I am filing a complaint against Douglas Mechanical regarding the installation of two Trane XV20i HVAC systems in my home in May 2025. The downstairs unit worked properly from day one, but the upstairs unit never functioned correctly. The company also failed to obtain the required permit for the installation, which can be verified through the City of Bellaire permitting website. Since installation, the upstairs unit failed to properly cool the home, could not maintain the thermostat set temperature, and leaked water into my attic. The owners, Justin Turner and Jared Hatfield, sent technicians to my home more than 30 times attempting repairs, but the issues were never resolved. By September 2025, after months of ongoing problems, I informed Jared Hatfield that I no longer trusted Douglas Mechanical and requested they remove the defective system and refund my money. Although their website advertises a one-year installation guarantee, they refused to honor it. Douglas Mechanical also sold me a 10-year labor warranty, but when I hired another HVAC company, I learned Douglas Mechanical had never properly paid for or secured that warranty. I hired Northwind AC to inspect the system. Their service manager stated it was one of the worst HVAC installs he had seen. They discovered the upstairs system did not have sufficient supply airflow due to improperly installed ductwork, which Douglas Mechanical had charged me extra to install. After spending additional money with Northwind AC to repair the ductwork and correct the installation issues, both systems now work properly. I have filed a complaint with TDLR and the better business bureau. read more

How do you mess up a Trane installation? Company was hired to install a new system in my home. Complete removal and installation of Trane HVAC system. Spent thousands of dollars with them and after a week of work, they cannot get the system to work. Not only that, no communication on what they are going to do to fix the system. Originally used them as part of our Home Warranty but we also decided to buy their maintenance package on their recommendation. Eric Harper came out for A/C Maintenance a few months ago and originally stated everything was fine despite me stating it was not cooling properly in different rooms. He explained that's how the air ducts were built. Obviously felt like a curious explanation since I didn't have cooling issues prior. He took a second look and stated 1 air damper motor was not working properly and recommended it'd be replaced for ~$600. Air Damper motors cost nowhere this much, and I get labor costs, that's fine we went w/ them to get it replaced. Eric came back , replaced it in ~10 minutes, didn't say much of anything and left. No big deal, things appear to be working again. Two months later our AC is not heating and cooling properly again. Decided to go w/ our original builder's AC Company since our warranty and maintenance package w/ Douglas had expired. Original builder told me the motor's wiring was not done properly, and it appears 2 other damper motors are not working. I doubt the other 2 coincidentally stopped working as soon as Douglas left. Douglas had also replaced our coils a few years back and was working fine, but the original builder told me they just left open pipes lying in our attic. He said he gets why they did it to replace the coils, but they should still replace it back. Appears like shoddy, lazy work all around, would definitely not go back to them for AC repairs. read more

