What I got was boiled meat (didn't look like it had been stir fried in any way) and a few shrimp swimming in a dark brown, oily sauce with no flavor. It *looks* like it will be good, but it's not. Edible, yes, but that's not saying much. It was a disappointment for the money spent. I wish more Chinese food places in America would offer authentic food. Not all Americans want this bland stuff. Plenty of us would like to try some real flavor and ditch the syrupy, soggy dishes that have become the norm. I wish a place called Szechuan Cafe would offer an authentic kung pao chicken dish. Went in today and was met with extremely rude service from an older lady. I normally never leave reviews and I'm very understanding towards employees since I've worked in customer service myself, but my grandma was treated badly for no reason and our food was not as good as it normally is. One of our sushi rolls didn't even have any filling in it, and my soup was barely filled. I was extremely unhappy with how we were treated when we asked simple questions as well. read more

The food was ok, nothing great. Be aware they do not devein their shrimp for their dishes which was a little unappealing. Additionally, the customer service was not great and kind of rude when picking up. Certainly not the way you earn repeat customers or retain them. But then moved from the area. Then I moved back, and ended up attending a birthday celebration here. Then planned another celebration for my MIL. They easily took my reservation for 10 people. The restaurant isn't super big. But it can hold told at least 2 larger parties (8-10 ppl)at once. Also if you coming on a Friday evening, Saturday or Sunday. I have Asian food all throughout the DC Balitmore corridor. The sushi and Chinese food are on par if not better than many of the nicer Chinese restaurants that I've patronized. Good but unfortunately their portion sizes are poor. The food tasted amazing and actually better than a lot of Chinese restaurants in the area but the poor portion sizes make it lackluster. I had delivery through grubhub and the 'cup' of miso soup I got may as well have been a half cup, my unagi don (eel over rice) cost 15.00 for five pieces of eel and a bed of rice so shallow it didn't even fill me up afterwards. Yelp, you never steer me wrong. We always go to the same places to eat when visiting my parents. We decided to go out of the box and try Szechuan Cafe. Awsome! First we ordered home made egg rolls with fresh tasting cabbage a nice size shrimp, fried perfectly. Also had wonton soup also above average. The real treat came when our sushi order arrives (picture included above) and a lucky family. The lucky family was a bit different than most in a good way. The picture of the sushi says it all. I am new to the area and while shopping at Giant Eagle decided to head in and sample the cuisine. I love chow mein and I always order this so that I can compare something across all restaurants I visit. I ordered the shrimp toast and szechuan beef as well. Honestly, I was not a big fan of any of the dishes..............the chow mein comes with a bag of what looks like croutons or baked/deep fried (?) little strips on the side and the sauce is like a white gel. The shrimp toast looked more like shrimp balls and the szechuan beef had a LOT of hoisin sauce in it:( The people who work her seem really delightful and especially the gentleman who took my order. I might give it one more try because the quality of the shrimp, meat and chicken seemed very good. I think I just made bad choices in the dishes I picked..................... My fiancé and I have been having trouble finding decent Chinese food we like near us (when we lived in Millersville). The best we found so far was East Moon Bistro in Glen Burnie, but now that we moved to Pasadena we decided to try this place out. I had been here once before with a friend and remember liking it, and now that I live right by it, I'm excited to have a good Chinese food place that's close. My reason for the 4 stars (rather than 5) is that none of their soups are vegetarian. They do have soups without meat, HOWEVER, they are all chicken broth-based. Why ruin a perfectly fine vegetarian soup with chicken broth? They even have a veggie and tofu soup, so why not make it completely vegetarian!? And it sucks because I love hot and sour soup and I order it everytime I go to a Chinese food restaurant. :/ Anyway, other than that, our meals were delicious and I think this may be our go-to from now on, unless one of the other options nearby is better. Food aside, the atmosphere that night was so fun! When I went with my friend, it was just a normal evening, but for some reason, this past Friday night was like huge party! And not a party as in they had a DJ, or people were dancing and walking around socializing. It was a party because of Mr. Kim! I'm not sure if he was the owner or not. He was dressed nicely, but there was another man there who was also dressed nicely and walking around making sure everyone was enjoying their food. Maybe Mr. Kim was retiring and this was his goodbye party? But he was walking around table to table, getting everyone free sake bombs and taking one with them! He would yell out and we'd all sing the sake bomb chant, even people at other tables and then he, along with whatever table he was at, would take a sake bomb. He even went up to a table with elderly ladies (who didn't join him in drinking any sake bombs), but they still waved their hands in the air and chanted with him as he drank his own. During the time we were there he did this with at least 4 groups of people (including us). I would not be able to keep up with him if I had that many! He was a lot of fun and made the whole restaurant lively. But even without that experience, the service there was also great. We'll definitely be back! read more

