Every time i go to swissbakers they do something weird. last time, i ordered a turkey sandwich with pesto and lettuce and tomato. they gave me the sandwich, but forgot to put the turkey inside.... gave them a second shot and went back today for a turkey sandwich and first they gave my sandwich to someone else on a plate (i ordered mine to go). they realized that they gave the girl the wrong sandwich and ran back to her and took it from her then tried to hand it to me, but then quickly took it back from me and wrapped it to go. sandwich may have been touched by an unsanitary stranger, but whatever i'm hungry. take it to work, open up the sandwich and i am greeted by a huge hair in my turkey on top of very wilted brown lettuce :( i took out the hair and lettuce and ate it anyway. super hungry and can't deal right now - don't judge. also, they sliced the bread really weird leaving 3 inches of my roll on top and only about 1 millimeter thick of bread on the bottom? how do you even do that? also agree with the other posters that this place just has a weird vibe. i have no idea why but i am not at ease when i am in there. and the customer service is very eager and aggressive yet inconsistent and sometimes lacks knowledge. although this is one of the few places next to my work to eat, i will not be going back ever. read more

This place is weird, expensive, and slow. Listen, I'm down with friendly, but the staff takes it to downright creepy levels. The window says "Guest Hugging Hours..." Please don't touch me, Swissbaker. When you walk in, every employee will give a big scary smile and a welcome, so you must apply your frosty New England veneer in earnest. Four people will try to take your order at the same time instead of completing the order of the person waiting in front of you. After ordering, while you are waiting, two or three other people will also attempt to take your order. And then they'll be sorry about something. Don't order a sandwich here; I've had no luck. The pastry/bakery items are great, but the coffee is not (do not order fancy coffee items; my Americano took forever and was not worth the time or the price). My advice is: wear sunglasses. Pick delicious items from the display case but do NOT ask them to toast/warm the item(s). Run away before someone tries to hug you. read more

I want to come back. I wanted to come back before I left! On this corner your choices for morning coffee are Dunkin's, 7-11 or this place. This place wins all forever and ever. So, after hearing my boyfriend exclaim about how awesome they are and that they already knew him by sight, I knew I wanted to go and waited for the morning when we would stop. I had an iced chai-- literally a tea bag in a cup of ice water that was too tasty for being what it was-- and an animal butter roll. It was a frog, and it was so cute. And delicious, because after instagramming, I ate the heck out of it. The end. I was so excited to try this place, but left pretty disappointed. My siblings and I came at around 3:30PM on a weekday. There wasn't a great variety of breads to choose from. As I was thinking about trying the chocolate weggli, I noticed some gnats lingering around one of then. I mentioned it out loud to my brother so that the worker could hear me. This place has gone downhill lately. I'm not sure why but it's sad and unfortunate. Today four of us came per usual for lunch to this place. The employees forgot to include cheese in my friend's sandwich, so upon his complaint just gave him a slice of cheese (unmelted). They forgot a tomatoes for my sandwich, and for another friend they gave her a small when she asked for a large (they told her she ordered a small, she has been coming here for 3 years ordering large sandwiches, I think she would know what she ordered). My fourth order asked for dijon on the side and received mayo on the sandwich. When they mess up four orders in a row, maybe some compensation is in order, instead of telling each of us that we actually didn't order what we thought that we did? And now they started charging for extra cucumbers, tomatoes, etc? By trying to make an extra 25 cents here and there you end up with frustrated customers who don't return. Luckily they still give out tap water (although in such tiny cups). Not sue if this is under new management, but here is a free tip: When your employees are making a lot of mistakes, they should apologize and compensate the hungry customer somehow, not offer them individual pieces of tomatoes and cheese & ask them to build their own sandwich. For a while I thought Swissbakers was a drug front, since there's hardly any pedestrian traffic in this dodgy slice of Allston. Now I know the truth. Any drugs coming through here obviously get baked into their deliciously addictive berliners. For the uninitiated, berliners are German-engineered donuts that taste and look better than any donut you've ever had. At Swissbakers they come with chocolate or raspberry filling. There's no going wrong, and I encourage you to order both. You can also manage to get a filling deli sandwich for $4. Just order a small sandwich on a pajazzo (a hearty baguette-type bread) and load it up with your choice of meat, cheese, and veggies. The sandwich won't knock your socks off but it's a great cheap lunch option. read more