I'm a long standing customer. Douglas installed my AC, 8 yrs ago and when the evaporator coil went out in August, they replaced it under warranty. This past weekend we had a hard freeze in Houston. My 19 yr old furnace died. Within three hours of my accepting their quote on a new Trane furnace, it was installed and running. I've never had a problem with their customer service or equipment. This is the best A/C company in the greater Houston area!!! They are very responsive, extremely knowledgeable and their technicians are very skilled and highly professional. My A/C stopped working, so we started looking around for a reputable company for the repair. We discovered Douglas Mechanical on Google (they have exceptional reviews there...). Reached out to them and they had a tech on site the same day, and it was on a Sunday!!! He was able to diagnose the issue, and provided several options, from just the most basic repair, to the benefits of replacing additional worn components. Given the age of the system, we opted to replace the entire unit. Also got a fantastic price as well! Furthermore, they offer an excellent warranty on both parts and labor. After closing the deal, they had an installer crew here the very next day. The team installed the entire system, and did a great job. We invested over $10,000 in a unit, spent thousands more repairing water damage in our game room due to a tied-down damper AFFIXED by technician Eric Harper, and now we're dealing with a frozen unit again. Eric Harper was just here on 3/13/2025 and confirmed that this brand-new unit was in *good* condition--yet it's frozen once more. Douglas Mechanical came out to check my air conditioning as part of my home warranty. They made so many mistakes in their diagnosis of my A/C systems. They did not communicate properly and had to switch their diagnosis at least twice. They sent a sales person that tried to pressure me into buying a unit for $4k less than I could have bought elsewhere. And it turned out to be the wrong equipment. Their technician had to correct their sales person who was trying to charge me $12k to fix issues that did not even exist. Lastly, I was promised a "guarantee" from own of the owners that they would beat any quote I could receive from somewhere else on the units that did need replacing. But they could not even get within $2k of another quote on a Trane unit I ended up purchasing from another company. I don't know what the "guarantee" entailed but they didn't give me anything for my troubles. They just wasted my time. I even reached out to their customer service to politely discuss my issues and they did not return my communication. Once I went with another company, they would not talk to me. They ghosted me completely. This was after they bombarded me and pressured me with emails and calls trying to sell me overpriced equipment in the days previous. I was nothing but polite to them. Beware, called them to come out to new home we had purchased because the Real Estate Inspector had noticed couple of things that needed to be looked at. The systems are preforming perfectly though according to the Inspector. So, I thought I would call Douglas Mechanical and have them come out and do the regular maintenance on our two separate systems and look at what the Real Estate Inspector found. Well, the gentleman comes out spends about an hour going over things. I thought he was doing maintenance to the two systems that entire time. Comes to me after that time and says he looked everything over and he will be sending me digital online estimates for what he found maybe going to fail sometime in the near future. $1,300 if I do not purchase there $299.00 a year maintenance agreement. Then left and said the office would contact me to reschedule someone to come out and clean coils and outside units and replace the things he said needed to be replaced. Charged me $250.00 for doing absolutely nothing as far as maintenance which is why I called them in the first place. Wow!!! What a rip off... Listen seems to me the days of just getting any service company to just come out to your home and do what you originally asked them to do are over. So far, I have spent almost $700.00 for the Real Estate Inspector to look at the two A/C and furnace systems and then another $250.00 to do absolutely nothing. And yet both systems are still in need of general maintenance. So, mercy sakes do honest people and honest businesses even exist anymore??? read more

They do not stand behind their work, the behavior of the first technician we had was so erratic that my tenant was afraid to be alone while he was in her house and they generally bungled the job. And now, once they finally got and installed the correct part, it is making a horrible noise but they say they won't repair it without additional charge because it's been over 30 days since the installation. He arrived early, was very knowledgeable and respectful, and fixed the problem right away to get our a/c up and running again. My daughter hired them to service her air conditioning. They have been out 6 times in the past month or so and her house is currently over 90 degrees inside. Last repairman did something and they have no after hours technicians apparently. I was originally introduced to the company via my Home Warranty. They did such a great job that I also started using them for additional (rental) properties. I purchased the silver maintenance plan (for one of my units) last year which came with fall + spring seasonal maintenance. A couple of months ago, I scheduled the spring maintenance. However, it was raining during the appointment so the tech could not complete the maintenance on the outside unit. He said I would just need to call back and get on the schedule and they would complete the second half of the spring maintenance. Fast-forward a couple of months, they are insisting I pay a $75 service charge (because of the time lapse) when they never initially completed their part of the deal. It was also acknowledged by the person on the phone they the initial tech should have scheduled me at the time (that didn't happen). There was also some confusion from their end on the maintenance plan vs. home warranty (it was NOT under a home warranty) I will be taking business for my home and rental properties elsewhere. read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY...!!!!! $28k dollar system and a $2 install..!! 28k dollars for (2) new Trane systems. New air ducts upstairs. New vents. New everything except air ducts downstairs due to the sub floor. Half ass install - they attached new ducts to my old ducts and left all old registers in place. When I called them out the owners wanted to argue about their install. They sent a technician out to my house (without appointment) to caulk the registers and my sheetrock. I kicked the technicians off my property. They were supposed to send Trane Specialist to my house to look at the install. Before Trane got here they sent 2 techs to redo the install before Trane saw what they had done. Supposed to have 2 maintenance checks per year and I have yet to get one of those. Edit 1/11/23 - still no call for my yearly maintenance check.. TRANE should STOP allowing this horrible company to install their products.. As of 7/24/2023 company has yet to call or come out for system checks or maintenance. My system quit running last week and I crawled up there and noticed the drain pan was full. After I emptied it I noticed they plumbed both units in the attic into the 3/4" over flow pipe outside my house which became clogged. This is not how the system drains are supposed to be piped in...!!! read more

