Shopping in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii... DFS stands for Duty Free Shoppers. It's known worldwide for tax-free merchandise. They're often at airports and we usually have to show our passports to buy items.. Example: my travel partner likes to buy cigarettes and alcohol to bring home for her family. She had to declare her items when returning to the USA and show her passport. I've seen the DFS advertisements in magazines on the airplanes. I'm not really into name brands or expensive items. However... The other day, when I was running through the store (trying to see if there was a shortcut between Royal Hawaiian Avenue and Lewers Street), I saw a Miffy display, but didn't have time to look. I told myself that I'd come back... And I did! Miffy is a cute bunny from Amsterdam who is usually white with an orange dress. Apparently, people from Japan are fans of Miffy... I even saw a Miffy store in Tokyo! Anyway, there were a few customers speaking Japanese and looking at Miffy plushies. There also were Miffy keychains that I haven't seen before. (There's a Miffy store at Royal Hawaiian Center and a store in Kapolei has some Miffy items.) I had to get one! I browsed around and saw cosmetics, fragrances, purses, sunglasses, tote bags, jams and jellies, snacks, and more! I didn't even go upstairs to look! I guess I need to return! Service was very polite and helpful! I asked if Hawaii residents can make a purchase without a passport... yes! The sales clerk even got me to sign up for their rewards program: DFS Circle. Loved the stunning decorations here! I briefly shopped but didn't buy anything since we were hungry and heading out for dinner. But stop here for a quick photo shoot if you can, it's beautiful! What a pleasant addition to my neighborhood, a level of shopping exploration and fun totally unlike the duty-free shops you see at airports. If you're visiting Waikiki I would definitely add this to my retail stroll down Kalakaua Avenue along with the nearby Royal Hawaiian Center and International Marketplace. It makes a great third stop. Closed for almost three years during the pandemic, we were all worried it would remain a boarded up reminder of hard times. But as of mid 2023 they've signed a new 18 year lease and they're opening it up in phases starting with the ground floor. I live half a mile away and see it as a block-long fantasy oasis where you can walk in one side and come out the other instead of the crowds, heat, and occasional rainstorm outside. It's full of local packaged food, toys, and upscale gifts... a good option for taking a souvenir back home, also buying luxury brand creams, perfumes, coasters, Hawaii-themed neck pillows, and other unnecessaries. They did a fantastic, surreal job with the redecoration. The grand scale, instagrammable Aloha signs, and copious giant flower ornaments make it feel like a cross between Willy Wonka's chocolate river, a Disney World dark ride, and Neiman Marcus without so many blouses. I would give 5 stars to the worker that was in another department that came over to make me my Dole Whip since there was no one there. She apologized for no one at the Dole Whip counter. We tried to offer her a tip but she wouldn't take it in a nice sincere way. I would give negative stars to the older female DFS worker that I guess is a greeter who was oh so polite to the Japanese tourist but snobbed us when we tried to ask where was the Dole Whip because there was no obvious worker in the area. I would give negative stars to the male DFS worker who basically accused us of stealing. After the nice worker made my Dole Whip left to return to her area I decided to take some pics of said Dole Whip with the intention of writing a nice review about her but this male worker came up and asked if we made it ourselves to which we replied "no that we paid the other worker". No apology by the male worker. You can make your own conclusions here. If you want the designer brand bags, clothes, cosmetics, etc. The Duty Free Gallleria is the place to go. I remember coming here a long time ago, it was ALL catered to tourists from Japan where almost every employee is able to speak Japanese. Then years later, it started to cater towards tourists from Korea. Now, it's mostly catered to tourists from China with many Mandarin speakers. The whole galleria is clean and organized. There 3 levels of shopping. The first level is the outlet quality designer products near the entrance. Further in is the Hawaiian cookies, coffees, and other Made in Hawaii food items. Second level is the cosmetics, fragrances, and toiletries including a few designer brand accessories stores, such as Coach, Kate Spade, etc. Third floor is the super high end designer brands, such as Burberry, Van Cleef & Arpels, etc. The only confusing part is the escalators as they're in random places and they're not two-ways. It's definitely a ploy to get shoppers walking through again. Just stick to the elevators! The prices here are usually slightly cheaper than at Macy's and regular retail stores, and add in the fact you don't need to pay the 4.712% sales tax AND there's a 5% Kama'aina discount. There's also more discounts if you purchase multiple items from one store. To be honest, I've never bought anything here for myself because I don't find it necessary to purchase brand name, higher priced items. I'm a Ross and Longs shopper. My wife enjoys this place though... I'm lighter every time I leave. Overall, it's a nice place to come to with so many brand name stores, Asian employees, and Asian tourists roaming around, and "Aloha" being said to you constantly. If you want to buy some high end brands without tax it's your get-to-go shop. Just head up on the 3rd floor. ~ But not for me. The only reason why I wanted to go in herr is for the dole whip which is my favorite. And tbh to help cool-off myself from the heat in Waikiki. Another downfall on this store is that the way they build this building. Everytime I'm here, I'm so confused on where the heck I am going. It's a maze for me. And I'm having a hard time sometimes finding where to exit and the escalator down. Another one is that, the shop's clerk attitude. Where some of them they're rude after they'll learn that you won't buy their product. Homophobic. I was in the store with my husband on 16 November 2023 and we were looking at sunglasses. The older Japanese sales lady was very aggressive. She began questioning us on what our relationship was. After she asked twice I responded that we are married and he is my husband. She gasped and then spoke to her coworker in Japanese and repeated "husband" in English and they both laughed. The aggressive one then asked us both which one was "the wife." At that point we put the two pairs of $375 sunglasses down and I told her she was f...ing ignorant and working in retail in Honolulu she should be more tolerant. I expect this treatment in Alabama, but not Hawaii. She certainly has the right not to be an ally, but she has no right to behave the way she did. I noticed depends on the brand, the shop clerks' attitude were different. But from 90% of them, I had good experience. Don't trust the price tag in good way. Just ask how much it would be. DFS or T-Galleria as it's now know is a shoppers paradise. If you don't already know DFS does not charge tax on its items! Personally I only come here to buy beauty and skin care items. Like I said, no tax! DFS also carries a lot of speciality beauty brands that you can't find at Sephora, Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus. It saves me the trouble of ordering items online and I can get my products immediately, wooo! Sales associate are so-so. Not all of the workers are fluent in Japanese, but they tend to cater to Japanese tourists. As a result, Japanese shoppers clearly get better services here. read more