Bottom Line: Quaint and cozy atmosphere and tasty Chinese cuisine. Overall, I had a nice experience at this family owned Chinese restaurant in Pasadena. Although I was here on a packed, rainy Friday night the restaurant was comfortable without being too loud or cramped. Our waitress didn't speak too much English but she had a kind smile and was attentive. All of the dishes we ordered had good flavor and I particularly enjoyed the Mu Shu Pork. The "pancakes" served with the Mu Shu Pork were thicker like flour tortillas but this was actually more practical for filling them with the plum sauce and pork. The decor is nice here too. I appreciate the crisp white linen napkins and the Chinese inspired dishes. Also, the staff dresses nicely. read more

The food is always consistent, the portions are huge, the service is the best and Mr.Johnny is one of the nicest owners you ever want to meet he is always walking the floor asking his customers if everything is good and always with a smile. So I have given this place excellent reviews nut have not been there for about 10 months. Very disappointed with carry out order today picked up around 4pm. The shrimp fried rice was not very good. When I went to Szechuan Cafe I was greeted with owner Johnny he was very kind and respectful. While I was there I tried many of their food including sushi. The sushi was so delicious and definitely will be coming back for more! The pricing of the sushi is very reasonable and not too expensive which I love. For years and years we have heard about this place and for one reason or another we never visited...until tonight. We ordered three sushis and kung pao chicken. The sushi was cut into giant pieces! There was no good way to cut it (and who cuts sushi anyway) and so the entire piece has to go in your mouth...not a pretty sight or easy to chew! It was very bland, no flavor really. The kung pao chicken had chicken cut in teeny pieces, really no flavor or spicey kick to it either! We were very disappointed and will not return. Based on other Yelper's, we tried this place. First thing I noticed, the owner knew his customers names. So I'm imagining he must have quite a few regulars if he knows them by name. If he has that many regulars, the food must be dynamite. Second thing I noticed, from the owners to the workers, they all had a great sense of humor. The place was packed on the day before thanksgiving, but the atmosphere was light and friendly. It's hard to describe why it stuck out in my mind, but it was pretty neat. Third thing was my food was ready when they said it would be. And then the food! It was delicious. Soup, egg rolls, spring rolls, main dishes... All wonderful. For a place to be ranked 4 stars after 50+ reviews on Yelp, you figure it must be good and it didn't disappoint. Even though I live in Arnold, I'll keep driving here for my Chinese food. Do yourself a favor and make the drive to Pasadena to eat at Szechuan Cafe! First of all, every dish i have ever had here is flavorful and delicious. The sushi menu is large (just like the rolls!) with many choices and it is always always fresh. The service is the best i have ever had! The waiters will make jokes and treat you like you are long lost friends. Also, the owner, Mr Tim, is the biggest sweetheart EVER! One night he sat down with us and discussed his business and how he got started. He told us that he travels to china ever few months in order to collect spices and ingredients for his dishes, and decor for the restaurant. Mr. Tim also told us that most of the staff have been there for many many years, so that must be a testament to how the employees are treated. And it shows! what a happy place. I went to Szechuan Cafe for my birthday and my party group was treated very well. We received a huge plate of fried dough and sugar, and they played a happy birthday song for me over the speakers.. OH and did i mention the Sake Bombs? Nothing else would do until me and my whole group did sake bombs with Mr Tim and the whole staff. (all complements of Mr Tim!) In fact, don't be surprised when you hit off on a convo with Mr. Tim he wont want to do some sake bombs with you. This WAS my go to place, never disappointed, food used to be great, but tonight I had to turn my back on them. Crab rangoons=no crab. Chicken fried rice=covered in brown sauce with a weird taste and no vegetables in the mix. Orange chicken=weird chemical taste from the sauce and the chicken was tough and cut way too big to be enticing. Why was everything covered in that brown sauce, yuck. The only thing that was edible was the combo salad and the vegetarian spring rolls. I am really disappointed, but I'm not the type to get fooled twice; especially when I fork out $50 expecting some good food. Sorry to say it, but they went from hero to zero in my book. The owner (Tim) is so friendly and so amazing! And I have nothing but good things to say about the staff and food. Everything is fresh and delicious (sushi and all!!) It was totally packed tonight and Tim kept us all entertained and full of sake bombs. You can tell that it is all about making the customers happy, even under super crowded circumstances. I love coming here and you will too. 5 stars all around. I do suggest the orange chicken and the ultimate tuna roll or the Tim roll!
