Thank you for the final save. Like most photos before this digital era, I have one copy of a picture of my mother and me when I was a child. No negatives, no photographer or digital file to reference. And my mother presented this photo to me in the same frame it has been in since the 1980s. Unfortunately, time wore on this picture so much that there were stains; the photo was damp and stuck to the glass and began to rip. I worked with Jason to restore this image. He was able to scan the image through the glass, correct the lighting, and have quite a few issues with the photo. With a whole lot of patience, the picture was restored. There's a strange duality to my existence because I spend half my time dedicated to the freelance curatorship of various antiquities, and the other half fucking around on web 2.0 with the rest of gen-Y. It's a weird product of modern existence and mild antisocial tendencies. I'm a catch! Anyway, some of these antiquities include photos of the family W. dating from the 1920's, which are understandably marked and faded and in a state of general decline. It was important that I figure out the best possible course for preservation, not only because I'm a preservationist but also because the family W. is extremely attractive and faded sepia was just not doing them justice. I rescued (very) old photos from my grandmother's house in Puerto Rico. Years of mishandling, heat and humidity took a toll on the only photos of my grandfather when he was 19, my grandparent's wedding portrait and one of my mom and her three siblings as tiny tots. Yelp comes through again! I had two very old, irreplaceable photographs of my great-grandmother. Both were taken in the old country and showed lots of "character," including a missing corner and all sorts of wrinkles and creases on one and stains and general discoloration on the other. I was very reluctant to send them off to some restoration place sight unseen, so I relied on Jason Rose's reviews here and it's a good thing I did. Jason was super quick to respond to my e-mail and even came to my office for a consultation and to pick up the originals. One photo Jason restored for me was from a visit to Cape Cod when I was six years old, with me wearing my favorite sweater at the time. I have long treasured this photo of a very happy beach trip, and as such the picture had become very sun-bleached over the years. Jason did an excellent job restoring the color and contrast. I was particularly pleased with Jason's understanding in getting the color of the sweater exactly right (even though this took a few rounds of edits and I was describing the color from memory), because I wanted the photo to match the memory precisely. I just went with my gut instinct and am so happy! We have two photos - one of each of my in-laws and they are the only pics of them pre-1990s. They are very small, cracked, worn down and faded. I inherited a 1918 stereoscopic photograph of school children standing in front of a school. It had been rolled up and was so badly cracked and foxed that I didn't dare unroll it for fear of damaging it further. I entrusted it to Jason Rose, and he succeded way beyond my wildest expectations. A piece of the archway in the school building entrance had been torn away, and Jason was able to restore it by flipping the other side of the arch to make it whole. You could see clearly and distinctly each child looking at you with his or her mischevious grin across 86 years; one of them was my grandmother. After I found Jason on Yelp, he came to my office after we exchanged calls and emails. We met, discussed terms, costs, etc. I handed him my precious photograph and off he went. A day later, he emailed me a statement, I approved the charges and in three weeks I had my prints and a jpeg on a CD. I needed to have an enlargement made for my sister's Memorial Service. Time was short, and in the picture her husband selected, my sister needed to be extracted from an old photo of her with her husband. A young photographer friend recommended Jason Rose so I contacted him immediately. He had a very full workload already, but somehow he managed to work this commission into his schedule--and did a PHENOMENAL job!! I feared the 20" x 22" enlargement might be grainy, but in NO WAY is it grainy, and the color is better than the original. It is mounted it on a polystyrene board with a slim gold border. My brother-in-law will fall in love with my sister all over again! If there were 10 stars instead of just 5, I'd give Jason 10 stars....and I'm a very discerning person when it comes to quality. We haven't even met! We negotiated completely by phone and email. Furthermore, Jason was forever professional, gracious, responsible and wanting to please. I found Jason on Yelp, while trying to find a way to salvage a quickly fading photo booth picture strip...for my mother in law. Who doesn't want to get in their MIL's good graces?! Anyway, I emailed Jason a scan and due to the poor quality of the original he was able to restore it, but he didn't have much hope for doing any enlargements. When I sent him the original he was actually able to improve the quality to the point that he was able to make enlargements! His work is fabulous, my MIL was thrilled with her saved pictures. Jason's customer service is also excellent. He responds quickly to any questions and is very good at communicating throughout the process. I had never used a photo restoration service before so I really didn't know what to look for. I happened to run across a reference to Jason Rose here on Yelp and he was local to me so I gave him a try. He took a 75-year old, faded, sepia photo that had been ripped in half and then taped back together sometime in the past (over someone's face, by the way) and turned it into a seemingly new, fresh photo! The people, who seemed rather lifeless and bland in the faded original family photo, now seem so much more lifelike and "real" in this restored version.
