The service was adequate... they brought us the food and drinks ordered. The pizzas are really good and hand made... we spoke with the woman who throws each pie dough by hand. Both pizzas over two nights were delicious. My salad was pretty good too since it was nice leafy greens lettuce (not iceberg). There are a couple of tvs showing the main sports of the day... in our case we watched a bit of FIFA football (soccer). The homemade pickles were mild and still crisp, and even my pickle hater friends enjoyed theirs. To end everything off, we ordered a whole huckleberry-peach pie. They don't sell whole pies typically so they offered us one of their pie baking tins if we were to bring it back. Sadly, we won't be in town past the morning, so we had to decline, but they boxed up our pie in pieces and we left on our merry way. I never claimed that race dictated how I was treated. I stated a simple fact about my experience: I was the only person of color in the restaurant. A factual observation is not an accusation. What is particularly interesting is that your response is the one that repeatedly introduces the subject of racism, ethnic diversity, and the racial makeup of your ownership and management. I never questioned the ethnicity of your owners, managers, or employees, nor did I suggest that their backgrounds somehow determined their behaviour. You don't need to defend yourself against an allegation I never made. I can acknowledge that the comment about my appearance was inappropriate, acknowledge that your staff have been reprimanded and received additional training, and still describe exactly how the situation looked and felt from my perspective. Those things are not contradictory. And with respect, whether the employees are "good kids" isn't really the point. Good people can make poor decisions, and accountability means recognizing the behaviour without needing to make excuses for the people involved. From what you've described, that's exactly what you have done--and I respect that. What I don't appreciate is having my words reinterpreted into something more inflammatory than what I actually said, and then being given an explanation for an accusation I never made. I described my experience. You supplied the accusation. I'm perfectly comfortable standing behind what I wrote, because I chose my words carefully. If me stating a factual observation made you uncomfortable, that doesn't make the observation unfair, discriminatory, or inappropriate. I appreciate your apology. I simply expect the same level of fairness in how my words and experience are represented. Sam, one last clarification regarding the shots. I have no issue acknowledging that our server was kind enough to get them for us, and I respect her gesture. But I would hardly consider something coming out of an employee's own pocket something the establishment should be presenting as evidence of its own generosity. If anything, that distinction makes the gesture more meaningful because it came from her personally--not from the business. We didn't ask for the shots, request them, or expect them. They were simply placed on the table. We also declined having the bill covered. So I would leave that particular detail alone. Attempting to use an unsolicited gesture from your server as a favourable footnote to the incident doesn't improve the story--it only highlights who actually showed generosity and professionalism that evening.