I guess all the bad reviews don't warrant any type of response from management or an owner huh? Well, during the freezing and below freezing temps, our heater went out. We went through American Homeshield for our warranty and unfortunately we had a tech from this joke of a company come out. The tech was friendly enough and explained to us what was wrong and that he did a temporary fix (putting a shitty $30 thermostat on to replace our nice, expensive smart thermostat) and telling us it would be put back when the part we needed came in. Well no one ever returned and we got a call from our home warranty company saying our claim was being denied because the tech said our heater issue was from a natural disaster and it wasn't and he flat out lied because this will make them more money. While I'm unsure if it was the tech who lied in the report or their office, how very dishonest and just downright dirty. We now have another company coming out and my husband has spend hours with the warranty company trying to remedy this. They asked to have a 3 way call with the electrical company and when my husband tried they said "our manager won't do 3 way calls" and then he was hung up on. The home warranty company then called and they hung up on her. What kind of horrid human being does this company have working the phones at this company?!???? They also lied to the warrant company and said they came to our home twice and one time we didn't have power. Total lie!!! They came out once and we had power, otherwise how would the heater have worked?! They are not only liars, but cheats and I will be reporting this company to the BBB as well. I wish we could get the $60 back that we gave the tech for being so friendly and helping us so we had some warmth but we had no idea this would be the outcome. A/C unit condensate drain line was installed completely incorrectly. This was over five years ago. However, the issue only came to light during last year's very hot summer. It was not just an issue that developed over time, and it was not the result of faulty equipment. It was Douglas Mechanical's technicians installing the line incorrectly. Upon first contact, they denied that we were even a customer. So I had to provide them the paperwork proving that we were. When the technicians came and inspected the unit, they admitted the installation was "not perfect," but they asked for $700 to fix it (in addition to their $85 "visit charge). Here were the issues with the drain line: 1. The hanger strap supporting the unit was connected via a bolt on the unit panel--meaning that the panel cannot be removed without releasing the hanger strap and losing support for the unit. 2. Their men installed only one drain line, completely failing to use the second drain outlet on the unit. So if there is an overflow, the water has nowhere else to go. 3. The insulation that was put around the drain line butted right up against the unit. This means that any leaking condensation around the drain seal would travel inside the insulation instead of dripping out into the pan. 4. The ball valve shutting off the drain line was installed on the wrong side of the vent stack, meaning that we could not blow out the drain line through the vent stack if the ball valve was closed. 5. There was no insulation around the ball valve piping, meaning that whatever condensation leaked from the one drain line (See point #3 above.) traveled along the pipe between the pipe and insulation to wherever it could drip--which happened to be at the ball valve, which happened to be right above our master bedroom where the leak began to form. 6. The vent stack that their technicians installed further down the line was installed using too narrow a pipe (3/4") for a pipe snake. Even if larger pipe had been used, it was installed at a 90 degree angle to the line, making it impossible for a snake to bend and make its way through to any blockage. This would mean the pipe would have to be cut to reach any blockage. I cannot discourage you enough from using this company. Their technicians are not competent, and the company is unresponsive to complaints. read more