I'm still a big fan of Swissbakers but my enthusiasm has dampened a little since my first review. While everything I originally wrote remains true (particularly the quality of the snacks) I think it needs to address two operational issues: 1. The ordering and checkout process is an operational nightmare. One thing is certain: wherever you start the process of ordering won't be where you finish. There are four or five cash registers which notionally can handle any order but aren't usually in operation. So the counter is typically mobbed with confused people being shuffled from one spot to another. 2. There are too many employees. We're talking five people up-front when there are just as many patrons. In addition to being a mystifying business decision, it also means that they're always chit-chatting. I'm all for employees enjoying themselves, but it can be distracting and a little unprofessional. read more

I know they're not the same but all of this strangely reminded me of Ikea and their food. I tried Berliner and the breakfast quiche - quiche was extremely salty and well, just a quiche. The Berliner is tasty as expected. Their pastry selection is vasty and it all looks good though perhaps a little mass produced (Ikea style). They do have a great variety of breads that if it were any closer, I'd come in the mornings. I'd been hearing a lot of people talk about hitting the stairs over at Harvard Stadium for a killer workout, so I've started doing it about once a week. Each time I go I park up on Western Ave and each time I park on Western Ave I look over at Swissbaekers and think to myself: 'hmmm...' The thing is, doing the steps is even harder than it sounds (and I'm nowhere close to doing all the sections yet), so I feel consistently horrible and disgusting by the time I'm done. For those of you who remember the 80s, maybe you'll remember a commercial for (I think) Dannon yogurt in which a woman gets back to her car after a long, hard run and immediately starts jamming yogurt. I love yogurt and I love exercise, but yogurt immediately after a hard run is gross. Today I made a point of bringing a few bucks with me so I could check Swissbaekers out. Lightheaded, I staggered in. There's talk on their website about hugs, which made me a little nervous because I was sweaty and couldn't have smelled good. No hugs, but warm (if obviously company-ordered) greetings and smiles. It's spotless and airy with lots of windows, so I plan to go back some time and sit a while... maybe when I get my sometimes stadium buddy to come back with me. They only have light roasted coffee, but it's pretty good. I got a chocolate and a raspberry berliner, which I brought home and split with my wife. Wow. When I walked in the door I was a bit taken aback by the odd layout and confusing multiple cash registers. However, about 30 seconds later the odd space utilization became endearing and the wonderful owner explained the operation to us. There's a bread-bakery side and a pastry-side, each with it's own register, but you can order everything from either place. Swissbakers is weird in that it's slick and well-planned enough to be part of a small bakery chain, yet is a standalone shop. And I mean this in the best way possible. The owners put a lot of time and energy into the aesthetic of the place, the custom display, counter space, and Swiss-decorations. They have their own bags, napkins, etc. It's cute, what Starbucks might be if it weren't soulless. It isn't a restaurant by any means but a pretty solid coffee shop with a limited sandwich menu. The baked goods are delicious. There's a good [I guess healthy] 'energy roll' made with cranberries, pecans, and oats. They've got pretzel bread/rolls, Berliner donuts, macarons, puff pastries, these monster-roll things [that's what they call them, probably for the chocolate chip eyes]. They also sell muesli at the register. Stuff isn't cheap, especially the sandwiches, but is commensurate with Peet's Coffee or Starbucks prices. I don't think the Saturday/Sunday all-you-can eat buffet brunch is worth it unless a) you eat a lot, b) you aren't vegetarian/vegan [you've got your yogurt and granola and sad cut fruit but that's pretty much it for $10.99], and c) really like bacon, eggs, sausages, or pastries/sweet breakfast items. Their eggs are cooked in these little patty shapes, taste like a milk/egg mixture rather than just straight up egg [almost like an Eggbeater] and can be a little salty. The almond croissant is excellent as