Why this is the very first time I've seen|heard of TA Travel Center is beyond me but I sure am glad to have stumbled across this location today. While my family and I were on our way home, we made a quick detour to fuel up the car, grab some snacks, and to use the restrooms. I am pretty confident in saying you will be able to find whatever you are in need of, here. Bonus points for having delicious eats all under one roof- Burger King, Popeyes, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and Subway. TA Travel Center is grand in size, the establishment is extremely roomy, things were organized, and while most shelves and aisles were stocked, the chips department was bare as a bone. Snacks are plentiful whether you are in need of just deliciously processed foods or healthier options. The restrooms are tidy and have restrooms on both ends of the building- that leaves for less wait times and quicker visits going in and out. OVERVIEW: After or before making the Grapevine mountain run, this is a good place to take a pit stop. But it's far from ideal, and could be A LOT BETTER. CONS: Hands down, Love's & Flying J Gas / Truck stops are far superior to TA Travel Centers any day of the week. TA simply feels old and outdated. The bathrooms are old, the coffee machines are old, and the corporate owners are not doing anything to upgrade the facilities. There have been times when the Men's / Women's bathrooms have been closed for cleaning maintenance DURING PEAK BUSINESS HOURS. Even though there are additional bathrooms, (albeit much smaller) on the premises, if a charter bus unloads a large group of passengers at this location during a peak hour maintenance break, YOU HAVE A DISASTER. C'mon management, it's a 24 HOUR FACILITY !!! Do the cleaning maintenance during slow traffic periods !!! There are many other gas stations at the East & West Laval Road Exits. (With TA Travel being on the East side.). But for some inexplicable reason, there seems to be a lot of flies at this location. So if you open your car or truck door for an extended period of time, you're sure to get flies in your cabin. I have never experienced this problem at other locations at Laval Road. There must be some sanitation issues there that are causing the flies to congregate there in force. PROS: HUGE parking lot. So if you want to walk your dog, or simply relax in your car for awhile, you're sure to find a spot which is quiet and no one will bother you. There is security on the property. (Although the same security company covers other establishments on Laval Road.) There are several food options ri. For years and years, I would stop by this place at least 4 times a year on my way back/forth from OC to SF. Have used the bathroom, got gas, always bought drinks and snacks. However, my family has decided, "Eh, they don't care about our business enough to provide us with toilet seat covers anymore; we'll just stop and give our money to somewhere else where they didn't decide to cheap out on providing this." I always stop for gasoline and using the restroom during travel. But today I walked in to use the women's restroom I didn't see any sign posted when I got in that it was being cleaned up. Stopped here for gas and a pit stop. Pumps won't let you use a Shell gift card to pay so you have to go inside. Gas prices are less than expected for a busy road stop - $0.2.0 less per gallon than my Shell at home. Pumps are congested and the lanes are narrow. We've been driving down to SoCal the last several years on I-5. Our destination is the Palm Springs area so we need to fill gas and make a comfort stop here in Arvin before we make our way up the Grapevine. TA offers both. It's a truck stop. Plenty of pumps at the Shell gas station. And the same with women restrooms inside the Wheeler Ridge East Travel Center. Go inside the convenience store to find the restrooms. Two different sections. One adjacent to the men's and another across the hall to the right. And fast food inside to select from: Burger King, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Popeye's, & Subway. There are tables indoors and outdoors. The Tejon shopping outlets are across the road too. Depending on when we make our comfort stop, we'll grab a bite to eat and then drive over to do a little shopping before we continue on. Nice BiG TA off the 5 freeway as you're coming down the Cajon Pass. This is a very large truck stop with everything you could ever need. Every time I've been here, I've never seen this place full. Inside you have a nice area to relax and watch tv after a long day of driving. They have the normal truck stop snacks, drinks, gifts and toys. They also have an assortment of truck accessories. Inside you'll find a Taco Bell, Subway, Popeyes and Burger King. It also provides a nice well lit area with ample seating if you're trying to get out of the big rig for awhile. The staff was friendly and everything was well maintained. I showered in stall #2 and to my surprise I didn't have to wait for a shower to come available. In the shower area, they provided you with towels, soap and a hairdryer. The water pressure was sufficient although it didn't get as hot as I would of liked. They even had a wall fan in case the shower area became to stuffy. Overall this is an ABOVE average truck stop. I would even be inclined to say probably one of the best in California. SITREP ...because after this spot, you hit the Grapevine and begin that last 100 mile trek to Los Angeles, Southern California and all points beyond! THE SETUP "Travel Centers" as a rule are a pretty nifty industry standard - they really put together a bunch of ancillary businesses & eateries quite nicely, along with the gas station component of the center. * In this center were a Burger King, a Taco Bell, a Pizza Hut, a Subway, and Popeyes. I actually got a Fish Sandwich with Cheese from the Burger King - $6 just for the sandwich. A big too pricy for my taste for a sandwich that would cost $4 back in Sacramento. * Also in this center is a literal "store" - think of a mini-WalMart with all sorts of random items, including camping gear, rifles, tents and the like - not your usual gas station stop. But since truckers are a big demographic for stores like these, they also sell CB Radios! FACILITIES Great restrooms. And showers! This is a full service outfit here. GAS It's expensive. Or perhaps I should say, it's the "market" rate with Southern California which is one way you know you are now in Southern California when here. Have you ever woken up and realized you slept with a whole bunch of strangers and didn't even know it? No drama girl, I ain't talking about no rufie. Watch yo' cup. Considering the amount of people, surprisingly I wasn't in the least bit sore *wink* Some LARGE and in CHARGE, some small and tall, some roBUST in the Bust, all walks of life slumped over in huddled masses. All jokes aside, considering the situation, this place was a heaven-sent. We were driving home from SF when we found out that the freeways were closed because of the snow and wind. I mean not just the 5 freeway, but all the connecting freeways were blocked. There was no way out and we were given two options: To drive back and hit the 166 til the 101 and drive along the coast which is a 6 or 7 hour detour depending on traffic, or we could spend the night and wait it out. We, like a lot of folks, didn't want to drive in the dangerous conditions so we decided to stay the night. But all the hotels in the area were full! WTF do we do now? Camp out inside a gas station that's what! I have to say, that this gas station pretty much has everything you could want in case of an emergency or in case the whole world becomes infected with a disease that turns them all into monsters and you hide here away from them. They had TVs, showers for truckers, large impeccably clean bathrooms, a mini arcade to entertain yourself, clothes to buy in case you need clean ones, outlets to charge your phones (thank jesus) dry food, drinks, and whole bunch of fast food like BK, Pizza Hut, Subway, Popeye's, and Taco Bell. And to top it off, all the workers were so sweet and helpful! They understood the stress people must have felt because of the freezing snow weather, the fact they're stuck in the middle of nowhere, and people are confused as to whats going on with the freeways. They were all on top of it helping people find out where to go, handing out maps, calling Cal Trans to find out the available freeways, all the while being cordial and warm. I'm grateful we stopped here for the night and glad they made a horrible situation just a little less horrible. There are plenty of well lit (bright led lights) parking spaces. If you need to take a snooze, there are parking spaces on the side of the building which are a bit dimmer. The bathroom has many stalls, however, there are way too many users. Bathroom has poor air circulation/ventilation. Well, I like TA Travel Center. However, I would avoid if possible. Minus 1 star.
