souvenir wine glass. Our first sample was Blueberry Smash. It ends with a very nice blueberry flavor with a tart blend and is a fortified wine with blueberry brandy (a port aged four years in French oak barrels). Our second choice was Blueberry Sangria and it was delicious with a sweet, tart combination. it is made with wild main blueberry's cranberries in orange juice. Next in our flight choice was the Cranberry Smash and it had a light and airy feel with a fragrance of cranberry. It is a main cranberry wine fortified with cranberry brandy. Our final selection. Cranberry Apple wine which delighted us with both the taste of Local cranberries and apples. My favorite was the Blueberry Smash and my wife enjoyed the Blueberry Sangria and we decided on purchasing a bottle of each. read more

Along with the other local winery (Savage Oakes), as well as a handful of local fromageries: Appleton Creamery and Crooked Face Creamery, Sweetgrass offered up samples of their wines and spirits on Father's Day. Open from May until December you can drop by for a sampling ($2.50 for 6 tastes and the stemless glass is yours). We sampled the "Bleujolais" and the Peach Wine - which would make an excellent granita and then moved on to their port (aka "smash") offerings. The maple smash invoked cozy images of apres-ski sipping by a roaring fire whereas the blueberry smash would be a sweet ending to any summer meal in lieu of blueberry pie. My family, lovers of gin, was most interested in trying out the Back River Gin. Sipped neat it offers a multi-dimensional, highly botanical taste. And it is extremely refreshing when a bit of tonic is added. We ended up picking up a bottle for later. The final sample was reserved for the Three Crow Rum which was quite nice, but not as exciting at the gin. Definitely worth a visit next time you find yourself in Vacationland (or if you can't make it up, pester your local liquor store until they order some of that Back River Gin!). read more

My wife and I went to Sweetgrass Farm and it was fantastic! The tasting was $2.50 per person and you got to sample 5 selections and keep a cute glass. Who can beat that? The selections between wine and spirits were outstanding. While we were there, the owner was conducting the samplings and he was great. The experience from top to bottom was fantastic! We look forward to the day they add whiskey to their mix. My only suggestion add a few more signs to help find the place. GO- you will be glad you did. read more

Beautiful winery, inside and out! The Tasting is very reasonably priced and they have so many items to choose from. There is a deck and lawn with seating, in a gorgeous setting and a beautiful view. We brought some snacks, but they also sell local cheeses that were delicious. We took guests there and definitely plan to do so again. Great place to relax and try something new. (I don't recommend the nature walk, though. The grass wasn't mowed short enough, there were wet marshy spots that we couldn't cross, and SO MANY ticks!) read more

Drive the extra miles, but get thee to this hidden gem! We were among the last visitors of the 2014 season. I can tell you that the Bodine's were wonderful hosts, letting us wander the winery, look over the distillery, and for a modest fee, sample five of their wines or liquors. Now, after sharing several rounds around our fireplace as winter sets in, I repeat: get thee to Sweetgrass and leave with at least a bottle of their Three Crows Rum and Backriver Gin. Both these spirits are unique and worth keeping on the top shelf of your bar. Three Crows Rum was true to the colonial heritage of rum distilling; fermented and distilled 'over the Maine winter'. It has hints of smooth caramel and a great nose, perhaps due to a brief aging in bourbon barrels. This is not your silver rum found in those coconut drinks, nor would you want to drink Three Crows that way... Backriver Gin also honors local production by using Maine botanicals, including blueberries(!). Taking pure spirits from a traditional pot still, the Bodines infuse botanicals in the old Dutch genever fashion. Even though there are blueberries in the infusion, they seem to add only the memories of a Maine summer and remain restrained to the juniper and spices. We cannot wait for the winery to reopen in May. read more

This is nice stop on the wine trail of maine. It's a lovely littlt farm with their own distillery inside. They make not only wine, but their own spirits, including gin and rum. It's $2.50 for 5 sample of your choice. The blueberry boujoulas was wonderful, fruity with a slightly dry finish. I loved all three of the smashes, cranberry, blueberry and rhubarb. They have lots of things to looks at including, all the ingredients for different types of gin, including juniper and berries. They even have an old truck inside. There are lots of sheep to awwww over in the yard. It was sad not to be able to try them all, but reason to take another trip. read more

Sweetgrass was one of the places we stopped during out trip to Maine and loved this place and the wine! I always hunting for sweet wine (I'm German) and they had the most awesome Peach Wine & Blueberry Smash... had to take several bottles of each home. They also had lots of other wines which were wonderful. The hostess there friendly but a little overwhelmed with many "visitors" and could have used some help. They charged you a nominal fee (under $3 for 4 tastings) and you get to keep your wine glass with their logo on it which i thought was cool. Definitely recommend this place! Just found out that their shipper only ships to certain states so don't assume you can order more online.. you may have to buy what you want! ASK if they ship to your state! read more

Having moved to Maine late last year, we are still excited as we explore the surrounding communities for small businesses; entrepreneurs who love what they are making and enjoy sharing them with the public. Sweetgrass is no exception. Their product line is intriguing and takes advantage of the flora and fauna of Maine. They've managed to put Maine in a bottle that you can share with others. Their offer to provide you with four samples for a paltry $5 is a great way to introduce themselves to your palate. I found all of the drinks we sampled to be interesting even if I didn't particularly care for cider libations; theirs was unique in a few different ways. Their liquors were all amazing in both quality and variety. The outstanding examples we tried (and bought) were the Gin, the Maple liquor, the rum and the blueberry sangria. None of them were overdone with too much of anything but rather a solid hint of the flavor being offered. The Maple Smash contains the perfect amount of Maple essence. The Blueberry Sangria was really excellent and would be WONDERFUL on warm blueberry pie or home-made vanilla ice cream or simply served on ice on a warm spring day. The rum is better than a lot of rums I've tried including Pirate. It's "rummy" with just the right amount of sweetness but reminds you that it's an adult drink. It would be wonderful as a hot drink. I've saved the Gin for last. I'll admit I'm a Bombay Sapphire devotee when it comes to traditional martinis. I tried my sample three times and then even asked for a second taste. Then I had them make me a martini using their own vermouth. (Again only $5.00!) I wanted to find the backbone of this gin which has received such wild world-wide accolades. The martini did it. It was room temp, too. What a sophisticated balance unlike other small batch gins that tend to be medicinal. I can't wait to try one at home and share it with my brothers, all of whom are Gin devotees. So, my attitude heading home was a bit more mellow than when we arrived. My wife drove home, don't worry. Combine a visit here with a stop at Cellar Door for a complete experience. The drive here into non-coastal Maine is recommended as a welcome break from Route 1. We decided to do the tasting that included the glass, I believe it was $5 for five tastes. My favorite items were the Cranberry smash, a sort of liqueur about the strength of port, the rum and gin. The spirits were super, so that's what we bought. I did not find the wines to be memorable, but the smash, the spirits, and the ambience are well worth the trip. read more

This was our second visit to Sweetgrass. We enjoyed it four years ago and wanted to see what they were up to these days. We weren't disappointed. They charge you a small fee to sample, but you get to keep the glass. I'm not a fan of very sweet wines, so I passed on sampling those, but my husband enjoyed them an bought a few bottles. I'm not a gin or brandy girl, but walked out of there with a bottle of each! I really enjoyed the maple brandy. I do recommend not going there on an empty stomach after going to another winery.