I wouldn't recommend this company. This company was serviced out to me by American Home Shield. Of course, American Home Shield is horrible with covering major repairs. I was suspicious of this company before they even came out to my property. The first thing they do when they receive your service request is send you a questionnaire. They basically want to know how long have you lived in the home, are you renting, buying, cost of electricity, square footage, do you plan on living longer in the home, etc. They came to my property with the mentality that my AC unit was old and needed to be replaced completely. This company is a SCAM they show up with a sales pitch before they even inspect anything. Douglas tried to sell me a whole unit for thousands of dollars. They wanted a salesperson to come out and set me up with financing. The technician wanted me to set up an appointment with his manager that same night. I asked if we could meet somewhere cool to discuss. He insisted we discuss my options in my 96 degrees home. They want to set you up to be in a uncomfortable place so you can agree to everything. I cancelled my appointment and waited to speak to AHS. If I don't trust the company before they repair the AC how can I trust the company to properly repair the AC. American Home Shield sent me the estimate the next day and it was outrageous. They claimed I needed a new compressor. This was the contractors notes. Locked rotors on compressor causing unit not to cool . I contacted AHS and requested they send the technician that usually services my AC for a second opinion. He came out the next morning and said he needed to replace a relay. He had me up and running in no time. He was honest and I can inform I'm writing this review from the comfort of my cool home. Do not use Douglas Mechanical unless you want to fall into their SCAM!!! read more

Unfortunately this is the company we are working with due to our home warranty. This company has been irresponsible and unresponsive on so many counts. Their tech has been to our home several times, at one point came with the wrong part, had to reschedule with the correct part. Did not show up to the appt with the correct part. The "correct" part did not fix the issue and after coming out again identified another probable cause for the issues we are having. Scheduled to come out and fix it on Friday (6 days ago) and again did not show up. No phone call, nothing. We called Friday, Monday, and Tuesday with no response. read more

Imagine this, it is the week of Christmas, and your furnace goes out. Now I do have a home warranty and I called and did not think that a company would come out on Christmas Eve, but Douglas Mechanical did, I was surprised when they scheduled a tech to come out on Christmas Eve. Josh showed up about 11:00 am and diagnosed the issue, the control board was not working because my unit was not turning on. It was Monday or Tuesday after Christmas that my warranty company called me to inform me that they were going to replace the furnace, they also needed to go over the additional charges that I needed to cover. When I first purchased my home, I had a different home warranty company who covered the other furnace replacement full cost (I should tell you I have 2 units) So I was surprised that I was being presented with a bill for $1,400.00. Now when I signed up with this warranty company, I told them I wanted the same coverage as I had with my other home warranty company which was like platinum where everything was covered. So, I was not incredibly happy that I did not have coverage. A week went by, and I did not hear anything, so I called the home warranty company to get the status. They told me that I had not given my authorization, I told them I spoke to a representative a week ago they told me they would have Douglas contact me. I spoke to a dispatcher, who explained what was going on, at this point, I was not in a good right of mind, because she said they would have to source my furnace. Wait you are a heating a cooling contractor, so I wanted to speak to a manager, she was able to put me in contact with a manager who explained how all this worked, I was going to get builders closeout, (not what I wanted) I do not want to have to deal with this issue again. Jared and I spoke for at least a good half hour if not more, I explained my concerns and he understood. I asked about replacing the entire system, Furnace, Air Conditioning, Air Cleaner, UV Cleaner. Jared told me he would get back to me within the hour. Within half an hour I had 4 options to pick from. Since these systems are the heart and soul of a house, I went with the most energy-efficient system along with all the other items that I wanted. Jared could have also had the system installed on Saturday, but I waited until Monday morning. His team was here right at 9:00 AM and had the entire system installed by 12:30 or 1:00 PM the latest. If I could give Jared and his team ten platinum stars for customer service, I would recommend Douglas Mechanical to anyone and everyone. I have already started to tell my co-workers about them, so when they have issues, they will be calling. I am planning to replace the other system the other warranty company replaced in 2019 in March and Douglas Mechanical will be doing the installation. They are a great company to work with. read more

