I had purchased a 19th century Dutch painting on a wood panel and framed in an ornate frame with a linen liner. I had spotted it in Puerto Rico and since I'm of Dutch heritage it resonated with me and I had to have it. When I finally purchased it months later and had it shipped to me, looking at it closely, I realized it was in poor shape. The lining was mildewed, frame had some chips in it and the overall painting was dirty (as one might expect since it was old). I wanted to have it cleaned so I did some research and came upon Sysphere Restoration. Sy was very personable, explaining the process of what needed to be done. I was balking at the cost but since I really liked the painting I decided to splurge on it. The end result was amazing. The scene was so much brighter and clean looking, the linen renewed and the frame refurbished. Sy breathed new life into it. We have all heard of a story of someone finding an old portrait up in the attic and wonder if it was done by a famous artist! (Rembrandt, Van Gogh) This is not my story... But... I did receive a box from a deceased distant relative filled with family documents and an old rolled up oil painting. After some time, I was able to figure out that this was my great-great grandfather's brother from the 1860's. It was very damaged as the varnish and paint was cracked and looked very aged. What should I do? After some research, I was referred to Syshere Conservation here in San Francisco. At our initial meeting he did an evaluation of the oil painting and explained all that was going to be entailed to do a complete restoration. I took a large figurative painting to Sy that had a scrape in the hair and the background. Other restorers would not take the painting because of the complexity of matching the background which was different shades of black. Sy took on the challenge and did an amazing job of matching the background which was no easy task and took several steps. He also did an exceptional job of varnishing the painting and the end result is a gorgeous painting. I came to Sysphere with a 1890s lithograph of the Folies-Bergère - Les Demoiselles du XXe Siecle. The the 100 year old artwork by Louis Trinquier-Trianon had belonged to my mother and it was badly damaged with multiple tears in the paper, with some pieces missing. Sy told me that he could restore it and he did exactly that! His conservation artwork is 2nd to none. The damages are completely gone, and he was able to mount the lithograph onto an acid-free backing. He is easy to work with, friendly, and filled with wonderful stories of the art world. Sy is an art historian and a consummate artist himself. He generously shared some of his own paintings/drawings with me and they are quite special. He has such a wonderful eye for composition, imagery, color, and detail -- it's no wonder that he was able to bring my lithograph back to life so beautifully. I have a painting from the 1940's that has both historical and personal significance. It had been damaged, both with a scratch and a spot where it had been handled incorrectly. Due to shipment and storage in poor conditions, I had an oil painting painted in 1965 start flaking and bubbling very badly. I was pretty heartbroken as the painting is lovely though not valuable. First I took it to one conservationist and he repaired it (supposedly) but it continued to flake. I wouldn't go back to him to throw good money after bad. Then I found Sysphere. I found hundreds of letters rummaging through my father's things from his Korean War experience when he served as a Marine with his two brothers.