This is your typical duty free store. They have tones of stores on the 1st and 2nd floor. But the 3rd floor has all your duty free/ tax free items. They mostly have bags and makeup on the third floor for purchase. It was confusing walking around to find an exit. You have to walk around the whole store to exit to the next floor. I felt like I was walking in circle to exit because you go up on one side and then down to the next level on the other side. On the mainland I'm so use to having the escalator up and down all together. And they also has elevators. But for some reason I couldn't find any elevators at all. read more

This is a very nice shopping center featuring many high end designer brands. Of course we had to stop here, as it's wife's favorite spot. This is a 3 level shopping center with everything from designer bags, clothing and even food items. It's fun to browse, even if you're not planning to shop. Many of the customers are Japanese tourists. I noticed they're all cheerful and they're toting shopping bags from the various stores they have bought at. Being not well-versed in Hawaiian Host product pricing, just scooped up their Caramacs at $6/box. 5 min after paying we walked by an ABC Store just next door and saw they had the same Caramacs for $3/box. That's ridiculous!...Not only did I not save anything...I actually ended up paying a 100% mark-up. Duty-Free...you will rob me never again. WoW. I just went to an event here yesterday and I was quite impressed. We were with the event so parking in the Galleria was free, but I bet it usually costs and arm and a leg just for the parking. I'm not sure though.. Anyways, the second floor is the beauty floor and they have LOADS of beauty products. That's 10,000 products from over 60 brands. You don't pay tax when you shop here too! Sweet. Oh, and I don't even know if I want to write this here... but they have free champagne, make up applications, and DJ music every Saturday from 8pm to 10 pm. So basically I can go here... get free drinks and they'll make me picture pretty for my Saturday night out! Oh, and they even have a free skin analysis at the Beauty Concierge. Of course they are there to tell you what expensive product you should buy to help your skin, but it's always nice to know how healthy your skin is too. read more