Douglas mechanical was assigned by our home warranty company to service our ac issue. Their technician came out the next day(Friday)as scheduled to access the problem. I contacted them Monday morning to get an update and was told that they had not received approval for the work order. I contacted the home warranty company to follow up and they told me nothing had been submitted yet. I call Douglas mechanical back and was told they would follow up. I called Home warranty Tuesday morning after hearing nothing and was told they still had not received the report. I then called Douglas Mechanical back, informed them of the home warranty's statement and they said they would get it done right away even though they initially told me that they were waiting on the Home Warranty's approval of their supposed submitted report! Once they did they received approval to do the work within 30 minutes of submitting. I was contacted later in the day that someone would be at our home on Wednesday between 12-2pm. I contacted Douglas on Wednesday when no one showed at the appointed time window and no one contacted me. They stated that it appeared the service call was pulled due to parts not available. The job entailed replacing wiring and I questioned "what parts". I was told I would get a call back once they figured out what was going on. After not receiving a callback, I tried contacting the company repeatedly with no one answering my calls. I then called the main line to speak to a manager, that was in the morning. I received a call back at 6:30 that evening to let me know they are working on getting someone out to me but would probably be a couple of days at best. I was also informed that we would have non covered charges of $775.00!! I questioned these charges and listened to the explanation. I immediately called another company who came out first thing the next morning and was able to assess the issue and make the necessary repair in less than 30 minutes and only charged their $80 service call fee! Bottom line - Communication was deplorable with Douglas Mechanical and tried to charge outrageous fees to me individually and who knows what they were going to stick the home warranty with! After looking through other reviews of Douglas Mechanical, it appears their is a common theme with negative experiences that are home warranty related. read more

My appointment was for between 7 and 11 and he did not show up until after 1pm. They tried to up sell me services that are covered. I think American Home Shield should discontinue using them, and I will be letting them know. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!! The install techs ripped a giant hole in the wall to fit the new inside unit, then just left it that way!!! I was told I had to go out and buy a new cover!! Hot air poured in from the attic until I covered the hole with a make-shift patch. The install techs also showed me a fuzzy pic of the attic duct, saying it was old and had torn. They refused to repair it, even though it was most likely due to their negligence. The entire brand new $11K system stopped working all together. Numerous calls and messages to the company went unanswered and unreturned. I even called the salesman's cell phone, but same result. Had a new AC system installed a few months ago it was a two stage Trane which helps keep humidity down noticed I had had humidity issues (60-70%) but wanted to wait until hot months to fine tune the Freon level and the humidity issue. I am having to run a dehumidifier 24 seven which I have to dump out four times a day which is 4 to 6 gallons of water where the AC should be doing this my AC runs 3/4 of the day to try and keep humidity down but it won't go below 60% First tech after a week came out said it was a wire issue not connected to thermostat properly so they had special crew come out several days later not the next day like I should have to run a new wire Second tech came out which was the same crew who installed it noticed it wasn't a wire issue but a installation issue they didn't do the right switch over on the control board Still having high humidity issues up to 70% like before. Call them back to let him know they avoid my phone calls but when I talk to them I get the runaround of course they already got paid so why should they want to do a good service still waiting for train tech or somebody to come out and look again or even call the manufacture every day it's something new tech out of town Specialist out of town I'll call you before noon they never do so I know they have some good ratings but this one here this is the true work they give you after the sale forget it they'll screw you over I am pretty sure the good ratings they have are from basic service faces which yes I believe people are happy because they got their AC back up man was a total new unit $11,000 and this is what I get in return. read more

I was referred to Douglas Mechanical by AHS due to my AC not coming on. They called me the same day and scheduled my service appointment for the very next day for 7-11 am. Eric was the technician that came out, he called 30 mins before his arrival and was very courteous and kind. Eric was very knowledgeable and answered every question that I had. He was able to solve the problem in a timely manner and I was very pleased with his professionalism. Sadly he informed me as to how old my unit was but was very kind enough to offer a solution to that problem as well. I may not have been able to afford a new unit with Douglas Mechanical at this time but I will definitely consider them when I am able to afford a new AC Unit. read more

