My 8 yr old has been suffering with frontal headaches for almost a year. We've been in and out of the ER every month or so and all they do is give her strong pain killers that are not effective. The first thoughts that goes through most people's minds when they hear acupuncture are images of death by a thousand needles, lying down on a bed of nails, or in some light-hearted moment, in the children's movie Kung-Fu Panda when Po had his face adorned with needles administered by Mantis. All jokes aside, acupuncture is something I feel that you just have to try it and see for yourself. The white collar office workers in us, the hard working blue collared work force in us, and the children raising parents in us, all would sometimes arrive at a point where we might feel that we aren't as young as we used to be, in that our bodies don't seem to heal and recover as well as when we were in our 20s. A few weeks ago prior to this review, I was doing some yard work while I was carrying a few bags of volcanic rocks from the garden store to my car, drove home, and prepared to bring the rocks into my yard. Haven't done this much heavy lifting since having our toddler and I didn't feel anything wrong. Two days later, I felt soreness, and it was sharp shooing pain down my back, and I had originally thought it was just some soreness and will go away in a few days, it did not and have gotten worse to the point where it hurts to get up from my chair, getting in and out of my car, and even to take a deep breath. I don't think I have ever experienced this kind of pain before. At first I thought it was shingles, which I've had before and it was a similar sharp pain in my back area along my spine, but I didn't have any symptoms of those. So I called up Dr. Chen's practice, who I have seen before right before spring break and talked with him, who was able to see me as the last patient before his family goes on spring break. One thing I've come to enjoy over the years is a spa type environment. Dr. Chen's office has no strong scented essence oils lit, nor does it have saunas or steam rooms (this is not a massage parlor). All it has, is quiet, dark, private rooms, the nice, continuous soothing music that've grown to enjoy, and Dr. Chen's soft, gentle, but reassuring voice that you will feel better when your session is finished than before you walked into his door. Back to this most recent session, from brief moments of conversation, and talking to me about my pain, he has determined that I have back spasms, and treatable while in the early stages, but if left untreated, could develop into chronic herniated disc (ouch, I thought I would only hear about this in professional athletes). So with me lying face down, the session involved him applying pressure to my pained area (they were so painful, I knew he's got the right area, I just wish I have somewhere to grab onto so I can endure the pain better!), then comes the cupping (Yes, the "pepperoni" marks you saw Michael Phelps had during the 2016 Rio Olympics is the result of that), and then the needles in different pressure points along my head, face, hand and legs. The needles, in case you are wondering, aren't the same type of needles that you get shots with and do not go into your blood vessels. You might feel a little tingling sensation as it is applied, but that's it. Then, Dr. Chen will usually put a heated lamp over the area that needs work and asks you to take a brief nap (in the middle of the day? Heck yeah!) and put a bell in your hand so in case you need him, he'll come right back for you. Some words of advice, don't think about you have needles in you, the more you think about it, the more you are going to feel the needles, just relax and let the background music draw you in a deep relaxed and soothing rest. Don't reach for your phone, you can check whatever it is you need to later. Upon the conclusion, Dr. Chen told me that I may still have some pain tonight, and that I should go home that day and take a hot bath (the hotter the water the better) and do it for 3 straight nights. I've never appreciated a hot bath more than I did after those 3 days. If you feel nothing you do seem to be ridding you of the pain in your back and constant massage sessions just don't seem to work. Perhaps give acupuncture a try, you just might think of needles in a different light. read more

I was skeptical when a family friend made me an appointment with Charles. I had had many acupressure massages by the blind masseuses in Shanghai (No, not that kind) but was unsure if I wanted to be stuck with sharp sterile objects. He introduced himself to me promptly at my appointment time and walked me into a treatment room. He asked me health questions and any ailments I had. He then asked for permission to examine me. He examined both my front and back. He then began to press firmly on certain parts of my back that I knew was the good sorts of pain. He spent ten minutes and then asked for permission to place needles on me. I obliged and he placed several needles on my legs, stomach area, face, arms, and head. It was an unusual sensation, but tolerable. He then asked me if any insertion sites were sore and then left a bell in my hand just in case. He left and returned twenty-five minutes later. He removed the needles and made some life style recommendations in terms of diet and posture. I walked out with that high you get after a proper massage, but with more information and structure. I'm a believer. P.S. Charle's voice itself is soothing enough to calm a screeching baby. read more

Dr. Chen is AMAZING. I emailed him last minute for my first visit with him because I have to go on a business trip and the Western medicine didn't work. He responded quickly and was kind enough willing to see me before their regular hours (I worked night shift and go straight to him after work). Only after 2 treatments, my symptoms had improved so much that I was able to go my business trip without issues. I highly recommend this place for your health need. read more

It'a amazing to see and feel how quickly Dr. Chen can reap results. Today I was suffering from extremely painful menstrual cramping. I was sweating, having chills, and feeling nauseous. I was on my wits end when I was able to get a treatment with Dr. Chen. My pain was at least a 7 or 8 out of 10 on the pain scale. By the time all the needles where inserted my pain level went down to a 3 immediately. After the treatment was over I got up off the treatment table with 0 pain. Dr. Chen is very understanding and treats his patients with care and professionalism. Amazing cupping and tui na! (and acupuncture of course). Dr Chen is one of the most generous and caring people I've ever met. His treatments are strong and effective, and he really takes the time to try to understand you as a patient. I saw him after I came back from Southeast Asia with a lingering tropical disease, and he quickly got my condition under control and headed towards full recovery. Dr. Chen is the best. He treated me in the American College of Acupuncture and I have not been able to follow him to his practice because I live and work very far away from Sugarland. But other than that I am very thankful how he treated me for deep grief after my husband died. I do highly recommend him. Dr. Chen has truly earned the title of "Doctor". Not only does he provide compassionate care, he also does a great job of educating his patients and gives them the tools they need to remain healthy. I visited Sweetwater Acupuncture last Fall because I repeatedly kept catching colds and felt extremely exhausted and drained. Upon entering the clinic I was greeted kindly by the front desk staff and was welcomed by the peaceful yet uplifting ambiance of the clinic. I didn't have to wait long before Dr. Chen took me back to the treatment room. The room was bright, clean, and well ventilated. He inquired about my condition and listened carefully and compassionately. Once the treatment began he made every effort to make sure I was comfortable and covered me with sheets to make sure I was warm enough. After the first few needles went in my breath finally eased and my nervous system relaxed. I am very grateful that I was able to lie flat and take deep breaths again! After several nights of not sleeping I finally drifted off to deep and restful sleep and when I woke up I felt like I had more energy and my chest felt less congested. After helping me up he sat with me and told me what I could do to help my condition when I feel the onset of a cold - now a heating pad is my best friend! My treatment was fantastic. Dr. Chen is very knowledgeable and is excellent at asking questions to be able to get to the best treatment for you. Chinese medicine and acupuncture is all about the person with an ailment not just the ailment. Dr. Chen takes the time to not only figure out the best treatment for you but also will educate you in how you can do things that will accelerate your healing. He makes it easy to be in a partnership of health and healing due to his instruction/education. A treatment consists of what he can do in the actual room with the acupuncture and the other half is about you. What do you do to stay in health? With Dr.Chen he respectfully educates you and his " bedside manner" is fantastic. As for the healing because he figures out what is wrong by asking good questions and being an astute observer the treatment is spot on. It's interesting that even though you have a headache it's your legs and feet that need adjustment! Acupuncture can be a little bit uneasy for some because of the needles, but Dr. Chen makes you feel comfortable in the fact that he will only use as many as needed for the most effective treatment.