I've never purchased anything here and I don't think I ever will. I'm much too poor. Usually I stop by because there are some amazing displays at this location and it's nice to wander in and take it all in, especially during the holidays. There is also a good array of seating in case you are tired and the WiFi is strong and consistent, and free. Today I stopped by for a different reason and have a little of customer service experience to relate. I am sometimes used to stopping by places like this to refill my water bottle and go to the bathroom on my way home. To that score I will say this location has amazing water from their water fountain, very clean tasting and crisp and not too cold. They also have great bathrooms however it's on the second floor I believe so this is not the most accessible place to go if you are just coming from the beach or whatever. This is a slightly open space mall so you will want to be careful around the highly priced goods. The others are right in that the space is a little complex to navigate but there is adequate signage using pictographs instead of words for the non-English speaking crowd that does seem to make up the majority customer here. There are not many locals to be seen, either in the clientele or the employees, 95% of which do appear to be Asian foreign-language speaking women. The employees range from rather fashionable and uptight-seeming young women to rather mature and slightly more easygoing-seeming old women, and any mix of qualities in between (young and easygoing, old and uptight, etc). I say "seeming" because I am going by impression. However today I stopped in to check out the makeup section on the second floor and I can speak from some experience that there is a good level of service here. The lady who pointed me to the bathroom was nice and also the lady who helped me try some lipstick at the Estée Lauder makeup counter was also kind. I did not end up buying the lipstick and she was not pushy about it. She was more of an easygoing old lady. Looking at the different employees I can see how those who come here might have pretty different kinds of experiences depending on who they get. Just looking at the makeup counters I can say there is a few repeats from Macy's (Estée Lauder, MAC, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Shiseido, Benefit, IT Cosmetics) and Sephora (Tom Ford, Yves Saint Laurent) but I did see that the selection is slightly expanded here. For example I was able to find an Estée Lauder lipstick from a 2014 line which I did not find at Macy's. There is both a Macy's and a Sephora along the Waikiki strip. The Waikiki Sephora is quite a bit less busy than either T-Galleria and the Sephora at Ala Moana if you're interested. What I mean to get at though is T-Galleria has makeup counters that are pretty hard to find elsewhere. For example they have Anna Sui which I have found nowhere else (unless I'm mistaken), and then Guerlain. You might be able to find similar tier of makeup brands at the department stores at Ala Moana, your Nordstrom, Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus, but not along Waikiki. I have not compared prices but the Ala Moana stores does not offer Kamaaina discount nor tax free, although each store probably has their own rewards programs, like Bloomingdales. In case the mention of the discounts offered here has caught your eye I will say that there are some surprisingly mid-range retail stores here. Michael Kors for one. There is also an extensive perfume selection, it seems like. I will also say that there are quite unique watch and jewelry stores here too, on the third floor. For example, Hamilton watches. I have not seen a stand alone store or counter for Hamilton watches yet on this island. If you have a particular desire to buy a watch then T-Galleria has pretty much every major luxury brand you can think of, and all in one section. Of course the same stores can be found along Waikiki or at Ala Moana or at International Marketplace but much more spread out. If you want an overview then this is a great place to check out. Other mentions: They have a live DJ near the front entrance. He keeps the place poppin'. Giving 4-4.5 stars because this isn't the place I really feel comfortable at but it does offer some pretty unique shopping experiences and is relatively open access and is probably a good place to shop for others with more to spend. The discounts do seem compelling reasons to stop by here but I don't see myself making use of it to give a review. read more