Avoid at all costs. My home warranty company contracted them for an A/C system repair. Took several days to get the contractor out for a repair initially, who then also tried to give a quote for $1,000+ on top for extra unneeded work. Less than a week later, had A/C system issue again which led to again several days waiting for the contractor to come out to diagnose. It took 13 days to get an estimate sent to home warranty for repair, including a $1,900 quote that would be my cost, again for unnecessary work, on top of what the home warranty would cover for repair. [A second opinion was done by another HVAC company initiated by the home warranty company that stated these extras were unnecessary: no code issues, etc.] 25 days later in trying to get A/C repaired, only a few hundred dollars is what this company said to the home warranty company would be the cost to purchase and replace the entire furnace and inside A/C unit, limiting the cash out option as we did not want to use this company to complete repairs. The entire unit had to be replaced, which cost a lot more than a few hundred dollars. [Ended up using a different company to complete replacement of system.] read more

My transformer was replaced on Feb 3rd 2021, and a few hours after setting my thermostat to heat on February 13th (before the Houston freeze) the thermostat died and I was left without heat. After desperate calls, I was offered a service on Wednesday, February 17th ... no sense of obligation or urgency to repair what they'd done! I was able to get another HVAC company in and they showed me how the wiring was incorrect, which is what caused the transformer to blow. So, not only incompetent, but also unprofessional. read more

They were referred by my home warranty company to repair my a/c. I only received a verbal diagnosis of my problem. I requested a written report the next day from the company that showed I need a compressor replacement and I was responsible for the Freon. When they submitted the report to the warranty company two days later, they added non-communicated code violations that I would be responsible to pay. I was using these guys bc my home warranty assigned them. They have been out there 7 times now and it still is not running. They have replaced the compressor 2x now, fan once, said the coils froze up bc of dirty filter. I asked them which filter was dirty and never answered or gave me a pic. They have already got 1200$ out of me. They will never receive a penny more. Either they don't know what they are doing or they are trying to milk me for every cent. I understand that my system is old. I was told that i had to pay the 1200 bc the compressor would not work with what i had. No problem. Justin kept pitching me on an "upgrade" for 4-5k. If i need un upgrade i will for sure not use these guys. I would give my money to anyone else. I have someone else there now and they say the gas pressure is way too high. That means they did not check it or put the wrong gas in there. Never again. To be continued... just found out they had over pressurized the gas and that's why it was not working. All the new company did was let out enough gas until it was at normal pressure levels. That's the reason they burned through a new compressor so quickly. read more

This company is a scam. My home warranty company sent them out. There was no attempt made to fix the unit, they just immediately sent out a salesman. They gave us a bid to replace both units (even though the downstairs unit is working totally fine). The bid was for $28k! Obscene! I instead had someone come out and replace the broken unit for $7k. Paid $1200 through our Home Warranty to then find out that the service that was contracted was not performed at all causing our tenant to have to leave our house because it was too hot. On top of that their ability to fix the situation took several days and their customer service was one of apathy. With our multiple homes, you would think that a good contractor is one we would want to continue to partner with and use frequently. That's not going to happen with this company. They were good nice and professional for the most part except the technician that came out for the inspection may have damaged the system further by hitting a line with his knee and breaking the line away from the condenser. The technician and manager both lied to us about payouts for First American Home Warranty on replacing the unit. They both told us that First American would give us a $1500 payout if we replaced the entire unit, but they would take care of collecting the money from First American at "the end of the month". After further questioning of the Douglas Mechanical office staff, we learned that it was just a "discount" that Douglass Mechanical gives for First American customers and their was no money actually being collected by Douglas Mechanical. However, it's really not a discount at all since the original price is already grossed up to make up for the difference. We believe Douglas Mechanical is just using First American to get their sales people into peoples homes and convince them to buy a new AC system. This wouldn't be so bad if they were just honest about everything. read more
