My 15 year old chose this restaurant to have his birthday dinner. He had never been here before. The people that work here are so incredibly nice. Most of the time we do Take Out! Always ready when they say ( usually before)! We have not had issues with accuracy. Always hot (even the fried appetizers). Full of delicious flavors! I wish I loved this place, but unfortunately, I was let down. I haven't been to Szechuan Cafe since the 90s since it was in GB, and it looks like the quality has gone downhill. The good: my sushi was good (butterfly roll) The bad: everything else was meh. The beef and broccoli: the beef is a bit starchy and has a thick coating. The shrimp lo mein: was not memorable. The white rice: very dry. Avoid: the Jade Lobster. They were skimpy on the caribbean lobster and it didn't really matter because the texture was so off (maybe it was frozen)? The sauce was very bland, which made the veggies bland. It was not worth $30+ Overall, I spent about $90 for the family and I probably would not return. read more

The sushi is very good, but their service is literally the worst I've ever experienced at a restaurant. I've gone back 5 or 6 times because I like the sushi so much and without exception the service has failed in every way they could possibly fail; this includes never bringing drinks to the table (and I mean we got through the whole meal without the drinks coming). Additionally and very importantly: my fiancé is allergic to shellfish and after going there twice herself and ordering non-shellfish meals she had severe reactions to the food. They must not be bothered to prevent cross contamination of their ingredients. read more

I only decided to come back a third time because it was my brothers birthday and he loves the food, but holy hell the service has been awful each time. The hostess is just plain mean (unless she's white worshipping). She has got to be the absolute worst part of this whole place. I have worked as a hostess before and I would never have treated customers the way this woman does. I've noticed how she only seems to smile and greet white people. I'm not even joking like literally ignores every minority coming in, especially my family and I. And it's not like she's just neutral around us, I mean she genuinely gives us horrible looks and glares at us when we leave... Eyebrows guy is cool, but if he's the owner, I hope he actually reads reviews and takes complaints seriously because there's no reason anyone should be treated the way we did by this woman. Like I get it. White supremacy is popular these days, but do it on your own time and not at a place of business. Geez. Finally, the server forced us to pay a $15 tip straight up on bill. She just charged us without letting us decide. I know they say there's a 18% gratuity fee from parties of 5 or more, but we were 4 people :( They didn't do this to us last time and I have no idea why they did this time. Personally after my first experience, I didn't want to come back, but again, I didn't want to disappoint my little brother. Judging by the fact that there is always a line to get in here at night, Szechuan Café should be nothing short of five stars. It's our third time here and this time we are here because we got a gift certificate for Christmas. Luckily we got here before 630 because thats when the line forms at the door. And the takeout line is almost as long. This family run establishment runs like a perfectly greased wheel. Everyone who is working here does every job. You never go long without an unfilled water glass or beverage. Plates are cleared discreetly and quietly without interrupting you. The table settings include high-quality napkins which are sadly missing today at many of the places we dine. And you don't have to ask for extras because they always give you a couple extra. Plus everyone who works here smiles at every table as they walk by. It's just really good old fashioned service that makes our experience even better. But none of that would matter if the food didn't live up. Well the food does live up to our expectations and in fact often times exceeds our expectations. The portion sizes are large. Presentation is wonderful and the food is great. There aren't enough superlatives. I just know that I'm glad to have found this place and we will be back often. read more

Best Chinese food in Pasadena for several years in a row....I think not. After speaking to a few people I heard that this place sold a year or two back. Maybe in it's past life did it earn the title of best Chinese food in Pasadena but these days it is far from it. My husband and I have lived in the area for several years and always wanted to try Szechuan Cafe. We heard great things about it and all through the shutdown they had a line out the door for carry out. What could go wrong? Well just about everything but the egg roll. I have to give credit where it is due and say they had probably the best egg roll I have had since moving to Maryland away from my go to Chinese restaurant in NJ. It contained baby shrimp and overall was delicious. The cup of egg drop soup was good taste wise but was barely warm. My husband ordered the Kung Pao Chicken combination dish with pork fried rice. The rice was rather dry and the Kung Pao Chicken had the peanuts just thrown on top, not mixed in with the meal like you normally find. He also ordered the Scallop lo mein. Upon first bit it completely lacked taste. He opted to save it for lunch the next day and was able to whip it up in his wok after throwing some sauce and seasonings in it to give it some flavor. I had the vegetable lo mein with pork fried rice. I also didn't get much flavor out of my lo mein and didn't really enjoy it. I ate a little bit of it and then combined it with my husband's lo mein for his lunch the next day. I was very disappointed due to my high expectations after the great feedback I have heard about this place. I will not be returning. read more