Ha! So, this place definitely caters to the Japanese visitors which is cool because I still enjoyed the stroll through the center. Definitely had different shops that had local products like soaps, Kona and Ka'u coffee. Also had the Godiva store here that sold ice cream, single truffles, hot chocolate and shakes. So, I read the reviews where it says you can't go up to the 3rd floor without having the international passport or airline tickets. There was a sign before you go up the escalator with a security guard posted so, people like me won't try it. They serious too! That 3rd floor is where all the good stuff is and it's duty free (no tax) but the good thing is those same stores are on the strip, so no worries. read more

If you're looking for brand name items, this is the place to come. If you need to buy gifts, there's a store that sells chocolate and cookies on the first floor. The store is huge with many samples to try. I didn't buy anything here since the prices were steep and I could find the same stuff where I live. If you need a place to get out of the heat, I would suggest coming here. This place has air conditioning. This is a mall with numerous high end designer "sub" stores. Even though the majority of the clientele are from Asia/Japan, customer service was very, very high from a mainlander point of view. I would even venture to say that the service was better than some of the standalone designer boutiques we've visited before back home. One of the nice perks of this place (and other stores on Kalakaua/Waikiki) is that they're open until 11pm. This allows us tourists to hang out at the beach and shop when we get back lol! So, despite my family having spent the entire day in the North Shore/Sunset Beach area, my wife and mother were still energized to do some "window" shopping upon our return back to Waikiki. Needless to say, the browsing turned to full out purchases lol! My mother and wife each ended up finding and picking up bags from Burberry. Which leads to another perk here; it's duty free, so no added sales tax!! Their sales associate, which I believe was Elvia(?), was extremely friendly and easy going. She was preoccupied assisting other customers when we arrived, but she cheerfully told my mother and wife to "try" whatever they fancied, lol :). After narrowing down exactly what they each wanted, Elvia (I really wish I remembered her name), carefully wrapped up their new "toys"and had them on their merry ways. Again, their sales associate deserves a big shout out, not only because she was cheerful and no pressure, but because she was all that AND helpful up to closing time!! Now that I call service :) I'm quite impressed with the experience here that I would like to "window" shop on the upper floors for a Breitling or VC...now if I could convince my family to stroll around tonight hahahaha. read more

Makeup department doesn't service locals? Happened to be in Waikiki and heard there's Sulwhasoo sold here, so I thought I'd grab a few things that I'm running low on... I waited, standing in front of the things I wanted... At first I thought there was a designated worker for Sulwhasoo who went to the bathroom or something, so Ok, np. But as soon as some Chinese tourists stand next to me, an employee comes over from across the walkway to ask if they need help. The hell? So the sales associates from other sections can ring this stuff up for me? Should I go take my product to someone and beg them to ring me up?... Nah, I'll just go to Nordstrom later. On our recent trip to Hawaii we had the most incredible service across the board from several associates as T Galleria. It was a very busy shopping day and each associate was pleasant, helpful, took time to answer our questions and went above and beyond to help our family. We met Roberto Longo who was exceptionally hardworking and helpful. When I went to compliment the manager about Roberto it was brought to my attention that Roberto was in fact the manager. The associates I spoke with told us that he is a wonderful manager and great to work for. I believe leadership like this sets the tone for staff and trickles down. When I depart from LAX (and terminal 7/United especially) to overseas airports, their DFS store is very tiny and selections are very limited unlike this Waikiki location. I love duty free shopping to begin with. But when my best friend told me to check out THIS DFS galleria??? I was beyond excited!! They have a lot of stuff on the (1st floor-sweets/coffee, ralph Lauren,burberry,Michael kors, Marc Jacobs, coach, see by Chloe etc) But mayo rite part would have to be the 2nd floor- watches, sunglasses, fragrances, Tory burch, more coach and oh. The beauty department!!!! They have almost of of the make up and skin care brands I love!!! (Chanel, Dior, benefit, MAC, Anna Sui, kiehls, jo Malone, Clinique, Bobbi brown, bare essentials, givenchy, guerlain, aveeda, la mer, Lancôme, Estée Lauder..just to name a few..) some are more expensive than other duty free stores so you really have to do your research beforehand. And unfortunately, most f the stuff from Mac are sold out (even the ones that are in regular circulation) Did I mention that they are open til 11 pm?? Score!! Do come by here when you are in Waikiki. This is one of the biggest DFS in the world and I absolutely love it!! The second floor (cosmetic) is my Mecca....I have no business on the third floor (brand-name watches, purses, jewelries etc). They do have a validated parking and when I called the customer service number, the lady told me it is 60 minutes but I don't know if she was telling me the truth....Because 60 minutes is not enough for shopping at this place!! For me, it was difficult finding the entrance to where the trolleys were. I circled and observed where the trolleys were going but couldn't find the pedestrian entrance. I eventually saw people and followed them entering the lobby area. Reminds me of a mini airport. The Waikiki Trolley workers were nice though I didn't know how to explain where I wanted to go first. The bigger trolley/buses meet outside, some of the regular trolleys meet inside. Like a subway. There aren't many seats. Just a long bench (one for the different lines). There should be better signage to show where things are. read more

