Again, scheduling them to come back out was an issue. Determined needed a new major part. Was without AC for over a week. Meantime weather in the upper 90s. Scheduling again was a major issue for the delay. I would have given 1 star but the people who came to install equipment were actually terrific and apologetic.

The technician was pleasant and explained to me the issue. (The one star isn't for him). He informed me that the part needed to be ordered. Okay, no problem. Their customer service by far needs some serious attention. I received a call on January 10th (less than 24 hour notice) telling me to be at my home at a certain time. I informed them that it was short notice and the earliest I could do was 3. So I was told my time would be between 3-7pm. Okay no problem. On the next day, January 11th, I take off early, book it across town to make sure I'm here by 3pm. The time passes by. I called, and no answer (it's difficult to get in touch with these people). By 6:44, I'm sending an email. So there you have it, NO CALL, NO SHOW. January 12th at 10:43am, I get this response, "I apologize for not calling yesterday but there was a problem with the supply house. The part they provided my tech will not work, and we had to order the correct replacement part. It should be available on Friday - and pending delivery we can install on Saturday. We will call on Friday to confirm that the part has arrived, and schedule a time for installation on Saturday." Well, Friday comes, no call or an email at all. Now mind you, they first came out on the 2nd. January 16th, I send them an email at 5:35am asking for an update since NO ONE CALLED ON FRIDAY. No response to my email. I had someone call me the following day and once again, no 24 hour notice telling me to be at my house at an early time. I told them no since when I left work early, no one called or showed up and again, no one called on Friday. So she tells me they will give me a call back. Fast forward to today, the 19th and I get a call at close to 4pm telling me to be home tomorrow from 2-6. Again, no 24 hour notice. I told her I can't take off again early and I have accommodated them, they need to accommodate me since I was already stood up and then on a second occasion wasn't contacted as I was told I would be. I told her the earliest I could do is 3pm. Of course, I couldn't fit in that schedule at all. But considering how they have already inconvenienced me, you would think they would accommodate my request. So she informs me that they will call me on Friday to schedule a time for Saturday. What ever happened to giving a person a 48 hour notice? I don't get it. I called my home warranty company to request another technician because this is by far poor customer service. Then when I came on here and saw the reviews, I was even more disappointed. And I told them to stop using them, the reviews are TERRIBLE.

As soon as we realized there was a water leak from the HVAC at my MILs place we turned the AC off and called the company that had been taking care of her HVAC until she recently passed away. The person I spoke with was very pleasant and worked quickly to get us an appt for the next day. I let her know we were driving 2.5 hours from Austin to be there when they came out. She scheduled it for between 12-4. The day of the appt a little after 12 another rep (also very nice) called to let us know the technicians were running a little late, apologized, and informed us it would probably be slightly later then 12-4. She said somewhere between 4-6 but should be on the earlier side of that. She asked if that was ok. I let her know we had to get the AC fixed ASAP, we drove 2.5 hours for the appt, and it was very hot but we would wait and understood the slight delay. Around 620pm we still had not heard from anyone so I called to find out what was going on. It took me a few minutes to realize the person I thought I was speaking to was an AI bot just repeating back to me my complaints and then the bot told me our appointment had been moved to 8-10 PM. That is a significant difference from the original 12-4 window and no one even called us to notify us! We had been sitting in triple digit heat with our 6 year old all day. I was furious and when I finally made it through to a real person I told her I wanted to cancel the appointment and that we were going to find someone who valued our time and business as it was obvious they did not. Our family left around 7. A little after 8 the tech calls to say he is at our place to take a look. He was nice and I felt bad he drove all that way. I told him we were not paying for any services (there was apparently no service fee for it) but he could enter the house to take a look. He called back about 30 min later and stated that it was an issue in the main plumbing that caused everything to overflow because the HVAC had no where to drain. I told him we would have a plumber come out to take a look. The plumber came out the next day and stated there were no clogs or issues with the main plumbing but the AC line was clogged and needed to be blown out. I can't really say who was right or wrong but once they cleared the HVAC line and tested with soapy water there was no evidence of a ln active leak. I used this company because my MIL used them for her new unit and was paying for the monthly protection membership (which honestly looks like a rip off) before she passed away. Looking through her paperwork she had multiple issues with her AC unit ever since she purchased it from them. Multiple times issues with it leaking. We were able to call another company and get assistance almost immediately. I would not recommend using this company at all!

This review, written in June of 2024, is for work done over a year ago. The reason for the delay…read moreis that I only recently had time to fix the multiple mistakes this company made. When I went into the attic to correct a poorly installed booster fan (details below), I also discovered dangerous wiring in violation of electrical codes. See those wire connections near the duct? By code, those are supposed to be inside a junction box that is secured to house framing. But the way this was done is a FIRE and ELECTROCUTION hazard, should someone bump up against it or disturb the connection. That is what prompted me to write this review. Earlier problems: The way this all started was the house I purchased had poor air circulation to one corner of the house, as identified during the home inspection. Prior to closing, the owner had Affordable American (AA) install a booster fan. Unfortunately, they installed it in the wrong location. Instead of installing it upstream of a Y-junction, they installed it in one of the branch circuits of the Y. The problem with that is instead of boosting the air coming from the evaporator fan, it sucks air out of the other side of the Y branch. In effect, creating an endless loop of air that never gets cooled (or heated). When I notified AA of their mistake, they inspected it and quoted their full price for such work, saying it was over a year and why did I wait so long. I don't know why that should matter since it was still a faulty installation on their part. After much haggling, they finally agreed to do it for half the original quote. I then tried to schedule the work, but after many phone calls over a period of weeks, I could never get them to come out. It is clear to me that they had no intention of standing behind their work. In the end, I'm glad they didn't because I never would have seen the shoddy workmanship of the wiring mentioned earlier. I'm glad others seem to have had good experiences with Affordable American, but based on my experience, I would at least have someone knowledgeable check their work for code violations and safety issues. And don't pay them without an independent inspection as they do not stand behind their work.

The downstairs unit worked properly from day one, but the upstairs unit never functioned correctly. The company also failed to obtain the required permit for the installation, which can be verified through the City of Bellaire permitting website. Since installation, the upstairs unit failed to properly cool the home, could not maintain the thermostat set temperature, and leaked water into my attic. The owners, Justin Turner and Jared Hatfield, sent technicians to my home more than 30 times attempting repairs, but the issues were never resolved. By September 2025, after months of ongoing problems, I informed Jared Hatfield that I no longer trusted Douglas Mechanical and requested they remove the defective system and refund my money. Although their website advertises a one-year installation guarantee, they refused to honor it. Douglas Mechanical also sold me a 10-year labor warranty, but when I hired another HVAC company, I learned Douglas Mechanical had never properly paid for or secured that warranty. I hired Northwind AC to inspect the system. Their service manager stated it was one of the worst HVAC installs he had seen. They discovered the upstairs system did not have sufficient supply airflow due to improperly installed ductwork, which Douglas Mechanical had charged me extra to install. After spending additional money with Northwind AC to repair the ductwork and correct the installation issues, both systems now work properly. I have filed a complaint with TDLR and the better business bureau.