well. This is a local hangout for me, although it does have a very open and "hanger-like" feel but the staff are friendly the food is good and fresh and it's definitely authentic. If you want a big breakfast get their buffet plate where they serve a very complete and wide variety of delicious treats. This changes regularly but you can expect egg of some sort, potatoes or hash browns, fruit, bread, spreads, and something sweet ... Super helpful when you are ignorant of some of the baked goods. They gave me a few samples on things I'd never heard of. And their hours are posted as "Hugging Hours" Highlight? I love Pretzel anything...they have pretzel rolls (delicious) and pretzel bread... The brunch is delicious and cheap and unlimited...muesli, eggs, bacon, potatoes, cheese and bread...what's not to love. I was always curious about the place since anything Swiss is usually good quality. Recently, I stopped by on a weekday and upon entering a smiling, welcoming employee asked if I had been here before. She explained the setup, which was a nice, i.e., create-your-own sandwich, lunch menus/lighter meals to the left and to-go pastries/tarts to the right, divided separate display windows, i.e, sweet vs. savory. Everything looked appealing and the establishment was very clean. I went for a seeded pajazzo sandwich with lox, mustard and some veggies. A second employee made the sandwich but used regular pajazzo which I pointed out, whereupon a third employee remade it (he transferred the toppings to the requested seeded bread). There is an outdoor seating even though the view isn't the cosiest, a highway and industrial landscape The sandwich was good, the excellent quality of the bread makes mayo/oil/butter unnecessary. I came here for a weekday lunch and discovered the lunch plate. It's a bundle of goodness! You get the soup of the week (leak onion soup in this case), a side salad, and a slice of quiche (pick one out of five options). If you thrive on options and bundled deals, then try this lunch special. I also ordered the museli a second time to make sure my first experience wasn't an anomaly. WOW! This place looked so appealing from the outside and sure was on the inside, too! I had no idea what I was doing and literally each employee behind the tables asked if I needed help and let me know what I could order. I got a vegetarian sandwich on some interesting type of bread. (can't remember the name, it was swiss!) but it was yummy and healthy! I wish they had more vegetarian dishes though :/ The manager or maybe he was the owner even came over and asked how the sandwich was! Everyone was happy and it was a delightful experience. The bread wasn't as delicious as I was expecting. Apparently the bread is all freshly made, but it didn't really taste like it... Fillings were okay. I'd compare this place to a Subway. I used to love Swissbakers and even drive to their location up North when there was no Cambridge/Allston shop. And the quality of the food doesn't disappoint. I have to say though that the quality of service in Cambridge has been declining fast and that's why I'm giving two stars here. In the last few weeks, whenever I order I get the wrong things or they simply miss parts. This has been happening at various visits with different staff members. Usually that's not an issue if you mistake one for the other but recently I noticed that I only got e.g. 4 Brezeln when ordering and paying for 5. Given their prices this is more than just annoying. Another thing that I noticed is that they start mixing sweet and salty food and are stuffing it all in the same bag. So in short same good quality of food as always. But they certainly lack in service quality and people training. I won't be back. read more

I ordered bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and cup of cappuccino, and for dessert my friends and I shared few donuts with raspberry jam. The food was pretty good. This is definitely one of my favorite bakeries in Boston. I've tried several of their pastries, including the ham and cheese, chocolate, and spinach croissants (which are all delicious) as well as the choco weggli and berliner; there isn't anything I've tried that I wouldn't recommend. Their kagi bars are small but delicious and their muesli is a must-try; I've ordered it every time I've visited. In some ways it's similar to a fruit parfait, but in my opinion is slightly creamier and has much more flavor and better textures - just get it now and thank me later. read more