Szechuan Cafe has been our go to for years and years. The food is great the restaurant is very clean and they offer a sushi bar as well. The ambiance is sit down and well appointed they do offer carry out and delivery. Staff and service is friendly. We love the house fried rice, Shrimp with lobster sauce it tasty with large shrimp. And the large egg rolls are really good. All the brown sauce based dishes along with the light sauce based dishes hit the mark. Hard to find this type of place where all the dishes are good but Szechuan Cafe does. read more

The pad Thai was very sweet, more overly sweet lo mein sauce than the fish sauce funk of pad Thai sauce. The general Tso chicken and shrimp was a lot of breading to shrimp ratio. The portion size for the price, seems to not fit. We ate it but won't order from here again. read more

The customer service leaves much to be desired. The hostesses near the front door in particular seem to hold a racial bias and like to exclusively greet white people--as a non-white person, I can attest that they have repeatedly ignored me and my family every time we've entered and left the restaurant after several visits, while I see her maintaining friendly rapport with white customers. We have been ordering here since they opened. The food has continued to go downhill. Last night we ordered Orange Chicken which is to be spicy - it was not and the chicken rubbery. The appetizer was the crepes, which are wontons filled with cream cheese and crabmeat. The wonton was chewy. We noticed that with the dumplings so stopped ordering those. Plenty of cream cheese and minimal crabmeat if any; as, there was zero crab flavor. This was carry-out. We arrived 10 minutes before the order was to be ready and it was already sitting there. We live close but by the time we got home the crepes were COLD. Orange chicken we could heat-up. Very disappointing. read more

Used to love this place. Unfortunately I got to see what they really are like. Rude and uncaring. Spent 3.5 hours waiting in their tiny waiting area packed with other people. They had no system to call out names. After waiting 3 1/2 hours was still treated like I was doing something wrong for wanting to see if they were even preparing my order. At least two different people were very rude and uncaring. Should've at least offered a gift card since I spent my whole Christmas Eve with them! Used to be the very best in the area, but lately, the food is not as good as it used to be. Sauces are heavy and salty, and used to be lighter and fresh. Maybe I just hit a few off nights. I hope whatever is going on is just a momentary blip and the quality will improve. Addition.. After a few months we decided to try again. The results were not good. Our hot and sour soup tasted like flour had been added at the last minute to thicken. There was a strong pepper taste and no other taste in the soup. Perpetually disappointed with the Chinese options in Severna Park, and with Jack's Fortune too far for takeout, I decided to branch out to Pasadena. Started with Szechuan Cafe, which apparently was once the undisputed champ, but lately is getting more mixed reviews. One thing did make me nervous: Asian fusion is fine, but restaurants that try to do two cuisines rarely do both well. Ordered take out: shrimp egg roll, hot and sour soup, and szechuan beef. The latter is a favorite and figured the restaurant should do well with a dish that shares its name. The egg rolls were crispy and tasty, and a little greasy. I was blessed to have excellent hot and sour soup as a child and thought it would always be that good, only to be disappointed many times over. This one comes close to my memory, so I'll give it 8 out of 10. The entree serving was generous, with a good meat to veggie ratio. The beef was tender and cooked well. The level of spice was on the light end but grew as I ate. Unfortunately the sauce could have been more flavorful and maybe less conspicuous. It coated everything. 6.5 out of 10. Overall 4 stars. I would go back, order the hot and sour soup and some other entrees. Still staying away from the sushi. The name is Chinese and I have other good sushi options closer to me. read more

I just got back from spending 3-1/2 years in Japan and have been looking for a new Chinese Restaurant after discovering that my former favorite Chinese Restaurant had closed, I had tried several Chinese restaurants in May area and was about to give up and just settle....but it was suggested that I try the "Szechuan Cafe" in Pasadena MD. As it turns out Szechuan Cafe was TOTALLY Awesome!! The restaurant was so good that it surpassed my former favorite restaurant by leaps and bounds...The place was tastefully decorated, it was warm, inviting and a comfortable place to dine. The waitress was so friendly and helpful, she helped me navigate the large selection of appetizers and entrees. I had the Crab Rangoons and Shrimp Toast as appetizers, and General Tso Chicken, the Crab Rangoons were crispy and delicious, the Shrimp Toast was generously filled and very flavorful, General Tso Chicken was not too sweet, or too spicy but just the perfect balance of both, the Chicken was large portions and tender. Szechuan Cafe is now my ALL-TIME FAVORITE CHINESE RESTAURANT! I fully recommend trying this place if your looking for great food and place to eat. read more

Look no further for the perfect, HUGE PORTION, sushi roll- the pink lady. It is worth every dollar and lasts me two meals. It is soft, with the perfect crunch on top. The spicy mayo adds just enough kick to the shrimp and crab. I love it, and have been ordering it for carry out for years. Very consistent. This place is a hidden gem.