Other than that, I can't really afford a lot of the high end brands here...I'm a poor college student:( However, thy have a few stores that you won't find along kalakaua or in Ala Moana. I like checking out the Marc Jacobs store and some of the make up stores. I'm not really sure how this duty free deal works. But if you want to buy something duty free from here, you'll pay for it, pick it up at the airport and have to take it out of the country. Therefore, not a lot of locals shop here. I won't unless I'm going on a trip. Overall, the layout is confusing. It felt like those airports that purposely make you walk through a maze of stores before exiting (I'm thinking of the Denpasar airport...). I miss the aquarium! This place is super-popular with Japanese tourists; the trolley lets off here, and it is suddenly empty, for a few moments, that is, until others board. There is a floor dedicated to "those with passports"- can't exactly say for "the Japanese tourists only." There is a beautiful Coach storefront with signature C's etched on the mirror wall. There are a few boutiques that seem to meld together as there are not many separating walls. I noticed a fine chocolate section (free samples were given out) in their tiny boxes with ribbon. There is an envoy of eager to please, but friendly sales staff. No sales here, not really a place for me to shop. But pretty to look at- more so for window shopping. read more

I love the way that everything is displayed, but it's veered more towards tourists from overseas because if you live in the states than you already venture in these stores in your area. My favorite floor is the makeup floor. It's so brightly lit and I felt like I literally stepped into tokyo with all of it's shining display and samples. It's absolutely gorgeous. All the brand name make up is all at your disposal and all in one spot. It's overwhelming if you don't know what you're looking for, but it's definitely every girls' dream stop. Prices are expensive, but that's no surprise with all the high end designers and brands. And I do not feel underdressed when shopping here, everybody is wearing shorts and flip flops and what not!! No snotty salespersons to stare you down!! All jokes aside, I really like this store. Cosmetics never go on sale, so saving on taxes is still saving. And they are very good at offering make over and let you try everything, no sales pressure here. Same with the sunglasses department, I swear I tried almost all the sunglasses there. I wish I can buy a new handbag, but United only allows one suitcase, and I sure do not want to crush a new handbag into a suitcase!! So sadly, I will have to wait and buy at home, sales taxes included. Spent on coffees and chocolates and cookies to bring home as gifts. This place has changed a lot since I last went. I actually used to work here 20 years ago, but it has really been spruced up. Everything looks so brand new and shiny. The décor and façade has made the place look very chic but as far as selection of merchandise is concerned, I think the amount of choices has gone down. Everything is luxury, high end, but it seems they have discontinued a lot of other name brand merchandise, like Rolex, etc. I was hoping they would have more choices in their cosmetics section like Revive, or Natura Bisse. read more

Very nice shopping center with everything but high end stores.. Burberry, Prada, Gucci, LV, TagHuer, Omega, etc.. Plus lots of high end make up and skin care as well. 3 levels to walk through..round and round and round.. Even though you might come out buying nothing.. It is just a nice air conditioned space to walk around. Plus it is DUTY FREE! read more
